State authorities have ordered the closure of schools and colleges for two days. As many as 765 roads including Chandigar- <keyword id="6363190" type="General" weightage="60" keywordseo="manali" source="Orion">Manali</keyword> National Highway were closed following the torrential rains. Hundreds of people were stranded in different parts of the state, including in Chandratal in Lahaul and Spiti and near Sadhupul in Solan district. The local met office had issued a fresh red alert of extremely heavy rains (above 204 mm) in ten out of 12 districts, barring tribal districts of Kinnaur and Lahaul and Spiti, on July 9. Twenty major landslides and 17 flash floods have been reported in the past 48 hours over 30 houses have been completely and partially damaged. All major rivers including Ravi, Beas, Satluj, Swan and Chenab are in spate, officials said. While six people died in rain-related incidents on Sunday, the death toll has risen to 54 since the onset of the monsoon on June 24, according to the state emergency operation centre. In another incident, a person was buried alive following a landslide in Katiyan tehsil of Chamba on Saturday night. A girl was buried alive as a huge amount of debris swept by rainwater fell on her house in Rajhana village on the outskirts of Shimla city. Another elderly woman was reportedly trapped under the debris and rescue operations were on, officials said. Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu appealed to the people to avoid venturing out in heavy rains, especially near rivers and nallahs, and remain vigilant. As many as 280 persons were stranded in different parts of the state. About 200 persons were stranded in Chandratal in Lahaul and Spiti. Superintendent of Police Mayank Chaudhary, who is on the spot, said that all the people are safe and food and essential medicines have been arranged. They would be rescued soon as the road is restored, he said. Commuters in about 60 vehicles were struck near Sadhupul in Solan district due to a landslide. The next few days... The Himachal Pradesh Government has closed all the government and private schools and colleges affiliated with the state for two days (July 10 and 11). In an office order issued here, Director of the Higher Education Department Amarjeet Sharma said that the schools affiliated with ICSE, CBSE and other boards can take decisions regarding closing schools at their own level. As many as 765 roads including five National Highways have been closed to traffic while 1,743 transformers and 138 water supply schemes were affected. The national highways blocked included NH-21 Mandi to Kullu, NH-505 Gramphu to Locar, NH-03 Kullu to Manali, NH-305 Aut to Jalori and NH-707 Rohru to Poanta Sahib near Shillai in Sirmaur district. National Highway 21 is blocked at 6 Mile. This is the same place where the commuters were struck for almost 24 hours on June 27 last due to a landslide. Mandi-Kullu road via Kamand was also blocked near Ghoda farm. The Manali-Chandigarh also caved in near Manali. Deputy Commissioner of Kullu Ashutosh Garg said the Kullu-Manali road is blocked at several places due to landslides. Beas River is in spate near Ramshela and traffic has been halted from Kullu to Manali and Manali to Atal Tunnel. "It's raining since last night and all roads are closed", said Rohit, a Kangra resident stuck in Kullu. "The roads have caved in trees and poles are falling. The site is quite frightening," he said. The Mandi police have asked the tourists stranded in Balh and Sundernagar to find accommodations as all roads leading to Kullu from Mandi are blocked and are expected to open Monday afternoon. All the rivers and nullas in Mandi district are in spate as the water level in Beas has increased. The Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) authorities have opened all five gates at Pandoh Dam and a flood-like situation is prevailing. Low-lying areas are being evacuated and the Chakki Bridge at NH-154 (Pathankot-Mandi) has been closed for vehicular movement, said DC Kangra Nipun Jindal. The relief, rescue and restoration operations were severely hit as heavy rains continued throughout the day. However, the district administration, and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams rescued five persons trapped in the middle of Beas River in Charu in Kullu district. Thirty college students stranded between Gramphu and Chota Dharra on Sundo-kaza-Gramphu (National Highway 505) following a roadblock due to landslide and flash floods at several places were rescued by the Lahaul and Spiti authorities on Saturday night. All the trains between UNESCO heritage Shimla and Kalka track have been cancelled as landslides and fallen trees blocked the railway track at many places. Water also entered the powerhouse of Largi dam in Kullu and Chaba Power House. Shimla water supply to Shimla and Solan would be affected due to high turbidity in the water sources, officials said. Nangal Dam at Bilaspur received 282.5mm rain followed by Una 275 mm, Nahan 222 mm, Dalhousie 212, Chamba 203 mm, Dhaulakuan 205 mm, Dharamsala 181 mm, Dehra Gopipur 175.4 mm, Kangra 168 mm, Narkanda 143 mm, Mandi 139 mm, Shimla 134 mm, Manali and Bilaspur 131 mm each, Sundernagar 127 mm and Mashobra and 121 mm. Officials said the Jal Shakti Vibhag and PWD have suffered a loss of Rs 500 crores.

