Indian food delivery service <keyword id="6358977" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="swiggy">Swiggy</keyword> has been running a pretty brisk business in the country so far. However, the company's journey hasn't been without controversy. Swiggy has often been accused of inflating their order numbers and even of <a href="https://www.enidhi.net/2018/02/beware-of-swiggys-menu-increased-prices.html">inflating prices of items</a> on their menus. And, we can add another allegation to that list. That of its customer service representatives lying to you. This, we add from personal experience. First order This happened first on the afternoon of 13 June. I placed an order from a Cafe Coffee Day outlet nearby. The order was for a coffee and a chilli cheese toast.  Admittedly, it took me a while to realise this, since I didn't open the package till about half an hour after the order was delivered. But I then called <keyword id="6626580" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="swiggy-customer-care">Swiggy customer care</keyword> and informed them of the mistake. The customer service representative on the other end placed the call on hold, saying he would get in touch with the restaurant. He returned a few minutes later saying he's placing a replacement order on my behalf. All good. About 18 minutes later, I got a call from Swiggy's rider, informing me that the "item isn't available" at the restaurant. That, evidently means that the customer service executive never actually contacted the restaurant. Because why would they place a replacement order otherwise. Like a good customer, I took to complaining about this on Twitter, to which Swiggy responded. After trying and failing to get in touch with me a few times, they finally did, on 15 June. The caller informed me that it was a mistake, accepted that the customer service executive had lied and pleaded that I "give them another chance". My money was refunded to the transaction mode quickly too. Honestly, I had deleted the app before I got this call. Yet, I downloaded it again, around midnight on 15 June. My mistake.

 Second order I placed an order from Swiggy again, between 12.30 and 1 AM. After a few minutes, I noticed that the app said Swiggy's delivery executive was at the restaurant, but my order wasn't yet confirmed.  The customer service executive proceeded to inform me that my order was indeed confirmed. To which, I specifically asked him if he has checked with the rider who was supposedly at the restaurant. Here's how that conversation went. Me: So, the app shows that your delivery executive is there (at the restaurant) but my order isn't confirmed yet. Customer service: Let me check sir. (A few minutes later) Sir, I can see now your order has been confirmed. I have confirmed the order from my side. Me: It is confirmed though? Have you checked with the executive? Customer service: Ya sir, it's confirmed actually. Me: Ok, ok. Because the app isn't letting me call the executive either. I don't know why. Customer service: That must be some issue. Me: But it's confirmed, right? Customer service: Yes, sir. No need to worry. At 1.10 AM I received another call from Swiggy's customer service. The person on the other end, evidently unaware of this former exchange, informed me that...wait for it...the restaurant is closed!

 Like most frustrated customers, I proceeded to exclaim, shout and hang up. I even send a DM to Swiggy on Twitter, since their earlier DMs were still fresh. I got two more calls from the company after that, neither of which were completed, because I hung up before they could finish. And what happened of my order, or my money? Well, it remained under the "order processing" status. Why does Swiggy do this? The answer to this perhaps lies in a 2017 blog post by parties claiming to be ex-Swiggy employees. The post explained how the company showed fake order numbers to its investors, in order to raise money. Here's an excerpt from <a href="https://swiggysales.tumblr.com/post/163409582196/swiggy-a-house-of-cards">that post</a>: "We know for a fact that our management has lied to investors about our order volumes during the latest fundraise. Our January 2017 order volumes were less than December 2016 volumes. Yes, we had a decline of order volumes in January. But we have seen the investor presentations, and they have shaved off the December numbers in the slides in order to show a linear growth curve across all months of our existence." While Swiggy rubbished the post in a "<a href="https://bytes.swiggy.com/swiggys-response-a-note-from-the-ceo-25c123e51a64">note from the CEO</a>" later, cancelling orders is not in the company's interest. Based on my experience, it would seem that the company's customer service has been told not to cancel orders, or perhaps even contact the riders. And given that the company takes care of deliveries only, that makes Swiggy almost impossible to trust. As a footnote, I should also mention that I have faced similar issues with Swiggy’s service earlier. I had written each of those instances off as one-off incidents, and Swiggy had either refunded my money, or given me coupons/Swiggy credits in return. But that seems to be the company’s response to everything, instead of actually providing good service. Update: The second order was finally cancelled about an hour after Swiggy's calls, and the money was refunded. I also got a call from Swiggy's "escalation team" the next afternoon who, once again, accepted their errors and said the agents who spoke to me were at fault. Later, they offered a cake as compensation, which I obviously refused.

