Later, in the intra-day trade, the shares of the Gurugram-based automobile major advanced to hit a 52-week high of Rs 13,680 and 13,675 apiece on the NSE and BSE. In the morning trade, the company's market valuation also rose by Rs 15,941.78 crore to Rs 4.29 lakh crore on the BSE while it stood at Rs 4.30 lakh crore on the NSE. The 30-share BSE Sensex jumped 127 points or 0.16 per cent to trade at 81,868.34 while NSE Nifty went up 61.40 points or 0.25 per cent to 25,012.55. In a regulatory filing on Wednesday, <keyword id="44883" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Maruti-Suzuki" source="Orion">Maruti Suzuki</keyword> India reported a 47 per cent jump in net profit to Rs 3,650 crore for June quarter, riding on the back of cost reduction efforts, favourable commodity prices and foreign exchange gains. The auto major had logged a net profit of Rs 2,485 crore in April-June FY24. Net sales increased to Rs 33,875 crore in the June quarter as compared with Rs 30,845 crore in the year-ago period, the company said. The country's largest carmaker said it sold 5,21,868 vehicles during the first quarter, up 5 per cent as compared to the same period previous fiscal. The company said it sold 4,51,308 units in the domestic market in the first quarter, an increase of 4 per cent over the same period of FY24.

Is it just urban India that’s riding this wave, or has rural India also joined the bandwagon? We decode for you. <h2>What's premium, really?</h2>Imagine you’re eating Pav Bhaji at a roadside thela. Later during the day, you decide to dine out at a fancy, upmarket cafe, only to find Pav Bhaji Fondue on the menu. Same same, but much more expensive—often 5 to 10 times higher—for a little more hygiene and some better ambience! Think of premium products as this fondue. They are a notch up your regular, daily-use products soaps or shampoos, and even cars, all packaged luxuriously, offering just about the right touch of quality. The main differentiator, though, would be the price range. <h2>Driving home premium wellness</h2>A recent report by Nielsen suggests that over 70% of urban Indians are okay with paying a premium for their products. And companies are cashing in on this sentiment like never before. This explains why 58% of new products launched so far this year have been in the premium+ segment, as opposed to just 38% of new launches in regular, traditional trade. Take cars, for instance. Indians are no longer vying for a good old <keyword id="19950117" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="maruti" source="keywords">Maruti</keyword> 800 or <keyword id="20400567" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="alto" source="keywords">Alto</keyword>, traditionally known for their healthy mileage, but are rather happy investing in more swanky features that come along with high-end cars. In October 2024, India’s largest car manufacturer, <keyword id="19909974" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="maruti-suzuki" source="keywords">Maruti Suzuki</keyword>, sold 65,948 units of its compact cars like Swift, WagonR, Dzire, and more. Cars like Brezza, Ertiga, and Grand Vitara sold about 70,644 units, a 19% uptick from the sales made in October 2023, i.e. 59,147 units. Simply put, when it comes to cars, Indians are saying the bigger, the better! The same is true for India's second biggest automobile manufacturer, Hyundai. Its SUV lineup made up a staggering 68.2% of the firm's total sales made for October 2024. What's more, SUV demand remained largely consistent across urban and rural markets. <h2>Consumers are inching up</h2>FMCG (fast-moving consumer goods) are also riding the premiumization wave, with Indians prioritizing their health and wellness and not bothered about dishing out a few extra bucks for the same! You’ll find no dearth of words like organic, vegan, gluten-free, and sugar-free, peppered generously over every product you’ll see today, be it soaps, juices, or more. No wonder then, sales from premium segments in 2024 make up around 27% of all FMCG sales and even contribute a massive 42% to the sector’s value growth in India. Nielsen report further adds that luxury brands that position themselves at twice the price of their category’s average are even witnessing stellar growth. In fact, for most FMCG brands like Tata Consumer Products, <keyword id="20002610" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="hindustan-unilever" source="keywords">Hindustan Unilever</keyword> (HUL), Dabur, and Nestle, it is this premium segment that is growing much faster than their regular ones. And it's not just about daily-use products; Indians are also taking their celebrations a step over. Spirits manufacturer <keyword id="20125704" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="radico-khaitan" source="keywords">Radico