<ul><li>Tanishq’s latest Ekatvam Diwali ad stirred up a new row of controversy on social media for promoting a crackerless Diwali. </li><li>The brand was quick to delete its ad this time. </li><li>This made us wonder if brands are setting a wrong precedent by pulling down their advertisements and giving in to these bullies too quickly? Will consumers lose faith in the brand for backtracking and its lack of confidence? </li><li>Experts tell us their thoughts and ideal ways of dealing with online trolling. </li></ul>Tanishq has found itself in troubled waters yet again. On November 09, #BoycottTanishq was trending on Twitter for another advertisement under its on-going ‘Ekatvam’ (unity) campaign and this time, we are scratching our heads to find a reason why it offended the internet users. The ad featured four independent actors Sayani Gupta, Neena Gupta, Alaya F and Nimrat Kaur talking about what they love about Diwali and how they are going to celebrate the festival this year. The ad is about female companionship and oneness. It celebrates successful women and positions itself as a brand that caters to women of all ages. Tanishq’s latest ad wasn’t just about promoting a noise-free Diwali, contrary to what trolls think. It was about celebrating Diwali with family and not bursting crackers was just one of the messages they gave. The message which offended many internet users wasn’t the central thread of the ad. It was woven around the message of equality and togetherness. Its caption read, “This Diwali, let’s unite and celebrate with those closest to our hearts.” While many experts say that religion is a tough subject to handle and brands should be careful in the way they project themselves, this time, Tanishq played it safe. It only featured Hindu, upper-caste and class women celebrating Diwali. So, what was the problem? It seems like the memories of the previous storm were still fresh and the mere sight of Tanishq is offending Twitterati. They were quick to jump in to ask for another boycott for ‘trying to advise Hindus on how to celebrate their festivals’ and ‘defame their culture.’ “Why should anyone advise Hindus how to celebrate Our Festivals? Companies must focus on selling their products, not lecture us to refrain from bursting Crackers. We will light lamps, distribute sweets and burst green crackers. Please join us. You will understand Ekatvam,” said a user. “Saw a recent ad campaign by Tanishq Jewelry where some bimbos prattle vacuously about how Deepavali is about buying clothes and jewellery. Looks like this is the new woke line. Strip Deepavali of all religious significance and make it a kind of a glorified kitty party with lights,” said another Twitter user. In both these controversies, Tanishq was quick to withdraw its ad and apologise for hurting religious sentiments. This made us wonder if brands are setting a wrong precedent by pulling down their advertisements and giving in to these rabble-rousers too quickly? The last time, Tanishq withdrew its ad because the safety of its employees was in danger and so far, for its recent ad, it has just been social media outrage. Powerful brands like Tanishq have the resources to stand up to these bullies. Brands are also aware of the volatile climes they live in and how advertisements can irk some internet users. So, are brands not hiring good media planners? Will consumers lose faith in the brand for backtracking and its lack of confidence? A larger question every CMO ponders upon, what is the ideal way to deal with these online bullies? We reached out to experts to find out. Here is what they had to say: Lloyd Mathias, Business Strategist and Angel Investor: I am surprised that Tanishq chose to take down the ad in the face of social media backlash. I am sure the brand foresaw the likely controversy when they chose to go down this path – so backtracking now is a little surprising and doesn’t speak well for their planning. It is important for companies and brands to respect public sentiment. After all, a brand and a company exists within a larger community and all it does is have to reflect the values of its users and the larger society it operates in. Thanks to their reach and heft, brands have become important elements in shaping culture, influencing behaviour and moulding opinion. It is therefore important for them to proactively do the right thing, even though it may have short-term implications for their business. Harish Bijoor, Brand Guru &amp; Founder, Harish Bijoor Consults Inc: I very simply believe that brands must avoid touching topics that either directly or indirectly touch politics or religion. Anything that touches these two or adjacent issues such as custom and tradition, must be avoided. These are sensitive times. Avoid issues that sensitize audiences further. Akshara Vasavda, Creative Lead, Schbang: Another <keyword id="2851713" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tanishq-Ad">Tanishq ad</keyword> taken down because of angry trolls upset over someone saying we shouldn't burst firecrackers, because you know, we're kind of in the middle of a pandemic and an on-going climate crisis in general. How dare