For fonder farewells please use the car park."The rule applies only to the drop-off zone. Parking is free for the first 15 minutes and $1.80 for half an hour.Dunedin airport CEO Dan de Bono <a target="_blank" href="https://www.rnz.co.nz/national/programmes/checkpoint/audio/2018958759/dunedin-airport-introduces-time-limits-for-drop-off-zones">told Radio New Zealand</a> that his team was having "a bit of fun" with the restriction, which he said was more about "enabling others to also have hugs."De Bono added that some travelers had previously used the zone to engage in last-minute amorous acts. "Our staff have seen some interesting things over the years," he said.Critics of the rule on social media say it is inhumane and unnecessary. From Amazon to Dell, Corporate America's in-office crackdown is in full swing 

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Boeing executives regularly use the company's eight private planes for business and personal travel.</li><li>The fleet's 1,800 flights last year amounted to about $14 million in fuel and 22,500 tons of CO2.</li></ul>Boeing's top executives regularly crisscross the globe on the manufacturer's fleet of private planes, hopping between company offices and assembly lines, visiting international airshows and conferences, and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/boeing-executives-private-jets-filing-2024-4">sometimes jet-setting for personal use</a>.Boeing's corporate planes collectively flew about 4,500 hours across some 1,800 flights last year, according to data from the aviation-tracking website <a target="_blank" href="https://jetspy.com/">JetSpy</a>. Especially one like Boeing, which is in the plane business after all.For instance, JetSpy data shows aerospace company Lockheed Martin collectively flew its five private jets for about 2,700 hours in 2023. And the five-strong corporate fleets operated by PepsiCo and Costco each flew about 1,600 hours last year.Access to these swanky corporate fleets may be fast and convenient for high-worth VIPs. Still, the carbon impact of private flying has made headlines as activists rally against the jet-setting habits of the superrich, especially celebrities like <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/taylor-swift-jet-travis-kelce-carbon-emissions-2023-10">Taylor Swift and Elon Musk.</a>Boeing did not respond to a request for comment from Business Insider.<h2>Boeing's private jet use isn't helping its already tainted image</h2>Boeing is under intense scrutiny at the moment over its quality control after an <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/alaska-boeing-737-max-9-door-blowout-company-response-earnings-2024-1">Alaska Airlines 737 Max 9 door plug blowout</a> in January. The incident followed two deadly crashes in 2018 and 2019 of another Max variant, the Max 8, which killed 346 people.More recently, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/boeing-whistleblower-777-787-plane-safety-production-2024-4">whistleblower allegations from a veteran Boeing engineer</a> indicate safety concerns on at least 1,400 of the company's 777 and 787 widebody planes.Boeing's rough run got even messier this month after it was revealed the planemaker set aside more than half a million dollars for executive personal use of its corporate aircraft.According to an amended SEC <a target="_blank" href="https://www.sec.gov/ix?doc=/Archives/edgar/data/0000012927/000119312524088568/d550077ddef14a.htm">filing</a>, the American planemaker did not initially report the $545,520 it spent on personal jet travel in 2021 and 2022 by four top executives — including the $142,315 in personal trips taken by <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/boeing-ceo-steps-down-read-dave-calhoun-staff-memo-2024-3">Calhoun</a>.Boeing wrote in the filing that its CEO "is required to use company aircraft for all business and personal travel for security reasons."Still, using the plane for a non-work-related vacation is considered a taxable benefit, and the IRS is cracking down on how companies file their jet use, according to the Journal.

Anyone can nominate a bathroom, although the nomination period ended in June, <a href="https://www.bestrestroom.com/rules/">according to contest rules</a>.The all-gender bathroom in Terminal B of the Newark Liberty International Airport was designed "to create a calming environment" and alleviate "inadequate capacity at the existing restrooms," the contest website states. "Local imagery, integrated into the architectural treatment of glass and tile, establishes a sense of place to remind the users where they might have visited or what they might want to experience during a return trip," a <a href="https://www.bestrestroom.com/vote/">photo caption</a> of the bathroom reads. <ul><li><keyword id="2573" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Air-India">Air India</keyword> has caved to China’s attempts to strong-arm countries and companies into recognising <keyword id="46274" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Taiwan">Taiwan</keyword> as a part of ‘One China’. </li><li>On 25 April, China's Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) sent a letter to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/The-White-House-called-a-letter-Chinas-aviation-authority-sent-to-36-foreign-airlines-Orwellian-nonsense/articleshow/64074608.cms">36 foreign airlines</a> pressuring them to stop referring to Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan as independent countries.</li><li>China’s economic clout has led to many international airlines including Air France, Air Canada, Lufthansa, British Airways, Air Canada, Finnair, Malaysian Airlines and now Air India to comply to the diktat. </li></ul> So it seems that India’s national carrier, Air India, has caved to China’s attempts to strong-arm countries and companies into recognising Taiwan as a part of ‘One China’. The airline has changed its reference to Taiwan on its website to Chinese <keyword id="6384167" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="taipei">Taipei</keyword>; it now refers to Taiwan airport as “Taipei, Taoyuan International Airport, TPE, Chinese Taipei.” According to an Air India <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/air-india-site-renames-taiwan-as-chinese-taipei/articleshow/64866267.cms">spokesperson</a>, the request to ‘update’ the name was done in adherence to an ‘advice’ from the Ministry of External Affairs.

