"The Legos I used I was trying to recreate the spaceships from the movie. That's the standout."</p><p>Born and raised near Toronto, Director X said he was always a visual person. Around the time he was being amazed by the "Star Wars" saga, he was also running around with his friends in the neighborhood shooting little movies with a video camera. They are crafted by X with polished production design and his trademark opening and closing of the videos with the horizontal or vertical frames of the shot, expanding to reveal the shot and closing in until the screen goes black.<p>Now X is getting his chance at a studio movie, as he's director of the reboot of the Blaxploitation classic, "Superfly" (in theaters).</p><p>The plot points are similar to the original movie (1972 "<a href="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0069332/?ref_=nv_sr_2" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Super Fly</a>") - a cocaine dealer named Priest (played by Ron O'Neal in the original movie and Trevor Jackson in the reboot) is out for one last major score - but the new version tweaked it to give it more of a 2018 feel. Instead of being set in New York City, it's in Atlanta (the generous tax credit for shooting movies in the state of Georgia may have also motivated this change), and instead of the cops providing Priest with the massive amounts of cocaine to sell, like in the original, a Mexican cartel is the distributor.</p><p>These changes and the injection of hip-hop in the movie (the soundtrack was produced by artist Future) make it an experience at the multiplex that is extremely entertaining.</p><p>As X put it, "If you don't know the song the cop is singing when he pulls Freddy over, you shouldn't be seeing the film." He was referring to when one of the members of Priest's crew is pulled over and, while the police search his car, the officer sings Chamillionaire's anthem, "<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CtwJvgPJ9xw" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Ridin'</a>."&#xa0;</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5b27bc4c1ae66253008b4fe4-1225/superfly%20sony%20final.jpg" border="0" alt="Superfly Sony final" data-mce-source="Sony"><p class="source"><span>Sony</span></p><p class="caption">Trevor Jackson in "Superfly."</p></img></div><p></p></div></div><p>But even with the movie's playfulness, X sprinkles in moments of seriousness. One gang leader dies at the end of a car chase by crashing into a Confederate statue, which is a nod to the string of monuments celebrating Confederate figures being torn down last summer around the country. And at the end of the movie, Priest has a fight with a cop, pummeling him with his martial-arts moves. It's a moment that isn't just borrowed from the original movie, but a recognition of Black Lives Matter.</p><p>"No one is under the illusion that what's been happening lately is a new occurrence," X said of police violence. "The original 'Superfly' was a moment of revenge, even if it's a fantasy, you got to feel it. So this movie I feel is the same way. It's a fun ride but really it's the moment of fantasy to see somebody get their f---ing deserved a-- whipping."</p><p>For X, the release of "Superfly" is a landmark moment in his career, as he ascends to a new level in filmmaking.</p><p>But he's seen firsthand that it all can change drastically. One of his biggest mentors is legendary music video director <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hype_Williams" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Hype Williams</a>. Like X today, he was behind the most ambitious videos by the biggest artists in the late 1990s (The Notorious B.I.G.'s "<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gUhRKVIjJtw" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Mo Money Mo Problems,</a>" Will Smith's "<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3JcmQONgXJM" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Gettin' Jiggy Wit It,</a>" TLC's "<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FrLequ6dUdM" target="_blank" rel="noopener">No Scrubs</a>") and early 2000s (Jay-Z's "<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cgoqrgc_0cM" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Big Pimpin'</a>," Kanye West's "<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PsO6ZnUZI0g" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Stronger</a>").