<ul class="summary-list"><li>Pop star <keyword id="365825" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Lizzo">Lizzo</keyword> faced backlash this week on social media for sharing a video of her recent 10-day smoothie <keyword id="870495" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="cleanse">cleanse</keyword>.</li><li>Critics claimed Lizzo, who is known for her messages of body positivity, was promoting <keyword id="6358230" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="diet">diet</keyword> culture. </li><li>The singer responded by clarifying that she never mentioned weight loss, and noted how people with larger bodies are subjected to public scrutiny and judgment.   </li></ul><p>Lizzo is trending on social media again, but not for the body positivity she's typically renowned for. </p><p>This time, critics claim that the singer famous for celebrating her body - and encouraging fans to do the same - is promoting diet culture.</p><p>The pop star posted a recent video of her 10-day smoothie cleanse.</p><p>Some expressed a concern that Lizzo's actions would contribute to pressure on her fans to lose weight with crash diets. </p><p>The star said she did the cleanse after a particularly rough month in November, which involved a lot of drinking, spicy food, and other digestive upsets. </p><p>In a series of TikTok posts, Lizzo clarified that she tried the smoothie regimen to "reset" her digestion after a rough month in November.</p><p>"I feel amazing, and it's great to just reset your stomach, especially when you deal with gastrointestinal issues like I do. But I think I look ****ing great too," she said. </p> <p>Regardless, Lizzo said, what she does with her body is her business, not anyone else's. </p><p>"Every big girl should do whatever the f*** they want with their bodies," she said. </p><h2>Lizzo's cleanse involved green juices and vegan protein</h2><p>Per Lizzo's initial video on the cleanse, the 10-day program involves a lot of green juice, superfood smoothies, and supplements, but also includes foods like apples, peanut butter, vegetables, nuts, and vegan protein, along with plenty of water. </p><p>The cleanse is based on a program from <a href="https://www.jjsmithonline.com">nutritionist J.J. Smith</a>, who wrote a best-selling book on the plan. While the plan does advertise weight and fat loss, it also cites other benefits such as better digestion, more energy, and building good eating habits by avoiding junk food. </p><p>According to Lizzo, the smoothie cleanse improved her sleep, her hydration, her mental wellbeing, her skin, as well as her body (although again, without any reference to weight).  </p><p>"I feel and look like a bad b***h. That's it," she said. "I got exactly what I wanted out of it."</p><h2><strong>The backlash showcases a double standard for people with larger bodies</strong></h2><p>As an advocate for loving bodies of all sizes, Lizzo has previously been criticized for "promoting obesity." Now, she's being criticized for, as some commenters felt, promoting weight loss.</p><p>In her response, Lizzo said this is a double standard that only exists for people with larger bodies in the media and popular culture.</p><p>She said would normally feel "afraid and ashamed" to post about things like a smoothie cleanse out of fear that it would be misinterpreted. "I feel like, as a big girl, people just expect that if you are doing something for <keyword id="6354750" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="health">health</keyword>, you're doing it for a dramatic weight loss and that is not the case," she said in the TikTok video.</p><p>Her experience echoes that of British pop singer Adele, who was alternately praised and condemned for <a href="https://www.insider.com/is-it-ever-ok-to-compliment-celebrate-weight-loss-2020-5">her apparent weight loss in photos posted to social media last spring</a>. In Lizzo's case, part of the backlash came from white women. Lizzo responds to criticism of her recent smoothie cleanse: 'Every big girl should do whatever the f*** they want with their bodies'