 Now, while Air India does not service Taiwan directly, it does have a code-sharing agreement with Air China, which means that Air India can sell seats in Air China under its own airline designator. Basically, this agreement allows two distinct carriers to share the same flight. One such letter to United Airlines was obtained by <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/josh-rogin/wp/2018/05/05/white-house-calls-chinas-threats-to-airlines-orwellian-nonsense/?noredirect=on&amp;utm_term=.c5ae5b82bf77">Washington Post</a> according to which, if these demands were not met, China threatened to punish the carriers by imposing, “Civil Aviation Industry Credit Management Trial Measures” - which is some sort of credit score being developed to rank aviation companies and “make a record of your company’s serious dishonesty and take disciplinary actions against your company”. While Taiwan maintains its stance as an independent country in East Asia, China insists that the rogue island is a part of the country. This tussle has placed numerous international companies in a sticky situation. However, China’s undeniable economic clout has led to many international airlines including Air France, Air Canada, Lufthansa, British Airways, Air Canada, Finnair, Malaysian Airlines and now Air India to comply to the diktat. In fact, this clout extends beyond only airlines. China has bullied many big multinationals including <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-mercedes-benz-china-gaffe/mercedes-benz-apologizes-to-chinese-for-quoting-dalai-lama-idUSKBN1FQ1FJ">Mercedes-Benz</a>, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/Economic-blackmail-Zara-Qantas-Marriott-and-Delta-Air-Lines-reverse-position-on-Taiwan-for-fear-of-angering-China/articleshow/62535710.cms">Zara</a>, <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/business/wp/2018/01/18/china-demanded-marriott-change-its-website-the-company-complied/?utm_term=.c586694ae38f">Marriott</a>, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/Gap-is-the-latest-company-to-apologize-to-China-but-its-still-selling-its-controversial-T-shirt-in-the-US/articleshow/64168789.cms">GAP</a> and Japanese retailer <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-china-muji/china-fines-muji-for-packaging-that-lists-taiwan-as-a-country-idUSKCN1IP0EQ">Muji</a> into changing its references to Taiwan, <keyword id="6364076" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="tibet">Tibet</keyword>, Hong Kong and Macau. And while the White House has rubbished these threats and called it “Orwellian nonsense”, India is perhaps not as surefooted and has not <a href="https://indianexpress.com/article/india/prodded-by-beijing-air-india-joins-others-taiwan-is-now-chinese-taipei-5246269/">commented</a> on the matter, yet.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Julian Sarafian is a 29-year-old former White House intern from Sacramento, California.</li><li>He said the work was intense, and unpaid — but he got to meet Barack Obama and Joe Biden.</li></ul>This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Julian Sarafian, a 29-year-old former White House intern from Sacramento, California. The following has been edited for length and clarity.When I was 20 years old, I started my internship at the White House during the middle of President Barack Obama's second term. I was a second-year student at UC Berkeley and was in a program called "The UC Washington Program," which allows students to spend a semester in Washington, DC, and take classes while completing an internship somewhere in the capital. It was a four-month internship that started in January 2014. I was a huge fan of Obama's — I thought it would be an honor to work under his administration and to help them get things done. The internship was a great blend of what I wanted to do: I'm a big proponent of progressive change. Also, I was assigned to the Council of Economic Advisors which fit perfectly with my academic background because I loved economics and it was my major. <h2>The application process was simple </h2>I submitted my résumé and a brief cover letter explaining why I wanted to work there. Then I had a 30-minute interview with one of the staff economists who asked a couple of questions about policy, my interest in working under Obama, and my background in economics.After I got the offer, I had to go through national security clearance and had my background thoroughly vetted by the FBI and various other federal agencies. It was a bit intimidating, but also exciting. I had to do a drug test and jump through all of the other bureaucratic groups to get approved on the security side. The process took three and a half months.<h2>I landed an unpaid internship under the Council of Economic Advisers</h2>During the four-month internship I worked directly with Chairman Jason Furman of the Council of Economic Advisers. The council contributes to the <a href="https://www.govinfo.gov/content/pkg/ERP-2014/pdf/ERP-2014.