Swiggy report says GenZ contributes to 40% of food consumption; highlights recent trend of binge-eating

Because of their small and relatively collapsible airways, young children with <keyword id="1609796" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="omicron" source="Orion">Omicron</keyword> are more vulnerable to upper airway infection such as croup, which if severe can lead to cardiac arrest, finds a study. Croup is a type of respiratory illness, known medically as laryngotracheitis, in babies and young children. It is characterised by barking cough, and noisy breathing. In severe cases, it can dangerously constrict breathing. A team of researchers from Universities of Colorado and Northwestern in the US, examined 18,849 children hospitalised with SARS-CoV-2. Their results published in the JAMA Pediatrics showed that upper airways infection increased during the Omicron surge. More than one-fifth of children hospitalised with SARS-CoV-2 and upper airways infection in the US developed severe disease. About 384 had upper airway infection. Severe disease, defined as requiring invasive ventilation, vasopressors, or extracorporeal membrane oxygenation or death, occurred in 81 children. The study also found that children with upper airways infection during the Omicron period were more likely to be younger and less likely to receive dexamethasone or develop severe disease compared with those in the pre-Omicron period. "Children with severe upper airway infection are at risk of cardiac arrest from rapid-onset upper airway obstruction. They may require therapies typically provided in intensive care units, including frequent administration of nebulized racemic epinephrine, helium-oxygen mixtures, and intubation," said the researchers including <keyword id="13642831" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="blake-martin" source="Orion">Blake Martin</keyword>, from Department of Pediatrics at University of Colorado's School of Medicine. "While the rate of SARS-CoV-2 paediatric upper airway infection is not overwhelmingly high, understanding this new clinical phenotype and the potential for acute upper airway obstruction may help guide therapeutic decision-making," they added. After being detected from African countries in November last year, Omicron soon gained presence worldwide and became the dominant strain, replacing <keyword id="6383835" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="delta" source="Orion">Delta</keyword>. It became dominant in the US the week ending December 25. "Omicron is known to cause lower severity disease than the Delta (B.1.617.2) variant. This may be because Omicron replicates less efficiently in lung parenchyma and more efficiently in the conducting airways," the researchers said. The team explained that SARS-CoV-2 can cause severe paediatric disease, including acute Covid-19 and multisystem inflammatory syndrome. According to a study, regular physical activity might aid adolescents with behavioural issues and their mental health. Researchers revealed that regular moderate to intense physical activity between the ages of 11 and 13 was associated with better mental health. Physical activity was also associated with reduced hyperactivity and behavioural problems, such as loss of temper, fighting with other children, lying, and stealing, in young people. Researchers from the <keyword id="2138137" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="universities-of-edinburgh" source="Orion">Universities of Edinburgh</keyword>, Strathclyde, Bristol, and Georgia in the United States explored data from the Children of the 90s study (also known as the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children; ALSPAC). They looked at the levels of physical activity of 4755 11-year-olds which was measured using devices. The devices recorded levels of moderate physical activity - typically defined as brisk walking or cycling - as well as vigorous activity which boosts heart rate and breathing, such as aerobic dancing, jogging or swimming. The young people and their parents reported on their levels of depressive symptoms from age 11 and at age 13 years. Participants' parents and teachers were also quizzed about the young people's general behaviour and emotional difficulties. In analysing the impact of moderate to vigorous exercise on the young people's mental health and behaviour, the team also considered factors such as age, sex and socio-economic status. They found that higher levels of moderate or intense physical activity had a small but detectable association with decreases in depressive symptoms and emotional difficulties. Regular exercise had a small but detectable association with reduced behavioural problems, even after controlling for other possible influences, the study found. The findings suggest regular moderate and intense physical activity may have a small protective influence on mental health in early adolescence, researchers say. Dr <keyword id="2126128" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="josie-booth" source="Orion">Josie Booth</keyword>, of the University of Edinburgh's Moray House School of Education and Sport, said: "This study adds to the increasing evidence base about how important physical