Joshi had lodged a complaint with the police alleging harassment of his niece on July 16 and was shot at around 10.30 pm on Monday near his home in Vijay Nagar area, according to officials. Yes, he (Vikram Joshi) is no more. He passed away at around 4 am during treatment at the hospital, a family member told PTI.Joshi, who worked with a local daily, was admitted to a private hospital. So far, nine people have been arrested in connection with the case, according to the police. Joshi was hospitalised after he was shot at by some assailants near his home on Tuesday (July 21). Joshi was returning home in Vijay Nagar area with his two daughters on a motorcycle when he was waylaid by over half a dozen armed men at around 10.30 pm on Monday, officials said. The journalist was shot in the head by one of the accused, who then fled the spot, leaving him severely injured. He was taken to a hospital where he is in a critical condition, they said. The attack comes days after Vikram Joshi, who works with a local daily, lodged a complaint at the local Vijay Nagar police post against some people for harassing his niece on July 16. Senior Superintendent of Police, Ghaziabad, Kalanidhi Naithani said nine people, including two of the three named in the FIR, have been arrested while the local police post in-charge was suspended in the wake of the incident. The FIR was registered under Indian Penal Code sections 307 (attempted murder), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 34 (act done by several people with a common intention) on complaint by Joshi's brother Aniket Joshi, Naithani said. The FIR had three named suspects Chhotu, Akash Bihari and Ravi besides some unidentified people. Chhotu and Ravi have been arrested, while searches are underway to nab Akash and six police teams are working on the case, he added. The police have also arrested Mohit, Dalbir, Akash, Yogendra, Abhishek, Abhishek and Shaqir based on evidence in connection with the case, Naithani added. In his complaint lodged at the Vijay Nagar police post, Joshi had named Chhotu, Ravi and Akash, his family alleged. The journalist was given a life threat by the accused men, according to the allegations made in the FIR. The family has alleged inadequate action by the local police post in-charge, who has been suspended with immediate effect considering the gravity of the matter. A departmental inquiry has been ordered and the local Circle Officer will probe the matter, SSP Naithani said. Meanwhile, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra attacked the Uttar Pradesh government over the law-and-order situation in the state following the incident. "Ghaziabad falls in NCR. A journalist was shot at because he complained to the police against molestation of his niece. How will common man feel safe in such a jungle raj," she said in a tweet in Hindi. Vikram Joshi, the Ghaziabad-based Journalist who was shot in the head, passes away

Imagine you get a notice from the <keyword id="65338" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Income-Tax-Department">Income Tax department</keyword>, out of the blue, stating that you own 4 companies and have to pay taxes due worth over Rs 5.4 crore. Such an outlandish shock was faced in reality by Ravi Jaiswal, a 32-year-old office assistant from Ganesh Deval Nagar <keyword id="6367743" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="slums">slums</keyword> in Bhayander (west), when he received a notice from the <keyword id="6354751" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Income-Tax">Income Tax</keyword> department: To <keyword id="589132" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="pay-tax">pay tax</keyword> dues of over Rs 5.4 crore! According to the notice, he owned four companies. 
 
He immediately approached Thane superintendent of police Mahesh Patil who directed a probe after examining his financial status. 
 The investigation revealed that Jaiswal's PAN and Aadhaar cards were used to start four bogus companies—Shayansh Corporation, Gem Redtech, State Ford Textiles and Purvi Realty— <keyword id="3876262" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="post-demonetisation">post-demonetisation</keyword>. 
 
Jaiswal told police that when he joined the firm of Kandivli-based chartered accountant Rajesh Agrawal in 2008, he was asked to submit his PAN and Aadhaar cards to open a bank account, but he got his salary in cash. In 2012, he left Agrawal and joined another firm. 
 
After further investigation, Bhayander police on Saturday arrested Agrawal (42), his former business partner Rajeev Gupta (30) and his two employees, Juglesh Gupta (25) and Santosh Singh (32), for allegedly starting four bogus companies in Jaiswal's name to launder money. They have been sent to police custody by a Thane court. 
 
According to police sources, Agrawal, a resident of Evershine Millennium Paradise, Thakur village, Kandivli (east), opened two bank accounts in Jaiswal's name post demonetisation by forging his signature. Rajeev, a Bhayander resident who had asked Jaiswal to join Agrawal's firm, left the firm in 2012 and started a gas agency. Police suspect that Juglesh and Santosh had done the paperwork for starting the bogus companies. 
 
Police raided Agrawal's Malad office and seized a hard disk, documents and fake government rubber stamps. Police have learnt that they had started two more such companies.

This is a third COVID-19 case where the patient has a connection with Dharavi, considered to be Asia’s biggest slum with a high population density. An official of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation said a doctor who had a clinic on Dharavi’s main road and who was also attached as a surgeon to a prominent private hospital tested positive for the virus. “The building where he lives will be quarantined, and all high-risk contacts will be traced,” the BMC official said. Bihar reports five new Coronavirus cases; total at 29 Five people tested positive for COVID-19 in Bihar on Thursday, taking the total number of cases in the state to 29, an official said. According to state epidemiologist Ragini Mishra, two women from Gaya, the wife and the mother of a coronavirus patient with travel history to Dubai, and as many men from Gopalganj, both of whom returned from the Middle East recently, tested positive. Hospital staff complain against Jamaat members’ ‘obscene behaviour’ Following complaints of “objectionable behaviour” by many members of Tablighi Jamaat -- in some instances singing obscene songs before the nursing staff — a joint probe by Ghaziabad police chief and Additional District Magistrate has been ordered. In a complaint, some Tablighi followers who were rounded up and taken by bus to Ghaziabad on Tuesday-Wednesday for a medical check-up after they had been to the Markaz headquarters — said to be the new coronavirus epicentre in the national capital — allegedly spat on police personnel and government officials. A section of staff in Ghaziabad-based M M G Government Hospital wrote in a complaint on Wednesday to the Chief Medical Superintendent that “many Jamaat members admitted in the isolation ward of the hospital were misbehaving with the employees and the nursing staff”. The Jamaat members, many of whom are corona suspects, were seen roaming around semi-nude in front of female nursing staff and singing obscene songs, the complaint said. This is part of a precautionary protocol adopted by the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS), an autonomous institute under the Union ministry of health and family welfare. The protocol, drawn up following a direction from the state government on Thursday, will be in force until the COVID-19 pandemic is over, NEIGRIHMS Director DM Thappa said. “Only critically ill non-COVID19 patients certified by the state health authorities concerned can seek treatment at the NEIGRIHMS, and only one attendant will be allowed to accompany the patient. However, such a person will have to be quarantined for 14 days as per government directives,” Thappa said.