</p><p>At one point, it was Williams (along with fellow music video director <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alan_Ferguson_(director)" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Alan Ferguson</a>) who gave X the pep talk he needed to stay in the business after a rough day of shooting on his first music video, in which he said "he got walked on" by everyone on the set.</p><p>"Hype's main thing was that voice that you hear that you suck is the enemy and you can't listen to it," X recalled. Starring Nas and DMX, its highly stylized story of the drug game became a cult classic and a beloved work for many in the hip-hop community. But Williams has never since gotten another feature film made. X absorbed what Williams went through. He also built an understanding of how to work collaboratively with corporate executives over the years through countless music videos and commercial shoots, and seems destined to handle working for Hollywood better than Williams has.<p>Comparing himself in some moments to a chef and in others to a mercenary, either way X is making the point that he sees his job as completing a project using the blueprint formed already - whether by a marketing executive, screenwriter, or producer.</p><p>"Joel Silver has been trying to make 'Superfly' for 20 years, so who the f--- am I to take it out of his hands and act like it's mine," X said. "Studio pictures definitely have a lot of things flying around and the idea that the director is the one sole creative decision-making source is not real. It took me a long time to get that balance versus my vision."</p><p>X pointed out that a sequence at the end of "Superfly," where a flashback scene is used to drive home the connection Priest has with his mentor Scatter (Michael Kenneth Williams), exists because of note from the studio. Going forward, X sees his experience on Madison Avenue benefitting him greatly in Hollywood.</p><p>Going back to that chef analogy -</p><p>"This is the job, you are getting hired to prepare a meal, in a sense," he said. "As a director you are in the kitchen cooking it up and if they ask for a steak you better bring them a steak. 'Superfly' director on how making music videos for Drake and Rihanna taught him how to thrive in the Hollywood studio system

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Everyone in The Rock's family, even his own mother, would love to see him return to WWE.</li><li>That's according to WWE superstar Tamina, who is also The Rock's cousin.</li></ul><p><a href="https://www.insider.com/category/the-rock" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Rock</a>'s family would love to see "The Great One" <a href="https://www.insider.com/the-rock-and-daughter-simone-johnson-should-compete-wrestlemania-38-2022-8">return to the ring</a>, <a href="https://www.insider.com/category/wwe" target="_blank" rel="noopener">WWE</a> star Tamina told Insider this week.</p><p>"All of us, <a href="https://www.insider.com/dwayne-the-rock-johnson-mom-dream-home-2022-6">including his mama</a>, want him to come back," Tamina said. "I feel like everybody wants him to return."</p><p>The 45-year-old competitor, who performs for the Raw brand, is a one-time WWE women's tag team champion.</p><p>As the daughter of Jimmy 'Superfly' Snuka, Tamina is a second-generation wrestler, and is The Rock's cousin. She is also related to The Usos.</p><p>She told Insider that wrestling, competing, and performing under the bright lights for the industry's flagship brand WWE "is something that you don't lose."</p><p>Tamina said: "It's what you were made to do, and born to do. Wrestling is a love."</p><h2>Tamina started wrestling because of The Rock's influence</h2><div type="image" title="WWE superstar Tamina." height="563" width="1000" msid="98216065" hostid="261"></div><p>Tamina said she didn't realize it at the time, but she was bitten by the wrestling bug at "a very, very young age" — and it's all because of The Rock, whose real name is Dwayne Johnson.</p><p>Growing up with so many family members in pro wrestling, it would become second nature for a young Tamina to play in the rings before the show started, and to run around the stadiums. "That was our life, our normal, and was our fun," she said.</p><p>"Dwayne's a huge mentor, you know, because when I first started, it was because of him," Tamina told Insider. "He's a huge example."</p><p>She continued: "The way he is in interviews, that's really him — he's really that funny person. He's that loving man, that husband, and <a href="https://www.insider.com/dwayne-johnson-youngest-daughter-the-rock-empowering-video-2020-3">he is that father</a>. Like, his girls are crazy about their dad.