He added that with the right execution, Zepto could potentially achieve a valuation between $50 billion and $80 billion, positioning itself as a leader in the global quick commerce sector. With that being said, Palicha is keenly aware that success isn’t guaranteed. “It is largely just execution,” he noted, talking about the importance of flawless operational strategy in turning potential into reality. He also acknowledged the history of companies that had the right ingredients for success but failed to execute, highlighting Zepto’s commitment to staying focused on its core business for the foreseeable future. The startup recently closed another funding round, pulling in $665 million and boosting its valuation to $3.6 billion. The momentum doesn’t stop there. Zepto has attracted further interest from investors, with discussions underway for an additional $250 million in funding. Last month, Palicha had said that Zepto would be bigger than D-Mart in the near future. Then, there is Urban Company that has been enjoying its high status and multi-billion dollar valuation without having to worry about any competitor who may threaten to take away customers or the power to price the product at will. The on-demand home and beauty service startup — valued at a whopping<a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/news/urban-company-raises-255-million-at-over-2-billion-valuation-eyes-global-expansion/articleshow/83167168.cms"> $2.1 billion</a> in June 2021 — has spent the last seven years expanding to<a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/startups/news/urban-company-on-lookout-for-15000-service-professionals-in-50-cities-in-india/articleshow/85447261.cms"> five international markets</a>. Yet the company still has not found a rival of the same size or scale in its home market — India, which is also the largest source of its revenue. More than 1,000 startups <a href="https://www.techinasia.com/insights-from-25-failed-startups-in-india-2016">shut down</a> in India that year as investors tightened their pockets. He also emphasised that Urban Company has focused on providing standardised services, “which is very difficult to replicate when you are dealing with such a large network of people.” This has led to a very customer-centric business, with good repeat order. The ability to survive 2016 amidst tough competition and lack of funding to eventually becoming a category leader with big fundraises has acted like a moat for the company, Bansal told Business Insider. These points have allowed the company to raise close to $440 million to date from marquee investors like Tiger Global, Dragoneer Investment Group and Prosus Ventures in the not-so-distant past. “They are bringing a certain amount of quality and customer service at the centre of what they are doing. Maybe that’s what allowed them to differentiate themselves and after a certain scale VCs [venture capitalists] look at these things as a one horse kind of a game,” Kabir Kochhar, partner at Anthill, told Business Insider. Does this mean the company will be the single big player in its play? The experts are still split over how the market would look and who are going to be the next big players competing against Urban Company. Many may not know this, but Amazon already made an entry in this segment six years ago with its investment in Housejoy, which specifically focused on home services like house repairs, cleaning, fumigation and more. Housejoy has also been trying to revamp its offering since February 2021. It expanded to on-demand beauty services in some of its cities including Bengaluru in association with salon chain Naturals. The Bengaluru-based startup, founded around the same time as Urban Company, has raised about $30 million to date and raised its last round in 2018. Again, the key to Urban Company lies in the investors’ willingness to fuel its competitor “[If] Somebody like Reliance and Amazon decides that they want to get into it and invest a very huge amount of capital to build on to it, then they can because the market is extremely large. It’s not like Urban Company has captured the market, it’ll be a very small percentage. Inorganic medium — investments, mergers and acquisitions (M&amp;A), etc — is the only way to make a segway in this play. “Unfortunately, there are not too many high quality players of scale, which are in this segment so it may actually mean that Urban Company becomes one large player in this segment,” he noted. Meanwhile, Kochhar of Anthill Ventures told Business Insider, “I don’t think that Urban Company will be a market leader in all these different kinds of services. I can see the verticalisation happening better also. The stock is still trading at ₹65 apiece, but Singh’s profit is just on paper for now. <div type="image" title="spicejet" height="900" width="1200" msid="88742186" hostid="261"></div>The immediate challenges In December 2021, the Madras High Court had reportedly ordered the winding up of SpiceJet and asked the official liquidator to take over the airline’s assets. This happened after the company failed to pay dues of around $24 million to Switzerland-based SR Technics, which provided maintenance and repairing services to the airline for a decade. Adding to it, the airline barely has any money to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/corporates/news/spicejets-liquidity-turbulence-hits-worlds-largest-aircraft-leasing-companies/articleshow/87583233.cms">pay