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Supplements are hugely popular, but most people can get the nutrients they need from food. </li><li>We asked two dietitians which supplements they think are a waste of money.</li></ul><p>Supplements are sold in every grocery store and pharmacy, and pushed by influencers on social media, but <a href="https://news.northwestern.edu/stories/2022/06/vitamins-supplements-are-a-waste-of-money-for-most-americans/">research shows</a> they are a waste of money for most people who can get all the nutrients they need from food.</p><p><a href="https://www.healthwithhannaht.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Hannah Thompson</a>, a registered dietitian nutritionist, told Insider: "there are very few <a href="https://www.insider.com/guides/health/diet-nutrition/best-time-to-take-vitamins">supplements</a> that I recommend. I believe in a <a href="https://www.insider.com/i-tracked-my-diet-get-nutrients-food-supplements-2022-11">food-first approach</a> where supplements are a last resort if someone is unable to meet a certain nutrition need through food alone."</p><p>She said: "Generally speaking, it is best to get nutrients from food rather than supplements. Not only does the body absorb and digest them better this way, but it will often be more affordable, and a meal or snack is way more satisfying."</p><p><a href="https://www.abbeyskitchen.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Registered dietitian Abbey Sharp</a> chimed with Thompson, and told Insider: "There can be great benefit to a carefully planned supplement regimen based on your unique needs. But unfortunately, a lot of popular influencer-backed supplements aren't evidence based or aren't useful for most people."</p><p>Here are six supplements that Sharp and Thompson think aren't worth the money, and four that Sharp recommended for certain people.</p><h2><strong>Greens powders</strong></h2><p>These <a href="https://www.insider.com/guides/health/diet-nutrition/enso-superfood-supergreens-powder-review">powders</a> contain vitamins and minerals, and are designed to be dissolved into water or juice.</p><p>Thompson explained that the ingredients in greens powders that promise to<a href="https://www.insider.com/high-protein-diet-could-boost-metabolism-and-fat-loss-study-2020-11"> boost the metabolism</a>, support the immune system, and <a href="https://www.insider.com/foods-that-can-make-you-less-bloated-2018-7">reduce bloating</a> can all be found in everyday meals. If you're eating any fresh, canned, or frozen produce, greens powders won't add anything extra to your diet because produce naturally contains all the vitamins you need.</p><h2><strong>Sea moss</strong></h2><p>People rave about sea moss, which is a type of algae or seaweed, as a superfood on TikTok for improving skin and helping muscles heal. But <a href="https://www.insider.com/superfoods-what-are-they-science-marketing-2018-12">"superfood" is a vague term</a> that doesn't guarantee nutritional value.</p><p>The nutritional content of sea moss depends hugely on where it is grown. It can also be contaminated with heavy metals if it absorbs water containing them, and contain too much iodine, which can be detrimental to your health, according to Thompson. Iodine is important for health, but very high levels can cause stomach pain, diarrhea, and even thyroid cancer, <a href="https://ods.od.nih.gov/factsheets/Iodine-Consumer/#:~:text=High%20iodine%20intakes%20can%20also,%3B%20weak%20pulse%3B%20and%20coma." target="_blank" rel="noopener">according to the National Institutes of Health</a>.</p><h2><strong>Vitamin C</strong></h2><p>Sharp said that vitamin C supplements are completely useless for the vast majority of people. "If you consume just one cup of strawberries, that will give you<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-get-essential-vitamins-and-nutrients-2016-3?_gl=1*17s50gp*_ga*MTE3MTg3NzM2Ni4xNjg3Nzc2Nzc5*_ga_E21CV80ZCZ*MTY4OTI0NDcyNC41NS4xLjE2ODkyNDkyMDUuMy4wLjA.#vitamin-c-instead-of-oranges-try-strawberries-red-peppers-or-broccoli-1"> all the vitamin C you need</a> for the day, and anything more than that just gets peed out," she said.</p><h2><strong>Biotin</strong></h2><p>Biotin is a type of B vitamin that is taken for hair loss. "Despite biotin being in every hair supplement formula, there isn't any strong evidence to suggest it actually<a href="https://www.insider.com/guides/health/treatments/best-hair-growth-products"> helps hair growth</a> in most healthy adults," said Sharp.