</p><p>"You see him as a character, you see him as a superstar at WWE. It's all these different things, but he's an entrepreneur. He could probably become the <a href="https://www.insider.com/dwayne-the-rock-johnson-stokes-rumors-presidential-run-jimmy-fallon-2019-8">next president for crying out loud</a>, and I'm proud of him.</p><p>"You can never repay anybody back for any of that for the kind of love that they show you."</p><p>The Rock even surprised Tamina last year by gifting her with a house, and a vehicle.</p><p>In an Instagram post, <a href="https://www.insider.com/dwayne-johnson-highest-grossing-movies-the-rock-2022-10">The Rock</a> can be seen leading Tamina into the property, and as he unveiled the gift to her, she appeared to break down in tears.</p><p>"She deserves a lot more," he said in a tweet at the time. It's been a good journey."</p><h2>The Rock's rivalry with John Cena is the subject of an upcoming A&amp;E documentary</h2><div type="image" title="The Rock and John Cena in WWE." height="1331" width="2000" msid="98216067" hostid="261"></div><p>From "Stone Cold" Steve Austin to Triple-H, The Rock had many adversaries in the squared circle.</p><p>However, one of his most iconic, long-running battles was with John Cena.</p><p>Their feud is the subject of an upcoming episode of WWE Rivals on A&amp;E, and it was one that was "awesome to be able to watch back, and know I was there at that time, too, living through that moment," Tamina said.</p><p>She recalled their whole rivalry was so captivating that it "made the whole world watch their magic" and hearkened back to the era of Hulk Hogan and Andre "The Giant."</p><p>"You go back to those days, those magical moments of people who face off because you have to have a great one, and another great one … and then when they battle with all this charisma," she said.<br /><br />WWE Rivals returned for its second season on Sunday, February 19. The Rock's family would love to see him return to the ring, says cousin and WWE star Tamina

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="44434" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="taxi" source="Orion">Taxi</keyword> cabs hailed through <a href="https://gocurb.com/about/">Curb</a> saw a whopping 152% increase between April and July in NYC.</li><li>Average ride prices for <keyword id="11956945" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="taxis" source="Orion">taxis</keyword> dropped in NYC, while fares for <keyword id="1042120" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="uber" source="Orion">Uber</keyword> and <keyword id="11912664" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="lyft" source="Orion">Lyft</keyword> have increased.</li><li>Curb vice president Jason Gross said better tech is helping taxis catch up to gig economy companies.</li></ul><p>New York City taxis are coming to dethrone Uber and Lyft from e-hailing dominance.</p><p>Cabs hailed through <a href="https://gocurb.com/about/">Curb</a>, a mobile app hailing cabs and paying fares, saw a whopping 152% increase between April and July 2021 in NYC, and monthly average downloads off the app are up 70% this year compared to 2018, according to Curb data reviewed by Insider. </p><p>The number of people booking taxis through the app is growing at a faster rate than those booking Ubers and Lyfts, according to data from <a href="https://www.superfly.com/">Superfly Insights</a>. Curb roughly doubled its user numbers between the first and second quarters of 2021, while Uber and Lyft only increased by about one-third. </p><div type="image" title="Curb taxi data in NYC" height="550" width="1787" msid="85669695" hostid="261"></div><p>Curb's recent popularity could stem from surging prices for Uber and Lyft. The average ride price for an Uber or Lyft increased to $27 from $22 between January to June of this year, according to data from Superfly.</p><p>Curb, meanwhile, has seen average ride prices between January and June drop to $13.63 in 2021 from $16.46 in 2020 and $16.89 in 2019. More than half of Lyft and Uber drivers <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/uber-lyft-driver-numbers-below-pre-pandemic-levels-gridwise-chart-2021-4">stopped driving during the COVID-19 pandemic</a>, per an analysis by Insider's Tom Dotan, and the number of drivers across the country in March 2021 was 35% lower than in January 2021.</p><p>Jason Gross, vice president and head of mobile at Curb, said hailing a taxi through a phone is oftentimes faster than finding one on the street. The company has implemented changes to improve its ride-hailing service and ramped up marketing for the platform over the last year, he said.