Gig economy is dominated by millennials but women make up for less than a third of the workforce

In tier 2 and 3 cities like Surat, Belgaum, Guwahati and Lucknow over 20% of Swiggy’s delivery partners use cycles for delivery. In India, 10,000 delivery partners use cycles, with maximum cyclists in Bangalore followed by Mumbai. “A couple of years back, we initiated concerted efforts to make millions of our deliveries more sustainable for the environment. With close to 10,000 delivery partners on cycles each day, we have found that in some of our cities, the average travel time for a delivery partner on cycles is even lesser than bikes or scooters,” said Srivats TS, VP, Marketing, Swiggy. Swiggy’s competitor Zomato too had introduced delivery through bicycles in February 2019. The next mile of delivery For delivery startups, fast innovation is defining their stand in the industry. Swiggy is piloting the use of Electric Vehicles for its deliveries in 10 cities. Last year, Swiggy’s delivery partners in cities like Delhi and Lucknow carried out deliveries on e-rickshaws. The company’s official statement said that the adoption of EVs will reduce the running cost by 40%. The $3.6 billion startup said that it will continue to focus on meat, seafood, petcare gourmet and its essential delivery service Instamart, which delivers products like groceries, fresh fruits &amp; vegetables, personal care items among other things. “With a delivery promise of 30 to 45 minutes, Instamart is rapidly becoming a favourite among consumers (in Bangalore and Gurgaon) while unlocking a new dimension of convenience retailing in India,” said the spokesperson. Even though Swiggy operates food delivery services in 500 cities, it has said that it will restrict grocery to about 20 cities. “Pre-COVID, 80% of Swiggy’s business was food delivery, and the remaining came from other segments. The company expects this ratio to change to 50-50 in the next 2 to 3 years, with increased contribution from grocery, cloud kitchen, etc,” said a Goldman Sachs report from November, 2020. During this ‘unprecedented year,’ the only constant has been our undeniable love for good food. Some people put on their chef’s hat, others decided to order happiness from delivery apps like Swiggy, Zomato and Dunzo in the form of Biryanis. Our routines altered, we started exercising and jumped from one fitness app onto the other, but Biryani was that constant bright bowl of happiness. Why Biryani, you ask? Biryani is that pot of happiness that never disappoints. “Biryani ek art hai, art.” It takes you on a roller-coaster ride with its comforting warmth, spices that bring water in your eyes, elaichi (well, who put you here?), and its aroma. Like 2020, it is multi-layered but each layer promises something exciting and it also has different versions like Kolkata biryani, Muradabadi biryani, Hyderabadi Biryani, Ambur biryani, to name a few -- so that you never get bored. It is the best sleep inducer that makes a boring Zoom call interesting. It doesn’t burn in a hole in your pocket either. You can also take a picture of it to add some colours to your Instagram feed and your DMs flooding with, “akele akele” is just a perk that comes with it. Just a mention of it is enough to make one’s mouth water and feel hungry. Need I go on? Rebel Foods’ Behrouz Biryani even released a campaign to celebrate India’s love for Biryani. In fact, the mighty Chicken Biryani reaffirmed its place as India’s favourite dish. It was the most ordered dish on FoodTech apps like Zomato, Swiggy and Dunzo. With a whopping 44,30,008 orders on Zomato and 5.5 lakh on Swiggy, it has enjoyed popularity across all states, leaving behind pizza, pasta and french fries. As per Swiggy’s StatEATstics report, Veg, Chicken, Mutton or Aloo, collectively some form of Biryani was ordered more than once every second in 2020! For every Veg Biryani, there were six Chicken Biryani orders. Chicken Biryani was the number one sold dish, Mutton Biryani snagged the 5th spot. Swiggy also added 3 lakh new customers because of Biryani as they made their debut on the app by ordering the dish. Zomato, on the other hand, delivered 22 biryani every minute in 2020! For instance, Dunzo is available in Delhi, Bengaluru, Gurgaon, Pune, Chennai, Mumbai and Hyderabad. Within Delhi however it doesn't extend to areas like Dwarka. Swiggy Go, on the other hand, is only available in Bangalore so far. But the company has plans to expand to the rest of India. Their resources and manpower are greater than what Dunzo has at its disposal. By 2020, Swiggy Go expects to be operational in 300 cities. Size does matter Another catch is the package size. Whatever errand you're running through Swiggy Go should fit within the confines of its delivery bag. So, if you're sending your clothes for wash, there are only so many that you can bundle together. "Swiggy's vision is to elevate the quality of life of urban consumers by offering unparalleled convenience. After enabling this with food delivery for five years and stores across the city with Swiggy Stores, Go will open the Swiggy delivery superpower to all consumers in the city," said Swiggy CEO Sriharsha Majety. New Delhi, Apr 19 () Hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic-triggered lockdown, the premier hotel chain Hilton will now serve select food items at doorsteps via Zomato and Swiggy. Customers can order 20 items from a select menu from the comforts of their homes for "safe and contactless delivery". "Currently, six Hilton properties are operational for food delivery via Zomato and Swiggy -- Conrad Bangalore, Conrad Pune, Hilton Garden Inn Gurgaon, Hilton Chennai, DoubleTree Ahmedabad and Hilton Mumbai. The group plans to soon expand this service to 9-10 more properties across Delhi-NCR, Mumbai, Bangalore, Pune, Ahmedabad, Lucknow and Chennai," a statement from the company said. The patrons can also use its curated delivery for parties which will be done by Hilton staff, it said. The company claimed to be following stringent hygiene protocols and taken all necessary precautions to ensure safety in food delivery in the wake of the COVID-19 outbreak. "These include regular staff health-checkups and ensuring that everyone wears face masks, gloves, caps and use of sanitiser. The company also has stringent quality check procedures in place for the delivery staff, including temperature checks, sanitisation of vehicles and cleanliness checks, in addition to the use of masks and gloves. For packaging, Hilton will be using biodegradable plastic, paper, and cardboard," it said. The company is unable to cater to its regular customers due to stringent lockdown imposed across the country which has brought economic activity to a halt. "We have been receiving frequent calls from our regular customers who are currently unable to visit their favourite outlets at Hilton hotels, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. After careful deliberation and taking into account feedback from our customers, we are pleased to launch our food delivery service featuring Hilton's signature dishes," Prashant Kulkarni, Food and Beverage Director, Hilton India said. To check the spread of the novel coronavirus which has so far claimed at least 507 lives and infected more than 15,000 people, India is now under a lockdown.