they? First, let's focus on the real issue - the extremists dominating much of the Indian media and social media right now, spreading their intolerance in almost every sphere of our lives. There is no platform where one can express their (very reasonable and justified) views freely without getting attacked by angry extremist trolls. Whether or not Tanishq should have taken the ad down is a separate conversation. They are still yet another victim of growing extremism in our country, albeit a very privileged victim with power and resources to fight this issue and bring some much needed change. Should Tanishq have taken this ad down? Absolutely not. I work on a brand 100x smaller than Tanishq that was attacked for a week straight for a simple social media post on Navratri, but we stuck to our cause and fought the trolls off with a team of 3 girls handling ORM. I simply do not see why a brand like Tanishq feels forced to take the ad down except for maybe, just maybe, they want to have their cake and eat it too - please the progressives but be in the good books of conservatives/right wing audience as well. Afterall, their sales come from the old and the rich. Or maybe, they want the controversy. Whatever the reason is, I'm out of sympathy for this TATA giant, when small, independent brands are not afraid to stand up in the face of right-wing suppression of speech. Kuber Chopra, Founder, Creative and Strategy Director, Rasta: What Tanishq is dealing with is not a "might offend someone" mindset, it's got to a point where the trolls have simply marked some brands as too liberal for their liking. Just like they would mark some popular liberal voices as those to quash dare they speak. While I did feel when they released the last ad, they would have been conscious of potential backlash, on this occasion they're just dealing with depressing brainwashed mindsets that are going to continue to get offended by the sight of Tanishq. They are probably offended by this because there are 4 independent women and no men in a Diwali ad (albeit it's a jewelry ad) speaking English. I'm honestly a little saddened to suggest a hack for this, but if Tanishq doesn’t think putting a brave front is worth it, they should change the script and redo the voice over perhaps in Hindi. If they want to be brave they can release little snippets of each of these women lighting dias and a little story about who they are, where they're celebrating Diwali. And of course, doing nothing is also a strategy. Hope Tanishq has the best Diwali and open minded Diwali shoppers make their wallets heard. Akshaara Lalwani, CEO &amp; Founder, Communicate India: Conceptualization of an ad campaign is backed by the vision to create an emotional connect with the audience. While ṭhis attempt may at times click well for the brand, there is a possibility of it backfiring too, especially during such sensitive times, when the world is battling through a global health crisis and emotions are heightened. However, keeping that in mind, it is also imperative for brands to believe in its value system and not change as per audience receptiveness. Thus, pulling down the ad wasn't the best way to deal with this situation and only reflected the lack of belief in the idea that the brand had executed through this campaign If we observe the audience engagement post-global-lockdown, it has reflected an upsurge in the rate of social media trolls. Having had the technological access and ample amount of time at hand, people are consuming content on a larger scale and hence brands have been put under the microscopic lenses. In order to deal with such trolls, brands need to evaluate and understand the sentiment that the campaign has brought forth among the audiences. Basis the audience reaction, devising a strategy that helps communicate the campaign’s authentic idea is the best way to tackle the situation at hand. Amyn Ghadiali, Vice President -Business &amp; Strategy, Gozoop: It definitely sets a wrong precedent. I believe that more than trolls, the customers also lose faith in the brand because it doesn’t have the courage to see through things that they actually believe in. If I were the brand custodian at Tanishq, the fundamental question I would ask myself is that do I believe in what I am saying &amp; are the ones trolling me/ my customers? If they are, then I would really like to understand their POV better rather than pulling down the ad. If they are random trolls, who never would be able to afford my brand, why even bother? Also, if a brand believes in a progressive society, I would want to have customers who share that ideology. Look at how Jeff Bezos supported black lives matter. I wouldn’t call it strategy, I would simply call them principles. We all know principles mean nothing if they don’t cost us something. The best way to deal with trolls is to create an army of brand advocates that stand by your decision and belief. In-case of a polarising debate like that of Tanishq or for that matter any brand, it is important to have a spine and stick through. People who support your belief system will come forward, defend you and in-fact respect you even more.