Khaitan</keyword> highlighted that for the first half of 2024, their prestige &amp; above segment made for 88.4% of its net sales value. In the same period, the regular popular segment accounted for just 9.1% of their net sales. From Hindustan Unilever, which saw its premium products grow 30% over the last quarter, to <keyword id="20521971" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="kingfisher" source="keywords">Kingfisher</keyword> beer's parent company, <keyword id="20124009" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="united-breweries" source="keywords">United Breweries</keyword>, whose premium product sales volume jumped by 27% during the quarter as opposed to just a 5% rise in overall volumes, everyone is seemingly taking their lifestyle a notch above. Per the Nielsen report, in 2024, a typical global consumer spends about $13.7k per year. This is set to grow by around 2.4% to $14k as early as next year. Even a report by Goldman Sachs also highlighted a similar trend, noting that India’s affluent class, or those earning over $10,000 (Rs 8,42,694.97), is set to reach 100 million in the next 3 years. And where will this consumer spend? On premium products! <h2>Online shopping shifts from mass to class</h2>Amazon’s Great Indian Shopping Festival, which was live between September 27 and October 29 this year, saw 140 crore customers, more than 85% of whom came from non-metro Indian cities. On the site, there was a 400% spike in sales in premium sales across categories like watches, fragrances, handbags, jewelry, and more. Rival <keyword id="19896939" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="flipkart" source="keywords">Flipkart</keyword> noted a similar trend, recording 1.8x growth in premium beauty and personal care products during the first half of this year. <h2>Dialing in premiumness</h2>The Indian smartphone ecosystem has always been dominated by basic phones, or those entry- and mid-range phones that are priced between Rs 10,000 and Rs 6,000. But that has changed in recent times, with premium smartphones (i.e., those priced over Rs 60,000) registering 20%+ growth in 2024. During the first quarter of this year, sales of mass phones (priced between Rs 10,000 and 20,000) reached 44%, compared to 51% in the year-ago period. But it's all sunny and shiny in the mid-premium (priced between Rs 40,000 and Rs 60,000) and super-premium segments (priced above Rs 60,000). Sales growth has burgeoned by as much as 27% and 86% in these categories, respectively. As India continues its march toward becoming the world's third-largest economy by 2027, the premium party is just getting started. Industry experts predict that premium segments will grow faster than you can say "sustainable organic handcrafted artisanal batch of coffee." The company, which currently has around 58 per cent stake in <keyword id="44883" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="maruti-Suzuki" source="Orion">Maruti Suzuki</keyword> India, said its net sales increased by 732.6 billion yen (15.8 per cent) year-on-year to 5,374.3 billion yen for the last financial year. Operating profit increased by 115 billion yen (32.8 per cent) YoY to 465.6 billion yen. "We will continue to promote the expansion of our SUV models (in India) and aim to recover our total passenger car share," Suzuki Motor Corporation said in a statement. Currently, <keyword id="19950117" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Maruti" source="keywords">Maruti</keyword> Suzuki sells SUV (sport utility vehicle) models like Brezza, Jimny and Grand Vitara in the domestic market. The company's market share has come down to around 42 per cent from over 50 per cent a couple of years back in the domestic passenger vehicle segment on account of limited options in the SUV segment. With the market demand rising for SUVs, the company is in the process of bolstering its presence in the segment and regaining its market share. Suzuki Motor Corp said that in April 2024, a new production line with an annual capacity of 1 lakh units started operations at the Manesar plant. The company said it plans to secure a production capacity of around 40 lakh units in India by FY2030. Suzuki Motor Corp said it expects record sales and profits this fiscal due to higher unit sales. "The company is compiling strategies in various fields, including technology, and will announce the new mid-term management plan by the end of FY2024," it stated. The car maker’s shares were trading flat on Thursday morning even as brokerages underlined that margins are expected to recover and demand is expected to be stable going forward. Maruti Suzuki<a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/auto/news/maruti-suzuki-q4-net-profit-zooms-43-to-2624-crore-beating-expectations-to-add-capacity-of-1-million-vehicles/articleshow/99790060.cms"> reported</a> a 