She said, “Terrorists don’t have banks or factories of weapons. In that context, it is important to know who supports such terrorists? Afghanistan also raised this issue a few days back. Those who sow seeds of terrorism have to pay for it. There is no your or my terrorism – we cannot win the war against terrorism like that.” 
 
Swaraj hit out hard at Pakistan when she appealed to other nations to isolate Pakistan. “Isolate a nation that doesn’t want to be a part of the fight against terrorism. We have to isolate a country that sows, grows and sells terrorism. Such countries have to be held accountable. We have to take actions against a country that allows terrorists to hold public celebrations, without bringing them to justice. Such a country is equally responsible for terrorist activities,” Swaraj said. 
 
Kashmir is an integral part of India, she said, and will remain an integral part of India. “Pakistan should better stop dreaming about it.” 
 
Swaraj’s hard-hitting speech comes against the backdrop of heightened tensions between India and Pakistan over the decades-old Kashmir dispute that has triggered three of the four wars between the two countries. 
 The speech followed a sharp attack on Pakistan by Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> on Saturday when he urged the people of Pakistan to “question their leadership on why, when both countries gained freedom together, while India exports software, Pakistan exports terrorists.” 
 
“I want to say that India is a ready for a war… India is a ready for a war on poverty. Let both countries fight to see who would eradicate poverty first… I want to tell the youth of Pakistan, let’s have a war on ending unemployment… I want to call out to the children in Pakistan, let’s declare war on illiteracy. Let’s see who wins. Let’s declare war on infant mortality and maternal deaths,” Modi had said in his speech at a rally in Kozhikode.

Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> has left for his yet another business trip, forging relations with our fellow BRICS members and the rest of the world in Ufa, but back home, it is dreary picture for his government. After celebrating the first anniversary of NaMo government with much pomp and show, the government’s can of worms is slowly opening up. 
 After the infamous Lalitgate incident, wherein party’s senior leaders, Rajasthan’s chief minister Vasundhara Raje, and Minister of External Affairs, <keyword id="6355111" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sushma-Swaraj">Sushma Swaraj</keyword> are involved of favouring ill-famed <keyword id="3257" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Lalit-Modi">Lalit Modi</keyword>, the multi-crore <keyword id="1983715" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vyapam-scam">Vyapam scam</keyword> is threatening to blow the lids off for the <keyword id="14666" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="BJP">BJP</keyword> government. 
 
The 45 unexplained deaths in Vyapam scam, one after the other, just like a movie plot, has left us stunned. But what is more disappointingly shocking for all of us is the unsettling silence of our otherwise outspoken Prime Minister Narendra Modi. But it is déjà vu for us? 
 
If you ask anyone what they remember best about the previous UPA government, they may say that it is the former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s eternal silence on every scam that was done right under his nose. And it seems, this is being replicated by the successive government as well. 
 
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had his ‘Mann ki baat’ with the aam aadmi in the country on June 28. And while he spoke at length on diverse topics and encouraged people to click #SelfieWithDaughter as a part of his ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ campaign, he has maintained a contentious silence on the spree of murders in Madhya Pradesh’s Vyapam scam and the Lalit Modi controversy that is clearly denting the government’s image. 
 
Well, if one recalls, it was the BJP and its then Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, who vociferously and categorically criticized former PM Manmohan Singh for his inability to speak against the complete anarchy in his government. 
 
On the last day of the National Council meeting ahead of the General Elections last year, Narendra Modi had labelled Manmohan Singh as ‘night watchman’. An overwhelming 2000 plus crowd cheered him as he went on with his digs at the 70 year old the then Prime Minister Singh. 
 “The <keyword id="1575" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Congress">Congress</keyword> has appointed Manmohan Singh as a night watchman…He is nothing but a puppet in the hands of the Gandhi family,” he said as the crowd went hysteric. Fast forward to June 2015, one can see a similar silence is being maintained by our superstar Prime Minister Narendra Modi on this raging controversy. 
 
PM Modi, who is quite social on Twitter, has maintained an unsettling silence there as well. Really Mr. Modi? Do you have nothing to say on the controversies that involve party’s veterans. 
 
Obviously his reticence on the controversies has not gone unnoticed. Hawk-eyed Congress has literally jumped on the opportunity to question his silence over his government’s involvement in corruption. After all, PM Modi had blown the trumpet against corruption when he said, “BJP is for a mission, Congress is for commission.” 
 