activity is for all aspects of young people's development - it can help them feel better, and do better at school. The research was commissioned between April 2, 2021 to May 7, 2021, during the first leg of IPL 2021. Fifty-nine percent of the participants who wore pyjamas during the day at least one day a week, they admitted their mental health declined while working from home, vs 26% who did not wear pyjamas while working from home. "While we cannot determine whether wearing pyjamas was the cause or consequence of mental health deterioration, appreciation of the effect of clothing on cognition and mental health is growing," the study authors were quoted as saying in zdnet.com. The study, published in the Medical Journal of Australia, also examined the impact children had on people while they worked from home. It found that 63% working from home with a toddler reported reduced overall productivity. Similarly, people who had primary school children at home while they worked agreed that their productivity was hindered. The <keyword id="160935" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="UK-Home-Office">UK Home Office</keyword> on Thursday formally opened its new post-study work visa for international students, which would offer overseas graduates from <keyword id="3658" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword> and other destinations the option to apply for the right to stay on for job experience at the end of their university courses. The <keyword id="23976" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="graduate">Graduate</keyword> route visa, announced last year by UK Home Secretary <keyword id="132666" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Priti-Patel">Priti Patel</keyword>, is now open for applications from this week and is expected to particularly benefit Indian students, who are known to choose their degree courses based on the prospect of work experience. The Graduate route is designed for international graduates who have been awarded their degree from a recognised UK university to stay on and look for work for at least two years. "To put it into some context, last year more than 56,000 Indian nationals were granted a student visa, that's a 13 per cent increase on the previous year, and that is almost now a quarter of all student visas issued by the UK," Patel told . "When you think about those numbers, think about the totality in terms of how this route will benefit India, it's a very, very big move. And, we will continue to work with the various academic institutions on making this route viable," she said. For the new route, international graduates must have completed an eligible course at a UK higher education provider with a track record of compliance with the government's immigration requirements. It is unsponsored, meaning applicants do not need a job offer to apply and crucially they can use a two-year period to stay on and look for a job. There are no minimum salary requirements or caps on numbers, allowing graduates on the route to work flexibly, switch jobs and develop their career as required. "As we build back better, it is vital that the UK continues to be a beacon for talented young people across the globe who want to make a difference. The new Graduate route does just that, giving the best and brightest graduates the opportunity to continue contributing to the UK's prosperity and the freedom to kickstart their careers in the UK," said Patel. A coronavirus concession on the date by which students must enter the UK to qualify for the route, if they started courses in 2020 and are unable to travel due to the pandemic, was recently extended. Applicants who began their studies in autumn 2020 or in spring 2021 will need to be in the UK on a student visa by September 27 this year. Students beginning their course later this year or early next year will need to be in the UK by April 6, 2022. This has been welcomed by Indian student groups in the UK, concerned about India's categorisation under the red list of countries from where travel currently remains banned, making it compulsory for Indian students to quarantine at considerably additional expense. "Many other countries do not offer that microcosm, foundation of diaspora community, natural heritage, all the cultural links, all the values that we share between our two countries. That puts us in a very strong position, both for Indian students coming here and securing their future opportunities in the workplace," Patel said. The new route, part of the <keyword id="3444934" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="post-brexit">post-Brexit</keyword> points-based immigration system, is pegged as part of the UK's Global Britain message of attracting the best talent from around the world and covers all parts of the United Kingdom. "International students are a vital part of our society, and those who graduate from our world-leading universities should have the opportunity to stay and build meaningful careers here in the UK," said Universities Minister Michelle Donelan. "That is why we are introducing this new route for international graduates, enabling British businesses to attract and retain some of the brightest, most talented graduates across the globe, and