Mphasis to provide multi-cloud experiences to customers with VMware Tanzu

The new group includes <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/vmware-acquires-pivotal-carbon-black-developers-analysts-2019-8">Pivotal</a> and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/vmware-heptio-acquisition-vmworld-kubernetes-2019-8">Heptio</a>, the startup that VMware acquired in 2018 <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/vmware-heptio-google-kubernetes-2018-11">for $550 million</a>, as well as other teams at VMware building cloud applications. </p><p>The goal of MAPBU is to deliver products for application developers, and one of the key components of that is <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-is-kubernetes-google-cloud-2019-1">Kubernetes</a>, a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/google-aparna-sinha-kubernetes-interview-2019-3">Google-born</a> open source cloud project used to manage and run large-scale applications. Both Heptio and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/pivotal-layoffs-vmware-open-letter-dell-2019-11">Pivotal</a> have made Kubernetes <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/pivotal-pas-kubernetes-wall-street-rob-mee-2019-7">a key part</a> of their business.</p><p><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/developer-technologies-digital-transformation-tech-companies-2020-1">Kubernetes</a> is a key component of MAPBU because it gives developers the flexibility to run applications on multiple clouds, as well as in on-premise data centers. </p><p>"<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/kubernetes-bug-bounty-program-google-2020-1">Kubernetes</a> is what we believe a key part to bridge the applications developer to the infrastructure operator," O'Farrell who is now EVP and General Manager, told Business Insider. </p><p>MAPBU will also work closely with two of VMware's other acquisitions: software package company <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/vmware-acquisition-bitnami-cloud-software-apps-startup-2019-5">Bitnami</a> and the monitoring platform Wavefront.</p><h2><strong>'Appealing to this new customer'</strong></h2><p>O'Farrell says VMware created MAPBU because in recent years, especially 2018 and 2019, VMware's overall business strategy has placed "high priority" on supporting developers running their applications across multiple clouds. </p><p>"When we have made the various applications, they were all made very much in the spirit of appealing to this new customer," O'Farrell said.</p><p>What's more, it wanted to bring <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/pivotal-earnings-q1-2020-stock-2019-6">Pivotal</a>, Heptio, and other teams at VMware together in a more "cohesive" way. </p><p>"We decided to do that by giving a singular identity to all these different companies we brought together," O'Farrell said. "That's why you see both the creation of the business unit and also the creation of Tanzu to paint a singular identity for those teams. To a customer that's important as well. You want a customer to look at this in the same way."</p><p>O'Farrell says that while VMware has traditionally been strong when it comes to infrastructure and IT, it now wants to help companies with their cloud applications. It introduced several new products on Tuesday for Tanzu, its line of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ibm-red-hat-vmware-kubernetes-battle-2019-11">Kubernetes</a> products. The word Tanzu is the Japanese word for a traditional container used for storing and transporting objects.</p><p>"We were the company that supported the infrastructure that ran beneath the applications," O'Farrell said. "With Tanzu, we are working to turn that same strength from an enterprise management point of view."</p><h2><strong>A 'big bet on Kubernetes'</strong></h2><p>O'Farrell says acquiring Heptio was a turning point for VMware. </p><p>"That was when we immediately placed a big bet on <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/kubernetes-5th-anniversary-google-kubecon-2019-6">Kubernetes</a> and immediately became a major contributor to the Kubernetes community," O'Farrell said. </p><p>Indeed, VMware is one of the top companies hiring for the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ibm-microsoft-hiring-kubernetes-roles-indeed-2020-3">most Kubernetes roles</a>. And previously, VMware COO Sanjay Poonen <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/vmware-kubernetes-pivotal-heptio-sanjay-poonen-2019-9">told Business Insider</a> that VMware plans to "create the largest force working on Kubernetes."</p><p>One of its newest products is Tanzu Kubernetes Grid, which helps customers install and run Kubernetes wherever they want. The product tems directly from Heptio's technology, and it's embedded into vSphere, which is VMware's long standing virtualization product. </p><p>As for Pivotal, it helps developers be more productive with products such as Spring, which helps with developing in the widespread programming language Java.</p><p>Another new product, which VMware announced Tuesday, is called VMware Cloud Foundation 4 with Tanzu. It's powered vSphere, which has been re-architected to use Kubernetes. O'Farrell says vSphere has a large existing customer base, so this new product is for those same customers.</p><p>"With VMware Cloud Foundation, we're able to target those enterprises and say we know you need to deliver cloud native solutions to your developers," O'Farrell said. VMware has spent billions on acquisitions to compete in the cloud. Now, with its former CTO at the helm, the company's new group is launching some of its first products.