Well, his silence on recent controversy is anything but acceptable. In the Lalitgate case, the NaMo government was quick to brush aside the various documents produced by the media while its spokespersons were brazenly defending the ministers’ actions. On the other hand, the BJP government has assured of transparent investigation in the Vyapam scam, however, the string of murders has stated otherwise. No wonder, the Supreme Court had to intervene and direct the top investigating agency in India, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to take charge of the scam. 
 
The Lalit Modi controversy has successfully questioned the government’s functioning in cases of corruption while Vyapam scam threatens to reveal many skeletons in the closet. It is certain that BJP’s honeymoon period is over and there is a growing voice within the party against the tainted leaders. But with PM Modi’s brazen silence on the matter, it remains to be seen if the public is forgiving enough for them to let him go off the hook!

It’s not the era of golden silence PM Modi! Speak up before it is
too late

MUMBAI/NEW DELHI: With <keyword id="6374198" type="POSITION" weightage="100" keywordseo="BJP-President">BJP president</keyword> <keyword id="6355521" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Amit-Shah">Amit Shah</keyword> issuing categorical instructions to the party’s Maharashtra leaders not to accept anything less than 130 assembly seats from <keyword id="6358821" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Shiv-Sena">Shiv Sena</keyword>, the 25-year-old saffron alliance is likely to disintegrate, say observers. 
 Both Sena and <keyword id="14666" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="BJP">BJP</keyword> are said to be preparing to go their separate ways. The two parties have asked their cadre to prepare to go solo in the October 15 polls. The state BJP has convened a meeting of senior party functionaries in Mumbai on Tuesday to review the political situation in the wake of the aborted seat-sharing talks. 
 
As it became clear that the alliance was set to walk into the sunset, the two parties began the blame game. BJP state unit chief Devendra Fadnavis accused the Sena of bringing seat-sharing talks to a halt. “You can’t hold negotiations with a person who has closed the doors of his mind,” he told a Marathi news channel. 
 
A key Sena functionary said the alliance is dying an untimely death because of BJP’s Big Brother attitude. “BJP should accept the fact that Sena is a senior ally in the state... We accepted BJP’s ‘Mission 272’ during the LS polls. Why should our ‘Mission 150’ ruffle it?” he asked. 
 
 
 
 The Sena did make a feeble attempt earlier in the day to revive the alliance. A close confidant of Sena president <keyword id="53973" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Uddhav-Thackeray">Uddhav Thackeray</keyword> rang up BJP’s poll observer for the state, Om Prakash Mathur, suggesting resumption of seat-distribution talks, sources said.

But Mathur insisted on the party’s formula that the BJP should get 130 seats and the Sena could contest 140. The Sena president’s emissary did not get back to Mathur. 
 
Speculation was rife that the Maharashtra BJP may go for new allies, including the MNS and the NCP. However, BJP leader Rajiv Pratap Rudy scotched talk of any kind of partnership with the NCP. 
 
“Actually, we would want the saffron partnership to survive the present crisis and we are eager to contest the assembly polls as allies. This is the collective wish of the people of Maharashtra. However, should the alliance end, the BJP will contest the election [all 288 seats] on its own. There is no question of cosying up to new friends,” Rudy said. 
 
Thackeray’s Sunday formula, which earmarked 151 seats for the Sena and 119 for BJP, with the remaining 18 seats going to four smaller allies, has been rejected by BJP. “The party is over. But we have no regrets,” said a senior BJP functionary. 
 
Sena and BJP offered completely contradictory versions on reports that Shah had spoken with Thackeray over the phone earlier in the day and urged for reconciliation. While Sena rubbished these reports, Rudy said, “Shah has spoken to the Sena chief, and that itself indicates that we are very, very eager to have the alliance. We won’t pull the plug. We are hopeful a solution will be found.” 
 
 
 
 
Sources said neither party wanted to create the impression that it was the one pulling the plug. 
 
Sources in New Delhi said Shah had reiterated to Sena president BJP’s demand for 130 seats, saying the party was prepared to accept the seats which Sena had never won in the last 25 years. Sena is then learned to have improved its offer to 126 seats instead of 119, sources said. 
 
The state BJP, however, said there was no new offer from Sena for more seats. “There is practically no room for fresh talks with Sena as Thackeray has said in no uncertain terms that he would not offer a single seat more to us,” a BJP functionary pointed out. 
 Reports also said Uddhav had spoken to two top BJP leaders—foreign minister <keyword id="6355111" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sushma-Swaraj">Sushma Swaraj</keyword> and home minister Rajnath Singh—on Sunday to try and find a way out of the impasse. 
 
