After its inaugural show in Delhi in 2011 saw about 5,000 visitors, the grand event has witnessed close to 15-20% increase in footfall, on an average, with each passing year. Today, CCI has expanded beyond Delhi to cities like Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Pune. It will soon launch in Ahmedabad, Kolkata and Chennai. Moreover, witnessing the love among youngsters for pop-culture and everything related to comics and superheroes, increasingly brands have started looking at the event as an effective touch-point, to reach out to its target audience. As Mumbai gets ready for the event to be held this weekend, we caught up with <keyword id="229684" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jatin-Varma">Jatin Varma</keyword>, Founder of CCI, who spoke to us about the event’s growth in the past few years and why more and more brands are choosing to associate with the event. Edited excerpts: Q. What kind of growth has CCI witnessed in the past few years? Can you give us an estimate in terms of an increase in the number of stalls/footfall? Over the past few years, we have seen our footfalls increase at an average of 15-20%. However, this also depends on the increase in showfloor space as we can only accommodate so many people at one go. Q. There has been an increase in brands wanting to associate with the event too. What are the benefits that a brand draws from associating with CCI? What kind of increase has your brand association seen? Brands associations have been growing for us, year-on-year. In fact, it has doubled since 2015. Ours is a unique platform, where a brand has the ability to reach out to an extremely engaged consumer. Plus our audience sits in the sweet spot of 18-36 years of age and spends hours at our show, therefore giving a brand a great experiential marketing opportunity. Some of the brands that have associated with us this year are Maruti Suzuki, Lenovo, AMD, Myntra, Asian Paints, ACT Fibernet, Sony Entertainment, Viacom, Disney India, Warner Brothers, Hotstar and Lionsgate Pictures, amongst others. Q. What kind of associations are OTT players like Hotstar and Lionsgate Pictures looking at? It's a sponsor association, where they take up space to showcase the latest content on their platforms. Their key objective is to market the premium content on their platforms. Q. Comic Con in the US sees participation from many prominent celebrities, to celebrate their movies or shows. Can we expect the Comic Con format in India to get closer to the US format in the next few years? That's a misconception that people end up having at times. All shows around the world, including the US feature comics, merch, cosplay, gaming and more. The same applies to us. What differs is the scale of the show at times (depending which show you might compare us with). The format is exactly the same, having travelled, experienced and also been part of organizing teams of shows around the world, I can attest to that. With respect to guests, that's a larger market-based issue, wherein the Studio has to decide whether the local market justifies investing in bringing talent down to the country along with previewing content exclusively for the Indian audiences. I think you'll see this happen more and more in the coming years, with talent and previews not just at our shows but in general being showcased for the Indian audiences. Having said that, over the past few years, we have brought down guests from various popular television series (such as Game of Thrones, Doctor Who, Sherlock) and recently even a WWE star in collaboration with WWE India. And since this is the Indian market, we actively feature previews and talent from Indian properties, be it films, TV or web series. Q. How have you been marketing CCI so far? Have you increased your marketing spends this year? Does digital take the biggest share? Our marketing is mostly digital, leveraging our database and social media. We certainly have partnerships along with some ATL spends, but we mostly connect with our audience digitally. The marketing spends this year are about 10% higher than the last financial year. Q. Can we expect CCI to go to more cities in the near future? Definitely! We are launching Ahmedabad in February 2020 and we also plan to go to Kolkata, Chennai and again to Pune soon. Q. What are your strategies to taking CCI to the next level? Next season will kickstart our 10th year as an organization. Going forward we hope to expand the experiential element of the show and give fans more to do at the show. We hope to leverage our partners to give Indian fans access to more content as well as access to their favorite stars. Lastly, we hope to push forward the gaming element at our shows in a bigger way.