</p><p>Because of cabs' lower prices, Gross said the platform also benefited from its inclusion in <a href="https://transitapp.com/">Transit</a>, a New York City <keyword id="11894924" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="transportation" source="Orion">transportation</keyword> app that compares prices between ride-hailing, taxis, and other forms of transportation. </p><h2><div type="image" title="smartphone app Curb shows taxis nearby" height="6411" width="3988" msid="85669698" hostid="261"></div></h2><p>"I feel like [gig economy companies] haven't succeeded in driving the entire industry out of business," Gross told Insider regarding the taxi industry. "A lot of people said these gig economy companies transformed the industry through the use of technology, but what they really did is they created an unrealistic market."</p><p>Gross added hailing a taxi offers customers benefits they can't get from Lyft or Uber, other than slightly lower fares.</p><p>Curb also allows drivers to see the amount of money they will earn from a trip upfront. Lyft does not begin calculating driver earnings until <a href="https://help.lyft.com/hc/e/articles/115013080008-How-and-when-driver-pay-is-calculated">one minute after arriving</a> at a destination, and Uber calculates earnings on a <a href="https://help.uber.com/driving-and-delivering/article/how-do-i-receive-my-earnings?nodeId=42973e65-45a8-4aaf-90d5-d3e97ab61267">weekly cycle</a>.</p><p>Gross said taxi drivers have thanked Curb for allowing them to win back business from Lyft, Uber, and other competitors.</p><p>"In general, I feel the perception is we're a more trustworthy company to deal with because we're not rapidly changing and gamifying what they earn or don't earn from minute-to-minute or day-to-day," Gross said.</p>

The weeks are numbered from the start of the year, with week 13 ending Sunday, March 29. </p><p>On March 19, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/uber-rides-could-slump-80-percent-coronavirus-costs-company-billions-2020-3">chief executive Dara Khosrowshahi told analysts that Uber bookings were down some 60% to 70% in "more recently impacted markets like Seattle,"</a> and noted the company was expecting a rebound to begin in the middle of the second quarter, roughly near the end of April. That date corresponds with the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-presser-extends-social-distancing-guidelines-until-april-30-2020-3">current extension of federal social-distancing guidelines announced by President Donald Trump on Sunday.</a></p><p>SuperFly did not release data for Lyft, but Wall Street analysts expect the company's financials could be hurt similarly. JPMorgan's Doug Anmuth last week modeled a 290 basis point reduction in 2021 EBITDA for Uber and 300 for Lyft.</p><p>"Importantly, we believe both Uber ($10B), and Lyft ($2.8B) have enough cash to survive the temporary business impact, and we don't anticipate capital raises," he said.</p><h2>Delivery could be both companies' savior</h2><p>On the analyst call, Uber said sign-ups by businesses in Seattle - the epicenter of the US' coronavirus outbreak at the time - had increased tenfold in the week prior to the call. New data shows Uber rides in the US have fallen up to 94% as the coronavirus pandemic upends travel, work, and the economy

The impact could be even greater on Lyft's second-quarter, with no meaningful uptick yet detected in SuperFly's data.</p><p><div type="image" title="Lyft data from SuperFly" height="1132" width="1832" msid="75582909" hostid="261"></div></p><p>And while Lyft doesn't have a delivery arm as large as Uber's to make up for some of the ride-hailing losses, its limited global footprint of only North America could prove to be a positive in the long run.</p><p>"As Uber is exposed to earlier-hit <keyword id="31671" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="markets">markets</keyword> in Europe and Asia, we expect demand for the company to have been more greatly impacted than Lyft in 1Q20E," Dan Ives of Wedbush told clients Wednesday. "Given Uber's greater exposure to business and airport travel use cases, we also expect that the company will see a relatively greater flow-through impact on revenue, with a Y/Y contraction of -41% in Rides revenue vs. -17% for Lyft."</p><p>In order to cut costs, Lyft <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/lyft-layoffs-17-percent-staff-furlough-hundreds-more-coronavirus-2020-4">announced in April it would lay off nearly 1,000 employees</a>, or roughly 17% of its total headcount. Executives and high-level employees are also taking pay cuts.