Chennai, Even as the <keyword id="20154" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tamil-nadu" source="Orion">Tamil Nadu</keyword> has been maintaining that the <keyword id="8764262" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="covid" source="Orion">Covid</keyword> surge in the state is not fearsome, the public health department has warned the elderly people and those with co-morbidities to wear masks and not to move around in crowded places. While speaking to media persons, Director of Tamil Nadu's Public Health services, T.S. Selvavinayagam, said, "We advise the elderly people and those with co-morbidities to stay away from closed spaces and to wear masks and maintain social distancing when they are outside places." In the last 24 hours, Tamil Nadu recorded 493 fresh cases. With this, the total number of active cases in the state has reached 2876 cases. Among the active Covid-19 cases reported, 137 were admitted to hospitals, two were in intensive care units (ICUs) while 51 were administered oxygen therapy. The daily Test Positivity Rate (TPR) in the state is 8.6. Chengalpattu and Kanniyakumari reported 12 and 11 TPR respectively while Chennai reported 10. Except for Ramanathapuram, Kallakurichi, Tenkasi and Villupuram, all other districts recorded fresh Covid cases in the last 24 hours in Tamil Nadu. Chennai is the highest with 132 new cases followed by Coimbatore (43), Kanniyakumari (41), Chengalpattu (31), Tiruvallur (26) and Salem (23). Seven districts of the state reported fresh Covid-19 cases between 10 and 19 while the other districts reported in single digits. The TN health department has however said that there were no reasons to panic as the state has not witnessed any large rapidly rising clusters as was witnessed during the first three phases of Covid-19. TN: Elderly, those with co-morbidities asked to wear masks as Covid surges

The Tamil Nadu government has brought in a series of measures to restrict the surge in Covid-19 cases. The measures include banning of religious events from April 10 onwards. E-Pass will continue to be implemented for those travelling from other states and countries and Public worship will be permitted till 8 p.m. only. Total lockdown will be implemented in containment zones without any relaxations across the state. Retail outlets in Koyambedu wholesale vegetable and fruit markets will be closed. Vegetable and Fruit markets will remain closed across Tamil Nadu. Passengers will not be allowed to travel by standing in long distance buses for <keyword id="6354306" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Puducherry">Puducherry</keyword>, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. The commuters will not be allowed to stand in private buses within the <keyword id="12864" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Chennai">Chennai</keyword> limits also. Restaurants and Tea Shops will be allowed to function with 50 per cent of its allowed strength. Restaurants will be allowed to function till 11 p.m. daily. Museums, Entertainment parks/amusement parks, conference halls, zoological parks will be permitted with 50 per cent capacity. Marriage events will be permitted with a maximum ceiling of 100 people and fifty people will be allowed at the funerals. Sports stadiums and playgrounds will be permitted with no audience and sports training will be permitted in swimming pools. Business to business will be allowed in exhibition halls. Cabs and Taxis will have only three passengers other than the driver and two passengers other than the driver will be permitted in auto rickshaws. Tamil Nadu bring in new restrictions as cases of COVID-19 spike aross the state

The industrial and commercial city of <keyword id="20154" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tamil-Nadu" source="Orion">Tamil Nadu</keyword>, <keyword id="6361828" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Coimbatore" source="Orion">Coimbatore</keyword> is turning into the state's Covid hotspot as the positivity rate has increased to 26.6 per cent. In a statement on Monday, Coimbatore District Collector G.S. Sameeran called upon the people to strictly follow Covid appropriate behaviour to prevent the spread of the infection. Sameeran also urged those who have not taken the vaccination and irected those who are eligible for the second dose of vaccine to take the jab at the earliest. He said that vaccination facilities are available round the clock at the ESI Hospital, Coimbatore Medical College Hospital, and other taluk level hospitals. The District Collector also said that Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) had witnessed a surge much before Coimbatore and now the Covid cases are coming down in GCC. COVID-19: 60 students test positive in Bengaluru school

The new Covid-19 containment restrictions enforced in <keyword id="20154" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="tamil-nadu">Tamil Nadu</keyword> by the <keyword id="51011" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="state-government">state government</keyword> have come into force from 4 a.m. on Thursday, officials said, adding the new measures will continue till May 20. With new enforcements in force, heavy rush that was earlier witnessed in the roads of Chennai, Madurai, Coimbatore, Trichy and other towns has come down. Tamil Nadu Chief secretary Rajeev Ranjan in an order said that all state government offices will function with 50 per cent staff strength for a fortnight, beginning Thursday. The order said that the secretaries to governments, head of departments, district collectors, will have an attendance schedule of the workforce. The employees must be in shifts of either on alternate days or once in three days as per the requirement of the workload. Private offices will also have to function with a 50 per cent workforce. Public transport, railways, <keyword id="45347" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Metro-rail">metro rail</keyword>, public and private buses will operate with only 50 per cent of their occupancy. Grocery shops (standalone) will be permitted to operate till 12 p.m. Grocery and vegetable shops in shopping complexes are not allowed to operate. All other shops other than grocery and vegetable shops will be closed. Shopping malls and other big shops have not been allowed to operate in the state since April 26. State government and public sector outlets will be allowed to function till 12 p.m. Restaurants will not be allowed to take sit-in customers while takeaways will be permitted from 6-10 a.m., 12-3 p.m., and from 6-9 p.m. Cinema halls will remain shut and all social, political and cultural gatherings are prohibited in open or closed spaces. "I think it is better to go for a lockdown rather than this. But the heavy financial losses is the reason for the government pulling back from the lockdown, it seems," Mukundarajan, an employee with a private company, told <keyword id="105681" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IANS">IANS</keyword>. Tamil Nadu government enforces new COVID-19 restrictions in the state