Is Tanishq’s Ekatvam Diwali ad being pulled down setting a wrong precedent?

<ul><li>Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI) also received a complaint against the <keyword id="10099376" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="tanishq-advertisement">Tanishq advertisement</keyword>, stating that it promoted communal intermingling. </li><li>The industry body has, however, dismissed the consumer complaint. </li></ul>Tanishq launched a campaign ‘Ekatvam’, which showed the baby shower of a Hindu woman married to a Muslim man. The ad, if anything, celebrated inclusivity by showcasing an inter-faith marriage. The ad however, did not go down well with a lot of people. The ad was trolled by people who said it normalized ‘Love jihad’. The brand, to the disappointment of a lot of people, succumbed to this social media trolling and removed it from all its social media handles. The Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI) also received a complaint against the Tanishq advertisement, stating it to be objectionable since it promoted communal intermingling and the industry body has dismissed the complaints. The advertisement in question was viewed at ASCI by an independent multi stakeholder panel- The Consumer Complaints Council, which balances view points from industry, civil society, lawyers, consumer activists as well as domain experts. This panel was unanimous that nothing in the advertisement was indecent or vulgar or repulsive, which is likely in the light of generally prevailing standards of decency and propriety, to cause grave and widespread offence. The complaint was not upheld, as the advertisement did not violate the ASCI codes of honesty, truthfulness and decency in advertising. Therefore, ASCI has no objection to the airing of this advertisement, should the advertiser choose to do so. The India Chapter of the International Advertising Association (IAA) appealed to the concerned Governments to take a serious view of such intimidating behaviour. It said that any attempt to stifle with the fundamental right to express and receive commercial expression as guaranteed in Section 19 (1) (A) of the Constitution of India, should be condemned in the strongest of terms. IAA spokesperson said, "The IAA has always stood for freedom of commercial speech and expression, self-regulation and gender-parity. Our many meaningful initiatives in these areas stand testimony to that commitment. The marcom industry has always used its creative depth to create messages that promote amity, peace and harmony in every area of life and work. . The events which led to the recent Tanishq advertisement being pulled back are very unfortunate. While we respect the opinion of every individual on subjective matters, these should not descend to illegal threats and anti-social behaviour. We appeal to the concerned Governments to take a serious view of such intimidating behaviour and take exemplary action where required to ensure that businesses are provided a safe environment to communicate their brand advertising messages and contribute to economic resurgence of the country. Advertising Agencies Association of India (AAAI) also disapproved the targeting of the recent <keyword id="2851713" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tanishq-Ad">Tanishq ad</keyword> featuring an inter-faith couple. In a statement released to the press, The association said, " The threats against Tanishq as well as its employees, which led to the withdrawal of the advertisement, are a matter of great regret and concern. The advertisement in question, in fact, had been viewed at the Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI) by an independent panel- The Consumer Complaints Council, which is representative of multiple stakeholders from industry, civil society, lawyers and consumer activists. The panel found nothing in the advertisement that was indecent or objectionable or repulsive that could lead to grave and widespread offence. There is a consensus among all allied bodies and The International Advertising Association (IAA) India Chapter and The Advertising Club also support this." Tanishq had also issued an apology and pulled down its ad after its employees received several threats. “The idea behind the Ekatvam campaign is to celebrate the coming together of people from different walks of life, local communities and families during these challenging times and celebrate the beauty of oneness. This film has stimulated divergent and severe reactions, contrary to its very objective,” said Tanishq Spokesperson.