The saffron alliance’s fate was sealed at the BJP’s Parliamentary board meeting in New Delhi on Sunday, sources said. The state BJP leaders briefed the party president on the Sena’s “haughty” stance on seat-sharing and re-allocation of 59 Sena seats which it has been losing in five consecutive polls. 
 
Shah is believed to have told the Maharashtra leaders to take the final decision on whether or not to continue the alliance. He, however, made it clear that the party should not accept anything less than 130 seats. 
 
Shah is upset with the Sena for several reasons, it is said. First, for ignoring his “come two steps forward” appeal last week. Second, for rejecting the BJP’s 140:130:18 formula. Third, Thackeray announcing the 151:119:18 formula at a Sena conclave on Sunday in full media glare. “Seat-sharing proposals are not announced on TV channels,” remarked state BJP leader Eknath Khadse. 
 
 
 Fourth, for referring to <keyword id="71" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Prime-Minister">Prime Minister</keyword> Narendra Modi’s ‘chaiwalla’ antecedents at the Sena’s Sunday conclave. Fifthly, for snubbing Om Prakash Mathur, the BJP’s poll observer in Maharashtra, by sending Aditya Thackeray as the Sena’s emissary to a crucial meeting with Mathur last week. 
 
BJP is keen on retaining the Rashtriya Samaj Party, RPI and Shiv Sangram Sanghatana as allies in the post-Sena era as part of a rainbow coalition of caste-based parties. 
 
Sena tried to put up a brave face in the middle of this crisis in the alliance. “Sena has survived many crises in the past. We will emerge stronger from the present one as well,” said Sena leader Vinod Ghosalkar, an MLA. 
 
Pooh-poohing talks of the MNS joining hands with the BJP, MNS leader Nitin Sardesai, also an MLA, said, “As of now, we would like to concentrate on the polls entirely on our own.”

As Alliance Crumbles, BJP & Sena Begin Blame Game

The newly elected members of the <keyword id="6355187" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Lok-Sabha">Lok Sabha</keyword> took oath on the second day of the 16th Lok Sabha on June 5. Senior Congress leader Kamal Nath, who was sworn in by President Pranab Mukherjee as the pro tem Speaker, administered the oath to Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword>. 
 Senior BJP leader LK Advani and Congress president <keyword id="689" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sonia-Gandhi">Sonia Gandhi</keyword> were the next to take oath. All three leaders took the oath in Hindi. They were followed by Arjun Charan Sethi of the Biju Janata Dal, PA Sangma of the National People’s Party and Biren Singh Engti of Congress. 
Then the Cabinet ministers of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government took oath as MPs of the new Lok Sabha. 
 External Affairs Minister <keyword id="6355111" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sushma-Swaraj">Sushma Swaraj</keyword> took her oath in Sanskrit. She was followed by <keyword id="42642" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Uma-Bharti">Uma Bharti</keyword>, the Minister for Water Resources and Ganga Rejuvenation, who also took her oath in Sanskrit. Even the Union Health Minister, Harsh Vardhan, took oath in Sanskrit. Railway Minister Sadananda Gowda, Chemicals and Fertilisers Minister Ananth Kumar and Minister of State for Civil Aviation, GM Siddeshwara, took oath in Kannada. 
 
However, the BJP MPs were sad and quiet as the sudden and untimely death of the senior party leader Gopinath Munde dampened the mood. The House was adjourned for the day after paying homage to Munde and the oath-taking exercise. 
 
With the Modi wave bringing in many new MPs to the Parliament, the 16th Lok Sabha has a youthful look about it. Despite the sombre atmosphere in the Lower House, three women MPs in the BJP rows were seen clicking pictures on mobiles. It was also the time for warm handshakes as newcomers were welcomed while veterans watched on. 
 
The Congress MPs looked gloomy, though, as they talked about how things went wrong. Some of them believed that the failures of the Manmohan Singh government and the lack of accountability in the party were the main reasons behind the defeat. 
 
The 16th Lok Sabha has 315 first-time MPs, the highest in 30 years, according to data compiled by PRS Legislative, a research group that tracks the working of the Parliament.