helping this nation build back better from the pandemic," she said. Anne Marie Graham, Chief Executive of UK Council for International Student Affairs, said: "We know that employability is a priority for international students coming to study in the UK. "International students who are able to access this route will have the flexibility to apply for work in any sector or role that fits their skills profile, including self-employment without the need for employer sponsorship." To apply under the new Graduate route, international students must have completed an eligible course at a recognised UK higher education provider at undergraduate or higher level. Students on the route will be able to work or look for work after their studies for a maximum period of two years, or three years for Doctoral PhD students. The National Indian Students and Alumni Union UK (NISAU) was among the groups that actively lobbied the UK government for such a post-study visa route. "Genuine Indian applicants with demonstrable skills should considerably benefit," it added. As per reports, 10 students accepted offers that fell within this range. These figures are more common in sectors such as education and design, where entry-level salaries tend to be modest compared to other fields. <h2>IIT Bombay 2024 placements: Number of students who got jobs </h2>Out of the 2,414 students who registered for placements, 1,475 students secured job offers, bringing the placement rate to 74.53%. The placement drive saw participation from 364 companies, with 1,650 job offers being made. In addition to full-time roles, internships also played a crucial part in student preparation and employment. These offers were largely made after the completion of summer internships, highlighting the importance of these internships in securing full-time positions. <h2>Comparison of the number of students placed in the last four years</h2>IIT Bombay has seen lesser student placement numbers over when compared to last year. However, when we look at the last four years, the numbers have been stable. In the 2020-2021 season, 1,150 students were placed, which rose to 1,441 in 2021-2022. The peak was reached in 2022-2023 with 1,516 placements, while this year saw a slight decrease to 1,475. This slight dip from last year’s record high can be attributed to the challenging global economic conditions. <h2>Number of offers from different programs</h2>Different academic programs at IIT Bombay saw varying levels of placement success. The B.Tech program led the way with 683 placements, followed by the M.Tech program with 415 placements. The Dual Degree (B.Tech + M.Tech) program saw 152 students placed, while other programs such as M.Sc., M.Des, and Ph.D. had varying placement numbers, reflecting the diverse opportunities available across disciplines. <h2>International opportunities</h2>This year’s placement season also highlighted a significant rise in the number of international offers, with students receiving opportunities in countries like Japan, Taiwan, Europe, the UAE, Singapore, and the USA. 78 international job offers were made to students this year, whcih is an increase when compared to 65 offers last year. IIT Bombay 2024 placements: Lowest salary drops to Rs 4 LPA, 22 students get Rs 1 crore package

As major crypto exchanges like FTX go bankrupt amid high volatility, almost 90 per cent of <keyword id="2420795" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="cryptocurrencies" source="Orion">cryptocurrencies</keyword> have a low trading volume, with just 2 per cent of <keyword id="11098664" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="crypto-coins" source="Orion">crypto coins</keyword> having a healthy liquidity, a new study has found. There are only 153 crypto coins with high volume that are traded in many exchanges. In contrast, there are 5,886 cryptocurrencies with very low volume that are traded in a very small number of exchanges, according to the report compiled by BitStacker. This reaffirms the fact that there is unequal balance of trading volume among the thousands of cryptocurrencies and it provides a warning against speculating on crypto coins with a low liquidity, the report mentioned. "The fact that so many cryptocurrencies suffer from a low liquidity or trading volume is another reminder of how risky it can be to speculate in some of the smaller crypto coins," said Kris Lucas, a BitStacker.com analyst. "After all, there is nothing stopping an unregulated cryptocurrency exchange from creating statistics that overvalue a particular coin," he added. The researchers tracked 6,656 crypto coins, and only 2.30 per cent of these cryptocurrencies were categorized as having a good liquidity. Liquidity is a term used to refer to the trading volume of an asset. The liquidity metric used in the study aims to highlight those crypto coins that have a low daily trading volume, or those cryptocurrencies where the trades take place in a very limited number of exchanges. "Such an understanding of liquidity is useful in that it can explain more than something like market capitalization. In particular, it can help traders understand when it might be difficult to buy or sell significant quantities of any crypto coin," the report said.