At the time, the world saw the rise of Docker as an existential threat to VMware, as VMware COO Sanjay Poonen tells Business Insider at the <a href="https://finance.yahoo.com/video/innovation-break-deliver-innovation-enterprise-175422190.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">SAP-TechCrunch Conference</a> on Sept. 5.</p><p>VMware pioneered the market for virtual machines (VMs) - basically, software that tricks one server into acting like several servers, increasing efficiency. But <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/docker-ceo-steve-singh-replaced-rob-bearden-2019-5">Docker's </a>containers presented an alternative to virtual machines that allow users to package up their code so that their applications can run on any computing environment, without the headaches of maintaining a whole army of VMs. </p><p>Fast forward to today, though, and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/docker-ceo-steve-singh-replaced-rob-bearden-2019-5">Docker's star has fallen somewhat</a>, as increased competition puts pressure on its business. Meanwhile, VMware has chosen to embrace, rather than fight, the container revolution that Docker has started - specifically by making what Poonen calls a "huge bet" on <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-is-kubernetes-google-cloud-2019-1">Kubernetes</a>, an open source cloud computing project started by Google engineers that makes it easy to manage these containers and run large-scale applications.</p><p>"People were saying Docker would be a significant threat to VMware, but they disappeared," Poonen told Business Insider. "There was a massive parade that showed up called Kubernetes. We decided to join that parade and become a leader of that parade."</p><p>Today, VMware has become the second biggest contributor to the Kubernetes project - second only to Google itself.</p><p>Just August, VMware announced it <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/vmware-acquires-pivotal-carbon-black-developers-analysts-2019-8">will acquire Pivotal</a>, which is <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/pivotal-pas-kubernetes-wall-street-rob-mee-2019-7">betting on Kubernetes</a> as a major part of its strategy. Last year, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/vmware-heptio-acquisition-vmworld-kubernetes-2019-8">it acquired Heptio</a>, which was co-founded by Craig McLuckie and Joseph Beda, two former Google engineers who helped create Kubernetes.</p><p>Poonen says the goal is to "create the largest force working on Kubernetes," which he sees as critical to the company's future. </p><p>"The mystery of this whole thing is we were nowhere in this parade, and people thought of this parade as a threat to us, and people didn't think of VMware as an open source player as well," Poonen says. "Now we see this as our future. For example, it announced Project Pacific, which would embed Kubernetes into vSphere, one of VMware's flagship products that helps users manage virtual machines. </p><p>"People left with a very clear sense that VMware aspires to be the leader in the parade of Kubernetes with the moves they made in Heptio and Pivotal," Poonen said.</p><p>The company is also uniting its Kubernetes products under the Tanzu branding - with "Tanzu" being the Japanese word for "containers." Poonen says he hopes that Tanzu becomes as big of a name as VMware flagship products like ESX and vSphere.</p><p>Poonen also says he gives the Heptio team "a tremendous amount of credit" for influencing VMware into giving more code back to the open source community, whether through code or through support. </p><p>"This will be closely connected with developer mindset," Poonen said. "We hope that creates positive mindshare with developer community."</p><p>All told, Poonen says, he believes that VMware can succeed with Kubernetes as it has with virtualization.</p><p>"Why can't the company that created VMs also be the company that creates the best container and container management platform of the future?" Poonen said. "Our view is, it's not a threat. It's an opportunity. That's what I meant by joining the parade and becoming the leader of the community. We can do that effectively. Its co-founders, Craig McLuckie and Joe Beda, were two of the creators of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-is-kubernetes-google-cloud-2019-1">Kubernetes</a>, a cloud project that started when they were still at Google. </p><p>One of the fastest-growing software projects of all time, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/google-aparna-sinha-kubernetes-interview-2019-3">Kubernetes</a> helps developers easily move their applications between the cloud and private data centers, and then manage their applications running at massive scales. And, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/kubernetes-5th-anniversary-google-kubecon-2019-6">since 2014</a>, the Kubernetes code has been available as open source, meaning it's free for anyone to use, download or modify, giving rise to a massive community.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>VMware</span></p><p class="caption">Joe Beda, co-founder of Heptio and Kubernetes</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>McLuckie and Beda eventually left Google to start Heptio, which offers products and support to help make Kubernetes more friendly to businesses. Now, over eight months after Heptio came to VMware, McLuckie says that so far, they're a natural fit - namely because of the "deep engineering culture" that they share.</p><p>"When you're a startup founder, you have a choice to make: Are you buying into a vision or selling out?" McLuckie, now vice president of R&amp;D at <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/vmware-acquires-pivotal-carbon-black-developers-analysts-2019-8">VMware</a>, told Business Insider.