The <keyword id="19896558" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tamil-Nadu" source="keywords">Tamil Nadu</keyword> government's health department has increased surveillance in several villages of <keyword id="19915273" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Coimbatore" source="keywords">Coimbatore</keyword> District against the spread of the dreaded <keyword id="21571718" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="West-Nile-Virus" source="keywords">West Nile Virus</keyword> and deployed 12 <keyword id="21617462" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mobile-Medical-Teams" source="keywords">Mobile Medical Teams</keyword> (MMT) to screen people in 12 blocks. This is following many districts of <keyword id="19896018" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kerala" source="keywords">Kerala</keyword> reporting cases of the West Nile Virus, which is a <keyword id="21363821" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mosquito-borne-disease" source="keywords">mosquito-borne disease</keyword>. The Coimbatore District Health Department has deployed 12 Mobile Medical Teams (MMT) to screen people with fever and influenza in 12 blocks to check whether they are infected with the virus. The disease is spread through the <keyword id="21617463" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Culex-mosquitoes" source="keywords">Culex mosquitoes</keyword> and the symptoms are high fever, stiff neck, headache, disorientation, stupor, tremors, convulsions and muscle weakness. In some cases, it even leads to coma, paralysis and death. Dr R Ramanandan, Professor of Microbiology in a private medical college in Coimbatore told IANS, "West Nile Virus is a dangerous disease and proper medication has to be given to the patients at the earliest to prevent their condition from deteriorating. If the patient is not treated on time it can lead to paralysis and even death." Deputy Director of Health Services, Dr P Aruna told IANS that the department has accelerated the screening of patients with fever in Coimbatore District after one person died and many were hospitalised in Malappuram, Kozhikode and Thrissur districts of Kerala. The state health department has also sent circulars to all the district health officers to conduct screening for the West Nile Virus in patients who undergo checks for fever in Primary Health Centres in the state.

Chennai, Even as the <keyword id="20154" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tamil-nadu" source="Orion">Tamil Nadu</keyword> has been maintaining that the <keyword id="8764262" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="covid" source="Orion">Covid</keyword> surge in the state is not fearsome, the public health department has warned the elderly people and those with co-morbidities to wear masks and not to move around in crowded places. While speaking to media persons, Director of Tamil Nadu's Public Health services, T.S. Selvavinayagam, said, "We advise the elderly people and those with co-morbidities to stay away from closed spaces and to wear masks and maintain social distancing when they are outside places." In the last 24 hours, Tamil Nadu recorded 493 fresh cases. With this, the total number of active cases in the state has reached 2876 cases. Among the active Covid-19 cases reported, 137 were admitted to hospitals, two were in intensive care units (ICUs) while 51 were administered oxygen therapy. The daily Test Positivity Rate (TPR) in the state is 8.6. Chengalpattu and Kanniyakumari reported 12 and 11 TPR respectively while Chennai reported 10. Except for Ramanathapuram, Kallakurichi, Tenkasi and Villupuram, all other districts recorded fresh Covid cases in the last 24 hours in Tamil Nadu. Chennai is the highest with 132 new cases followed by Coimbatore (43), Kanniyakumari (41), Chengalpattu (31), Tiruvallur (26) and Salem (23). Seven districts of the state reported fresh Covid-19 cases between 10 and 19 while the other districts reported in single digits. The TN health department has however said that there were no reasons to panic as the state has not witnessed any large rapidly rising clusters as was witnessed during the first three phases of Covid-19. <keyword id="20154" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="tamil-nadu" source="Orion">Tamil Nadu</keyword> Health Minister <keyword id="344917" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="ma-subramanian" source="Orion">Ma Subramanian</keyword> inspected the mass fever camp on Friday organised in the <keyword id="6361743" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="saidapet" source="Orion">Saidapet</keyword> area in Chennai. Chennai Mayor <keyword id="3346795" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="priya-rajan" source="Orion">Priya Rajan</keyword> also joined the Health Minister in inspecting the camps. "About 1000 fever camps have been set up all over Tamil Nadu of which 200 fever camps are in Chennai," Health Minister said. Recently, H3N2 virus fever broke out across the country sparking concerns. The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) in a statement asked the administrations all over to comply with the safety protocols and take necessary precautions. People have been instructed to wear masks and maintain proper hygiene to avoid the virus infection. "Apart from the fever camps, about 11,333 public health centres in the state have been instructed to conduct frequent fever check-ups," said the minister in the statement. "We have adequate medicines for the fever. As of now, there are no severe cases and there is no need to panic." The Health Minister added, "According to ICMR, we have to be cautious with H3N2 virus spread like we were during the Covid Pandemic. People with fever symptoms should isolate themselves as per ICMR guidelines to prevent spread." Reportedly, corona cases have also been increasing in Tamil Nadu and also India, in general. "RTPCR tests are done and the number of tests has been increased. There were only 2 cases last month but now it's 20 to 25 cases in Tamil Nadu and we are preparing to curtail it," assured the Health Minister. Health Minister also said, "As of now it's not a community spread of H3N2 virus in Tamil Nadu. We are taking precautions to make sure it does not spread rapidly and turn into a community spread. I appeal to the people of Tamil Nadu to avoid going to public places if they identify themselves with the symptoms and immediately inform the authorities." According to the administration, the mega fever camps will continue their operations on Saturday, Sunday and also in the coming days in the state.
