If caught early, like in Hembrow's case, the <a href="https://www.cancercenter.com/cancer-types/melanoma/stages" target="_blank" rel="noopener">5-year survival rate</a> of melanoma is 99%. In later stages of the disease, however, it can dip to 32%. </p><p>"I am so, so, so lucky that I went and got my skin checked," she said in the video, encouraging her fans to do the same. "Please get regular skin checks. It can honestly be life-saving."</p><p>She ended the video with a trigger warning before revealing the post-surgery stitches on her leg to "scare" people into getting skin screenings.</p><h2><strong>There is no "safe" way to tan, especially if you've had skin cancer in the past</strong></h2><p>Melanoma is considered to be the <a href="https://www.insider.com/guides/health/conditions-symptoms/types-of-skin-cancer">deadliest form of skin cancer</a> and <a href="https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fmed.2018.00235/full" target="_blank" rel="noopener">sun exposure is still considered the leading risk factor</a> in developing it. It can be caused by UV rays that penetrate the skin and damage the DNA in your skin cells, which can result in cancer-causing mutations.</p><p>Both UVA and UVB rays can cause skin cancer, <a href="https://www.cancer.org/cancer/risk-prevention/sun-and-uv/uv-radiation.html#:~:text=UVA%20rays%20have%20the%20least,role%20in%20some%20skin%20cancers." target="_blank" rel="noopener">according to the American Cancer Society</a>, though UVA rays are linked to more long-term skin damage. </p><p>While <a href="https://www.insider.com/guides/health/does-sunscreen-prevent-tanning">many sunscreens can protect against UVB rays</a>, which cause sunburn, most American sunscreens offer less protection from the deeper-penetrating UVA rays, which cause your skin to tan. </p><p>Given that Hembrow is Australian and has access to <a href="https://www.insider.com/american-vs-european-asian-sunscreen-2023-6">better sunscreens than in the US</a>, she might have slightly better sun protection.
