<ul class="summary-list"><li>Amazon's sales of cheap items are surging, driven by faster delivery speeds, executive says.</li><li>Amazon's essential product sales are growing 50% faster than other items.</li></ul>The sales of cheaper items are surging on <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-ceo-explains-why-he-wants-fewer-managers-hate-bureaucracy-2024-11">Amazon</a>.During a recent internal all-hands meeting, Amazon's retail CEO <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/profile-of-amazons-new-retail-ceo-doug-herrington-2022-7">Doug Herrington</a> said that the everyday essentials business, which includes health, beauty, and grocery products, is "growing 50% faster than the rest of the store," according to a recording of the event obtained by Business Insider.The growth is primarily driven by faster delivery speeds because people tend to spend more and shop more frequently when orders arrive quickly, Herrington said. Over 50% of those everyday essentials are now delivered on the same or next day, he added."It has really supercharged our grocery and everyday essential business," Herrington said, referring to faster shipping speeds. "And these are especially the low-priced everyday essentials, the things that most households purchase every week."Amazon has been investing heavily to make its warehouse and logistics network more regional. The goal has been to not only speed up deliveries, but also make it less expensive for the company to offer faster delivery.<h2 id="c0dfe482-5c31-44d1-a35d-fdfab5fe3a43">No longer "CRaP"</h2>Lower costs help Amazon offer cheaper products, which often come with thinner profit margins. This is a notable shift from the company's previous strategy of curbing sales of such products. Internally, Amazon used to refer to these products as <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-wants-to-stop-selling-unprofitable-items-report-2018-12">"CRaP," or "can't realize a profit,"</a> because they were relatively expensive to ship and less profitable.Amazon's <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-andy-jassy-wooed-wall-street-overhauled-bloated-tech-giant-2024-7">record profits</a> in recent years, alongside <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-layoffs-10000-employees-grand-challenge-team-dramatic-changes-2022-11">drastic cost cuts</a> and major layoffs, are also contributing to the new approach. The change can potentially help Amazon better compete against Chinese e-commerce upstarts Temu and Shein, which are rapidly growing on the back of cheap items. Shein, for example, is expanding to sell more daily essentials, like toothpaste, skincare, and toys, Reuters reported.Amazon's spokesperson declined to comment.<h2 id="27100129-02ac-43d6-9461-8899978fdf94">'Perfect placement'</h2>During the recent all-hands meeting, Herrington said Amazon deliveries have become faster and cheaper after the company redesigned its network of warehouses to serve smaller regions. Now, Amazon has more warehouses assigned to customers close by, which allows for faster order fulfillment.As a result, Amazon has been able to reduce the "cost to serve" each order for two years in a row, while achieving the fastest delivery speeds for Prime shipments this year, Herrington added."We call that effort perfect placement," Herrington said.In October, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy said the company has been "maniacal" about lowering the cost to serve in recent years. It's a real competitive advantage because now Amazon can afford to sell lower-priced items economically, he said."There's an expression that we've used a lot of times over the years that it's easy to lower prices, but it's much harder to be able to afford to lower prices," Jassy said during a call with analysts.<h2 id="c402255a-a3e2-42e8-8f7f-81912d344b85">'Real positive'</h2>During last month's analyst call, Jassy added that the growth of cheaper items is a "real positive" because it is predicated on faster delivery speeds. He said that this usually leads to growth in customer loyalty, order frequency, and purchase volume."We see the ability to unlock whole new elements of the consumer spend," Jassy said.Brian Olsavsky, Amazon's CFO, added that strong growth in everyday essentials is a positive sign of Amazon becoming a part of consumers' daily shopping habits.Evercore analyst Mark Mahaney wrote in a recent note that the shift is important for Amazon, especially since its most loyal Prime membership base is <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-prime-growth-takes-off-again-record-75-americans-use-2024-4">growing at a slower pace</a>."While the growth in those categories represents a negative mix shift in terms of margins, it increases shopper loyalty, shopping frequency and increases the basket size — important if the total Prime HH membership base in the US is maturing," Mahaney wrote.Amazon is doubling down on these efforts. Herrington said in the recent all-hands meeting that Amazon is investing in new warehouse robotics technology that can further improve packaging speed. The stock traded 8.4% higher around 10:45 a.m. ET, at $111.05 a share.The company beat revenue estimates for the third quarter, reporting $22.57 billion, versus estimates of $22.45 billion. Earnings per share came in at $1.14 versus estimates of $1.10.The outlook provided to investors was also a big highlight of the report. The guidance update is rare for Disney, which usually doesn't provide forward earnings forecasts. The three-year timeframe is also significant, since most companies rarely make forecasts further out than one year, and many don't provide guidance at all. The company forecasts high single-digit earnings-per-share growth for the next fiscal year and an $875 million increase in operating income for its streaming division. Disney stock surges as rare 3-year forecast sees strong profit growth ahead