GST dues of ₹285 crore</a>. This, according to a Business Standard report, has prevented SpiceJet from sending back 13 Boeing 737 aircraft to its lessors. Due to non-payment of tax dues, the tax authorities have refused to grant a ‘no objection certificate’ to SpiceJet to give back the leased aircraft to its lessors. Even If SpiceJet survives these, there will be more turbulence ahead Even with the limited competition so far, SpiceJet has only lost customers ⁠— its market share has gone down to 10% at the end of November from 13.2% in November last year. The company could argue that it’s the second biggest player, but the gap between Singh’s airline and the market leader Indigo, owned by Interglobe Aviation, is a staggering one. And it could get worse with new players with deep pockets entering the space. <div type="image" title="airline" msid="88742190" hostid="261"></div>In October 2021, Tata Sons bought <keyword id="2573" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="air-india" source="Orion">Air India</keyword> <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/thelife/news/tata-sons-just-won-the-bid-for-ownership-of-air-india-in-a-full-circle-moment-see-the-airlineaposs-89-year-history/slidelist/86949254.cms">from the government</a>. Another airline joining the race is <keyword id="11911527" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="akasa-air" source="Orion">Akasa Air</keyword>, co-founded by billionaire and marquee investor Rakesh Jhunjhunwala. “If a downturn like this comes around again and you have guys like Tatas, Rakesh Jhunjhunwala willing to pump in a lot of money into the new product. And you are sitting crash-strapped, not able to access capital, you are as good as pushing yourself out of the market,” said Praveen Paul, a Bengaluru-based aviation consultant. And the pandemic isn’t helping “I think SpiceJet’s revival will take much longer. Now lots of restrictions posted by many cities, states, governments and in any case business travel was going to take a lot of time, which has already come down. Besides, we are already in winter and people are deferring their holidays both domestic and international. So overall industry outlook is not good with oil prices remaining firm and demand not picking up,” said aviation expert Amrit Pandurangi. Rising fuel prices are making it worse. Aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices have nearly doubled in the last 12 months. Given that these costs <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/transportation/airlines-/-aviation/atf-price-hike-set-to-hurt-aviation-travel-rebound/articleshow/87476903.cms">account</a> for up to 40% of an airline’s total operating costs, this is a major cause of concern for the ailing SpiceJet. “All these airlines have huge dues to pay regularly. It is like people paying EMI, they have to pay lease for aircrafts, pay parking charges whether or not they fly aircraft, air traffic charges. Only variable cost for airlines is fuel cost and air traffic charges, everything else is fixed cost,” Paul said. SpiceJet was co-founded by Ajay Singh in 2005 with the objective of making flying affordable for all Indians. In 2010, Singh exited the airline. Five years later, when the airline was on the verge of shutting down, Singh rescued the airline by buying 58% stake at a dirt cheap price. Now, in 2022, the future isn’t looking any more rosy than it did in 2015. It’s not just COVID-19 ⁠— SpiceJet’s survival is getting challenged by rising costs, low cash, and new players with deep pockets

<ul><li><keyword id="6587619" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Upasana-Taku" source="Orion">Upasana Taku</keyword> of <keyword id="143842" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mobikwik" source="Orion">Mobikwik</keyword> believes that it's not as easy as some companies are making it out to be.</li><li>The company claims to be the largest <keyword id="9522245" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="bnpl" source="Orion">BNPL</keyword> fintech company in India with 24 million pre-approved BNPL users.</li><li>According to Redseer, digital BNPL players’ GMV could scale up 15 times to $45-50 billion in the next four years.</li></ul>‘Buy Now, Pay Later’ (BNPL) has become the new buzzword in the Indian fintech ecosystem that everyone has been chasing. From Paytm to Ola Money, everyone has been looking to get deeper into the fintech space and generate revenue out of this simple form of micro loans. However, Upasana Taku of Mobikwik believes that it's not as easy as a few companies are making it out to be. Mobikwik – which has been in the BNPL space since the last two years – noted that there is a lot that goes behind the scenes in order to build these BNPL processes. “Lending as a feature the whole world is making. Don’t worry, mein bhi yahin hoon, aap bhi yahin hoon. 2024 mein baat karein gaye, vo sab band ho gaya hoga... Log na excitement mein aa kar posuting, prespetion aur valuation k liye cheezein shuru kar dete hain phir usmeine grand opening and grand closing ho jati hai [We are here, we’ll talk in 2024, till then all these new businesses will be shut. People get excited and start new vertices for posturing, perception and valuation. Then there is a grand opening and a