Nothing in the Tanishq ad was indecent, vulgar or repulsive: ASCI

<ul><li>Social media trolls are not going to disappear from the internet anytime soon.</li><li>Trolls can heavily tarnish a brand’s image, also significantly impacting the brand’s marketing plans to promote any newly launched product or service. </li><li>Tanvi Bosmia, Associate Account Director - Brand Experience, SoCheers shares some tips on how to deal with social media trolls.</li></ul>We’re living in an era where access to the internet is super easy. People love sharing their unfiltered opinion on social media considering it has always been a space for freedom of expression whether it’s a compliment for the brand or a complaint against them. Each individual is entitled to their opinion, no matter the impact it could have on the person or the brand on the receiving end. Brands today need to have a social media presence, period. It’s the easiest way to reach an exponentially large audience. And with all the positive aspects of this exposure, there also comes a negative side - the Trolls! Though ‘boycott culture’ is as old as social media, unfortunately, 2021 can be labelled a year of outrage as many brands were made to pull off their ads. For instance, Tata’s jewellery brand, Tanishq, faced a considerable amount of backlash for its advertisement showcasing their new collection Ekatvam, featuring an interfaith babyshower. The brand got heavily trolled for promoting inter-faith marriages and “love jihad”, and soon saw a boycott trend as well. This led to a fall in stocks for Titan amid all the trolling and Tanishq pulling the video down, even though the Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI) said that there was nothing indecent or vulgar or repulsive in the advertisement, to cause grave and widespread offense. Similarly, there were many campaigns like Manyavar’s “Kanyamaan”, Dabur’s Karwachauth ad, Sabyasachi's "Mangalsutra Collection'', FabIndia's “Jashn-e-Riwaaz” and so on and so forth, who faced major fallout for their progressive thoughts. Unfortunately, such trolls can heavily tarnish a brand’s image, also significantly impacting the brand’s marketing plans to promote any newly launched product or service. This also leads to the brand’s message getting lost in all the chaos created by these trolls. This in turn leads to upsetting consumers who are actually there with genuine intent. Here are some solutions for managing these troll situations better: <ol><li>Effective ORM Practices: Trolls don’t always easily stand out and it could be difficult for the brand to identify between an unhappy customer and a troll. Usually, trolls initiate a conversation which is controversial in nature whereas an unhappy customer will settle down once their complaint is addressed and resolved. The timing is super important and considering how fast social media platforms move, it’s essential for the brand to ensure that they respond within an hour’s time and give out a contact number/email ID to write to or simply ask them to “DM” (direct message) to take the conversation further. Any delay in response from the brand’s end can lead to speculation and stir up further agitation in the customer. Timely responses play a very important role and can go a long way in converting the unhappy customers into a part of their community which will also help in weakening the troll community.</li></ol>1. Do(n’t) Engage With Trolls: Once the brand has identified a troll, indulging in a conversation with them could be tricky. Anything that goes out from the brand’s handle on social media is a direct reflection on the company and one wrong response could have an entirely irreversible and negative impact on the brand image. Hence, responding with factually correct information can help defeat these trolls. Having said that, it is also difficult to reason with trolls and getting into an argument with them could only fuel the fire further. So, in such cases, the ideal solution for the brand would be to report their messages/comments and also watch out for anyone else interacting with the troll to avoid it from escalating. 2. Effective Crisis Management: Setting up a crisis committee who can create a plan of action that consists of all the possible solutions for every type of message or comment can help the brand to be prepared for anything that comes next and tackle it accordingly. Social Listening is a really effective way to monitor and track any negative sentiment that pops up about the brand on the internet and makes it easier to take action in real time. There are various listening tools that can help to effectively tackle the trolls, avert any such crisis and avoid the brand image from getting hampered. 3. Making Happy Customers Your Spokesperson: Set clear guidelines to ensure that all communication that goes out from the brand handle is religiously/politically safe and doesn’t hurt anyone’s sentiments. Identify brand ambassadors from their followers who ardently follow everything that they post and can speak for the brand, building a positive sentiment about the company. Maintain full transparency and put out content that showcases the values the brand stands for and how valuable their customers and their feedback is for them. This, in the long run will help build a community that will also police these trolls and stand by the brand in crisis situations. For instance, Flipkart got trolled last year after one of its service executives told a customer that the company cannot deliver goods in Nagaland because it doesn’t “deliver outside India”. The response was probably a genuine error; however, it was too late by the time Flipkart realized and apologized since they had already been hit by the trolls. To sum it up, social media trolls are not going to disappear from the internet anytime soon. The best way to avoid getting trolled is to be fully prepared and set up a process with the team that manages the brand handles on how they will deal with trolls or unhappy customers before any such situation arises. Once the process is in place, based on learnings, the brand can chart out a detailed plan of action on how they will address &amp; tackle the various different situations that could arise in the future and also ensure the brand image is intact.

