However, things took a bizarre turn when BigBasket responded with an apology, assuming the praise was a complaint. “We regret the inconvenience caused,” they wrote, requesting the customer’s contact details. The automated response ignited further humour online. Users quickly jumped in with comments like, “Bruh, she’s praising you, why are you sorry?” and “Bot life is so awkward.” What could have been a PR win for BigBasket turned into a comical misunderstanding that highlighted the sometimes robotic nature of customer service. <h2>Zepto’s <keyword id="23584077" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="I-Pill-notification" source="keywords">I-Pill notification</keyword> </h2> In Bengaluru, Zepto faced backlash after sending an inappropriate push notification to customer Pallavi Pareek. The message, reading, “I miss you, Pallavi. Says i-Pill emergency contraceptive pill,” followed by teary-eyed emojis, left Pallavi shocked. HDFC Bank and Swiggy launch co-branded credit card – cashback, offers and more

As reports surfaced that several high-end restaurants with multiple outlets in Delhi-NCR have delisted from <keyword id="13921938" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Swiggy-dineout" source="Orion">Swiggy Dineout</keyword> amid deep discounting concerns, reliable industry sources said on Thursday that most of those cafes and restaurants have also delisted themselves from other online food delivery platforms like <keyword id="11830133" type="DOMAIN" weightage="20" keywordseo="zomato" botkeyword="" source="ET" sourcekeytype="COMPANY" meta.keywordsubtype="EQ" meta.aliasname="zomato" meta.entityname="Zomato Ltd." meta.entityid="57948" meta.seoname="zomato-ltd">Zomato</keyword>. The sources told IANS that only 20 brands with nearly 400 outlets have delisted from <keyword id="6358977" type="General" weightage="90" keywordseo="Swiggy" source="Orion">Swiggy</keyword> <keyword id="2199085" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="Dineout" source="Orion">Dineout</keyword>, and one of those brands even has nearly 250 dining outlets alone. According to them, restaurants like Smoke House Deli, Social, The Beer Cafe and Mamagoto have deregistered themselves from most of the online food aggregator platforms, not just Swiggy. A Swiggy spokesperson told IANS that Swiggy Dineout works with over 15,000 restaurant partners on the platform in over 20 cities and continuously engages with them to improve its offering and make this partnership viable for everyone. "Restaurant partners on Swiggy Dineout have complete liberty to decide on how much discount they wish to offer to customers through their listing on the app," the spokesperson said. "Thousands of partners continue to join us each month and list on Swiggy Dineout and only a handful of restaurant partners have expressed their desire to delist from the platform. We continue to engage with restaurant partners and NRAI representatives to revisit their choices," the food delivery platform told IANS. In online food delivery platform Swiggy in May announced it has acquired Dineout, a dining out and restaurant tech platform, for an undisclosed sum. According to sources, it was a $120 million deal. Founded in 2012 by Ankit Mehrotra, Nikhil Bakshi, Sahil Jain, and Vivek Kapoor, Dineout helps people discover the best restaurants, make table reservations, and enjoy discounts and privileges across select restaurants. NRAI has said that Dineout's deep discounting techniques disrupt the core dine-in business of the restaurants and "popularise a dangerous culture of discounting that will be irreversible". Swiggy denies exodus of high-end cafes, restaurants amid deep discounting concerns

New Delhi, Two men were arrested for allegedly duping people by hacking food and grocery delivery app <keyword id="19896956" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="swiggy" source="keywords">Swiggy</keyword> account, a Delhi Police official said on Monday. The accused were identified as <keyword id="20480275" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="aniket" source="keywords">Aniket</keyword> Kalra (25), and Himanshu Kumar (23), both residents of <keyword id="19921445" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="gurugram" source="keywords">Gurugram</keyword>, Haryana. According to police, the duo was using 'Interactive Voice Response (IVR) system to hack Swiggy accounts of the victims. The official said that after hacking the account, the accused used to place orders from the victims account and then used to sell the grocery products at a lower price. Their arrest came after a woman complainant, a resident of Sultanpur was cheated of Rs 97,197 by some unknown persons from her Lazy Pay account linked with Swiggy account. During the investigation, technical analysis of call details and money transaction was made and it was found that complainant received a call in late night hours from an Automated Telephony Interactive Voice Response (IVR) System and she was told in Pre-Recorded Voice Responses that somebody is trying to access her Swiggy account. Thereafter, her Swiggy account was hacked and online orders of Rs 97,197 were placed using her Lazypay account linked with Swiggy. "Further, CDR analysis of the calling number revealed that the mobile number from which the complainant received the call is an application based generated number connected with IVR System. Simultaneously, details from Swiggy were obtained and it came to notice that the alleged orders were delivered in Gurugram," said the Deputy Commissioner of Police (south) Ankit Chauhan. The mobile number used for delivering the products was