With an aim to make it more convenient for <keyword id="6363733" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="braille" source="Orion">braille</keyword> readers to use the platform, tech giant <keyword id="6355629" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="google" source="Orion">Google</keyword> has announced that <keyword id="6355645" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="android" source="Orion">Android</keyword> 13 Beta will have native support for braille displays.<br /><br />The company said that it is making it easier for braille readers to use Android.<br /><br />"Available in our next Android 13 Beta in a few weeks, we are beginning to build out-of-the-box support for braille displays in <keyword id="2434235" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="talkback" source="Orion">Talkback</keyword>, our screen reader within Android," the company said in a blogpost.<br /><br />"A refreshable braille display is an electro-mechanical device that creates braille patterns by raising rounded pins through holes in a flat surface. Braille-literate computer users use the braille display to touch-read braille dots representing text," it added.<br /><br />With the display, users can also type out braille. These devices help people with deafblindness access mobile phones and people with blindness use their phones silently.<br /><br />Google mentioned that, previously, people connected their Android devices to braille displays using the BrailleBack app, which required a separate download from the <keyword id="1470391" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="play-store" source="Orion">Play Store</keyword>, or used a virtual keyboard within Talkback instead of a physical device.<br /><br />With this new update, there are no additional downloads necessary to use most braille displays.<br /><br />People can use braille displays to access many of the same features available with Talkback. <strong><br /></strong><ul><li><strong><keyword id="6355455" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="indian-railways">Indian railways</keyword> just unveiled their first <keyword id="248686" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="smart-coach">smart coach</keyword> in line with the country’s ‘<keyword id="6354869" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="make-in-India">Make in India</keyword>’ initiative.</strong></li><li><strong>The interface on-board monitors the train on two fronts, coach maintenance and passenger welfare.<br /></strong></li><li><strong>The Passenger Information and Coach Computing Unit (PICCU) has been implemented with the aim of cutting down on maintenance costs.</strong></li></ul>Riding on the ‘Make in <keyword id="3658" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword>’ wave, the Indian Railways just unveiled their first smart coach and there are a 100 more on the way. In collaboration with the <keyword id="6835217" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Modern-Coach-Factory-Raebareli">Modern Coach Factory, Raebareli</keyword>, the ordinary Linke Hofmann Busch (LHB) coaches have been upgraded to include sensors that monitor various aspects of the carriage.<br /><br />Equipped with black boxes that form a multi-dimensional communication interface, it monitors critical components of the coach that are usually responsible for derailments and delays. The sensor-based on-board condition monitoring system (OBCMS) enables the timely detection of defects.<br /><br />According to the Indian Railways, this will help the department move from preventive maintenance to predictive maintenance in an attempt to provide ‘world-class’ facilities to passengers. <br /><br /><strong>What makes these coaches so smart?<br /></strong><br />A <keyword id="6752987" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="smart-device">smart device</keyword> is anything that’s connected to other mechanisms or networks through Bluetooth, NFC, <keyword id="47655" type="TECHNOLOGY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Wi-Fi">Wi-Fi</keyword>, Li-Fi, 3G etc and can operate on its own or by interacting with other devices.<br /><br />In the case of the smart coach, there’s a <keyword id="604467" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Central-Processing-Unit">central processing unit</keyword> that connects over a <keyword id="17406" type="TECHNOLOGY" weightage="20" keywordseo="GSM">GSM</keyword> network. The OBCMS is officially called the Passenger Information and Coach Computing Unit, or ‘PICCU’, an industrial grade computer that monitors two aspects, coach maintenance and the passenger interface.<br /><br />Coach maintenance entails relaying information about the train’s health back to PICCU using a vibration-based self-powered harvesting sensor that’s placed on the axle box. The sensor is capable of predicting hard spots and defects on the railway track, the wheels of the train and the bearings.<br /><br />Using that information, the Indian Railways can plan for maintenance accordingly to optimise their resources on a ‘need-basis’ rather being premature or once something already goes wrong. And since the railway tracks are also monitored, the probability of line failures should decrease.<br /><br />The same goes for sensors fitted into the train’s air conditioning (AC) system, that will relay information about the AC condition with alerts for when repairs are required. In addition, the Water Level Indicator (WLI) technology will let PICCU know if the water level drops below sufficient levels.<br /><br />For passengers, there’s an integrated information system that informs them of the train’s location, the expected time of arrival and how fast the train is going. The Indian Railways already has the RailYatri app that tries to do that same thing, but currently lacks the accuracy to pull it off. <br /><br />More importantly, there are at least 6 CCTV cameras on board the coach to implement more stringent security measures. It’s not only about the security of passengers but also monitoring the behaviour and actions of the railway staff on-board.<br /><br />That being said, in case of an emergency, a talkback system has been integrated so that passengers and the train guard can communicate directly. It’s also useful in cases where direct assistance may not be feasible, and instructions can be relayed over the network.<br /><br />And, of course, the coach will have Wi-Fi hotspot capabilities for passengers to check-in and the browse the internet per their convenience.<br /><br />

