The national capital has reported an "isolated" case of Japanese Encephalitis, official sources said on Thursday. All public health measures have been instituted as per the National Centre for Vector Borne Diseases Control (NCVBDC) guidelines, the sources said, adding there was no cause for concern. Referring to an order issued by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi on Wednesday, the sources said that the 72-year-old man from west Delhi was admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences on November 3 following chest pain. The patient was diabetic, had coronary artery disease, bilateral lower limb weakness and bowel and bladder incontinence, the source said. After the patient's blood sample was collected on November 6, he tested positive for Japanese Encephalitis. He was discharged on November 15, the sources said. According to the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme data, in 2024, 1,548 Japanese Encephalitis cases were reported from 24 states and Union Territories, with 925 cases from Assam alone. The central government guidelines, two doses of the vaccine have been a part of the Universal Immunisation Programme since 2013. Adult <keyword id="24203625" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Japanese-Encephalitis-vaccine" source="keywords">Japanese Encephalitis vaccine</keyword> has been introduced in high-burden states, sources said. "No outbreak of Japanese Encephalitis has been reported in Delhi in the past although occasional isolated cases have been reported from tertiary hospitals like AIIMS, Ram Manohar Lohia and Safdarjung among others - mostly from neighbouring states," a source said. While all public health measures have been instituted according to the NCVBDC guidelines, there is no cause for concern due to this isolated case of Japanese Encephalitis, the source said. The Japanese Encephalitis virus is normally carried by waterfowl and amplified in pigs from where it is accidentally transmitted to humans through the bite of infected culex mosquitoes. The infection may result in febrile illness and in a small proportion of cases cause neurological illness and may result in death, he said. There is no specific treatment for Japanese Encephalitis and there is no human-to-human transmission of the virus, the source said. Delhi reports 'isolated' case of Japanese Encephalitis

Some experts have hypothesized that the recent popularity of meat-heavy diets like keto and paleo is <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/colon-cancer-young-people-diagnosis-causes-risk-factors-2019-7">partly to blame for rising cancer rates</a>.Obesity has also been linked to an increased risk of bowel cancer, as have habits like smoking and excessive alcohol use.<h2>Race and colon cancer</h2>Studies have found that Black people may be disproportionately affected by colon cancer in the US, in part because of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/the-racial-gap-in-coronavirus-deaths-is-driven-by-racism-2020-6">racism and barriers to getting medical treatment</a>.Studies have also found that stress stemming from racism and the hurdles that Black people have historically faced in the US also have tangible effects on health.<h2>Symptoms like rectal bleeding, unexplained weight loss, and constipation or diarrhea can be warning signs of colon cancer</h2>Many symptoms of colon cancer can also indicate more mundane illnesses.For instance, changes in bowel movements like constipation or diarrhea could indicate colon cancer — but also a plethora of other ailments, including infections, irritable bowel syndrome, or inflammatory bowel disease.Abdominal pain, unexplained weight loss, and fatigue can also be symptoms of colon cancer.A major warning sign of colon cancer is rectal bleeding or bloody stool. While this could also be hemorrhoids, you should consult a medical professional if you experience this.Another unique indicator of colon cancer is the feeling of being unable to empty the bowels, according to the Mayo Clinic.<h2>Colon-cancer treatment</h2>Treatment varies depending on how far the cancer has advanced and where in the bowel it is, but it can include surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and immunotherapy.The first-line treatment for colon cancer at stages zero or one is surgery to remove the affected part of the colon.However, past stage two, when the cancer is still localized but is growing, chemotherapy is considered, particularly if it has perforated the colon and/or appears at risk of resurging after surgery.Stage three, when the cancer has spread to nearby lymph nodes but not to other organs, requires surgery and chemotherapy, with additional radiation if the cancer is advancing quickly.At stage four, when the cancer has spread to other organs, patients can undergo a combination of chemotherapy and surgery, radiation therapy, and other targeted treatments to try to treat the cancer or to alleviate the pain associated with it.