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">president's economic report</a>, a big book with a high-level overview of the president's economic policies and their impact on the US economy.I was responsible for fact-checking every claim made within the extensive 300-plus-page booklet. It then would undergo multiple rounds of fact-checking to ensure quality and accuracy. I prepared summaries, transcribed speeches, and conducted research and data analysis for the chairman.<div type="image" title="Julian Sarafian on his first day of work taking a selfie outside of the White House." height="721" width="960" msid="103971037" hostid="261" sizebytes="35732"></div>I also went around DC with the chairman and transcribed his speeches. It wasn't the most glorious or fun assignment: I'd literally have to listen to a recording and manually type it up word-for-word. It took me about three minutes to transcribe each minute of speech if I was fast. An hour-long speech, for example, would take me three hours to transcribe.On average, I worked 60 hours a week, and the internship was unpaid — my parents were supporting me financially at the time.<h2>The work and pressure were intense</h2>I lived in Dupont Circle, a neighborhood where all UC Washington students lived and studied. It's a 10 to 15 minute walk to the White House grounds, and I even walked there on cold and snowy days.I wasn't ever told to stay late and get in early, but I felt it was kind of expected: I'd wake up around 6:30 a.m. and be on the White House premises by 7:30 a.m., sometimes 8:30 a.m.As an employee, I used a specific entrance on the north side of the White House to check in. It's the side where visitors often gather to take photos of the White House, so it was neat walking in like a VIP. The entrance for visitors is on the other side of the building near the South Lawn, and those lines tend to be much longer.<div type="image" title="Julian Sarafian with his dad on the street right outside the White House grounds." height="1536" width="2048" msid="103971038" hostid="261" sizebytes="190116"></div>To enter, I'd flash my work badge to the first guard at the gate. There is a security guard post with security personnel eyeing each person who comes in, and a checkpoint with a metal detector and bag scanner, similar to an airport. The process from waiting in line to making it through security was usually quick and didn't take longer than five minutes.I was generally left to manage my own workload and schedule, with occasional meetings throughout the day with staff economists or my managers. While there were over 100 interns at the White House at any given time, there were only eight of us in the Council of Economic Advisers. We usually took our lunch breaks together around noon for 30 to 45 minutes.I typically worked until 5 p.m. on slower days and 8 p.m. during busy times. I often used my evenings to brush up on policy or dive deeper into research projects we were assigned. Weekend work was rare for me, but not uncommon for the full-time economists on the Council.<h2>There were some memorable moments at the White House </h2>I was also fortunate enough to get a tour of the Oval Office. I got to bring my parents and we toured the actual West Wing. There were some memorable moments at the White House too: One Friday, I was leaving work at 6 p.m. I exited the building and walked through a corridor when out of nowhere, a hefty 6'5" Secret Service agent was in front of me. He put his hand to my face and said "Stop." I had no clue what was going on. Three seconds later, Barack Obama walked by, flanked by staffers, press, and other Secret Service agents. I wanted to say, "I love you!" but I was frozen. After he passed, the agent who told me to stop nodded at me and let me through. I kept looking back hoping to catch another glimpse of the president. Obama just walked past. I also met now-President Joe Biden when he was walking around the building one day. He was with his staffers and two Secret Service agents. I felt more excited than nervous when I saw him and introduced myself. He was taller than I imagined (he's 6'0") and very friendly. Interns saw him around the halls fairly often because his office was in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, which was where many of the interns worked.On another occasion, I met Sunny and Bo, the Obamas' Portuguese water dogs, and even got to pet them. They were accompanied by the White House groundskeeper and were often spotted around the grounds.<h2>Working at the White House was like being in an aquarium</h2>The internship benefits were mainly résumé enhancement and gaining insights into policymaking firsthand, and I can pretty confidently say that my peers and I all had a great experience.It was amazing to be one of the people on the ground completing the research and justification of important policies. We conducted early research on policies like banning oil drilling in specific fields in the US, long before they became public. I can't take a fish with me or join them on the other side.<h2>Public service is about believing in the higher mission of what you're doing rather than the short-term returns </h2>Unlike the private sector, the White House internships don't come with perks like free lunch, game rooms, and a social budget. But we had the pride of walking onto the White House campus. My love for the mission served as motivation during the tough, grueling moments as an unpaid intern. Serving under Obama's administration taught me that philosophy well: it's the passion for the impact on others that must motivate you if you're to survive in public service long term.