E-commerce giant Amazon and Alibaba-backed <keyword id="964794" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="BigBasket">BigBasket</keyword> have got approval to deliver liquor in West Bengal, according to a document. Online grocery platform BigBasket said this will be the company's first foray into the country's liquor delivery segment. The clearance also signals Amazon's entry into the space, likely for the first in India. State-owned West Bengal State Beverages Corporation Ltd (BevCo) invited the two companies to sign the agreements for empanelment for home delivery after finding them eligible, as per a notice dated June 19. BevCo, the sole wholesaler of liquor in West Bengal, also invited two Kolkata-based companies -- Senrysa Technologies Pvt Ltd and Golden Goenka Commerce Pvt Ltd for the signing of agreements. Asked when BigBasket would start operations, its CEO Hari Menon told PTI, "I cannot confirm now how soon we will start, but yes it will be the first for the company." New Delhi, May 21 () Food ordering and delivery platform Swiggy on Thursday said it has started home delivery of alcohol in Ranchi and is in talks with various state governments to provide support with online processing and home delivery of alcohol in their states. The service has gone live in Ranchi and will be launched in other major cities in Jharkhand within a week, Swiggy said in a statement. The company is also in advanced stage of discussions with multiple state governments to provide support with online processing and home delivery of alcohol, it added. To ensure safe delivery of alcohol in compliance with applicable laws, Swiggy has introduced measures such as mandatory age verification and user authentication to complete deliveries, the statement said. "By enabling home delivery of alcohol in a safe and responsible manner, we can generate additional business for retail outlets while solving the problem of overcrowding, thereby promoting social distancing," Swiggy Vice-President (Products) Anuj Rathi said. Taking advantage of the company's existing technology and infrastructure to enable hyperlocal deliveries, it has been working closely with the local authorities to support them with initiatives like expansion of grocery delivery and COVID-19 relief efforts, he added. New Delhi, Jun 4 () After Jharkhand and Odisha, food ordering and delivery platform Swiggy on Thursday started home delivery of alcohol in Kolkata and Siliguri and plans to expand to 24 other cities across West Bengal. Swiggy is leveraging its existing technology and logistics infrastructure to ensure all guidelines are maintained including social distancing, a company statement said. Food ordering platforms have initiated home delivery of alcohol as part of efforts to prevent overcrowding of people at shops amid the coronavirus pandemic. "Building on our successful launches in Jharkhand and Odisha we will now be enabling safe home delivery of alcohol in West Bengal. Starting with Kolkata and Siliguri, we will expand our services to 24 other cities across the state," a company spokesperson said. The company is partnering with authorised retailers across major cities after validating their license and other required documents as outlined by the state government. Retail partners will be equipped with a dedicated partner app that enables all aspects related to online processing of orders, the statement said. The spokesperson further noted that the company has been working closely with the West Bengal government since the beginning of the lockdown to provide support on multiple fronts including delivering grocery and essentials, seafood items, schoolbooks and distributing close to one lakh meals to the needy in Kolkata. Both the delivery partners and retailers are being virtually trained through their respective apps to facilitate smooth processing and fulfilment of orders. Starting with Bhubaneswar, the company will soon expand to other cities like Rourkela, Balasore, Balangir, Sambalpur, Berhampur and Cuttack, Zomato said in a statement. In a separate statement, Swiggy said its home delivery service went live in Bhubaneswar and Rourkela on Tuesday after obtaining necessary approvals from the Odisha government, and plans to expand to other major cities in the state. Liquor shops were mostly closed in the first three phases of the nationwide lockdown that started on March 25. In the fourth phase, which began from May 18, liquor shops have opened except in certain places. The extended lockdown is to end on May 31. Earlier this month, the Supreme Court asked states to consider non-direct contact or online sales and home delivery of liquor during the lockdown period to prevent the spread of coronavirus on account of crowding at the shops. "We're happy to be of service to our users in Odisha who can now use Zomato to get alcohol delivered in addition to grocery and food delivery," Zomato Vice President Rakesh Ranjan said. <ul><li>While Zomato’s sales have been increasing, the food delivery giant is still unable to make profits on account of huge expenses led by discounts and marketing.</li><li>It posted a net loss of ₹1,222 crore for the March quarter, which is an increase of nearly 50% since last year.</li><li>However, analysts believe the food delivery business has a huge potential as it is estimated to be a $110 billion opportunity by 2025.</li><li>Both Zomato and its rival Swiggy together hold 90-95% market share in India’s food delivery business.