New Delhi, Commercial vehicle major <keyword id="6357085" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ashok-Leyland" source="Orion">Ashok Leyland</keyword> on Thursday said it has bagged an order to supply 552 buses from Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC). The ultra-low entry (ULE) buses would be used for public transport, the company said in a statement. Ashok Leyland has been a long-standing supplier of buses to TNSTC, having supplied over 18,477 buses till date. "This order reinforces our dedication to creating very efficient and technologically advanced products that exceed our customer expectations and contribute to the growth of public transportation," Ashok Leyland Managing Director &amp; CEO Shenu Agarwal said. The Hinduja Group flagship said it will commence the delivery of the buses within the next few months.

According to a press release, the total consideration for this order is approximately Rs 981.45 Crores. The execution period for this contract spans from August 2024 to August 2025. MSRTC operates a fleet of over 15,000 buses. With this substantial order, Ashok Leyland buses will now dominate its fleet. These modern, fully built buses will comply with the latest Central Motor Vehicle Rules (CMVR) standards and feature AIS 153 compliant bodies. The order, awarded by the domestic entity MSRTC, is for the supply of BSVI OBD II Diesel Fuel Type Fully Built Passenger Buses. MSRTC, one of India's largest state transport undertakings, operates a fleet of over 15,000 buses. With this substantial order, Ashok Leyland buses will now dominate its fleet. These modern, fully built buses will comply with the latest Central Motor Vehicle Rules (CMVR) standards and feature AIS 153 compliant bodies. They will also be equipped with the proven iGEN6 BS VI OBD II technology, boasting a 197 HP H-Series Engine and Rear Air Suspension, among other advanced features. The buses will be manufactured at Ashok Leyland's exclusive bus body plants using state-of-the-art technology, ensuring enhanced safety, improved comfort, and a lower total cost of ownership for MSRTC. The increase in wage rates in the current calendar year in North India (NI), Assam and West Bengal, in the current financial year is expected to be nullified by healthy realisations of teas, particularly producers who are focused on producing quality teas, <keyword id="6354972" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="icra" source="Orion">Icra</keyword> said in a report. In FY22, softening of realisation and increase in wage rates led to a decline in the operating margin (OPM) of players, it noted. “Notwithstanding the impact of higher wage rates, the financial performance of quality producers is likely to witness an improvement in FY23 on a year-on-year basis. Increase in prices of quality crush-tear-curl (CTC) and Orthodox (ODX) teas would enable the producers to absorb the higher cost of production due to the wage rate revision,” Icra Vice President and Sector Head, Corporate Sector Ratings, <keyword id="9062002" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="sujoy-saha" source="Orion">Sujoy Saha</keyword> said. The report stated that the ODX tea prices are ruling at an all-time high level on the back of a demand-supply mismatch in the international market due to production disruptions in Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka, the largest exporter of ODX teas globally, witnessed disruptions in production due to the current economic crisis. The production loss in Sri Lanka is likely to continue for some more time, which would keep supply tight in the international market, thus supporting prices of Indian ODX teas, said the report. Prices of NI CTC tea are also up by 5 per cent y-on-y basis, primarily driven by the sharp rise in auction prices in August 2022. The uptrend in NI CTC prices is supported by lower-than-expected production, particularly of quality estate teas, in the current season and increasing demand for good quality teas, it noted. Price premium for top quality CTC tea is likely to sustain going forward, given the limited supply base of the same, it added. However, prices of South India (grown in Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu) CTC teas remained lower compared to the previous two fiscals due to sustained production levels from bought leaves in NI, a direct competitor of SI CTC teas in terms of quality. “With ODX prices expected to sustain at a significantly higher level on a y-on-y basis, some quality producers have increased ODX production. Consequently, production of quality CTC is likely to remain flattish, which will continue to support prices of such teas as well. An analysis of tea prices indicates that the price differential of NI CTC teas, manufactured by the top 50 estates over average auction prices, increased to 137 per kg in the first 8 months CY2022 from Rs 122 per kg in CY2021,” Icra Vice President and Co-Group Head, Corporate Sector Ratings, Kaushik Das said. Till May 2022, cumulative all-India production was up 16 per cent to 320 million kg on a y-on-y basis. However, crop loss in June and July 2022, due to unfavourable weather conditions and floods, led to a 2 per cent drop in the all-India production to 614 million kg in the first seven months of CY2022 on a y-on-y basis. Given that 54 per cent of the annual production typically takes place during the last five months of any calendar year, Icra expects the overall production in CY2022 to remain flat compared to last year, although the same would remain dependent on the cropping levels till October, after which production will start to fall. In CY2021, all-India production was up by 7 per cent to 1,343 million kg on a y-on-y basis, recovering from the lows of the pandemic-impacted CY2020 season. However, it still remained 3 per cent lower compared to the record crop of CY2019, the Icra report stated. Increase in tea prices to offset impact of wage rate hike in WB, Assam: ICRA