Here’s how Swiggy’s customer service lies to you

<ul><li><keyword id="6358977" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="swiggy">Swiggy</keyword> delivered 1.5 million food orders in March only on cycles. </li><li>The maximum delivery partners in cycles were in Bangalore followed by Mumbai. </li><li>Swiggy is also piloting delivery through EVs. </li></ul>Indian delivery <keyword id="6362513" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="startups">startups</keyword> have been taking a turn towards “green” delivery by switching to <keyword id="6354973" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="electric-vehicles">electric vehicles</keyword> and cycles. <keyword id="3105315" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Foodtech">Foodtech</keyword> unicorn Swiggy introduced food delivery on cycles in 2017, and it seems to have finally taken off now. Swiggy reported that in March it delivered 1.5 million food orders on cycles. In tier 2 and 3 cities like Surat, Belgaum, Guwahati and Lucknow over 20% of Swiggy’s delivery partners use cycles for delivery. In India, 10,000 delivery partners use cycles, with maximum cyclists in Bangalore followed by Mumbai. “A couple of years back, we initiated concerted efforts to make millions of our deliveries more sustainable for the environment. With close to 10,000 delivery partners on cycles each day, we have found that in some of our cities, the average travel time for a delivery partner on cycles is even lesser than bikes or scooters,” said Srivats TS, VP, Marketing, Swiggy. Swiggy’s competitor Zomato too had introduced delivery through bicycles in February 2019. According to <a href="https://inc42.com/buzz/zomato-enrols-bicycles-e-bikes-for-delivery-in-12-cities/">reports</a>, Zomato had partnered with startups like Mobycy, Yulu, Zoomcar’s PEDL among others to start the delivery service. The next mile of delivery For delivery startups, fast innovation is defining their stand in the industry. Swiggy is piloting the use of Electric Vehicles for its deliveries in 10 cities. Last year, Swiggy’s delivery partners in cities like Delhi and Lucknow carried out deliveries on e-rickshaws. The company’s official statement said that the adoption of EVs will reduce the running cost by 40%. Going one step ahead, Zomato had earlier <a href="https://www.thehindu.com/business/Industry/zomato-acquires-drone-delivery-startup-techeagle/article25671762.ece">acquired</a> drone startup TechEagle innovations. With this, the startup is reportedly testing delivery via drones. Meanwhile, logistics startup DOT which offers last mile delivery through e-vehicles has been ramping up its business and is also looking at a <a href="https://www.thehindubusinessline.com/economy/logistics/logistics-startup-dot-eyes-rs-365-crore-revenue-in-fy20/article26356832.ece">revenue </a>of ₹360 crore by 2020. Swiggy rides the green wave, delivers 1.5 million orders on cycles; electric vehicles are next

The programme, named "<keyword id="13699950" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Step-Ahead" source="Orion">Step-Ahead</keyword>" is aimed at giving an opportunity to those executives who want to move from their current flexible engagement with Swiggy to a dedicated, managerial role, the company said. "Swiggy has consistently maintained that our delivery executives are the backbone of our operations; and we are proud to enable an income opportunity for over 2.7 lakh women and men across the country," said Mihir Rajesh Shah, VP, Operations, Swiggy, in a statement. "While most may consider their association with the platform as a stop gap between jobs or an education, or even an additional source of income, we realise that there are some who want more. With aStep Ahead', Swiggy is creating a unique opportunity for those interested to flip their collar from blue to white and take on a managerial role," he added. To be eligible for the role of a Fleet Manager, a Swiggy delivery executive must hold a college degree, possess communication skills and basic computer knowledge and should have been delivering with Swiggy for a few years. Managing a fleet of delivery executives, the fleet managers, will be responsible for different roles like maintaining metrics like login hours, cancellations, resolving queries, and working on special projects for delivery executives. Being well-versed with the challenges and opportunities at a ground level owing to their rich experience in delivery, seasoned delivery executives are a natural fit. Over the years, numerous Swiggy delivery executives have joined the platform as fleet managers. With 'Step Ahead', Swiggy is formalising this process and intends to reserve at least 20 per cent of all Fleet Manager hires for its delivery executives. Swiggy is also considering reducing the tenure requirement to around two years. Swiggy currently has over 2.7 lakh delivery partners across the country. They receive benefits such as accident insurance and medical cover, personal loans, legal assistance, covid income support, emergency support, income support during accident or illness recovery, bereavement leaves, period time off, maternity cover among others. Swiggy to upskill delivery boys to become company employees

New Delhi, Online food delivery platform <keyword id="6358977" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Swiggy" source="Orion">Swiggy</keyword> on Tuesday said it has facilitated over Rs 450 crore in loan disbursal to more than 8,000 restaurant owners as part of its capital assist programme. Launched in 2017, the capital assist programme is a first-in-the-segment solution designed to bridge the financing gap and empower restaurant owners. Over 8,000 restaurants have availed loans so far, of which 3,000 availed loans in 2022 alone, the company said in a statement. Partnering with multiple lending partners, including Indifi, Incred, FT Cash, PayU Finance, and IIFL, Swiggy offers tailored financial solutions like term loans and credit lines. "The NBFCs will soon facilitate more exciting solutions like pre-approved loans to enable our partners to gain easier and quicker access to capital, driving even more growth for their businesses," said Swapnil Bajpai, VP-Supply, Swiggy. From quick sign-ups to even quicker approvals, through capital assist programme, the NBFCs take a fast, easy, and efficient approach to provide funds for restaurant partner's business needs. "We have done three rounds of financing so far and have used these funds for our working capital requirements. Swiggy disburses over Rs 450 cr in loans to 8000 restaurant owners