During such volatile times, brands who advertise might face backlash for supporting the games that could be a threat to many lives.</li><li><keyword id="6374528" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="toyota">Toyota</keyword>, for instance, has already pulled the plug on advertising and Coca-Cola said that it wouldn't be deploying any physical Olympic activations in Japan.</li><li>So, with subdued interest in the Olympics, is it best for brands to conserve the marketing spends till consumers spend and sentiment picks up? Is there a chance of their sponsorship backfiring and coming across as insensitive and tone deaf? We speak to brand experts to find out.</li></ul>After a year’s delay, the once-in-four-years summer sporting event Olympics, finally began on July 23, sans spectators. However, COVID-19 infections in Tokyo also continue to rise. According to PTI, it breached the 100-mark on Friday, with 19 more participants testing positive for the infection. The Czech contingent seemed among the worst hit after a fourth athlete Road Cyclist, Michal Schlegel tested positive for the virus. Apart from that, three athletes, 10 Games-concerned personnel, three media persons and contractors associated with the event have been found positive. Consumers have expressed mixed feelings of terror and hope. Due to the influx of participants from around the world, Tokyo Olympics could turn into a Covid-19 superspreader event and many are calling for the games to be cancelled amid safety concerns. During such volatile times, brands who advertise might face backlash for supporting the games that could be a serious threat to many lives. For the same reason, international auto brand Toyota has already pulled the plug on its Olymoc association and Coca-Cola has said that it won't be deploying any physical Olympic activations in Japan. If the number of athletes testing positive goes up, like Indian Premier League, the games might be called off. At the same time, the NBA had 48 positive cases within one week of testing before the season, but the league still went ahead. However, with the Olympics, there is a lot at stake. According to The New York Times, these are said to be the most expensive Olympics in history, and the year-long delay has only added to the budget, $15.4 billion to be precise. If the event is cancelled, IOC may have to refund around $4 billion. Despite the trepidation, brands remain unshaken. In India, we have one of the largest contingents this time with 120 athletes from 85 disciplines and brands are going all out to support them. The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has signed Edelweiss, INOX Group and Nippon Paint as national sponsors. Amul, Raymond and JSW Group are game partners. Raymond has come onboard as the official styling partner. According to media reports, MPL Sports Foundation became the principal sponsor after signing a deal for Rs 80 million that covers the Tokyo Olympics and Asian and Commonwealth Games next year. Oakley, Mia by Tanishq, Visa India, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited, Puma India and sponsors JSW, Omega, BridgeStone and Rin have already launched ads to celebrate athletes representing our country at an international stage. “A big question that stresses brands sponsoring the Olympics is whether their continuance may come across as being insensitive to the havoc that Covid has caused and continues to do so,” said Lloyd Mathias, Business Strategist and former Asia-Pacific Marketing head of HP. “Many people around the world feel that the IOC’s decision to continue holding the Games is inappropriate and seems tone deaf to the reality on the ground. Brands that are associating with the Olympics must stay watchful in their communication and ensure that their brand stays empathetic to the devastating impact that the pandemic has caused, while celebrating sporting excellence. Also, supporting the Indian contingent is always a worthy cause,” added Mathias. But will they get the best bang for their buck? N. Chandramouli, CEO, TRA Research said, “There is a lot of controversy regarding the hosting of the games now. Many think it would have been appropriate to postpone the Olympics by a year, but the cascading impact on the organizers and host country would have been financially devastating to force this decision. It's being called the $20 Billion bust for Japan as the money spent on the stadia will largely go unused. Hosting the Olympics in the middle of the pandemic will leave many sponsoring brands in a quandary if they will get ROI for the money spent. When the host-country Japanese brands are pulling back from advertising, including the Olympic title sponsor, Indian brands will likely do no different. The key mantra to survive Covid as a business is to keep the marketing powder dry, so as to be able to use it at the time when it is likely to give the maximum returns. With subdued interest in the Olympics it is best brands conserve the marketing spends till consumer spends pick up.” Chandramouli said that brands should support a few players/games, in which the likelihood of India winning is high. This once-in-four-years sporting event attracts eyeballs from across the world hosting sports such as shooting, wrestling, long jump, and hockey. It brings an opportunity for Indian brands to be present on a global platform supporting Indian athletes that elicits feelings of national pride and togetherness. Albeit, low or no spectator events and a lower advertiser interest is likely to have a lower revenue for the games and casual watchers might opt-out. “Viewers have been deprived of quality live sport for much of 2020, though the last few months have been good. Also, many brands are looking at the next few months to ramp up their marketing given that the Covid second wave is behind us and hopefully the third wave will not be as severe. Also, with the festive season fast approaching this makes for a great TV property,” said Mathias. For brands that have associated with the summer games, Harish Bijoor, Founder, Harish Bijoor Consult advised to stay clear of on-ground activations. Bijoor said, “I do believe the Tokyo Olympics should have been scrapped altogether at the altar of the Pandemic. Sadly, that is not to be. My advice to brands would be to use the event as a pure digital property and avoid all on-ground activation. No brand wants to be associated with the image of a superspreader sponsor. Brands must therefore stay cautious. Yes, brands want to get viral, but Covid is not the virus to ride!” Overall, brand experts advise brands to be careful of their messaging, be more active on digital mediums to reach out to global sports fans and only associate with clear-winning games.