Chennai, Alleging a scam in the supply of free laptops to the students, DMK president <keyword id="853811" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="M-K-Stalin">M.K. Stalin</keyword> on Saturday appealed to the <keyword id="6359479" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="tamil-nadu-government">Tamil Nadu government</keyword> to blacklist the Chinese company and levy a heavy penalty on the supply of the inferior products. He also said the <keyword id="26362" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Government">government</keyword> should stop payment of the ₹456 crore balance to the Chinese company. According to Stalin, the Electronics Corporation of <keyword id="20154" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="tamil-nadu">Tamil Nadu</keyword> Ltd (Elcot) had issued a tender for procurement of 15.66 lakh laptops for free supply to students at an outlay of ₹1,921 crore. Without naming the Chinese company, Stalin said the company had participated in the bid and submitted two models and test reports on their performance, while stating the price of the two models to be the same. Stalin said that as per the test reports, one laptop model has scored 465 marks and the other 265 marks, which means one of the models is inferior in performance. According to the DMK leader, the government opted to buy the lesser performing laptop model which in turn had enriched the Chinese company unduly to the tune of ₹469 crore. Not only that, one of the tender conditions was that the laptops should have the provision to increase its memory capacity from 4 GB to 8 GB, but the laptops supplied by the Chinese company did not have that facility. Stalin said the government had decided to give additional ₹392 crore for the cost of the new motherboard so that the laptops' memory capacity could be increased to 8 GB. The Leader of the Opposition in the Tamil Nadu Assembly Stalin said the state government has already paid Rs 1,465 crore to the Chinese company and steps are being taken to pay the balance of Rs 456 crore before the electoral model code of conduct kicks in. However, 10 months later, on 23 May 2019, Adani Ports entered into a ‘build, operate, transfer’ (BOT) agreement with the entity as per ACIJ’s report. The deal entails Adani Ports’ Myanmar subsidiary — the Adani Yangon International Terminal Company — constructing a container port in Yangon on MEC’s military-owned land. Come September 2019, a report by UNHRC listed out the corporations involved in operations with the MEC. Many began to review their business operations and disengaged from ongoing projects. Meanwhile, Adani Ports remained silent. But, as pressure built up, Adani Ports <a href="https://www.business-humanrights.org/en/latest-news/adani-ports-sez-ltd-did-not-respond/">categorically denied</a> engaging with Myanmar’s military leadership in order to facilitate its project in the country in February earlier this year. However, <a href="https://www.abc.net.au/news/2021-03-30/queensland-adani-ports-myanmar-military-deal/100032156">photographic and video evidence</a> sourced by ABC Australia earlier this week contradicts those claims. Adani Ports claims that the visit was a ‘cultural courtesy’ and a ‘customary practice’. “Much like our global peers, we are watching the situation in Myanmar carefully and will engage with the relevant authorities and stakeholders to seek their advice on the way forward,” said the company's spokesperson in a <a href="https://www.adaniports.com/Newsroom/Media-Releases/Media-Statement-from-Adani-Group-on-Myanmar-Situation">statement</a> on March 31. Adani’s port projects in <a href="https://www.stopadani.com/">Australia</a> and <a href="https://www.downtoearth.org.in/news/environment/why-are-ennore-residents-protesting-against-adani-s-kattupalli-port-expansion-project--75894">Tamil Nadu</a> have also received criticism from activist groups, politicians and locals over environmental concerns. The recent deal signed between Australia and India that ensured sale of uranium to India and supply of conventional fuel, including coal, to help India ride over acute energy shortage, has revived debates. People are questioning in which direction India’s <keyword id="53710" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Nuclear-energy">nuclear energy</keyword> policy is headed and the safety and feasibility of depending on <keyword id="43462" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nuclear-power">nuclear power</keyword> for the country’s power requirement. 
 