</p><p>"It is now clear that the COVID-19 crisis is going to have broad-reaching implications for the economy, which impacts our business," CEO Logan Green said in a press release at the tine. "We have therefore made the difficult decision to reduce the size of our team. Our guiding principle for decision-making right now is to ensure we emerge from the crisis in the strongest possible position to achieve the company's mission."</p><p>On the call following Wednesday's <keyword id="6357061" type="SPONSORED" weightage="60" keywordseo="earnings">earnings</keyword> release, company leadership will likely be pressed for insight into the effect of such cost-cutting. Lyft's market value has been cut in half since February as the coronavirus pandemic catalyzed a larger market selloff.</p><p>"Uber and Lyft face Herculean-like challenges looking ahead as the new reality will likely change the business models of these companies (and competitors) for the foreseeable future," Ives said in his note to clients. Revenue per active rider, a closely watched metric in the industry, rose 19%. </p><p>Importantly, only the final few weeks of the quarter were impacted by the full force of the coronavirus, which has sent the company's main source of revenue into free fall. People are calling out Khloe Kardashian for her 'new face' after she debuted a radically different look on Instagram

<ul class="summary-list"><li>People were quick to respond to <keyword id="6373424" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="khloe-kardashian">Khloe Kardashian</keyword>'s recent selfie, saying it appears she had <keyword id="6397377" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="plastic-surgery">plastic surgery</keyword> and that her face looks much different than previous photos she's posted.</li><li>A plastic surgeon told Insider it appears she had a nose job or rhinoplasty, filler injections, and fat removal in her face.</li><li>It's impossible to say the exact procedures she had done and when, though, because of photo filters.</li></ul><p>When Khloe Kardashian shared a series of selfies on Instagram on May 22, followers were quick to point out that <a href="https://www.insider.com/khloe-kardashian-instagram-new-face-fan-reactions-2020-5">her face looked different than it did in previous posts</a>, and it appeared she's had some work done.</p><blockquote class="twitter-tweet blockquote" data-lang="en" data-cards="" data-conversation="">—superfly sister. "But we don't really know if she had her procedures done during [lockdowns]. It could have been done at any time. It's always difficult, especially with that family, to tell what's real and what's a filter."</p><p>Moradzadeh also said he's seen Kim Kardashian in-person during an event, and thought she looked completely different from her Instagram photos, so it could be the same for her sister Khloe.</p><h2>It's possible to get plastic surgery during the pandemic</h2><p>Moradzadeh, who didn't treat Kardashian, said he resumed in-office procedures and home visits on Friday, May 1, after Beverly Hills officials <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2020/05/01/us/coronavirus-beverly-hills-botox.html">lifted a ban on elective procedures</a> during the coronavirus pandemic.</p><p>Moradzadeh requires his patients to do a COVID-19 test 48 hours before their planned procedure to ensure they're virus-free, and also requires they wear masks and do temperature checks when entering his office.</p><p>"I just make sure I'm not touching anything and I'm really aware of everything I bring with me. Visits are kept short, so there's not going to be as much socializing [as usual]. It's more limited, basically," Moradzadeh said of the at-home visits he does.</p><p>These precautions make it possible for people to get plastic surgery during the pandemic, and Moradzadeh said he's still getting requests for more intense procedures like rhinoplasty and eyelid lifts.</p><h2>Khloe may have gotten a nose job, fillers, and fat removal</h2><p>When looking at the viral Instagram selfie of Kardashian, Moradzadeh said he had a few ideas about the procedures she may have had done.</p><p>First, Moradzadeh said Kardashian may have had another rhinoplasty, or nose job, since her nose appears thinner than in previous photos.</p><p>He also said it looks like she had <a href="https://www.plasticsurgery.org/cosmetic-procedures/buccal-fat-removal">buccal fat</a> removed from her face, which is a type of fat in a person's cheeks. When these fat "pads" are removed, it can create a more sculpted look in the hollow part of the cheek, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.