Tamil Nadu extends COVID-19 restrictions till December 31 — Chennai’s Marina beach to re-open after two weeks

When there’s a vaccine shortage, it goes without saying that responsible use is key to ensuring that not a drop goes wasted. And the zero vaccine wastage rates in states like Kerala and West Bengal show that the task is not impossible. To boost the supply of vaccines in the market, the government has also <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/science/health/news/if-you-are-18-years-or-older-you-can-get-a-covid-19-vaccine-from-may-1/articleshow/82147121.cms">proposed</a> a 50/50 model. This where half of the supply of Covaxin and Covishield will go directly to the central government, whereas the other half will be available in the open market to private hospitals and state governments. International players are also free to join the fray with any ‘ready to use’ vaccines. The imports of these vaccines will go into the non-central government route of procurement. The <keyword id="95879" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Serum-Institute-of-India">Serum Institute of India</keyword> (SII) has <a href="https://health.economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/finance/india-to-fund-capacity-boost-at-serum-institute-as-covid-19-vaccines-run-short-source/82144992">reportedly</a> received an advance of ₹3,000 crore from the Indian government to scale up production. Bharat Biotech, which makes Covaxin, has received another ₹1,500 crore. According to Union Health secretary Rajesh Bhushan, the issue isn’t that there is a shortage of vaccines — despite what some states may claim — but the lack of better planning. “We have made available vaccine doses to states and union territories from time to time and as we told you earlier that to bigger states we give supply of four days at once and on fourth and fifth day we replenish the supply. 4.6 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine were wasted in India — enough to vaccinate half of Bangalore

<keyword id="3658" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword> logged 45,951 new coronavirus infections taking the total tally of COVID-19 cases to 3,03,62,848, while daily fatalities remained below 1,000 for the third consecutive day, according to the Union Health Ministry data updated on Wednesday. The death toll rose to 3,98,454 with 817 <keyword id="9735272" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="fresh-fatalities">fresh fatalities</keyword>, the lowest in 81 days. According to the data published at 7 am, cumulatively 33.28 crore vaccine doses have been administered so far under the Nationwide Vaccination Drive. The active cases further declined to 5,37,064 comprising 1.77 per cent of the total infections, while the national COVID-19 recovery rate has improved to 96.92 per cent, the data updated at 8 am showed. As many as 19,60,757 tests were conducted on Tuesday taking the total cumulative tests conducted so far for detection of COVID-19 in the country to 41,01,00,044 while the daily positivity rate was recorded at 2.34 per cent. It has been less than five per cent for 23 consecutive days, the ministry said, adding the weekly positivity rate has declined to 2.69 per cent. Recoveries continue to outnumber daily new cases for the 48th consecutive day. The number of people who have recuperated from the disease surged to 2,94,27,330 and the case fatality rate stands at 1.31 per cent, the data stated. India's COVID-19 tally had crossed the 20-lakh mark on August 7, 30 lakh on August 23, 40 lakh on September 5 and 50 lakh on September 16. It went past 60 lakh on September 28, 70 lakh on October 11, crossed 80 lakh on October 29, 90 lakh on November 20 and surpassed the one-crore mark on December 19. India crossed the grim milestone of two crore on May 4 and three crore on June 23. The 817 new fatalities include 231 from <keyword id="13126" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Maharashtra">Maharashtra</keyword>, 118 from <keyword id="20154" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="tamil-nadu">Tamil Nadu</keyword> and 104 from <keyword id="6354780" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Karnataka">Karnataka</keyword>. A total of 3,98,454 deaths have been reported so far in the country including 1,21,804 from Maharashtra, 34,929 from Karnataka, 32,506 from Tamil Nadu, 24,971 from Delhi, 22,577 from Uttar Pradesh, 17,679 from West Bengal and 16,033 from <keyword id="6354953" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="punjab">Punjab</keyword>. The ministry stressed that more than 70 per cent of the deaths occurred due to comorbidities. "Our figures are being reconciled with the Indian Council of Medical Research," the ministry said on its website, adding that state-wise distribution of figures is subject to further verification and reconciliation.