 With train fares sky rocketing (read surge pricing) and the minister ambitious enough to introduce world class facility in Indian trains, I believed <keyword id="6355455" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Railways">Indian Railways</keyword> must be heading to a grand renovation and might match the travel-quality in other developed South Asian counterparts of it. 
 To travel to <keyword id="6354925" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Kolkata">Kolkata</keyword> from New Delhi, I wanted to experience how Indian Railways must have changed in the days of Talgo trial runs and <keyword id="6355629" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Google">Google</keyword> enabled wi-fi in stations. I ditched the allure of flash sales of airlines offering me a <keyword id="1475258" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Delhi-Kolkata">Delhi-Kolkata</keyword> flight ticket for Rs 2500, inclusive of all taxes. A day before my journey last month, I bought a ticket on the newly introduced surge pricing for New Delhi-Sealdah Rajdhani Express, one of the premium trains in the country. The ticket, although priced at Rs. 2105 costed me something around Rs 2850, thanks to flexi pricing. But I was hopeful that the service must have bettered and it’s worth it. 
 I reached the New Delhi station in late afternoon. With limited seating options, people squatted on the dusty floors of the platform waiting for different trains. As the <keyword id="93583" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sealdah">Sealdah</keyword> Rajdhani arrived, I was readying myself for premium hospitality from the Indian Railways. 
 
Two minutes into my designated berth, as I was checking out the place, a co passenger entered the coach with 16 sets of bags including a LED TV and packed the coup. 
 
Evening of ‘super <keyword id="18712" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="20" keywordseo="Gold">gold</keyword> dhamaka chai’ 
Twenty minutes into the journey, I was served bottled water along with the evening snacks, which consists of a namkeen (with oil dripping), a stale sandwich, a sweet, and a tea-kit. Now if you are conscious about health diet, you should have got your own snacks. The tea bag was a Super Gold Dhamaka tea, a brand you might never hear of, but it exists. 
 
Stinky toilet with flooded floor 
Moving on to the next episode – the toliet. The Wester Styled toilet was stinking and the hand shower lying on the flooded floor. I discovered that the drain outlet is clogged with dirt and it won’t be possible for the cleaner to do the needful. The washbasin tap has a missile like projectile that lands directly on your foot. Tired of it, I decided to check out the other toilet, which was slightly better. But the stink is omnipresent. The tap in this toilet needs to be patted to get the water flowing in the moving train. There are just so many lifehacks, I learnt in a few hours in the train. 
 
WTF is food-hygiene!

 Coming out of the toilet, I found the attendants of ‘Meals on Wheels’, the contractor of food service in this particular train, squatting in the floor and readying dinner. The trays have been laid down on the ground and being arranged. <keyword id="51958" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="20" keywordseo="YES">Yes</keyword>, in front of the doorways, dustbins and washrooms. Those will soon be served to the passengers. Also one side of exits are made inaccessible by these attendants because they need a place to arrange their food. So in case of an emergency, you have to depend on just two doors and emergency windows for exit. 
 
Dessert-less dinner 
 The dinner arrived at 8:30. It was a decent one with two tiny pieces of chicken, rice, roti, dal and yogurt. The passengers, who had ordered <keyword id="2396101" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Continental-meal">Continental Meal</keyword>, received cold fried chicken, pasta, bread and some inedible noodles. One of them had requested for the breads to be toasted, which the attendants denied to oblige. Well, the dinner was over by 9pm and the only dessert ice cream started getting distributed at 10:15. Yes, when most of the passengers were ready to sleep, this strategy worked better for ‘Meal on Wheels’ because 70% of passengers refused to have. We were seated in the end of the coach and somehow the ice creams got over by the middle of the coach. The server informed us that ice cream is over and they can serve Frooti, ‘if we want’. Definitely nobody wanted a fruit juice after dinner. 
 
Blankets are washed every 2 months 
As we prepared for sleep, my pillow was found to be a used-one with stains. The blanket was smelly and the attendant informed was indifferent about it. He said, blankets are washed every 2 months. The sleep wasn’t much comfortable because the AC was too cold and there was no attendant in the coach at midnight. Moreover, there were mosquitoes. The coach attendant in the morning informed us that pest control is done after 2-3 months and he can’t help with it. On asking for the complain book, he said his job would be at stake if we complain. 
 