</p><p>Last, Moradzadeh said Kardashian's defined jawline could be due to filler injections.</p><p>"There's definitely modifications to filler in her jaw line, cheek, bone, chin area, and lips," he said. "And then after that it's contacts and lashes and makeup and Photoshop and filters. In battle rap, nothing is off limits. You can talk about the person's race, looks, medical condition, sexual preference, their dead mom. Nothing is taboo.</p><p>"Bodied" (opening in theaters Friday and available on YouTube November 28) is basically "8 Mile" if it wasn't made in Hollywood. We follow Adam (Calum Worthy), a white graduate student who is fascinated by the art of battle rapping and befriends one of Oakland's best, Behn Grynn (Jackie Long), to be his guide in the battle rap culture so he can write a thesis paper on it. But it turns out Adam has some skills, and quickly finds himself on the circuit with Behn battle rapping. Eventually Adam gets so engrossed in the rush of the culture that he's willing to alienate his family, friends, and even Behn to rise in the battle rap ranks.</p><p>The movie, which Eminem is a producer on, isn't just a satirical exploration of woke culture and the echo chamber that is social <keyword id="6354777" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Media">media</keyword>. Kahn uses his talents to tell two stories: one through the vocal storytelling of the raps (penned masterfully by real battle rapper Kid Twist) and the other visually, as Kahn scatters the movie with special effects to heighten the prose.</p><p>Business Insider sat down with Kahn in New York City to talk about why the only way he could make the movie was to self-finance it, passing on a major Hollywood blockbuster to make "Bodied," putting the actors through battle rap boot camp, and why the movie makes you feel less racist because it's so racist.</p><p><strong>Jason Guerrasio:</strong> Would this have been made without you self-financing it?</p><p><strong>Joseph Kahn:</strong> Absolutely not. And here's the thing, battle rap does exist in the popular culture in things like roasts and "Drop the Mic" and all that stuff, but that's not really battle rap. That's saying someone who gets into a pity-pat slap fight is boxing. No, in boxing you're supposed to get hurt. The entire agenda is that your opponent is knocked out. In battle rap, you're supposed to hurt the opponent to the point they are dead.&#xa0;<p><strong>Guerrasio:</strong> In the early days, did you ever think that someone out there might get what you wanted to do and write you a check instead of you using your own money?</p><p><strong>Kahn:</strong> The story behind this is I made this short "<a href="https://vimeo.com/120401488" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Power/Rangers,</a>" which is this thing I put online that I made in secret for a year. I wanted to make a commentary on grim, dark superheroes and how Hollywood markets the stuff. Doing a satire by making the most serious version of the silliest kids property. After that came out literally every studio knocked at my door. And I looked at every project floating around and I couldn't find one property I was interested in doing.&#xa0;</p><p><strong>Guerrasio:</strong> You were even being offered the major IPs?</p><p><strong>Kahn:</strong> They were there and I had the opportunity and nothing interested me. So I was talking to Adi Shankar, my producing partner on "Power/Rangers" and he said, "What do you want to do next?" And I said, "Well, I have choice one, which is this big property, or choice two is I want to make a battle rap movie." And he said, "Do choice two."&#xa0;</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5bd9f0ee01b12d3790502d24-1200/bodied%20neon.jpg" border="0" alt="Bodied Neon" data-mce-source="Neon"><p class="source"><span>Neon</span></p><p class="caption">"Bodied."</p></img></div><p></p></div></div><strong>Guerrasio:</strong> So what kind of check did you have to write yourself for this?<p><strong>Kahn:</strong> I did it for under $2 million.</p><p><strong>Guerrasio:</strong> It looks amazing for what you put in.</p><p><strong>Kahn:</strong> That includes soundtrack, by the way. And we shot it over 23 days with a SAG crew. If anyone knows anything about film business, that's extraordinarily hard what we did.&#xa0;Which shows me that if I ever wanted to do one of these big Hollywood movies, I'll know how to do it.&#xa0;<br><br><strong>Guerrasio:</strong> But the thing is you won't be able to do it your way. You'll have to collaborate with the executives.