<div type="image" title="Julian Sarafian" height="2205" width="2940" msid="103967665" hostid="261"></div>After my internship, I studied law at Harvard Law School and worked as a corporate attorney. But I saw the need for mental health advocacy — given how the pandemic had roughened folks up — and left big law two years ago to focus on my own mental health. But experts say the Chinese government is likely to step in to manage the situation, in the shadows or otherwise."Evergrande is too big for the Chinese government to ignore," Warut Promboon, head of credit research at research firm Bondcritic, wrote in a note published last month on the Smartkarma research platform.To get a sense of how the rest of Evergrande's debt drama could play out, we took a look at how the Chinese Community Party has managed the collapse of three too-big-to fail private companies in the last five years.<h2>Anbang got absorbed into a new entity set up by the government — which is still trying to sell it off</h2>Company: AnbangSector: Car insurance turned conglomerateAt its peak: Anbang started as a regional car insurer in 2004 but — thanks to an aggressive debt-fueled shopping spree — grew so much in a decade that it managed to snap up the storied <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/anbang-waldorf-idUSB9N0TO01420150202">Waldorf Astoria hotel in New York</a> for about $2 billion in 2014.It was well-connected, too. Founder Wu Xiaohui was married to a granddaughter of late Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping, who is credited with reforming China's economy. By 2018, Anbang claimed to have about two trillion Chinese yuan ($313 billion) in assets, <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-china-anbang-regulation-idUSKCN1G7076">Reuters reported.</a>The collapse: Anbang's downfall was swift and sudden. <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/anbang-group-chairman/even-before-anbang-chairman-detained-some-banks-halted-its-products-idUSL1N1JC1T8https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-china-40269462">Wu was taken away</a> by the police from his office in 2017. The next year, <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/china-anbang-trial-idUKB9N1SG006">he was sentenced</a> to 18 years in jail for suspected economic crimes, including fundraising, fraud, and embezzlement.The government's intervention: By the time Wu was sentenced, <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-china-anbang-regulation-idUSKCN1G7076">Chinese regulators</a> had already taken over Anbang and started a <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-anbang-restructuring-idUSKCN1HB06V">state-led restructuring</a> of the technically insolvent insurer.As part of its restructuring, Anbang's core insurance and asset management businesses were transferred to a new state-owned company, <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-china-anbang-dajia-idUKKCN1U6055">Dajia,</a> in 2019. <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-anbang-group-divestment-property-excl-idUSKBN1K917X">Some other assets were sold</a> off to raise cash.<a href="http://www.xinhuanet.com/english/2020-02/22/c_138809153.htm">Last year,</a> the Chinese insurance regulator ended its two-year takeover. During the time it was in charge, the troubled insurer managed to pay short- and medium-term financial insurance issued on time with no defaults, said China's <a href="https://www.cbirc.gov.cn/cn/view/pages/ItemDetail.html?docId=891334&amp;itemId=915&amp;generaltype=0">insurance regulator.</a><a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/china/china-puts-controlling-stake-revamped-anbang-block-52-bln-2021-07-17/">The Chinese government</a> is now trying to sell its stakes in Dajia, which two state investors put up for auction in July. It hasn't found a buyer yet, and for what it's worth, it's holding onto the <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/features/2021-10-08/waldorf-astoria-inside-the-renovation-slated-for-condos-hotel-owned-by-china">Waldorf Astoria.</a><h2><keyword id="12597293" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="baoshang-bank" source="Orion">Baoshang Bank</keyword> underwent a government-managed restructuring and repaid most debts before it was allowed to go bankrupt</h2>Company: Baoshang BankSector: FinanceAt its peak: Baoshang was a small, obscure Chinese bank based in Inner Mongolia with conglomerate Tomorrow Group as its major shareholder. The bank had <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-china-banks-baoshang-breakingviews-idUSKCN25608S">assets</a> of 576 billion Chinese yuan ($90 billion) in 2017, when it published its last annual report.The collapse: In May 2019, the Chinese government took over the small lender suddenly, <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-china-banks-idUSKCN1T011G">citing serious credit risks.