43% YoY rise in its standalone net profit to ₹2,624 crore in Q4. It is also the first auto company to cross the ₹1 lakh crore turnover mark in a financial year. Overall, its FY23 revenue grew 33% to ₹1.18 lakh crore while total domestic volumes increased 20.7%, led by utility vehicles and compact cars. Maruti Suzuki’s shares have gained 2.9% in the last one month, and a meager 1.37% in 2023 so far, underperforming the broader Nifty Auto index which gained nearly 8% and 2%, respectively. Still, post the Q4 performance and forward-looking commentary, an average of brokerage estimates suggests that there is an upside of nearly 22% in the next 12 months, with the average target price being ₹10,355 while the current market price is ₹8,518. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Small cars in the slow lane" comment="subhead" text="Small cars in the slow lane">Small cars in the slow lane</cmsannotation> On the other hand, entry-level cars like Alto K10 and S-Presso, which accounted for 14% of the company’s total sales in FY23, grew just 10% during the year. This is an industry-wide trend and not just limited to Maruti Suzuki. Data from SIAM highlighted that while utility vehicles have grown at a rapid pace of nearly 35% in FY23 crossing the 2 million mark during the year, small cars grew at a much slower pace of about 10% in this period. The outlook for the small car segment looks worse for FY24. Maruti Suzuki’s chairman RC Bharghava said in a post-earnings call with analysts that the growth in small cars is expected to remain flat, but added that he’s “not losing sleep over it”. There are two reasons for this, according to Bharghava – a decisive shift in consumer buying preferences, which is reflected in the growth in the utility vehicles segment. The other reason is affordability – small cars have gotten expensive over the years due to reasons like inflation, new regulatory requirements adding costs, among others. For instance, the entry-level Alto K10 starts at ₹4.7 lakh and goes all the way up to ₹7 lakh (approximate on-road prices), making them out of the reach of many people in a country. The average annual salary in India was ₹3.88 lakh per annum in 2021, according to data from the Reserve Bank of India. Bharghava quipped that Indians will need to get richer for the small cars to grow further. Powering the next phase of growth will be utility vehicles and electric cars – Bharghava said that Maruti will launch multiple new utility vehicles in the current financial year as it looks to expand its portfolio to counter the challenge by rivals like Tata Motors and M&amp;M. Utility vehicles accounted for 21% of Maruti Suzuki’s total domestic volumes in FY23, and 24% in Q4. In addition to this, the car maker has announced plans to launch six new electric vehicles by 2030. The company had shown off a concept version in February this year, but the first production model is expected to roll out only in 2025. Analysts at Motilal Oswal echoed similar sentiments while expressing their bullish outlook on the stock, adding that improving supplies thanks to easing semiconductor constraints will aid Maruti Suzuki’s margins. “After two consecutive years of market share loss, we believe that Maruti Suzuki is at the cusp of market share recovery led by new launches. Healthy order book and operating leverage tailwinds will further support strong performance going ahead,” the analysts at JM Financial said. Overall, both analysts and the company itself expect Maruti Suzuki to outperform the industry in FY24, which is expected to register a volume growth of 5-7%. A strong order book of 4.12 lakh units or about 25% of Maruti Suzuki’s FY23 volumes also adds to the confidence. Maruti Suzuki to drive into the SUV lane as small cars become dearer

Tata Motors reported a 4% fall in total domestic sales to 68,514 units in April as compared to 71,467 units during the same period last year. Total commercial vehicle sales of the automaker also dipped 27% to 22,492 units in April from 30,838 units last year. Also, its total wholesales declined 4% to 69,599 units as compared to 72,468 units last year. Following the weak sales, shares of Tata Motors fell more than 2% on Tuesday. Two-wheeler manufacturer Hero MotoCorp also reported a dip of 5% in its total wholesales — as it sold 3.96 lakh units in April against 4.18 lakh units last year. Shares of Hero MotoCorp were down more than 2%. Domestic sales for the two wheeler maker declined marginally to 3.86 lakh units in April 2023 from 3.98 lakh units in April 2022. But its exports slumped over 50% to 9,923 units from 20,132 units last year. The company said it expects the momentum to build up in the coming months on account of a combination of multiple