<h2>Everyone 45 and older should get screened regularly for bowel cancer, and so should younger people at a higher risk</h2>Bowel cancer is diagnosed with a variety of tests, including stool tests, colonoscopies, X-rays, or CT scans of the bowels. A regular physical exam can help identify any abnormalities and detect the cancer sooner.The American Cancer Society recommends that all adults over 45 be tested regularly for colon cancer, even if they have no symptoms. People older than 50 are still at a greater risk of developing colon cancer overall. Patients may feel run down, with a cough and a slight fever, but are often still well enough to continue their daily life."It can be a little incognito, it can sneak up on people," Dr. Elizabeth Schlaudecker, medical director of infectious diseases at Cincinnati Children's Hospital, told Business Insider.The illness can be tough to identify and expensive to test for, and it can linger for several weeks, making it a frustrating sickness for families. Plus, treatment isn't necessarily one-size-fits-all.Here's what to know about how to spot it and treat it.<h2 id="c3f3c068-3915-4781-ba32-003daf8df1ce">Look out for a persistent cough, fever, and fatigue</h2><div type="image" title="kids going to school" height="1147" width="1600" msid="114857745" hostid="261" sizebytes="163892"></div>The tell-tale signs of walking pneumonia are not obvious. Illnesses caused by mycoplasma pneumoniae tend to be milder than infections caused by the more common bacterial pneumonia, streptococcus pneumoniae.ER doctor Russell Migita at Seattle Children's Hospital says it's hard to know exactly how many of the patients he sees have walking pneumonia cases, versus strep pneumonia or viral pneumonia. Often, doctors use a stethoscope to listen for a characteristic, localized "crackling" noise in patients with walking pneumonia, but not every patient has that.Testing for the bacteria that causes walking pneumonia is also expensive, relatively new, imperfect, and may not be covered by insurance, Migita said, so it's hard for experts to know exactly how bad this fall outbreak really is, compared to years past.The latest CDC data on the tests that are being done suggests more toddlers are getting walking pneumonia this year than was thought to be typical; the illness used to be viewed as more common in school-age kids. There have also been outbreaks among young adults living in dorms, where the bacteria has plenty of time to incubate and spread.Schlaudecker is part of the CDC surveillance network testing patients for mycoplasma bacteria across the country. She said test results indicate a surge in infections peaked in late August and early September as kids headed back to school, and started trading germs again. "Hopefully it's starting to slowly decline, but we're definitely still seeing it," she said.People who've recently <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.yalemedicine.org/news/walking-pneumonia">had the flu</a> are also at increased risk for developing walking pneumonia.<h2 id="bd4d6715-82de-4c8c-8927-c9f2b650d92c">Amoxicillin may not be your doctor's first choice</h2><div type="image" title="amoxicillin tablets" height="2167" width="3250" msid="114857752" hostid="261" sizebytes="441756"></div><a target="_blank" href="https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s12519-024-00831-0">New studies</a> suggest there isn't always a clear winner when it comes to the best treatment for walking pneumonia.Even though macrolide antibiotics, like azithromycin, are the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/73/wr/mm7307a3.htm">recommended treatment</a> and should perform better than penicillin-based antibiotics like amoxicillin on this bacteria, there isn't great data on which medication actually helps shorten and improve the course of this infectious disease best.In practice, Migita says doctors often use a mix of their own experience, local disease trends, and a particular patient's history and preferences to get a sense of what might work. In some cases, patients will get better without medication, but for bacterial pneumonia, an antibiotic can help. Doctors assess the situation on a case-by-case basis, similar to how they would treat an ear infection."Empiric treatment is what we do in most cases for most pediatric infections because it's hard to say for sure what's causing it," he said. "If you're not getting better on your first antibiotic in two to three days, then get seen again."Doctors say even though walking pneumonia doesn't tend to be as severe as other seasonal illnesses kids pass around like the flu, COVID, or RSV, it can still be a burdensome one for families, because it tends to last for a long time. In rare cases, walking pneumonia can prompt brain swelling, kidney issues, and difficulty breathing, and people with lung issues, and weakened immune systems may be especially at risk of hospitalization with walking pneumonia.Earlier this year, Schlaudecker's 15-year-old daughter had a persistent cough that continued for a week after what her mom thought was just a cold. They went to see her pediatrician, who listened to the girl's chest with a stethoscope.Without any testing, the daughter was diagnosed with walking pneumonia, and prescribed a Z-Pak (azithromycin). Within 24 hours of beginning her medication, the teenager felt great again."She was like, 'Wow, this is so cool that we figured out what it was and got on the right drug," Schlaudecker said. "It was a good medical success story."