First, the deal signals improved thaw in the relationship between two countries that share trade worth AUD15 billion annually. It may be noted that India is the first country to buy Australian uranium without being a signatory to the nuclear non-proliferation treaty. Australia seems to be convinced that India will use nuclear fuel only for non-military and peaceful purposes. 
 
The pact with Australia assume special significance after India’s attempt to forge a similar tie-up with Japan failed. Though Japanese companies produce vital reactor components and are keen to supply them to India, India’s status as a non-signatory to the non-proliferation treaty has prevented positive developments in this direction. Civil nuclear energy talks were also hit after the Fukushima disaster in 2011. 
 Secondly, the pact—which marked the culmination of talks started two years ago after Australia lifted a long-standing ban on selling uranium to power-starved India—means that India is one step closer to gaining global acceptability for its nuclear programme despite its refusal to ratify the nuclear non-proliferation treaty. The country virtually became an ‘untouchable’ when it came to global initiatives to control use of nuclear power for hostile purposes and exchange of nuclear technology after it conducted its second nuclear test in Pokhran in May 1988 (the first, code-named <keyword id="858028" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Smiling-Buddha">Smiling Buddha</keyword>, being conducted in May 1974). However, the restrictions virtually fizzled out following a US deal signed in 2008 that underlined India’s burgeoning economic weight. 
 
Critics say with two-thirds of the country’s power stations being fired by coal and more than half of them are about to run out of stock, the government should have given preference to tapping into Australia's coal reserves. Nuclear power accounts for just 3 per cent of the country’s every output, compared to 3.7 percent three years ago. In fact, nuclear energy is the fourth-leading source of energy in the country behind coal (68 per cent), gas (15 percent) and hydro (12 percent). 
 
However, with 25 percent of the country’s total population having little (or no) access to electricity, the government feels that it has to increasingly rely on nuclear power as dependence on fossil sources for energy is not sustainable as reserves get depleted at a faster pace. 
 
Nuclear energy is underpenetrated, which is amply reflected by the fact that the 20 reactors that the country operates now has a combined capacity of 4,780 MW against the target of 63,000 MW by 2032 by adding nearly 30 reactors at an estimated cost of $85 billion. In line with this target, the country has signed nuclear energy agreements with 11 countries including France, Russia and Kazakhstan from where it imports uranium. 
 
However, protest from civilian groups pose the biggest threat to government’s ambitious nuclear energy targets. Both Kudankulam nuclear power project in Tamil Nadu and the 9,900 MW Jaitapur nuclear power plant to be executed by French firm Areva are stuck due to local protests. A string of hydro-power projects are also stalled due to local opposition on the basis of environmental concerns. 
 
However, with India’s status as the second-large populous nation with more than 1.2 billion people, with enormous needs—it is already the world’s fourth-largest energy consumer, behind only the US, China and Russia—the country has no option but to try and forge similar nuclear pact with other nations or face the perilous consequence of being left out in its race for being an energy-dependant country.