found registered on fake ownership. "The team worked on all the available aspects of the case. The efforts of the team bore fruits when during IMEI search, the location of suspect was zeroed in Sector 7, Gurugram, Haryana," said the <keyword id="19916219" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="dcp" source="keywords">DCP</keyword>. Raids were conducted and Aniket and Himanshu were apprehended. On interrogation, Aniket disclosed that he used to work as a delivery boy in Zomato and Swiggy. "Thereafter, he started buying grocery items from online selling platform at lower price through offers and then used to sell them in the market, thus saving 5 per cent-10 per cent on every order. Further, he along with co-accused <keyword id="20646636" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ansh" source="keywords">Ansh</keyword>, a resident of Punjab met on telegram and they both started duping people through IVR Calling system," said the DCP. Ansh has the data of people who have linked their credit card/debit card/internet banking with their Swiggy account. "Ansh used to target victims by hacking their Swiggy account through pre-recorded voice responses and thereby accessing confidential data of victims. Then Aniket used to link a phone number registered on fake ownership with the Swiggy account of the victim and then used to place orders of Grocery items for as much amount as available in the account of the victim," said the DCP. The random addresses of Gurugram were provided for delivery of items to avoid any police action. "Aniket and his friend Himanshu used to sell the grocery items in the local market at discounted price and then used to send 50 per cent profit to Ansh via cash depositing machines or various UPI Id's," said the DCP. Himanshu owns a medical shop in Gurugram and under the guise of a medical shop he was involved in transferring the cheated amounts to various UPI IDs and accounts. "Further investigation of the case is in progress to trace the co-accused and to link other cases," the DCP added.

The restaurant aggregator and food delivery company has clarified that it has nothing to do with the prices offered by restaurants. Zomato says its job is limited to presenting the restaurant as an option to order from and enabling delivery. Zomato and Swiggy charge the restaurants extra for allocating their own delivery partners to fulfill the order, although the delivery charges are also paid by the customers. While some restaurants opt for their own delivery partners, others choose to go with the option provided by the third-party app. It is a common practice for restaurants to increase their prices on third-party apps like Zomato and Swiggy to ensure they do not pay for the commission. Over the last two years, several restaurants have started accepting orders through their own apps and websites to save on these commissions and provide better offers to their customers. The food delivery companies also charge a certain premium from restaurants for discoverability of their restaurants, placement on the app and other promotional activities. This advertising cost is different for each restaurant based on their negotiated terms with Zomato and Swiggy. Such advertisement charges are also common on other e-commerce platforms like Amazon and Flipkart, to promote certain sellers. “We charge our restaurant partner commissions based on an agreed-upon rate. We remit to the restaurant partner a net amount equal to the cost of food ordered and packaging charges, less the commission and any restaurant-funded discounts. Swiggy works on similar lines. Both these platforms faced a lot of criticism from restaurant partners back in 2019 for their deep discounting practices, which forced these companies to decrease their discounts to an extent. “Once we have been able to establish a robust brand presence and achieve a high share of satisfied customers in a particular market, we are typically in a position to decrease marketing expenses on a per-order basis… As a percentage of total income, our advertisement and sales promotion expenses decreased from 88.43% in fiscal 2019 to 24.88% in fiscal 2021,” Zomato noted. And thus, as these discounts reduce, the food ordered online gets more expensive. This means that the current changes are applicable only to Swiggy One subscribers for now. Swiggy One is the company’s premium subscription service that offers benefits such as free delivery, additional discounts and more. The company currently offers two plans – a quarterly plan and an annual plan. Swiggy cracks down on password sharing, allows users to use same account on only two devices

Online food delivery platform <keyword id="6358977" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="swiggy" source="Orion">Swiggy</keyword>'s losses doubled to ₹3,629 crore in FY22 compared to ₹1,617 crore in the last fiscal year. Total expenses went up 131% to ₹9,574.5 crore in FY22. According to its annual financial statement with the Registrar of Companies (RoC), during the last quarter of FY22, Swiggy turned "decacorn" (with a valuation of $10 billion and above) after raising a $700 million round led by Invesco. Meanwhile, Swiggy's revenue grew 2.2 times to ₹5,705 crore during FY22 as opposed to ₹2,547 crore in FY21. According to Entrackr, outsourcing support costs accounted for 24.5% of the total expenses of the company. This particular cost increased 2.3 times to ₹2,350 crore in FY22 from ₹1,031 crore in FY21. Its advertising and promotional expenses surged 4 times to reach ₹1,848.7 crore during FY22, according to the report. Reports surfaced last month that Swiggy may lay off more than 