Walking pneumonia is spreading. Doctors share the tell-tale symptoms to look for, and varied ways to treat it.

A new study analysing long-Covid among children and teenagers in the US has found that <keyword id="44308" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="symptoms" source="Orion">symptoms</keyword> differed between the two groups. While children faced more brain and stomach-related problems, teenagers experienced fatigue, <keyword id="950054" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Physical-Pain" source="Orion">physical pain</keyword>, and loss of smell and taste. Moreover, long-Covid symptoms common in both adults and teens were more than those between teens and children, highlighting the importance of age groups-based COVID-19 research, according to the team of over 140 researchers that conducted the study. Published in The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), the study is part of the US National Institutes of Health (NIH)'s 'RECOVER' Initiative, aimed at understanding and preventing long-Covid, which refers to a set of persisting symptoms months after having COVID-19 <keyword id="6393040" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="infection" source="Orion">infection</keyword>. The researchers studied more than 5,300 children and adolescents, of whom about 3,860 -- - 751 children and 3109 adolescents -- had a history of the viral infection. Caregivers were surveyed for about 75 symptoms that occurred at least 90 days after an initial COVID-19 infection and lasted for at least a month. They were also enquired about their child's overall health and quality of life. Among children aged 6-11 years, the most common long <keyword id="8764262" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Covid" source="Orion">COVID</keyword> symptoms were headache (57%), followed by trouble with memory/focusing, trouble sleeping (44 %) and stomach pain (43 %), the study found. Among the adolescents, about 80% had tiredness or low energy during the day, while physical pain in the body, muscles and joints affected 60% of them. Headaches persisted in 55% of the teens, while 47% of them continued to have trouble remembering or concentrating. While identifying groups of symptoms distinct to each age group, the researchers developed a long-Covid research index that indicates the likelihood of the condition in a child or a teenager. The index, separate for both age groups, included 18 prolonged symptoms that were more common in children and 17 common among teenagers. "The symptoms that make up the research index are not the only symptoms a child may have and they're not the most severe. But they are most predictive in determining who may have long COVID," said lead author of the study Rachel Gross, an associate professor in the departments of <keyword id="492850" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Paediatrics" source="Orion">Paediatrics</keyword> and Population Health at New York University. In the study group, 45% of the infected (338) and 33% of the uninfected children, along with 39% of the infected and 27 % of the uninfected adolescents reported having at least one prolonged symptom, the authors of the study said. Twenty-six symptoms among infected school-age children and 18 symptoms in infected adolescents persisted in at least 5% of the participants, they said.

On the worst nights, I'd go back to bed after my kids went to day care, or I'd sleep through their morning routine as my husband took care of them and got them out the door. There were plenty of days when I just didn't get out of bed.During my menstrual cycle, I'd have a few good days where I saw a glimmer of my old self. On those days, I'd feel motivated and excited, and I could accomplish what my former self was capable of. But most days, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/health/brain-fog">brain fog and overwhelm</a> took over.My brain was scrambled as it jumped from task to task. Things that used to be easy now felt like I was looking at a puzzle. I did a lot of research and decided to proceed with the treatment.