Delay of premium train 
The breakfast doesn’t need to explained, as it was of the same quality as evening snacks with un-toasted breads. You need to choose between jam or butter, as both would exceed their budget. There was no fruit juice with it, which it used to be earlier. The train was delayed by 2 hours and reached Sealdah at around 12:30pm and there was no free water bottle or food served in extra to make up for the delay. 
 
Thou shalt tip 
Towards the end of the journey, the coach was stinking like never before. The cleaner just mopped the floor, which isn’t enough to clean the floor walked down by 72 passengers. There was no deodorizer used. And then as the train was nearing destination, the servers of 'Meals on Wheels' started asking for tips. While there is no such official order on it, the minimum tip is Rs 20 per passenger, otherwise they would just not leave and keep coaxing you. The same people who are rude enough and serve food as if doing you a favour suddenly wear ear-to-ear smile. 
 
As I completed 1454 kms on India’s premium train for 19 hours, I realized I could have simply taken the flight and reached home last night itself by paying a few hundreds more on spot-ticket.

 “We want tourists from India and the rest of the world. Our unique selling point is that you get the Sundarban low-lying forests and the <keyword id="52569" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="himalayas">Himalayas</keyword> in Darjeeling in one state,” a tourism department official told the agencies. 
 According to the <keyword id="344829" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Union-ministry-of-tourism">Union Ministry of Tourism</keyword> data, West Bengal stood at the sixth position, a rank above <keyword id="28504" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kerala">Kerala</keyword>, in getting the most foreign tourists during 2014. 
 
However for a state that is ambitious enough to grow in tourism, experts believe, would need to pen better reforms. With internal political issues, lack of good roads and a tech awareness, West Bengal government needs to look deep inside.

TVC featuring Shah Rukh Khan rekindles DDLJ on a Kolkara tram

Back in the Indian one-day international side after a gap of six years, <keyword id="6405247" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Robin-Uthappa">Robin Uthappa</keyword> has vowed to excel in the blue jersey on the three-match tour of <keyword id="6354759" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Bangladesh">Bangladesh</keyword>. The highest scorer in the seventh edition of Indian Premier League, Uthappa feels playing for India is an opportunity to start all over again. 
 
"I am very excited. It means a lot to me that I'm playing for the country again. It makes me extremely proud that I am able to do what I love doing at the highest level. But I just see this as an opportunity. I cannot sit back and I say I have made it now. It is an opportunity to start all over again," Uthappa told ESPNCricinfo in an interview on Tuesday. 
 He last played an ODI for India way back in July 2008 in the Asia Cup final, where he batted in the middle order. Uthappa, who opens the batting for Karnataka in domestic cricket, batted in the middle order in the initial stages of this year's <keyword id="6354312" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="IPL">IPL</keyword>. However, with that ploy not working, Uthappa was promoted to open, a move that triggered KKR's victory bid. The right-hander believes not much will change in the fifty-over format once he faces Bangladesh. 
 
"Winning the treble with Karnataka gave me a massive understanding of what I need to do in terms of being able to perform my role to the best of my ability. I am very certain about my role as an opening batsman, because I do it day in, day out throughout the season for Karnataka. So it is just a matter of repeating the same process at a different level," he said. 
 
Out of the 38 ODIs he played for India, he opened the batting on 13 occasions and registered three of his five career half-centuries including an 86 on debut against England at that position. The 28-year-old now has a fresh desire to help India win matches. 
 
"I know that if I stick to what works for me, I will be successful. I need to stay in the present. I need to make sure that I focus on the most important thing: to play on the merit of the ball. If I can do that, the scores will come. I am pretty confident that I can perform the role of an opening batsman to my fullest potential. I believe that I can set up games for India to win. Winning games for India is what I want to do. That is an intense desire," he said. 
 