</a> It was China's first state bank seizure in more than two decades, and the move sent shockwaves across the country's banking system. <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-china-banks-idUSKBN1X90SX">Regulators</a> said Tomorrow Group had made improper and illegal use of significant bank funds.The government's intervention: While Baoshang was a far smaller company than Evergrande or Anbang, <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-china-banks-idUSKCN1T011G">the troubles at Baoshang</a> ignited global concerns about bad loans at small lenders in China, the systemic risks in hundreds of such lenders in the country, and the domino effect of a financial crisis from the world's second-largest economy.Under a government-led restructuring, parts of <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-china-banks-baoshang-idUKKBN22C1RW">Baoshang Bank's assets, liabilities, and businesses were taken over</a> by a newly formed bank — Mengshang Bank — and Hong Kong-listed Huishang Bank.State investors such as a national deposit insurance fund and the Inner Mongolia government entered the restructuring process, injecting funds into the new entity through a facility that provided liquidity.This allowed 90% of debts owed to large creditors to be repaid, <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/china-banks-baoshang-idUSL4N2F847M">Reuters reported,</a> citing the People's Bank of China. Without the injection of public funds, the average repayment rate for creditors would be less than 60%, according to the central bank.In August 2020, Baoshang was finally <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/china-banks-baoshang-idUSL4N2F847M">allowed to file for bankruptcy</a> and to liquidate its remaining assets. The new Mengshang Bank is still operating.<h2><keyword id="12597294" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="hna-group" source="Orion">HNA Group</keyword> asked for help and got taken over by the government</h2>Company: HNA GroupSector: Starting out as an airline in 1993 in the southern China region of Hainan, HNA Group grew to become an aggressive dealmaker snapping up trophy businesses around the world using ultra-loose credit available in the 2010s. At the end of June 2017, <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-hna-group-creditors/chinas-hna-targets-16-billion-in-asset-sales-in-first-half-bloomberg-idUSKBN1FK0WC">HNA had assets</a> of 1.2 trillion Chinese yuan ($187.7 billion.)At its peak: Its global acquisitions — worth more than $50 billion, according to <a href="https://www.reuters.com/business/finance/chinas-hna-restructuring-plan-approved-by-creditors-2021-10-23/">Reuters</a> — included sizable stakes in Hilton Hotels and Deutsche Bank, as well as luxury properties including skyscraper 245 Park Avenue in Manhattan. Many of its acquisitions were made at a high premium, according to <a href="https://dealogic.com/insight/hna-unwind/">Dealogic</a> in a note.At its peak, HNA employed 400,000 people around the world, according to <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2021/09/24/business/china-hna-evergrande.html">The New York Times.</a>The collapse: HNA's debt-fueled acquisitions started to come under the microscope of the Chinese government. Its unravelling came in a similar fashion to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/evergrande-pays-some-bondholders-148-million-avoids-default-again-2021-11">Evergrande's</a> — by way of <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-china-conglomerates-hna-idUSKBN1AH3A8">government measures introduced in 2017</a> that aimed to minimize private domestic companies' risk exposure.The government's intervention: HNA came under regulatory scrutiny and banks that once dealt with its investments <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2017-07-24/china-banks-that-funded-hna-s-growth-are-said-to-halt-new-loans-j5hnmp3f">halted loans</a> to the group, causing a massive liquidity crunch, in turn hitting HNA's ability to pay off its debts. It started selling assets to raise funds, including stakes in <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-hilton-wrldwide-secondary-offering-hn-idUSKBN1HG1KX">Hilton</a> and <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-hna-group-deutsche-bank-idUSKCN1LN0TM">Deutsche Bank.</a> Foreign governments, including <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-global-eagle-ent-m-a-hna-group-idUSKBN1AB0BE">the US,</a> also scrutinized deals the company was making, citing concerns like national security.