<h2 id="4123c48c-8607-413d-a7a8-389b0eb049b1">It felt like I was coming out of a heavy fog</h2>With the BHRT, I began to experience emotions again. I felt excited, happy, alive, energized, motivated, passionate, sad, angry — all of the feelings that had been replaced by a constant feeling of nothingness from perimenopause.After a month of treatment, I was <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tips-for-getting-better-sleep-2023-8">able to fall asleep</a> at a decent hour and could sleep through the entire night. I no longer woke up with night sweats or racing thoughts.Looking back on the year and a half prior, I couldn't believe how bad my emotions and executive functions had gotten. It was as if I'd been a walking zombie who couldn't see or think clearly.I've been on BHRT for nine months now, and the relief I feel makes me want to burst out in happy tears. I'm not sure how long people normally stay on BHRT, but after at least 10 years I plan to get a yearly evaluation of the risks and benefits.<h2 id="ee699526-533a-4d77-b713-9388ed5213e4">Women's health education isn't prioritized</h2>While I'm so happy to feel like myself again, I've experienced a lot of anger as I learn more about the lack of education and empathy surrounding <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/supplements-dietitian-women-health-specialist-regimen-2023-12">women's health</a>.I'm angry that it took me a year and a half to find answers even though I kept advocating for myself to multiple doctors. I'm angry that women's health education isn't prioritized during medical school, in the medical community, or in clinical studies.Most of all, I'm angry that perimenopause robbed me of precious time with my husband and kids that I'll never get back. I felt so much shame for being a zombie mom during those years, but now I understand that it wasn't something I could control or "mindset coach" my way out of.I've connected with and learned from other women who have had similar experiences. I hope that <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/carli-lloyd-advocating-more-options-women-healthcare-2022-3">women stop masking</a> or making excuses for their symptoms. Rather, we must listen to our intuitions when we don't feel like ourselves. She rounds out her nutritional needs with her staple energy balls made from almond butter and vegan chocolate chips. Later in the day, she has hearty vegan dinners like curry, tacos, or Thai food.Hintenberger said eating a plant-based diet has helped her recover more quickly from exercise, and continue gaining strength so she can stay at the top of her sport."I'm never one to push veganism, but I genuinely want to be an example of health as we age," she said.

However, even in my 40s, I wasn't exactly sure how to define "normal."I was convinced I was <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/perimenopause-felt-like-going-through-puberty-again-2024-10">going through perimenopause</a>, but my hormonal levels said otherwise. Of course, we couldn't let the boys know we were learning about menstruation. I'd been having my period for decades, and I knew this wasn't "normal" bleeding. Maybe it was perimenopause, but I was ready to push for some answers. On a particularly terrible morning, I called the nurse line at my local clinic, answered a lengthy list of personal questions, and was scheduled to see my primary care provider. More bloodwork and a pap smear later, my doctor ordered an ultrasound.And then we had an answer (two of them, actually): a uterine fibroid and an endometrial polyp. Reading a list of symptoms — bleeding between periods, pelvic pain, longer periods — felt like reading a page of my journal for the last few years.I've since learned that many women deal with fibroids throughout their lives — up to<a target="_blank" href="https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/health/conditions-and-diseases/uterine-fibroids#:~:text=An%20estimated%2020%25%20to%2050,so%20they%20are%20often%20undiagnosed."> 77% of women in their childbearing years</a> — many of whom I knew in my real life. We were just too busy talking about perimenopause to discuss these other issues.I followed up with a specialist who talked through my options, and after years of suffering, I was ready for a solution.On the same day as my 45th birthday, I had a dilation and curettage procedure to biopsy my endometrium and remove the polyp.For a woman who has never been pregnant or birthed a baby, walking into the procedure room was jarring. However, the medical assistant and doctor were reassuring and calming throughout the process. I practiced some deep breathing during the painful parts and said a short prayer that the biopsy was benign.Later that night, I celebrated my birthday with a family dinner, and my birthday celebration stretched into a week later when I received the welcome news from my biopsy — benign.Other perimenopausal symptoms might be approaching, but I'm no longer afraid to talk about them or seek answers when something feels off. After living in this body for 45 years, it's time I start trusting it.