</br></br></p><p><strong>Kahn:</strong> And by the way, I'm not opposed to that. I just need to make sure I'm in a position where I believe in the project. I mean, I do Lexus commercials, I think I can work with others.&#xa0;</p><p><strong>Guerrasio:</strong> Here's the irony of what you did with "Bodied." You self-finance the movie, do it how you want to, but now you have to sell it to a distributor or streaming service so audiences can see it. You have to play the game. Before going into that process, did you consider self-distribution?</p><p><strong>Kahn:</strong> It was a serious thought at one point. And I'll tell you exactly when it was, it was when I was submitting to film festivals and getting turned down by every one of them. Sundance, SXSW, Tribeca, New York Film Festival.&#xa0;</p><p><strong>Guerrasio:</strong> Then Sundance showed it this year.&#xa0;</p><p><strong>Kahn:</strong> Yeah, the year after I submitted it. What happened was everyone was very uncomfortable with the film because it didn't fall into a very specific category. I do feel that the movies that are on the indie film circuit, and I'm a liberal person, these are just movies that have liberals clapping themselves on the back. Like showing, "I'm so woke." <em>This movie says murder is bad</em>. Well, of course murder is bad. <em>This movie had this amazing message that slavery is bad</em>. Yes, it's bad. What exactly are you saying that you don't already know? I find these weak, quite frankly. Something like "Bodied" is a morality tale, but a satiric morality tale. With satire you don't have to state your moral. You can criticize a moral without having an answer, and that's what we did. We are criticizing today's world. I don't think filmmakers should be giving answers, because who are these guys and girls? Just because they were able to finance a movie they suddenly are philosopher kings that have all the answers to life? We were in the Midnight section and from what I understand we were right on the fence. Specifically the young people, the millennials, were like, "This is so racist you can't program this," and they voted against the movie being in the festival. The young people voted against this movie! Which is crazy! But it played at Toronto and won the Midnight audience award. Then it played at AFI and it won the audience award and at Fantastic Fest it won the audience award. It turns out people are not offended by this movie, people are enjoying themselves. This whole concept that woke culture has of the completely not-racist person that sees no stereotypes that lives a perfectly amazing life, this person does not exist. The reality is differences in people are funny. It's a movie that makes you feel less racist by being more racist.&#xa0;</p><p><strong>Guerrasio:</strong> You should put that on the poster.</p><p><strong>Kahn:</strong> [<em>laughs</em>] And the movie changes depending on what the national politics are at that point. Look what's happened this week, bombs being sent out to the left, a synagogue being shot up, and then we have Megyn Kelly being fired over blackface comments. The cutaways you do to show reaction shots of battle rap lyrics is as funny as the lyrics themselves. The creative over-the-shoulder shots. The visual effects that pop up in the middle of raps. Were all of these things in your head for a while and "Bodied" was the vessel to use them?<p><strong>Kahn:</strong> In my off time I often think on a quantum mechanical level of how films work. I'm not talking about just story or act structure, I'm talking about how to edit work. I have really been getting into subjective filmmaking, how to isolate the camera to go into someone's perspective for subjectivity. So the visual effects are inter-subjective camera work where you're blending in watching the person and experiencing what that person is saying, all at once.&#xa0;</p><p><strong>Guerrasio:</strong> Outside of the visuals, there are the performances. How did you get these actors to give a naturalistic feel of being battle rapers?</p><p><strong>Kahn:</strong> There was a huge rehearsal beforehand. They went to battle rap school. There's this battle rapper <a href="https://versetracker.com/rapper/rone" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Rone</a> who taught Adam to be more racist, to put it frankly. Like the line about cutting the bonsai tree, he told him, "But say it with an Asian accent." [<em>laughs</em>] So there was a two month battle rap school they went to and that was still happening on set. It was so critical that they get all the lines exactly right. It was, no joke, like Shakespeare. Most films you can screw up the lines, with this, for the structure to work, you must hit exactly the word at the point you're supposed to hit it.