For India's 2007 T20 World Cup winner, becoming IPL 7's Orange Cap holder with 660 runs wasn't an easy job. He had to bat through pain after suffering a toe niggle when he was hurt in the nets midway through the season. Uthappa explains his agony and how he came out of it. 
 "Two days before the Mumbai match in Cuttack, I was hit flush on my left big toe by a yorker-length delivery from Pat Cummins. Later, when I removed my shoe I had a broken nail and it was bleeding profusely. Our <keyword id="145841" type="POSITION" weightage="40" keywordseo="physiotherapist">physiotherapist</keyword> Andrew Leipus gave me some painkillers. I was positive about playing the match considering we had to win it. But on match day, when I reached the ground, I realised I could not even get a sock on easily, let alone a shoe. 
 I am a UK size 10, so Andrew suggested I try a bigger size. I tried one size bigger but that too was not going in. Then I tried Morne Morkel's size 12. But I was feeling uncomfortable in them. Andrew suggested I wear something with an open toe to take the pressure off. <keyword id="61954" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Jacques-Kallis">Jacques Kallis</keyword> had his bowling boots, which were size 11. Andrew built a nice, thick protection cap over the cut part of the shoe to provide a good cushion. Fortunately we bowled first and it gave me little more time to adjust to the shoe. I finished with the Man-of-the-Match award with an 80. I thanked Kallis and played in them till the qualifier," he said. 
 
Uthappa says that his coach Pravin Amre played a big role in helping him correct his game, which was visible in the IPL where he hit 74 fours and comparatively lower number of sixes (18). "Amre Sir has always taught me that if I had the right technique, the end result would be good. The initial part of our training was a lot about making sure that my initial movements were correct, my set-up was correct, the way I picked up the bat, the way the backlift was, the way the downswing was. When all of that is proper, 60-70% of your work is done. The rest is about getting your head into position, holding that position well and playing the ball late into the gaps. 
 
"Very early in our training, I remember telling Sir immediately after hitting a fluent cover drive that I have hit so many sixes in my life but this shot I just hit I would never forget. I hit it so sweetly. He told me not to worry because I would do it more often. It is just a feel, more like a sensation. As a result, every shot in the V past the bowler on both sides has improved," he explained. 
 
Looking ahead, Uthappa also hopes he can make it to the 2015 World Cup squad but he plans to take series by series. "I believe in my ability and that I will play in the World Cup and contribute to our country's success in a meaningful manner. That is the hope. I am very, very consciously living in the present. I am confident but for the moment I am focusing to perform and succeed in Bangladesh to begin with and carry forward the confidence into subsequent tournaments," he said.

The Indian Institute of Technology in Kanpur is now making its presence felt in the dessert business by giving a healthy twist to our quintessential sweet - laddoos. These organic laddoos are being prepared by 150 farmer families and are now sold in 22 cities - including Mumbai, Delhi, Pune, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Indore, and others. IIT-K is involved in the quality control, packaging, and distribution of these laddoos. Besides the sweet, the <keyword id="221522" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="premier-institute" source="Orion">premier institute</keyword> also helps the farmer families sell nutritious 'hareera' (a nourishing beverage) in different states under its "<keyword id="238889" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="unnati" source="Orion">Unnati</keyword>" project. <keyword id="525604" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="rita-singh" source="Orion">Rita Singh</keyword>, a convener of this project, said, "The delicacies first became popular among the students in the institute. As the demand grew, we started selling laddoos -- made from alsi (flax seeds), til (white and black sesame seeds), and gond (edible gum) -- in several cities. Now, we are seeking the help of our former students who have settled abroad to expand the business in overseas markets." The Unnati project was launched eight years ago in five villages of Kanpur's Bithoor region to encourage scientific agriculture and impart quality education to village children through smart classes. In the last year, some 150 farmer families from 10 nearby districts have joined the initiative. Scientists of the institute have also been promoting organic farming and creating awareness among the farmers. "Our idea was to teach the farmers about natural farming, small processors, buyers, and technology. Of course, we want to preserve our traditional recipes as well," said Rita. The institute has big plans for the organic produce business to provide the farmers with the maximum possible benefits. IIT-K is also leveraging blockchain technology to help the business flourish. "With the help of blockchain technology, buyers will get to see the field or house where the food product was prepared. We started with selling organic products through WhatsApp but are moving to the next level. The entire process is being streamlined. Our products will be available under the brand name Unnati. This will help the farmers immensely," Rita said. In terms of the debutant cities, Rajahmundry in Andhra Pradesh emerged as the newcomer city with the highest number of trips.