I imagine this had to have been one of the conversations occurring on the other side of the door as Brian and I waited for the results of my final scan. The two of us sat in silence, unaware that soon our new vows would be tested while behind-the-scenes calls were being made, referrals placed, and handoffs prepared.We'd arrived at 11 p.m., and as the clock rounded past 4 a.m., Brian and I were both beginning to doze off. We were awakened by a new doctor who appeared in the doorway. As he pulled up a stool next to the bed, he introduced himself as Dr. Morgan. I took notice of the beaded bracelet he wore on his wrist as he rested his hand gently on the bed, took a deep breath, and softened his gaze to break the news. We've found a large mass on your right kidney and a couple of lesions in your liver. For years, I had kept asking doctors if we could rule out cancer in my pursuit of vague symptoms. I'd been terrified of this moment, and the catastrophic worrying had led me to imagine the delivery of this news probably 100 times before. But now that it was actually happening, it was nothing like I'd imagined it would be. Despite my racing heart, why did I feel so calm? Brian squeezed my hand as I looked over my shoulder and watched him break into tears. That felt like the appropriate response here.I shifted my gaze back to Dr. Morgan and asked in a calm and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-identify-and-help-stop-tone-policing-in-workplace-2020-8">steady tone</a> that surprised even me, "Is it terminal?"I felt the emotion in his response. I wasn't surprised to hear something was wrong because I had known something was wrong; I just hadn't gotten anyone to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-get-people-to-take-you-seriously-2018-5">take me seriously</a>. But now we had undeniable proof, and for the first time, I was sitting across from a doctor who believed me and seemed to care genuinely. I knew this wouldn't be an easy road, but at least I no longer had to travel it alone.As I thought about the appointments and memories that had led to this moment, the emotions finally caught up with me as I remembered the several doctors who had told me I was <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-reduce-cancer-risk-lower-chances-catch-early-signs-2024-2">too young for cancer</a>. The words looped in my head as I tried to make sense of it all before they found their way out without context."But other doctors told me I was too young for cancer." My voice broke, and the grief crashed over me as I finally began processing the news. My <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tim-spector-scientist-stroke-lower-blood-pressure-without-cutting-salt-2024-10">blood pressure</a>, now climbing, set off more alarms as I looked at the monitor, concerned. Dr. Morgan reminded me I had just received some pretty distressing news. "That's a normal response; don't worry about those for now," he reassured me.I focused again on the words circling in my head. "How could this happen? They told me I was too young for cancer," I said aloud again as my voice trailed off in disbelief. Dr. Morgan explained that we don't always know what causes cancer, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/health/sex-relationships/how-to-apologize">empathetically apologized</a> for the road that had led me here, and shared that this was personal for him, as his mom had battled with cancer as well. I wondered if this would be how people were going to talk about me one day, too.As he stood up to leave, I thanked him for answering my questions and being patient with me. I knew he likely had a busy ER to attend to. But he had brought a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/kava-beverages-mitra-9-leilo-taste-test-2023-7">calming presence</a> into the room and never once made us feel rushed, which I truly appreciated. I was grateful that it was he who delivered the news to me that day.<h2 id="5b7fe2a5-1969-4180-abee-25b099ec5562">I worried my diagnosis would change the life I envisioned with my husband</h2>After he left the room, I turned to Brian and instantly apologized as we both began crying uncontrollably. I felt guilty like I was robbing him of his future and the life we had planned together. He told me to stop; he wasn't going anywhere, and neither was I. I squeezed his hand as the door opened, and the nurse started to walk back in before being stopped and pulled back by the doctor to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/relationship-tip-need-space-while-living-together-decompress-2024-5">give us some space</a>.A <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/social-worker-quit-to-become-life-coach-positive-psychology-business-2024-8">social worker</a> would be in soon to chat and help us process the news. My mind raced while we waited for her to arrive, and I asked Brian to look up the survival rates for kidney cancer. He pulled up a search on his phone and stared silently at it for a while. I wasn't sure I wanted to find out what those rates were, but I also knew there was no way I was getting through the night without knowing. "It sounds like stage one is often cured with surgery, a survival rate of 93 percent." Wow, OK, those sounded like good odds, but what did stage one mean? Time to Google the definition.Stage one: The cancer has not spread, is only in the kidney, and isn't larger than seven centimeters.Hmm, OK, the doctor had mentioned the tumor on my kidney was 12 centimeters and that it had spread to my liver, so that disqualified me from that. What was the next stage?Stage two: The cancer has not spread and is only in the kidney but is larger than seven centimeters.Since mine was 12 centimeters, it seemed like it could fit in that category if those spots in my liver weren't actually tumors. What