</p><p>To that point, he says, VMware is giving Heptio the resources it needs to really dig in on Kubernetes. </p><p>"When you're a small startup with a relatively modest team, there are very few things to move the state of the art forward," McLuckie said. "<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-vmware-aws-outposts-hybrid-cloud-2018-12">VMware</a> has a very strong engineering culture. The quality of engineers here is as good as anything I've seen in the industry. When you're a little startup, everything you do, you have to build from the ground up."</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>VMware</span></p><p class="caption">Craig McLuckie, co-founder of Heptio and vice president of R&amp;D at VMware</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><h2><strong>The future of VMware</strong></h2><p>For VMware's part, Kubernetes itself is a big bet on the future of the company.</p><p>VMware made its name with a technology called virtualization, which allows for a physical server to be chopped up into any number of so-called "virtual machines," making more efficient use of its resources. It's one of the foundational technologies of modern cloud computing, allowing companies like Amazon or Microsoft to serve millions of customers from their hyper-efficient data centers. </p><p>However, Kubernetes, and technologies like it, are changing the game. The underlying technology here is called "containers," allowing developers to easily pack applications up such that they run exactly the same on their MacBook as they do on a massive cloud. It's a simple, but powerful idea - and one that some people think could one day replace virtualization, especially when building cloud software. </p><p>And so, the company has been doubling down on Kubernetes, to stay ahead of the curve. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/vmware-ceo-pat-gelsinger-security-products-2018-10">VMware</a> has been contributing even more code to the Kubernetes project. Today, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/analysts-say-amazon-and-vmware-are-teaming-up-to-take-down-microsoft-2018-12">VMware</a> has become <a href="https://k8s.devstats.cncf.io/d/9/companies-table?orgId=1&amp;var-period_name=Last%20year&amp;var-metric=contributions">the #2 contributor</a> to Kubernetes - second only to Google, where the project originated. </p><p><em><strong>Read more: </strong><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-is-kubernetes-google-cloud-2019-1">Everything you need to know about Kubernetes, the Google-created open source software so popular even Microsoft and Amazon had to adopt it</a><br /></em></p><p>VMware has put more money where its mouth is, as well: In the time since Business Insider's conversation with Heptio, VMware announced the $2.7 billion acquisition of developer software company Pivotal - which, like VMware itself, is a subsidiary of Dell. Pivotal, too, has its own Kubernetes technology to bring to the table.</p><h2><span style="color: #000000;">VMware's big push towards Kubernetes</span></h2><p>Even before Heptio came along, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-vmware-aws-outposts-hybrid-cloud-2018-12">VMware</a> had been slowly integrating Kubernetes support into core products like vSphere. Still, VMware was looking for people or startups that could bring in more perspective on the technology, McLuckie says. </p><p>Now settled in at VMware, Heptio is hard at work using its Kubernetes engineering expertise to help customers get started, even as they influence the direction of the new parent company's product lines. </p><p>For example, this week, VMware introduced a new product at its VMworld conference called Tanzu Mission Control, which came out of a project that Heptio started before its acquisition. It allows companies to manage, secure, and monitor their Kubernetes applications. </p><p>Several of VMware's products now incorporate Heptio's technology, too, like <keyword id="6356323" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="enterprise">Enterprise</keyword> PKS and Cloud PKS, two services to help VMware customers manage Kubernetes, right alongside their more traditional VMware infrastructure. And subscriptions to Heptio's support services are also accessible to VMware customers. </p><p>Paul Fazzone, senior vice president and general manager at VMware, says that all of VMware's major product groups are participating in contributing code to the main Kubernetes project. "That's incredibly valuable to our customers. They're on budget constraints. They're implementing a technology for the first time. They want to look good to their boss."</p><h2><strong>'It has certainly changed the game'</strong></h2><p>Fazzone says the first six months post-acquisition were about bringing together its teams in a "thoughtful" way. Together, they looked at what VMware was building and what Heptio was building to figure out how both teams could complement each other's efforts.</p><p>Now, they're focusing on building products, as well as engaging with and educating customers. </p><p>"Now that we have the team fully integrated and settled down, I'm really excited about the caliber of external product and engineering talent we're able to integrate into the team," Fazzone said. "I'm really excited for the next two years, being heads down, building great products, delighting our customers, and emerging as clear leaders in this category."</p><p>Back when Heptio was still on its own, McLuckie says that as he looked at the work that needed to be done to support business customers, and he realized Heptio wasn't going to be able to fully help enterprises on his own. That's where VMware came in. </p><p>One of the best things about the acquisition, is having access to even more engineering resources, not to mention sales and marketing capabilities, McLuckie says. He says it has "changed the game," and now, Heptio has an even more global reach. </p><p>And although Heptio was founded by the creators of Kubernetes, McLuckie says that VMware has boosted its credibility even further.</p><p>"When you're a 100-person startup and show up at a bank and say, 'We can do that,' there were a number of organizations who were willing to take a bet on us," McLuckie. "Now, the credibility goes up so much more. For me, it certainly has changed the game.