&#xa0;</p><p><strong>Guerrasio:</strong> What did Eminem think of the "8 Mile" insults in the movie?</p><p><strong>Kahn:</strong> He loved it. He watched it and was into it. His whole camp was like, "This is stuff we hear every day, so we love this." This is the thing about Eminem, he's incredibly self deprecating. He knows who he is, he knows how he plays in the culture. The reason why he's successful as opposed to other white rappers is that he gets it. He's always referencing himself as a fraud or fake Elvis and I think the self deprecation serves him well.</p><p><strong>Guerrasio:</strong> I'm curious, do music video directors root for one another when you guys go out and make a feature? Like, did you drop Director X a line and wish him luck on <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/superfly-director-goes-from-biggest-music-video-director-in-hip-hop-to-hollywood-2018-6">the release of "Superfly"</a>?</p><p><strong>Kahn:</strong> I am the worst person to ask about this because I am the most antisocial person. It's surprising that I have a healthy career in music videos because I am the last person that should be hanging out with any celebrity. On my daily basis when I'm not shooting I'm literally just surfing the internet or reading a book. That's all I do.&#xa0;</p><p><strong>Guerrasio:</strong> So it's not like the music video director community hang out a lot.</p><p><strong>Kahn:</strong> I really don't know any other filmmakers. I just don't hang out.&#xa0;</p><p><strong>Guerrasio:</strong> Is this breaking news to you that a music video director made "Superfly."</p><p><strong>Kahn:</strong> I actually didn't even know there was a movie called "Superfly."&#xa0;</p><p><strong>Guerrasio:</strong> [<em>laughs</em>] You should see it.&#xa0;</p><p><strong>Kahn:</strong> And here is the other thing, it's very hard to get me in a movie theater. For me it's not a financial issue, though for most it is. I think that's why most go see a Marvel movie because it's a safe bet. It's a low risk.&#xa0;</p><p><strong>Guerrasio:</strong> You're not doing a good job selling "Bodied" right now.&#xa0;</p><p><strong>Kahn:</strong> [<em>laughs</em>] I would like people to picture "Bodied" as Amazon back in 1998. We are a $5 stock. This email was meant to be sent out to all of the store managers to prepare them for the launch of our limited edition Nutty Chocolatta doughnut filled with NUTELLA® hazelnut spread with cocoa.<br><br>Krispy Kreme remains committed to serving our customers' needs and we strive to prepare our staff for any enquiries we may receive around any new campaigns. Tons of people received a 'leaked memo' that revealed a new Krispy Kreme flavor (and the brand says it's not a marketing stunt)

<p>The inaugural event was <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/eddie-huang-on-the-great-googa-mooga-2012-5">plagued by long lines and food shortages</a>. But t<span style="line-height: 1.5em;">his year, the event is back, and hopefully will run more smoothly the second time around.</span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">The festival will start Friday, May 17 with a kick-off concert headlined by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and the Flaming Lips. Tickets for the concert, which are $54.50 each, </span><a href="http://brooklyn.googamooga.com/tickets/" target="_blank">go on sale today</a><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">. Like last year, tickets for the rest of the weekend festival will be free for those who register and are selected through a lottery.</span></p>
<p>The organizers have said they learned a lot from last year's feedback, and have made some changes to improve the experience this time around.</p>
<p>Some of the improvements slated for this year include:</p>
<ul>
<li>
<p>Expanding the General Admission footprint <span>—</span> hopefully meaning more entry points and shorter lines.</p>
</li>
<li>
<p>Increasing the number of vendors and retailers so that lines move quicker and there is more food and drink.</p>
</li>
<li>
<p>Improving the VIP experience, which many complained about last year.</p>
</li>
<li>
<p>And finally, working with cell phone carriers to try and address the fact that no one could get cell service last year.</p>
</li>
</ul>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Given the way Superfly, the outfit organizing the festivities, built up its Bonnaroo festival into a world-class concert event, we are betting this year's Great GoogaMooga will be great.</span></p>