 AFP news agency quoting Sri Lankan Police said the toll in <keyword id="7550956" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="sri-lanka-blasts">Sri Lanka blasts</keyword> had risen to 156, including 35 foreigners. The blasts took place at three churches located at Kochchikade, Negombo and Batticaloa. The three hotels that were targeted are located in Colombo, and include Shangri La Colombo, Cinnamon Grand Colombo, and Kingsbury Hotel, according to media reports. The Sri Lankan Prime Minister, Ranil Wickremesinghe, has urged the people to remain strong and united in the tragic time. Easter Sunday Blasts: Deadly explosion kills 207, Sri Lankan Prime Minister urges people to stay united and strong

A series of bomb attacks struck Sri Lanka on <keyword id="6387218" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="easter-sunday">Easter Sunday</keyword>, killing at least 156 people and injuring over 400. At least six attacks took place targeting churches and hotels, and as of 2: 30 pm IST, a seventh attack was also reported by Reuters. The Sri Lankan government has declared curfew with immediate effect and it is not clear when it will be lifted, Reuters reported. The decision came in the wake of a seventh blast that has reportedly killed at least two people in Dehiwala, near Colombo. According to a Reuters report, access to major social media services and messaging services was also shut down. Earlier, the US embassy in Colombo asked travellers to follow security instructions from local authorities and urged them to seek "shelter" and "exercise extreme caution.” The United Kingdom also issued a travel advisory. Sri Lanka blasts: Death toll rises in multiple explosions targeting churches, hotels

Rahul Gandhi created a history of sorts on Thursday. He lost the Amethi in Uttar Pradesh, which no Congress leader ever did since 1980. In fact, death took two of its MPs- Sanjay Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi away from this seat. It was then taken over by Sonia Gandhi who later had her son and her ‘heir apparent’ to take over. That proved to be a fatal mistake, this election. However, it should be mentioned that Rahul had won from this constituency thrice since 2004. Irani won, albeit with a margin of over 55,000 votes with Rahul emerging as the runner-up. Congress grip loosens <keyword id="6612" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Smriti-Irani">Smriti Irani</keyword> a former model, actress and union HRD minister achieved something only one person ever did---a non-Congress candidate who won from the seat. It has been with the party since 1967, ever since it was created. Only Rajendra Pratap Singh of Janata Party had it post-emergency between 1977-80. Irani might have gained from the Modi wave in the state and exasperation of the public against the Gandhi family who has been showing up only for elections. In fact, this time around Rahul who has been busy campaigning across the country, never even bothered to show up at his constituency. He sent his sister, Priyanka Gandhi to take up the mantle. Priyanka was welcomed with posters asking on her brother’s no-show. And, she too was criticized for showing up once in every five years. The tide has turned Irani who garnered a margin 49.7% votes, had countered a lack of Gandhi disinterest, with spirited campaigning. She had reached out to people, spoke to them, challenged dynasty politics and asked why Rahul was missing at the constituency for 15 years. When Rahul sensed the turning tide, he decided to contest from Waynad when she accused him of “running”. The stage for this victory was set in 2014 itself when BJP fielded Irani against Gandhi. Until then, few parties ever bothered to field their best candidates which includes regional parties like Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and Samajwadi Party (SP). BJP refused to back down on this Congress stronghold which brought on this victory today. Last elections too, she managed to reduce Rahul’s margin who won only by a lakh votes. The firebrand Irani is a well-known face across the country, thanks to being a lead star in a soap opera which ran for over 15 years, Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi (Every mother-in-law was once was a daughter-in-law) She had played a soft spoken and hence an ideal wife in the hit TV series. But she blossomed to become one of the most outspoken of ministers in Modi’s cabinet which is not actually known for diplomatic people. She had come down on people in favour of Narendra Modi, the prime minister. Her speeches ranged from angry to emotional to exasperation; taking her leader’s word to media channels across issues. She<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3PlGs8NCMWE"> defended her government</a> for charging Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) students with sedition law, saying they have been engaged in “unlawful activities”. She was<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H8iqdNm3egk"> moved by the suicide</a> of a dalit student Rohith Vemula led to riots; and blamed the political forces; blaming people for “using his (Rohith’s) body as a political tool”. Irani has in fact been called ‘Modi’s Sushma’ after she comfortably took up the mantle as veteran BJP politician Sushma Swaraj moved away from active politics. However, it is interesting to note that Irani who is mentored by late union telecom minister Pramod Mahajan never started as a Modi fan.