</p><h2><strong>Anti-bloat supplements</strong></h2><p>There <em>are</em> some good supplement formulas and herb mixes that can help with bloating, Sharp said, but most are just mild laxatives and so don't actually<a href="https://www.insider.com/guides/health/diet-nutrition/how-to-get-rid-of-bloating"> address the reasons why bloating occurs in the first place</a>. This might be from gassiness from lots of fiber or fizzy drinks, constipation, hormones, or irritable bowel syndrome.</p><h2><strong>Detox supplements</strong></h2><p><a href="https://www.insider.com/detox-health-effects-benefits-science-2017-1">Detox</a> supplements often come in capsules. However, <a href="https://www.insider.com/guides/health/diet-nutrition/do-detoxes-work">the body doesn't need help detoxing</a> as that is the job of kidneys, liver, and GI tract.</p><p>Sharp said most detox supplements are "just laxatives or diuretics, which sure help to support our body's natural detox mechanisms (pooping and peeing), but there are way more pleasant and nutritious ways to do this – just drink water and eat fiber!"</p><h2><strong>Supplements that are useful if you can't get nutrients from your diet:</strong></h2><p>According to Sharp:</p><ul><li><a href="https://www.insider.com/guides/health/diet-nutrition/best-vitamin-d-supplements">Vitamin D3</a> supplements can provide the benefits of Vitamin D, which we mostly get from exposure to the sun, without the risk of UV damage.</li><li><a href="https://www.insider.com/guides/health/diet-nutrition/vitamin-b12-benefits">Vitamin B12</a> helps keep your blood and nerve cells healthy and is mostly found in meat, eggs, and dairy, so vegans and vegetarians should take this supplement if they aren't getting enough in their diets.</li><li><a href="https://www.insider.com/guides/health/diet-nutrition/omega-3-benefits">Omega 3</a> helps with heart health, but is hard to get unless a person eats lots of fatty fish. It can counterbalance the excess omega 6 that we typically get through ultra processed foods, which can cause inflammation.</li><li><a href="https://www.insider.com/guides/health/diet-nutrition/high-fiber-foods">Fiber</a>. Adults should aim to consume between 25g and 38g of fiber daily, but most don't. There are a variety of types with different benefits, but Sharp recommended partially hydrolyzed<a href="https://www.insider.com/guides/health/diet-nutrition/weight-loss-supplements#7.-guar-gum"> guar gum</a> or psyllium fiber for those worried about bloating.</li></ul>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>The British Dietetic Association has shared nine red flags to look out for in new year diets.</li><li>Avoid diets that promise rapid weight loss or claim they will "detox" you, the BDA said.</li></ul><p>The British Dietetic Association has shared a list of <a href="https://www.bda.uk.com/uploads/assets/648c1ece-19a5-4965-804fb5ae0c4bc4f8/NYNYNTY-public-graphic-1-A4-PDF.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">nine diet red flags</a> people should beware of when looking to improve their nutrition and health in 2023 and beyond.</p><p>The body of registered dietitians is encouraging people to say "no thank you" to fad diets that are often promoted around <a href="https://www.insider.com/timeline-of-the-sober-curious-movement-2022-12">New Year's Eve</a> because many of them aren't sustainable and lead to yoyo dieting, muscle loss, nutrient deficiencies, and <a href="https://www.insider.com/truth-about-starvation-mode-and-weight-loss-2020-5">metabolic adaptation</a>, which can lead to more weight gain in the future.</p><p>"For many people the new year is a good opportunity to set goals and intentions, including to improve health. A magic bullet for weight loss</h2><p>If a diet claims to offer a magic bullet that will result in weight loss without any real lifestyle change, it's likely a fad and to be avoided, the BDA said.</p><h2>2. Rapid weight loss</h2><p>If a diet promises drastic weight loss in a short period of time, it's likely to be <a href="https://www.insider.com/how-to-stop-quitting-healthy-diet-stay-on-track-weight-loss-2021-4">unsustainable</a>. The BDA said to avoid anything that claims you will lose more than two pounds of body fat per week.</p><h2>3. The word 'detox'</h2><p>Supposed detox diets like <a href="https://www.insider.com/juice-cleanses-ruin-your-bodys-natural-detox-powers-2021-7">juice "cleanses"</a> can lead to nutrient deficiencies and are unnecessary because our bodies detox naturally via the kidney and liver, as <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/detox-health-effects-benefits-science-2017-1?r=US&amp;IR=T">Insider's Erin Brodwin reported</a>. </p><h2>4. 