250 employees or up to 5% of its workforce starting January. "There have been no layoffs at Swiggy. We concluded our performance cycle in October and have announced ratings and promotions at all levels. As with every cycle, we expect exits based on performance," a Swiggy spokesperson had said in a statement. Citing Swiggy investor Prosus' financial report, Jefferies said that the gross value of Swiggy's food delivery business was $1.3 billion in the January-June period this year. Zomato in the same period logged a gross order volume of $1.6 billion. In May last year, Swiggy acquired Dineout, a dining-out and restaurant tech platform, for an undisclosed sum. The local kirana store or India’s largest retail chain, all of them are keen on getting a piece of the <keyword id="1410674" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="online-grocery-delivery" source="Orion">online grocery delivery</keyword> market. DMart, for instance, has set up its app and pick-up centers for home delivery after handling its bulk delivery orders during the pandemic. Reliance Retail too stepped into this delivery business with its app, <keyword id="8506093" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="jiomart" source="Orion">JioMart</keyword> with little success, though it has also invested in Dunzo. Time does matter When it comes to the delivery market, it’s not about what you deliver, how you deliver but it’s all about ‘when’ you deliver. Most of the online <keyword id="2709620" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="grocery-delivery" source="Orion">grocery delivery</keyword> hinges on timing which is why quick commerce companies are walking away with a lion’s share of the pie. “Grocery shopping in India’s major cities is set to undergo a never-seen-before tec(h)tonic shift led by quick commerce platforms,” said a report by JM Financial. Online grocery market has two segments -- quick commerce and scheduled e-grocery. Only Jiomart, Bigbasket and DMart are scheduled e-grocery stores, all the other platforms are in a race of quick delivery business. And the segment seems to be ruled by the ‘10-30-minute delivery’ offered by platforms like <keyword id="6358977" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="swiggy" source="Orion">Swiggy</keyword>, Blinkit, Zepto and Dunzo. Most of the retail chains who intend to deliver groceries however have a one-day lag period between order and delivery. Added to that, quick commerce platforms are addressing multiple consumer pain-points such as convenience, speed, curated assortment, value, and round-the clock standardized services. Online food ordering business is <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/retail/news/grocery-business-is-like-poison-pill-for-zomato-after-failing-miserably-two-times-as-per-analysts/articleshow/92202068.cms">aiding growth in the e-grocery as well</a>. Customers who order food online for convenience, wider selection, discounts and standardized customer support are also likely to be more amenable to ordering grocery items online for the very same reasons. This opens up cross-sell opportunities for food-techs like Swiggy and Blinkit, which is merging with Zomato. Paan to curds - quick commerce delivers it all A February 2022 Survey by LocalCircles indicates that 71% of the households used q-commerce platforms to either order daily use items such as milk, bread, eggs, curd, fruits and vegetables, etc. They also ordered indulgence items such as soft drinks, ice creams, chocolates and paan. Though, only 29% of the surveyed households used q-commerce for ‘all their grocery’ purchases. For the bulk purchases however, the large format stores are still in the running as people are going to the stores. DMart is still aggressively opening stores in parts of the country to get back to pre-covid levels. “We believe it will look to accelerate store expansion and the benefit of recent expansion is yet to fully kick in – revenue intensity is lower than pre-Covid levels,” said analysts at ICICI Securities post its March quarter earnings. Redseer estimates the grocery market size in India was worth $620 billion in 2021, which is expected to grow at a CAGR of 8% over the next four years to reach over $850 billion by 2025. Quick commerce is all set for the long haul Quick commerce players are also vying for a bigger piece of the entire pie. The quick ordering might start with fresher foods like fruits and vegetables, meat, dairy and other ready-to-cook items; and also indulgence categories like chocolates, biscuits, snacking items, cold drinks, and tobacco. But it could extend to others too. “We also expect grocery staples, cooking essentials, medicines, baby and personal care, home care and pet care, amongst others, to pick up as consumers become more habituated to ordering through the platforms,” said the JM Financial report. Recently, Swiggy raised $700 million for quick-commerce grocery service Instamart. Zomato poured $150 million into quick commerce startup Blinkit. Zepto raised $200 million and lastly Reliance Industries also caught the quick commerce train by investing $200 million in Dunzo. This also means that competitive intensity is likely to be severe in the near term, between them and also with the big retailers. “Only those platforms that have very strong customer recall, robust back-end supply chain and/or strong balance sheet are likely to survive this battle of attrition,” said the report. JM Financial believes that quick delivery platforms have what it takes to disrupt the unorganized grocery market including neighbourhood kirana stores or even retail chains like DMart in large cities.