were the survival rates for that?The next stat was for regional spread, which the article described as the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/new-mom-survived-cancer-couldnt-return-job-have-more-kids-2024-10">cancer spreading</a> from outside the kidney to nearby structures or lymph nodes. It didn't say anything about stage two, but from the description, we wondered if nearby structures could mean the liver. Neither of us was medically trained; it felt like we needed a definition for these definitions. Brian read off the survival rate for regional spread: 71%. Still not great, but not terrible. I could be part of that 71%. Not knowing if I fell into this category or not, he continued.Stage three: The cancer may be any size, but it has spread to nearby sites outside the kidney.This sounded a bit more like it matched the regional description. So maybe I was <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/man-chest-pain-ignore-pancreatic-cancer-treatment-symptoms-2023-7">stage three</a>? We were still thoroughly confused by what "nearby" meant, so I asked what the final stage was.Stage four: The cancer has spread away from the kidney to distant sites or organs. The most common locations kidney cancer spreads or metastasizes to include distant lymph nodes, the lungs, bones, liver, and brain.We had our answer. The liver was considered a distant organ. My stomach sank. Could I really be stage four? Afraid of the answer, I asked what the odds were for stage four. In a soft, defeated tone, Brian replied, "8%."*My <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/dogs-cry-if-theyre-happy-to-see-you-research-says-2022-8">eyes welled up with tears</a>. Crushed, I muttered out a response. "That's not zero . . ." I looked down toward my feet at the end of the bed and repeated softly back to myself, "8% isn't zero." I looked back over at Brain, tears pouring down my face. "I'm going to beat this, I'm going to fight; 8% isn't zero. It's not impossible. Even if there's only a 1% chance I can make it, I can beat it," I insisted.His tears matched mine as they fell from his eyes, trailing into his beard. Between 2011 and 2019, rates increased by 1.9% a year in people younger than 55, according to existing research by The American Cancer Society. Although cases rose in all age groups under 50 during this period, the biggest uptick was seen in people in their<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/colon-cancer-cases-doubled-young-people-2024-5"> late 20s to early 30s</a>. The rate of colon cancer for people in that age group increased by about 70% from 1999 to 2020, according to Centers for Disease Control data.But symptoms, such as weight loss and appetite changes, can be indicative of many illnesses, the authors of the news study published May 24 in <a target="_blank" href="https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamanetworkopen/fullarticle/2819248">JAMA Network</a> wrote. This means they're often missed, leading to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ignored-colon-cancer-symptoms-diagnosis-abdominal-pain-bloody-stool-2024-3">late-stage diagnosis</a>, which is harder to treatTo combat this, researchers used data from 81 studies across six countries involving nearly 25 million people under 50 with <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/colon-cancer-red-flag-signs-symptoms-2023-5">early-onset colon cancer</a>. Their aim was to determine which symptoms were most common, which signs put patients most at risk of colon cancer, and how long it took patients to get a colon cancer diagnosis.Overall, 17 signs of early-onset colon cancer were identified.Almost half of the participants had rectal bleeding, which was linked to a five-fold increase in early onset colon cancer risk, making it the largest risk factor.Around 40% had <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/3-women-whose-abdominal-pain-and-other-symptoms-were-dismissed-2023-3">abdominal pain</a>, the second most common symptom.Changes in bowel movements was the third, and included constipation, diarrhea, alternating bowel habits, or alternating diarrhea or constipation. The fourth most common symptom in the US was diarrhea, but in studies from non-US countries, it was loss of appetite, the study said.Patients tended to receive a cancer diagnosis between four to six months after their symptoms first appeared. It's not clear whether decreasing the time to diagnosis would improve outcomes, but the risk of cancer becoming advanced increases over time, the study said.The authors suggested that given the prevalence of rectal bleeding and abdominal pain in <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/get-colonoscopy-colon-cancer-symptoms-colorectal-oncologist-2024-4">colon cancer patients</a>, doctors should always consider it before dismissing a patient with these symptoms.There were significant differences in the studies used, which posed some challenges for analysis, the authors said. They were unable to compare colon cancer risk against other potential causes of symptoms, which might have provided a better picture of the relative risk, they said.Experts still don't know what's behind the rise in colon cancer, but <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ultra-processed-foods-health-problems-study-2024-2">ultra-processed foods</a>, environmental contaminants, and obesity, among other things, are being considered possible causes.Dr. Michael Shusterman, a gastrointestinal medical oncologist at NYU Langone's Perlmutter Cancer Center on Long Island, previously told Business Insider that to reduce the risk of developing colon cancer, he recommends patients quit smoking; cut down on alcohol; do some moderate-intensity exercise; eat more fiber and less red meat; and avoid ultra-processed foods as much as possible.