factors, including a slew of new product launches, a healthy growth in the country's GDP and positive consumer sentiment. Maruti Suzuki, TVS Motor, Eicher Motors shine India’s largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki announced a good sales growth of 6.5% in passenger vehicles to 1.6 lakh units in April as compared to 1.5 lakh during the same period last year. It registered a 7% increase in total dispatches to dealers at 1.6 lakh in April. Its total sales including domestic and exports rose to 1.6 lakh units from 1.5 lakh units last year. As a result, shares of Maruti Suzuki gained 2.15% to ₹8,771. The automaker’s total domestic sales including PV, LCV and OEM stood at 1.43 lakh units as compared to 1.32 lakh units last year. Maruti Suzuki highlighted that it has been facing a shortage of electronic components while it has taken all possible measures to minimise the impact. Meanwhile, TVS Motor Company announced a 4% rise in sales at 3.06 lakh units in April 2023 from 2.95 lakh units in the same month, last year. TVS’ two-wheeler segment delivered a sales growth of 5% to 2.94 lakh units from 2.8 lakh units during the same period last year. Motorcycle volumes rose 10% to 1.52 lakh units from 1.39 lakh units. Scooter sales grew 5% to 1.07 lakh units from 1.02 lakh units last year. Reacting to the April sales numbers, shares of TVS rose 1.55% to ₹1,156 per share. Its electric vehicle, the iQube, reached a sales milestone of 1 lakh units. “The production for April 2023 was constrained due to AIS156 changeover and supply chain challenges, TVS Motor is confident of ramping up from the month of May 2023. The order book for TVS iQube continues to be very robust and TVS Motor will retain the growth momentum,” said the company in an exchange filing. At the same time, Eicher Motors reported a 18% on year jump in sales volumes of Royal Enfield motorcycles at 73,136 units against 62,155 units last year. Meanwhile, the international business of the company declined 49% to 4,255 units that were exported in April 2023 as against 8,303 units in April 2022. The models with engine capacity up to 350cc recorded 26% sales growth at 64,728 units as against 51,564 units in April 2022. Meanwhile, the sales of models with engine capacity exceeding 350cc dropped 21% to 8,408 units sold against 10,591 units in the same period last year. In the passenger vehicle segment, various carmakers including Maruti Suzuki India and Honda have already stopped manufacturing diesel cars. Gadkari said the contribution of diesel cars has already come down drastically in the country and the manufacturers need to stop selling them in the market. Terming diesel as a hazardous fuel, he noted that the country has to import the fuel to meet the demand. "Say goodbye to diesel... Please stop making them, otherwise we will just increase the tax so much that it would become difficult to sell diesel cars" Gadkari said. He said he will propose additional GST on diesel-powered generators as well. Automobiles are currently taxed at 28% GST, with additional cess ranging from 1% to 22% depending on the type of vehicle. <ul><li><keyword id="19931193" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Maruti-Suzuki-India" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Maruti Suzuki India" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Maruti Suzuki India">Maruti Suzuki India</keyword> on Friday reported a 47.8% rise in <keyword id="19942166" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="net-profit" source="keywords">net profit</keyword> for the March quarter of <keyword id="19910780" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="FY24" source="keywords">FY24</keyword>.</li><li>The auto maker reported a net profit of Rs 3,877.8 crore, on account of higher sales volume and favourable commodity prices.</li><li> The auto major had reported a net profit of Rs 2,623.6 crore in the year-ago period.</li></ul>The country's largest car maker <keyword id="19909974" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="maruti-suzuki" source="keywords">Maruti Suzuki</keyword> India on Friday reported a 47.8 per cent rise in net profit for the March quarter of FY24 to Rs 3,877.8 crore, on account of higher sales volume and favourable commodity prices. The auto major had reported a net profit of Rs 2,623.6 crore in the year-ago period, Maruti Suzuki India said in a regulatory filing. "For the first time, the company surpassed annual total sales milestone of 2 million units in FY24. The company continued to be the top exporter for the third consecutive year, now contributing 41.8 per cent of total passenger vehicle exports from India," the company stated. Maruti Suzuki shares were trading at Rs 12,687.05 apiece at the day's close, down 1.7 per cent from its previous close on the BSE.