</li></ul>Food delivery company Zomato has been reeling under the pressure to turn profitable since July last year, <a href="http://a-strong-public-market-debut-at-51-premium-shares-open-at-115/articleshow/84667265.cms">the day it went public </a>and raised over ₹9,000 crore from the public. Since its listing, Zomato investors have seen their wealth decline by half, and there seems to be no letting up yet. Brokerages believe there might be a chance for the company to woo investors in a few years as there lies a huge opportunity in front of them. According to a report by JM Financial, Zomato’s path to operational profitability (also known as EBITDA profitability) requires two things. EBITDA is short for earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation. “We believe order volumes and contribution margin per order are two key variables that would determine Zomato’s path to profitability. Our analysis suggests the company can turn profitable in FY25 on a cash EBITDA basis if it were to reach annual order volumes of 1 billion (2.5x FY20 levels) and a contribution margin of around ₹21 per order,” said the report. Adding to it, the report says it sees a ramp-up beyond the food ecosystem can also provide incremental growth. It expects Zomato to follow global peers in terms of expanding beyond food delivery and explore adjacencies in the form of grocery delivery, alcohol delivery, medicine delivery, on-demand delivery and insta shopping. Its recent investment in Grofers and a majority stake in Fitso is a validation of expansion into adjacent areas, states the report. We expect this penetration to increase to around 15% over the next 5 years, effectively growing the monthly active user base of Zomato to 45 million by FY26,” said the report. The brokerage expects the growth to be driven by the growing share of millennials/Gen Z in the ‘earning’ population and fast-growing e-commerce penetration beyond Tier-1 cities. Customer addition remains strong, but 9 out of 10 orders are from old users New customer additions by Zomato remained strong in Jan-Mar with around 5.5 million new additions. However, more than 90% of its food delivery business is being driven by repeat users compared to new users. “The company expects growth in the near term to be driven by repeat customers as there is substantial room for improvement in average annual ordering frequency (which is around 10 per user per year),” said the report by JM Financial. Zomato’s path to profitability in the next three years requires two things, say analysts

<ul><li>A total of 57 malls across the top eight cities in <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword> lie largely unused. </li><li>The highest number of ghost malls are in <keyword id="66" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="delhi" source="Orion">Delhi</keyword> <keyword id="53426" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="ncr" source="Orion">NCR</keyword>, <keyword id="2094" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="pune" source="Orion">Pune</keyword> and <keyword id="6354552" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="hyderabad" source="Orion">Hyderabad</keyword>. </li><li>Apart from the ghost malls, the overall mall health has improved post pandemic with their numbers increasing from 255 in 2018 to 271 currently. </li><li>Organised retail sale volumes expected to reach $136 billion by FY28. </li></ul>A total of 57 malls, or 21% malls, across the top eight cities in India are in a dilapidated state and have resulted in a loss of over $524 million, according to <keyword id="151748" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="knight-frank-india" source="Orion">Knight Frank India</keyword>’s latest report ‘Think India, Think Retail 2022’. If a mall has a vacancy of more than 40%, it’s defined as a ‘ghost mall’. The highest number of ghost malls are in Delhi NCR , followed by Pune and Hyderabad. Lack of due diligence, mall shortcomings such as size and ownership patterns, design issues, faulty layouts with dark alleys, lack of customer walk flow management, low occupancy and lack of anchor tenants — have all contributed to the creation of these ghost malls. “All attempts to breathe life into these assets and attract a good retailer mix and footfalls have been unsuccessful. As a result, the revenue generation potential of such malls is far below the expected threshold,” the report said. In some cases, termination notices have been served to shut down a few large format stores which comprised an entire mall. Discontinuation of operations, demolition of shops inside the mall premises and auctioning of the mall property due to non payment of dues to the local mall authority are also underway, said the Knight Frank report. The report also has a few suggestions for utilising these ghost malls. “The vacant spaces of ghost malls can be used for thrift stores, food and clothing banks, exhibition, presentation and event spaces. <keyword id="153014" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="daycare" source="Orion">Daycare</keyword>, elder care, pet care and even elementary and secondary schools can be opened. Workforce training centres and human development centres for government services can also spring up in ghost malls,” said <keyword id="1417134" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="shishir-baijal" source="Orion">Shishir Baijal</keyword>, chairman and MD of Knight Frank India at the unveiling of the report. Leasing out empty spaces for long-term commercial use to local businesses that cannot afford high rents in prime office business parks or popular