'Fat-burning' foods</h2><p>Some diets claim certain foods, like grapefruit or green tea extract, will burn fat, but this isn't true, the BDA said. The only way to lose fat is to eat in a <a href="https://www.insider.com/weight-loss-work-out-eat-calorie-deficit-not-losing-fat-2022-4">calorie deficit</a>, consuming less energy than your body burns over the course of the day.</p><h2>8. Severely limiting entire food groups</h2><p>If a diet tells you to cut entire <a href="https://www.insider.com/should-you-track-macros-and-calories-to-lose-weight-healthily-2020-7">macronutrients</a> like carbs or fat, or specific foods like bread or chocolate, it may not only be unbalanced from a nutrition perspective but could also be too restrictive to maintain. Banning foods can make you more likely to crave them and less likely to stick to your diet, <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/22306437/" rel="">research</a> suggests. </p><h2>9. Influencer promotion</h2><p>If an influencer is being paid to promote a diet, be skeptical as they might only be doing so for the fee. <p>Proponents of the savory solution claim it does everything from <a href="http://paleoleap.com/eat-this-bone-broth/">draw out toxins</a> to <a href="http://draxe.com/the-healing-power-of-bone-broth-for-digestion-arthritis-and-cellulite/">sooth digestion</a> and <a href="http://www.hollywoodhomestead.com/bone-broth-botox-alternative/">erase wrinkles</a>. New Yorkers are <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/the-quaint-economy-bone-broth-trend-2014-11">shelling out up to $9</a> for to-go cups of the stuff.</p>
<p>In reality, the seemingly magical elixir is really just plain old broth with one added detail: <a href="http://www.lovingourguts.com/the-difference-between-bone-broth-and-meat-broth-or-stock/">the bones used to make it are slow-roasted</a>, a process that's supposed to draw out nutrients.</p>
<p>But do a few extra hours of cooking and fresh ingredients make this stuff worth $9? We took a look at all of the purported benefits of bone broth so you can decide before you sip.</p>
<h3><strong>1. Detoxing</strong></h3>
<p class="p2">Bone broth fans say it helps rid the body of harmful toxins, the type that supposedly build up over a night of drinking or months of eating too much processed food.</p>
<p>Thankfully for us, our bodies come pre-equipped with their own natural detox system. While our <a href="http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/kidneydiseases.html">kidneys</a> filter our blood and remove any wastes from our diet, our <a href="http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/liverdiseases.html">liver</a> processes medications and detoxifies any chemicals we ingest. Paired together, our bodies are natural cleansing powerhouses.</p>
<p>"Unless there's a blockage in one of these organs that do it day and night, there's absolutely no need to help the body get rid of toxins," family physician Ranit Mishori of the Georgetown University School of Medicine, who <a href="http://www.jfponline.com/Pages.asp?AID=9783">has spent years reviewing the medical literature on cleanses</a>, <a href="http://www.npr.org/blogs/thesalt/2012/02/15/146927835/can-a-diet-clean-out-toxins-in-the-body">told NPR</a>.</p>
<h3><strong>2. Getting Back To Our Roots </strong></h3>

While there is <a href="http://www.npr.org/blogs/thesalt/2013/02/06/171104410/stone-age-stew-soup-making-may-be-older-than-wed-thought">limited evidence that early humans cooked food in containers</a> - either inside holes in the ground or early versions of pots - there's no proof that they used them even to make soup, let alone as specific a concoction as bone broth.</p>
<p><span style="background-color: #ffffff;">Our paleolithic predecessors probably did cook bones, but </span><span style="background-color: #ffffff;">the broth wasn't their main goal. "I was not aware that 'bone broths' became recently popular," Claire St-Germain, who manages the bone library at the Université de Montréal and studied bone broths for her anthropology masters, told us in an email. "Their main goal was the grease production."</span></p>
