But Reilly, a retired police officer and mother of four, decided to make a profile, advertising <a href="https://www.insider.com/swimply-review-rented-swimming-pool-backyard-2021-8">her pool in Long Island, New York</a>."Like many other hosts, we don't use our pool as often as we'd like," Reilly said. She said the money helped her pay off some of her family's bills, but she put most of it back into the backyard by purchasing a pergola and uplighting.<h2>As Swimply continues to expand, Reilly is seeing more competition and less income this year</h2>Although Reilly is still getting many bookings this summer, she's noticing there aren't as many as last year. She thinks it's because Swimply is more popular in 2021, and there are now more listings in Long Island. Swimply now offers Melissa and all hosts insurance in case someone damages her property, and now, there is a support hotline hosts can use if they have problematic guests.<h2>Reilly has had some problems with a few guests</h2>Since Reilly cleans the backyard and deals with the upkeep herself, she said she does get tired of cleaning up after people who don't follow the rules. She said some people leave garbage behind even though her listing says to throw everything out. "It makes me feel so nice that I let somebody have that pleasure for the day."

The essay has been edited for length and clarity.My wife and I live in San Diego. We've been in the same house for 12 years. In 2022, we started building a pickleball court due to a combination of factors.First, we were both retiring. I was a special education teacher and school administrator for 32 years. The way my retirement was set up, I got this specific lump sum the year I retired. I decided this was a dream project for that money.After the COVID-19 lockdown, my wife and I also knew we didn't want to go to gyms anymore. So, I just kind of went into the house and went about my day.One issue is using the bathroom because folks are here for an hour or two.The first time, I was surprised because I didn't expect people to have to use the bathroom while playing. They're having fun and enjoying themselves, and it's kind of satisfying.This has turned out better than I could have hoped. I have neighborhood games we play here; it's building a micro-community.I have noticed rentals are kind of seasonal. We get a lot of action around the holidays, around October through Christmas. Families are getting together and looking for something to do. A guy tried to rent a court in Coronado, which is a bit more romantic, but they were all booked.I was in on the plan. He shot me a message, "Hey, I want to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mistakes-avoid-planning-engagement-proposal-fiance-wedding-2023-2">propose to my girlfriend</a>. I think your courts are really cool." We stayed in close contact that day because it was raining, and we weren't sure if he could pull it off. We both played weatherman for the day. At one point, he said, "Well, it's 50% chance of rain." And I kept telling him, "Just come, don't worry about it. Somehow, it stayed in the ball, and she opened it up while he dropped down to one knee. Its cofounder Bunim Laskin <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/pool-summer-airbnb-11626380408?campaign_id=4&amp;emc=edit_dk_20210721&amp;instance_id=35835&amp;nl=dealbook&amp;regi_id=136049270&amp;segment_id=63986&amp;te=1&amp;user_id=b10149fb26eb79ab060fa3a97de5bf5b49fb26eb79ab060fa3a97de5bf5b" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">told The Wall Street Journal</a> that hourly rentals on the app have surged to over 120,000 bookings over the past year, as the pandemic shuttered many public pools.The app is home to about 13,000 pool owners across the country from Los Angeles to New York City. Prices on the app average between $35 to $50 per hour depending on the user's location.One pool owner told the Journal that he expects to make over $110,000 this year from renting out his luxury pool. The app's cofounder Asher Weinberger told the publication that pool owners earn about $5,000 to $10,000 per month on average, while the company takes a 15% cut from hosts and imposes a 10% fee on guests. <h2>How to find a pool near you</h2>In order to use Swimply's services, a customer can sign up on the app or website swimply.com using their email, Facebook or email logins. Users must be over 21 year-old to rent a pool space.<div type="image" title="Swimply" height="2302" width="1168" msid="84620916" hostid="261"></div>Then a prospective pool hopper can enter their location to find a nearby pool through the map view or list view on the site.Each location listing operates similarly to an Airbnb listing and includes pictures of the property, lists of amenities like a barbecue grill or sound system, as well as the host's rules. Weinberger told the Journal many hosts choose to stay at home during the rentals to alleviate potential risks associated with or with damage to the property, especially for larger events like pool parties. The startup also offers a host liability insurance that covers as much as $1 million, as well as a property-damage-protection policy.<div type="image" title="Swimply map" height="2303" width="1168" msid="84620919" hostid="261"></div>Some locations even include additional amenities that can be tacked on to the purchase, including alcohol and snacks. Many pool owners rent the space out to several different groups in a day. Customers can also rent locations with pools by the day through Airbnb and <keyword id="2762977" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="vrbo">Vrbo</keyword>.Swimply's popularity comes at the same time that <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/pool-owner-chlorine-shortage-saltwater-2021-4">costs for pool chemicals like chlorine are surging</a> after a fire last year at chlorine manufacturer BioLabs spurred a national shortage of the product.Peerspace, Airbnb, and Vrbo didn't immediately respond to a request for comment; Swimply referred their comments to those given for the Journal article.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>The <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/people-who-seemingly-predicted-the-coronavirus-pandemic-2020-3">pandemic</a> has been relatively good to parts of the <keyword id="1811226" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Sharing-Economy">sharing economy</keyword>.</li><li>While traditional share services like Uber and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/19-top-airbnb-execs-leading-business-pandemic-recovery-2020-6">Airbnb</a> have been hit hard, other rent-by-the-hour services are seeing a boom.</li><li>People are renting apartments by the hour for a spousal break, hotels by the day to get work done free of distractions, and pools to beat the heat.</li></ul>As the pandemic wears on and people look to escape their homes as safely as possible, a number of new services are waiting with open arms.Consider Globe, an app born in 2019 that offers short-term apartment and home <keyword id="6520169" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="rentals">rentals</keyword> by the hour. It nearly went under when the pandemic first hit and hosts began to work from home, <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/travel/hotels/2020/07/01/globe-escape-your-coronavirus-quarantine/3284318001/">reported USA Today's David Oliver</a>. But demand quickly changed: From mid-March to mid-May, Globe CEO Manny Bamfo told Oliver, the company grew by 100%, adding 30,000 users.Globe's hourly rates range from $25 to $100 depending on location. People are turning to Globe for several reasons, Bamfo said, from essential workers looking for breaks during the workday to non-essential workers looking for a reprieve from those they're stuck at home with.<a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2020/05/18/style/rooms-by-the-hour.html">Brittney Gwynn told The New York Times</a> she used Globe to book a vacant apartment in Brooklyn for two hours at a $50 hourly rate to take a break from the boyfriend she'd been quarantining with. "We're getting on each other's nerves," she said.<h2>Parents need both a break from their kids and activities to do with them</h2>Hotels, too, are catering to the same demographic who just need some peace and quiet.Renting a motel by the hour isn't a new concept, but it's become more socially acceptable as mainstream hotels offer day rates to cooped-up individuals.Many hotels, from Marriott to Sheraton, have created daily office packages for parents looking for a calm, childless workspace, <a href="https://nypost.com/2020/05/25/empty-hotel-rooms-offer-quiet-space-to-working-parents/">reported Lisa Fickenscher for The New York Post</a>. What are parents supposed to do with their kids?" <h2>The pandemic is opening up new doors for the sharing economy</h2>But this doesn't mean the entire sharing economy is thriving.By May, both Airbnb and Uber, two sharing economy giants, had each laid off about a quarter of their workforces. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/airbnbs-layoffs-will-likely-save-company-less-than-255-million-2020-5">Airbnb</a> cut 1,900 jobs, while <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/uber-confirms-layoffs-3000-more-job-cuts-offices-close-2020-5">Uber</a> laid off 6,700 employees.