For instance, Dunzo is available in Delhi, Bengaluru, Gurgaon, Pune, Chennai, Mumbai and Hyderabad. Within Delhi however it doesn't extend to areas like Dwarka. Swiggy Go, on the other hand, is only available in Bangalore so far. But the company has plans to expand to the rest of India. Their resources and manpower are greater than what Dunzo has at its disposal. By 2020, Swiggy Go expects to be operational in 300 cities. Size does matter Another catch is the package size. Whatever errand you're running through Swiggy Go should fit within the confines of its delivery bag. So, if you're sending your clothes for wash, there are only so many that you can bundle together. "Swiggy's vision is to elevate the quality of life of urban consumers by offering unparalleled convenience. After enabling this with food delivery for five years and stores across the city with Swiggy Stores, Go will open the Swiggy delivery superpower to all consumers in the city," said Swiggy CEO Sriharsha Majety. Swiggy recently also launched its Swiggy Stores in Gurgaon and is now expanding its grocery service to Bengaluru and Hyderabad. The company also claims that they're expanding the categories in Swiggy Stores to include fruits and vegetables, kiranas and supermarkets, meat stores and pharmacies. Swiggy's pick up and drop service debuts with an advantage over Dunzo — but it may cost you a little extra

And now Swiggy wants a bigger share of the plate as it is in talks with Uber to take over the operations of <keyword id="4704786" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="UberEATS-India">Ubereats India</keyword>. According to a report on the <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/small-biz/startups/newsbuzz/uber-eats-india-likely-to-end-up-on-swiggys-plate/articleshow/68105369.cms">Economic Times</a>, the deal is in its final stages of negotiation and is expected to close by next month. The report further mentions that the deal could be a share swap, where Swiggy in exchange for taking over Ubereats will give the ride hailing company Uber a 10% stake. Earlier <a href="https://www.businesstoday.in/current/corporate/ubereats-on-sale-swiggy-zomato-competing-acquire-food-delivery-app-report/story/321164.html">reports</a> also suggested that Zomato and Swiggy both were looking at acquiring Ubereats India operations. Both the companies together hold 80% of the online food delivery space in India. With Swiggy reportedly leading the race for acquisition now, the deal would give the company a better stand to take on rival Zomato. Ubereats launched in India in 2016 and has grown considerably over time. Jason Droege, global head of Ubereats told <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/small-biz/startups/newsbuzz/india-fastest-growing-market-for-ubereats/articleshow/66384076.cms">ET </a>that its India wing has grown seven fold in order volume in the past six months in India, while adding over 4,500 delivery partners each week. Swiggy became one of India’s fastest unicorn in June last year, getting the prime status in just four years of operations. In December 2018, the food delivery startup further raked up a whopping <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/small-biz/startups/newsbuzz/with-1-b-new-money-and-3-3-b-valuation-swiggy-turns-swaggy/articleshow/67186809.cms">$1 billion</a> in funding, taking up its valuation to $3.3 billion. “With this funding, we will further invest in building differentiated offerings, plugging the white spaces in the ecosystem, and developing our technology while keeping superlative customer experience at the core," said Sriharsha Majety, CEO, Swiggy had then <a href="https://www.entrepreneur.com/article/308736">said</a>. The startup is also expanding its <a href="https://www.businesstoday.in/current/corporate/not-only-food-swiggy-will-also-delivery-groceries-medicines-vegetables-at-your-doorstep/story/318547.html">offering</a>, as it announced earlier in February, that it will soon start delivery of groceries, medicines and more. Swiggy wants more on its plate, in talks to acquire Ubereats India

New Delhi, Jun 8 () Food ordering and delivery platform Swiggy on Monday said it plans to transition the services offered by its premium on-demand delivery platform Scootsy in Mumbai to the company's platforms in the near future. Swiggy had acquired Scootsy in 2018 for around Rs 50 crore and said at that time that the Mumbai-based firm will continue to operate as an independent app post the acquisition. "To expand our footprint to all discerning customers across Mumbai, we will be transitioning the services offered by Scootsy to Swiggy's platforms in the near future. This will be the first major milestone in setting up the premium category for Swiggy," a Swiggy spokesperson said in a statement. In line with this, all Scootsy customers will be redirected to a curated selection on the Swiggy app where they can experience the same level of service along with the widest choice of cuisines and restaurants supported by Swiggy's delivery, it added. During the past few months, Swiggy has witnessed a surge in demand for curated food choices from premium brands, the statement said. "Through our partnerships with ITC Hotels, Marriott, Hyatt, KA Hospitality and the likes, we intend to further elevate our premium selection and category experience for consumers on Swiggy," it added.