business districts can also be done, the report suggested. Demolition of the existing structure and sale of land to minimise the losses was another suggestion that was put forth. Malls witnessing growth despite rise of e-commerce The report also stated that excluding the ghost malls, the overall mall health has improved post pandemic. There were 255 malls in 2018 but it has risen to 271 now — adding over 15 million sq feet. Despite the rise of e-commerce, India’s physical stores still account for 95% of retail business, the report claimed. The retail industry will continue to account for 10% of India's GDP for the next five financial years. The organised retail sales grew at a CAGR of 24% between FY 2017- 22. The organised retail sector in India, despite taking a hit during the pandemic, is still growing. Post Covid, the recovery in operational metrics of malls has been healthy, with consumption in January-June 2022 growing 20-25% from the same period in FY2020, the report said. “With this large-scale pent-up demand, shopping centre development has seen a new rigour after being at a standstill for almost 2 years. In the next 12 months, we expect an addition of 8-9 mn sq ft of mall space.This is not just limited to the tier 1 markets. Tier 2 and 3 cities are also ready to support mid to large scale mall developments,” Rajneesh Mahajan, CEO of Inorbit Malls said. As per <keyword id="913436" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="knight-frank-research" source="Orion">Knight Frank Research</keyword>, organised retail sales volume is estimated to grow at a CAGR of 17%, from $52 billion in FY22 to $136 billion by FY28. New Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore have the maximum number of malls, with Hyderabad performing the best in maximum occupancy in Grade A or premium malls. India’s ghost malls have caused a loss of $524 million: Knight Frank

Domino’s ranked second.</li><li>Interestingly, the Chhattisgarh-state run CSMCL (Chhattisgarh State Marketing Corporation Limited) Online, which enabled the home-delivery of alcohol in the state, came in at the fifth position.</li></ul>In May 2020, the state of Kerala announced that liquor shops would reopen after being shut for two months due to the coronavirus pandemic. Along with the announcement, a new app also surfaced, BevQ, a virtual queue management app to enforce social distancing. And in the eight months that followed, the app, which works only in the state of Kerala, beat all other Indian food and drink apps in 2020 to see the highest growth in year-on-year sessions, according to the State of Mobile 2021 report by App Annie. BevQ was developed by the Kerala-based FairCode Technologies and was also one of the apps chosen by a committee chaired by the IT secretary and the Kerala Startup Mission. The app issues tokens and time slots for people to buy alcohol from bars and restaurants. BevQ, which got over a lakh downloads within hours of its launch, found its place in the App Annie ranking even when bars and liquor stores in Kerala had opened only partially in May 2020 before being shut down again due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The stores across the state reopened only in December 2020. A liquor sale queue management app in Kerala beat all other Indian food and drink apps in 2020

The social media outpouring by the employees is streaming on Twitter with the hashtag #IndiabullsResign and one employee posted, "Even after knowing current Pendamic situation #Indiabulls is firing around 2000+ staff without any notice. Firstly they deducted our salary after that they are pressurized to self resignation. How will people get new job in these tough days (sic)." It is said that these employees were being sacked over WhatsApp calls which cannot be recorded. "Before virus, tension and depression will kills emp's who's getting fired by their companies thru WhatsApp call without any clarification or any notice period in this <keyword id="224944" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Corona">corona</keyword> crisis and creating panic so that they will return to Hometown," said one netizen, with the hashtag Indiabulls_Forcing__For_Resign. "#indiabulls Harashing its too much mentally harashment, today indiabulls doing with us .without any proper intimation company saying that my economic condition is too bad m unable to give u salary from next month..They all r mentally harashing us (sic.)," posted another. Some have criticized that Indiabulls could donate in the PM Cares Fund but cant pay salaries. Amar Thakur posted, "I don't understand this. #Indiabulls which donated 21 crores to #PMCARES fund has #laidoff 2000+ #employees with no severance package. These guys had the money to donate to PM CARES fund but don't have money to pay salaries for their employees. Why would a company do this??". Antara Mukherjee posted on Twitter, "Indiabulls contributes 21cr in the PM-covid fund and then take oneday salary from the employees as covid fund, cut out salary 20-40% from the employees and then finally asking to leave the company. But in system all will be found as voluntarily (sic.)." Many of these posts are being marked to the Prime Minister, Home Minister, Labour Minister among others. "Indiabulls firing forcefully to thousands of employees without any notice with a reason of lockdown. Forced salary deduction to 30% also done. Need ur help for full compensation. Thanks..!!", says another post. Indiabulls did not respond a query seeking its response on the matter till the time of publication.