Wisp CEO Monica Cepak told Business Insider that women are "taking action as they navigate the uncertainty of these next few years.""This data indicates to us that women are really scared and are using this moment in time to take back agency over their reproductive rights by stockpiling things like emergency contraception and investing in preventive reproductive health," Cepak said.In his first term, Trump put three conservative justices on the Supreme Court, which then <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/supreme-court-abortion-decision-final-ruling-scotus-roe-v-wade-2022-6">overturned Roe v. Wade</a>. The decision undid nationwide abortion protections and allowed 13 states to pass laws that effectively banned abortion.Earlier this year, Trump took credit for ending the decadeslong precedent of legalized abortion nationwide. "Nobody else was going to get that done but me, and we did it, and we did something that was a miracle."In the 24 hours after Election Day, Wisp said it saw a 1,650% increase in new patients purchasing emergency contraception. There was a 600% increase in medication abortion sales and a 50% increase in birth control sales.Overall, Wisp's reproductive health sales (of emergency contraception, birth control, and medication abortion products) doubled compared to the week prior to the election, the company told Business Insider."We expect that momentum to sustain over the next few weeks and months," Cepak said.The purchases came from women in both anti-abortion states as well as states with widespread access to reproductive healthcare. Emergency contraception purchases surged in Texas, Indiana, and Oklahoma, where there are strict restrictions, but sales also increased in states like California and New York."Despite being states where reproductive rights are fully protected, we're seeing women take precautionary measures as the future remains uncertain," Wisp said in a statement.Amy Hagstrom Miller, the founder of Whole Woman's Health, which operates abortion clinics in multiple states, said her organization is also seeing a surge in demand for contraceptive and abortion medication."We are seeing an increased demand for emergency contraception, long-acting contraception, advanced provision of medication abortion, and we are seeing online telemed provision of these things, which I think has really reached a lot of people in states where abortion is banned," Hagstrom Miller said.The Democrats saw the abortion issue as a strength after performing well in the<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/midterms-2022-pro-choice-votes-helped-democrats-defy-election-blues-2022-11"> 2022 midterms</a>. In March, he floated a national ban at about 16 weeks of gestation. A month later, he said he wouldn't sign a national abortion ban.At a press panel on Thursday for Abortion Access Now, a national coalition advocating for abortion rights, representatives from different reproductive rights organizations reflected on the election results and the path forward."Trump ran from his record and lied about his position on abortion. Even Trump knows how unpopular abortion bans are," Kimberly Inez McGuire, the executive director of URGE: Unite for Reproductive &amp; Gender Equity, said at the panel. "We know that people in this country bristle at the thought of politicians interfering with abortion decisions."On <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/election-results-trump-harris-presidential-election-2024-11">Election Day</a>, voters turned out in favor of abortion rights in 7 out of 10 states that had it on the ballot."Abortion was on the ballot, abortion won, but the election and the results, particularly for the White House, make it really clear that the path for reproductive freedom will continue to be a long one," Mini Timmaraju, the president and CEO of Reproductive Freedom for All, said at the panel. It's an important metric for social media companies because more users typically translates to <a target="_blank" rel="" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/uber-ads-reaches-1-billion-annual-revenue-run-rate-2024-8">more advertising money</a>.<h2 id="a4db077d-6c7f-4762-ac45-41e5dcf49e1f">Paid subscribers and AI are boosting Snap</h2>The CEO also attributed the revenue growth to paid subscriptions.Snapchat+, a $3.99-a-month feature launched in 2022 amid a slump in ad revenue, reached 12 million subscribers in the third quarter. Subscribers more than doubled year over year and contributed to around $123 million of quarterly revenue.The social media platform has also overhauled its advertising business in recent years. It shifted from brand awareness ads to more expensive direct response ads that have a call to action, encouraging users to buy a product or visit a website.Despite factors that have been positively impacting Snap, the company has consistently been reporting losses, including a $153 million loss in quarter three. It reported a $368 million loss in the third quarter of 2023.Snap's 443 million user base is small compared to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/reddit-user-growth-usa-q2-earnings-results-social-media-2024-8">Meta's 3.3 billion users</a>, and TikTok's more than <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://newsroom.tiktok.com/en-us/1-billion-people-on-tiktok">1 billion</a> users, both of which it directly competes with for ad revenue.The performance gap between Snap and Meta and Google continues to widen, further accelerating Snap's market share losses and revenue growth underperformance, Jefferies analysts led by James Heaney wrote in an earnings preview note last week.The company has missed analyst expectations twice in the last four quarters. Its stock is down over 35% year-to-date.