With rising COVID-19 cases associated with the Olympic Games, will brands get the most bang for their buck?

India has always been a country of taboos and restrictions. But things have been changing fast, and for the good. And since advertising is a reflection of the society, many recent Indian ads have reflected those behavioural changes that are evident in the modern Indian. 
Below is a list of some recent Indian ads that defy the preconceived social norms and taboos. 
 
1. Myntra’s Lesbian Ad: This is probably the most-talked about ad in India right now. The country's first advertisement showing a lesbian couple preparing to meet the parents is making waves on social media. The online video shows two women in a live-in relationship flirting and dressing up for the day, chatting about the expectations they face and their love for each other. Titled 'The Visit', the ad breaks the taboo of lesbianism in India. Shot for Myntra's ethnic wear collection, the digital film has got over 2 lakh hits on YouTube over 10 days. 
 
 
 
2. Fastrack’s Move On Campaign: It is argued that before Myntra, Fastrack was the brand that brought out the lesbian issues out in the open through its ‘Move On’ campaign. Move On is a controversial ad campaign by Fastrack was to show the relevance of “moving on” from things that are limiting. The campaign involved a series of short ads representing socio-cultural issues that are controversial. One of the ads shows a couple inflating a large playhouse and moving in. The ad ends with bold white-coloured text saying “Live in. Move on.”, hence encouraging those who want to have live-in relationships to go ahead and do so. Another of the ads under this campaign show two girls walking out of a bright pink closet, one by one, tugging at their clothes with the copy “Come out of the closet. Move on.”, thus encouraging homosexuals to embrace their sexuality. All these ads talk about being bold in accepting issues considered taboo, especially when it’s about accepting oneself. 
 
 
 
3. Tanishq’s Second Marriage Ad: Widowed and divorced women have historically been shunned in areas of India.