grand closing],” Taku said. She also gave examples of how Flipkart, Ola, Amazon and several other non-traditional players entered the wallet payments in 2015 as it became a fad, but later exited since they had no expertise in the domain. Even MakeMyTrip has a wallet, but it is now only used for cashbacks, she added. “Kuch cheezein fashion mein aati hain, jitni jaldi aati hai utni jaldi fashion se nikal bhi jaati hai… Ultimately kya hota hai ki yeh sab khulta hai, ek-do saal paise bhetein hain. Phir 1-2 saal mein yeh sab baand bhi ho jata hai kyunki sabko realize hota hai ki hum apne core business mein leadership position to manage nahi kar paa rahe hain. Hum ek aur side business mein bina focus ke kya karna cha rahe hai. [These are just fads that come and go. Ultimately, the companies flow a lot of cash in these fads for 1-2 years and then shut it down as they realise that they are not able to manage leadership positions in their core business and it makes no sense for them to enter a new vertical without focus,” she added. <div type="image" title="INTERVIEW: Mobikwik’s Upasana Taku says all the companies that made their grand entry into BNPL will have a grand exit too" msid="89960638" hostid="261"></div> Taku has zeroed down on three major problems that any new fintech company planning to get into consumer-facing BNPL products might face. First, where to get the customer. Second, where to get the data from. Third, who to partner with so that the customers can spend the credited amount. How to get consumers? “You need consumers, and consumer ko acquire karne ke liye customer acquisition cost lagti hai [to acquire consumers you need to spend on customer acquisition cost], which if you're acquiring from a Google or a Facebook or a partner, it is going to be ₹1000 or higher per person. That’s a massive problem for any new fintech that is starting, because it will cost them a lot of money to acquire new customers,” she added. Where to get the data? Citing this as a “chicken and egg” problem, Taku explained that the Credit Information Bureau (India) Limited (CIBIL) only has data of the top 50-60 million people in India. These are the type of users that top banks and credit card companies have been chasing for loans. A BNPL product usually focuses on users, who usually don’t have any credit history or data on them, but are transacting digitally. These platforms don’t just need this data to know who to lend to, but also to know how much to lend. Another issue for new BNPL companies is that if they acquire 1000 customers, only a part of it would be creditworthy. However, since the companies have spent so much capital on acquiring these users, they can’t really reduce the ticket size of these BNPL credits. “Now most fintechs are giving ₹10,000, ₹30,000, ₹40,000 on a three months EMI [equated monthly installment] kind of product. But that is when they are able to make money on it. They can’t reduce the ticket size because it is a problem that they spent so much on acquising the total users,” Taku noted. Where will customers spend this credit? The third and another major challenge is setting up a BNPL business is getting merchants to use the payment feature so that the customers have enough options to spend the credited amount. Several companies like Zomato, Swiggy, Amazon and Flipkart currently accept BNPL whether directly or through third party platforms like Simpl, LazyPay, ZestPay and others. There is not much sense to borrowing capital from fintech startups if you are not able to spend it. “As an example, there is a company called Simpl. They also have a <keyword id="4585897" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="buy-now-pay-later" source="Orion">buy now pay later</keyword> product. They are not into the payments business. So they don’t have millions of merchants unlike us. Therefore, their PayLater product is available in a few hundred ecommerce platforms or apps. That is a problem,” Taku added. “In a platform play [it is easier], because you already have millions of merchants, you already have millions of customers,” Taku explained. Uber recently launched UberMedic in partnership with the National Health Authority (NHA) across India - a 24/7 dedicated transport service for COVID-19 healthcare workers. Grocery and food delivery players such as Swiggy, Zomato, Grofers, and others, are currently promoting ‘contactless deliveries’. <div type="Article" hostid="261" msid="74992299" title="Zomato rolls out its grocery delivery service – Zomato Market" mstype="2" mssubtype="0"></div></li><li>State governments can initiate an arrangement with such companies to utilise a part of their fleet, technology, and trained agents for last mile delivery of food and other essential items during lockdown. As other on-demand startups such as Urban Company struggle with orders and their workers face uncertainty, their repository of trained personnel such as carpenters, plumbers, electricians etc., can be roped in to bolster the national response to the crisis. <div type="Article" hostid="261" msid="75040048" title="Ola, Uber switch gears to get on to Covid-19 duty in India" mstype="2" mssubtype="0"></div></li><li>Akshay Patra Foundation, an NGO and partner in the government’s midday meal programme in several states, is currently engaging corporate volunteers to distribute freshly cooked food and relief kits.