<a href="https://www.scmp.com/business/companies/article/2144073/hna-will-ditch-vanity-purchases-aviation-logistics-and-tourism">HNA</a> started selling off most of its assets unrelated to its original businesses, saying in 2018 it would focus on aviation, logistics, and tourism — but the pandemic hit last year, impacting those sectors. This prompted <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-china-hna-idUKKBN20N0AJ">HNA to seek help</a> from the Hainan provincial government, which took over the company. <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-china-hna-idUSKBN20N0AJ">Officials</a> from China's civil aviation administrator and China Development Bank, the country's main policy bank, also got involved.HNA was placed in <a href="https://asia.nikkei.com/Business/Markets/China-debt-crunch/Chinese-court-puts-HNA-Group-into-bankruptcy-administration">bankruptcy administration</a> in February 2021 and <a href="https://www.reuters.com/business/finance/chinas-hna-restructuring-plan-approved-by-creditors-2021-10-23/">just last month,</a> creditors of the company voted to approve the company's restructuring plan involving 1.1 trillion Chinese yuan ($172 billion) worth of <a href="https://www.caixinglobal.com/2021-10-27/bankrupt-hna-clears-creditor-hurdle-in-170-billion-debt-restructuring-101791973.html">debt.</a>It has also been <a href="https://www.scmp.com/business/companies/article/3149400/hna-group-be-broken-four-independent-units-chinese-conglomerates">broken into four independent units</a> focusing on aviation, airport, financial, and commercial.<h2>Evergrande will likely go the way of HNA Group, says a <keyword id="6368266" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="bond" source="Orion">bond</keyword> specialist</h2>Evergrande, China's second-biggest property developer, has <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/evergrande-private-jets-50-million-debt-china-property-crisis-2021-11">$300 billion in debt</a>. The Chinese government is likely to manage a controlled implosion of the company, keeping the fallout as minimal as possible, said Warut. She also made a seating map for the pets based on a Google Survey she sent to pet owners about their dogs' personalities and needs."I was very meticulous," she told Insider, adding that the flight "ended up working wonderfully," even though everybody was too stressed out to catch any shut-eye.<h2>2. Empty-leg private jet flight</h2> A slightly more affordable option for flexible flyers is a travel hack known as <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-i-fly-private-to-ibiza-dodge-travel-chaos-2022-7">empty-leg flights,</a> which the couple used to fly with all three dogs from Paris to London for a total of $3,000, Demi said.Brokers will randomly offer these when a chartered jet needs to return back to the airport after dropping off its passengers. Since the plane has to fly the route anyway, the tickets are typically heavily discounted.However, empty-leg flights are difficult to book far in advance, Demi said, so they aren't the most reliable means of transportation."If you can be flexible, I think it's a great option," she told Insider. "We were able to get our entire plane with just the two of us and the dogs for significantly less."<h2>3. Pay-per-seat semi-private flight</h2> On the way back from Europe to the US, Demi and the dogs flew on K9 Jets, a newly launched private aviation company that specifically caters to pet parents. The action could affect 15 cities, including Chicago, New York, and Seattle — which host some of the busiest airports in the country and the world. Airport service workers, such as janitors, security guards, and baggage handlers, will call on Congress to pass the <a href="https://www.congress.gov/bill/117th-congress/senate-bill/4419/text">Good Jobs for Good Airports Act</a>. That legislation, introduced by Massachusetts Senator Ed Markey over the summer, would ensure that any airport that receives project grants must pay their airport service workers a minimum of $15 or the area's prevailing wage and stronger benefits. "Airport service workers all across this country help make our airports run. They are paid poverty wages, and it's been poverty wages for the past 20 years, and it's overwhelmingly workers of color who are often paid the lowest," Mary Kay Henry, president of Service Employees International Union (SEIU), told Insider. Benefits are "very, very important" for all workers, she said, so that they don't stop seeing doctors or lose pay for getting surgery.Lashonda "Shonda" Barber, an international trash truck driver at Charlotte Douglas International Airport, said that with her pay, she's unable to pay her mortgage."The cost of living is so high here in Charlotte we really need low pay to go up, so we can afford to live here," Barber said.Barber is also contending with short staffing, and, with the holiday rush incoming, said that things will only intensify. "It's not easy work when you've got two people doing it, when there's supposed to be 10," she said. The only way to have a strong team, she said, is with higher pay and benefits, so people would be happy to come in and work. "I hope we win this. I really do. Because enough is enough. These people are suffering," Montalvo said.

Volunteers would work six-hour shifts from June to August helping customers find their way around the airport, as well as assisting at gates and ticketing stations. On June 6, <a href="https://www.tsa.gov/coronavirus/passenger-throughput">the Transportation Security Administration</a> recorded close to 2 million people going through airport security. This was the largest number of screenings since the pandemic started. The number of passengers going through security across the US has been increasing in recent weeks, as more and more Americans get vaccinated.