India’s new smart coaches aim to cut maintenance costs for Indian Railways

<p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container float_right"><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div>Adi Kushnir is another iPhone-obsessed teen who likes to download apps and access the web.<p>But, there's about a 50-50 chance that the Israeli teen will be able to use the cool new apps he downloads.</p><p>Kushnir has been blind since birth, and while Apple has made great strides in accessibility with its VoiceOver screen readers, companies and app developers still forget to bake in accessibility to their code so blind users like Kushnir can use them, he said in a phone call.</p><p>When Kushnir wanted to try <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/interview-with-gett-ceo-shahar-waiser-2015-7">Gett</a>, the ride-hailing app that's becoming popular in international markets, because "it sounded cool," he found that the screen reader he uses couldn't read anything in the app.</p><p>Kushnir&#xa0;reached out to the company - and surprisingly Gett responded.&#xa0;</p><p>"There are people who think blind people need special technology. No, we don't," Kushnir said in an interview with Business Insider. "We can use regular touchscreen phones today and the iPhone is a good example of that. Usually they just don't pay attention to the accessibility APIs from Apple or anyone else and they skip it."&#xa0;</p><p>In April, Gett brought Kushnir in to work with its team and to help revamp the app for both Android and iOS. Now if blind users enable the VoiceOver and TalkBack screen readers, they can use the full app's functionality. Gett also updated their policies to explicitly allow dogs.&#xa0;</p><p>This wasn't Kushnir's first project with a tech company. The high-schooler taught himself how to code in his spare time and doesn't have any plans to study computer science or become a developer after he graduates. He said he just wants to improve the world, which also includes the blind community.</p><p><span>"It's not my mission to make the app accessible for these development companies," Kushnir said. "It's my mission to teach these companies how to make their app accessible from scratch. Not just that I make it accessible and the next version comes out and it breaks."</span></p><p>Uber went though this in January 2015 when&#xa0;<a href="http://www.buzzfeed.com/wilbutler/uber-has-been-effectively-broken-for-blind-iphone-users-sinc#.txrPZPZMLR">an update left blind users unable</a>&#xa0;to use the VoiceOver screen reader. The screen reader technology is used by 60 percent of the blind community on mobile, according to one&#xa0;<a href="http://webaim.org/projects/screenreadersurvey5/">survey by mobility group WebAIM</a>.&#xa0;It took Uber until March to patch the bug.</p><p>While Kushnir is still helping Gett out in his spare time, he's trying to teach other companies the same lesson.&#xa0;He is working with Freedom Scientific to make the Hebrew version of its screen reader for Windows.</p><p>"Basically, accessibility requires awareness, and developers are not aware of accessibility," Kushnir said. "There are ways to make the application accessible with a couple of buttons. Though Flipkart began its first tweet on a slightly edgy note, it ended the talk-back with grace. Flipkart‘s final tweet stopped with a promise to celebrate Amazon’s claim that <em>‘there’s bit of Amazon in every e-commerce company’</em>.<br />
<br /> No sooner had the banter ended, social media users in India went on a sharing and commenting spree about the exchange between two of India’s top online retailers. Consider the Twitter numbers. Flipkart’s tweet portraying the delivery package as a dustbin attracted 767 retweets and 356 favorites. Amazon’s response got 444 retweets and 315 favorites. Flipkart’s final ‘we’ll drink to that’ tweet had 100 RTs and 98 favorites. Numerous scraps on Facebook walls on the exchange too sprang up in no time. What’s more, the comments and opinions expressed on various social portals and sites by netizens stayed firmly in the approving charitable zone. In fact, most people seemed to have enjoyed the banter. Soon, the buzz on social media was picked up by mainstream media with the ToI and <keyword id="23268" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="outlook">Outlook</keyword> magazine running stories on the banter.<br />

So are there lessons to be learnt from this exchange, at a time when social media dominates business and people’s lives? You bet. Here are the 5 key takeaways for business and brands from the Amazon-Flipkart tweet exchange –<br />

1. <em>When social, go cordial</em>: It’s good to remember what is social can also go viral. If and when it does, the content that goes around must be pleasant enough for people to form favorable impressions. Both Amazon and Flipkart using wit and grace in that order ensured they stayed firmly in the ‘likable’ zone.<br />
<br />
2. <em>When social, keep it real:</em> Business and brands must learn to cultivate a human face. It’s what makes them seem real to people, and also endears them to the public at large. One way to appear real is to talk (read, tweet) like a real person. If you look closely at the tweet exchanges between Reddit, Amazon, and Flipkart it seems like its people doing a back and forth with each other. The tweets don’t come across as <keyword id="6354839" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="marketing">marketing</keyword> messages; instead they show up as ‘real talk’ among ‘real people’, aka business firms.<br />

3. <em>When in sight, time it right:</em> On a web-enabled social platform, timing’s everything. You’ve heard how timing’s important in comedy; ditto on social media. When the gauntlet was thrown by Flipkart, Amazon reacted ‘real-time’, and that made all the difference. Waiting would have killed the story, and also the interest levels of netizens and social media users.<br />

4. <em>If it’s a loss of face, withdraw with grace:</em> Flipkart’s reference to a dustbin in its tweet was smartly countered by Amazon with its <em>‘there’s a bit of Amazon’</em> retort. How did Flipkart in turn react? It acknowledged the witty riposte and closed with a promise to <em>‘drink to that’</em>. Now that’s both classy and graceful. The result was that nobody came out scarred. Though Amazon scored, Flipkart joined in with best wishes, and netizens lapped up the gesture.<br />
<br />
5. <em>Social fun needn’t be zero-sum:</em> Too many times businesses have believed rivalry to be a zero sum game. If one has to win, the other has to lose. Of course, Flipkart and Amazon are keen rivals, yet they’ve shown with this banter that it’s not always about winning at another’s expense. That it’s also about engaging a common audience that both firms target. In doing so, everyone emerges a winner. The audience is engaged, the category grows, and both firms benefit.<br />
There’s much business and brands can learn from what will now become part of e-commerce legend in India. Why only business, there’s much we can learn too.<br />
