The contract, signed on Sunday (August 25), encompasses the supply of critical equipment and the supervision of the erection and commissioning processes for three major <keyword id="98684" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="power-projects" source="Orion">power projects</keyword>. Each project will feature a capacity of 2x800 MW and will be based on advanced <keyword id="21954118" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="supercritical-technology" source="keywords">Supercritical Technology</keyword>. The projects are slated to be developed at the following locations: Kawai Phase-II and Kawai Phase-III in Rajasthan, and Mahan Phase-III in Madhya Pradesh. Under this agreement, BHEL is tasked with providing a comprehensive suite of equipment, including Boilers, Turbines, Generators, and associated auxiliaries. The contract also includes control and instrumentation systems. In addition, BHEL will oversee the installation and commissioning of these systems, ensuring that the projects meet all operational and performance standards. The timeline for project completion varies across the different locations. The Kawai Phase-II project is expected to be completed within 49 months, Kawai Phase-III within 52 months, and Mahan Phase-III within 55 months. These timelines reflect the scale and complexity of the projects and the commitment to delivering them within a specified period. Kolkata, In a bold move to diversify its operations and integrate further into the value chain, <keyword id="45383" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="coal-india" source="Orion">Coal India</keyword> Limited (CIL) is targeting the acquisition of lithium, cobalt, and nickel assets abroad. The company has recently amended its Memorandum of Association (MoA) to include non-ferrous and critical minerals, indicating its commitment to expand its presence in new sectors. In the past, the miner's attempt to acquire coal assets aboard did not fructify. In its pursuit of overseas assets, CIL is currently identifying suitable opportunities for mergers and acquisitions, the management informed its shareholders in its latest annual report. The strategic move reflects the company's vision to secure a steady supply of these critical minerals toward the Atmanirbhar mission of India. In 2022, the Ministry of Mines also created a joint venture company, Khanij Bidesh India Ltd (KABIL), with participating interest from NALCO, Hindustan Copper Ltd and Mineral Exploration Corporation Ltd (MECL). KABIL is mandated to identify and acquire overseas mineral assets of critical and strategic nature such as lithium, cobalt, etc. In the past, NMDC and Coal India were considered for participation in the special purpose vehicle (SPV). Highlighting capex plans, Coal India stated that it has proposed a capital expenditure of Rs 16,600 crore in 2023-24. "As part of our investment plan, we have strategically allocated a substantial amount towards diversification projects including ventures such as solar power, thermal power plants, revival of fertilizer plants, surface coal gasification, coal bed methane and others. "With a focus on acquisitions and JVs, we seek to venture beyond our core competencies, tap into emerging opportunities and manage associated risks effectively," Coal India informed its shareholders. In 2022-23, the capital expenditure of CIL registered a phenomenal growth of 20.90 per cent to Rs 18,619 crore. Coal India chairman <keyword id="7940615" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="p-m-prasad" source="Orion">P M Prasad</keyword> said CIL has executed three Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with BHEL, GAIL India Limited, and IOCL for undertaking coal-to-chemical business using surface coal gasification, which is proposed to be implemented jointly through JV companies. Coal India has also signed two MoU for its foray into the thermal power business. MoU between CIL and Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL) was executed for the purchase of 1,200 MW from the proposed MBPL Power Plant. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Sowmyanarayan Sampath is the CEO of Verizon's consumer group — his seventh job at the company.</li><li>He wants leaders to keep planning for the long term despite economic uncertainty.</li></ul>Sowmyanarayan Sampath, who goes by Sampath and has worked at Verizon since 2014, took on his latest challenge at the communications giant in March.He became the CEO of Verizon's consumer group, which includes its <a target="_blank" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2022-12-16/verizon-vz-lost-its-network-superiority-now-it-s-paying-the-price">flagging mobile unit</a>."It's a stabilization and a turnaround role, which is typically what I get pulled into every time," he told Business Insider. "This is my seventh job in nine years at Verizon. I tend to go where something needs to be solved."His first order of business is getting back to basics."Why do customers need connectivity? What do they want? What are the criteria they use to choose connectivity?" he asked, describing some questions that drive his work.Internet access is essential for modern life, Sampath added."If a kid doesn't have connectivity earlier, he can't play video games, do homework. If there is no connectivity, a mom cannot log into a Zoom call from home," Sampath said. "Connectivity is the bridge to everything."Internet access is so important that people are unwilling to settle for bad service."'Good enough' is really not good enough," he said. "Customers want the best and they're willing to pay a little more for it."As he took on his new role, Sampath worked at Verizon stores and one of the company's overseas call centers. "I'm not as good of a salesman as I thought I was," he joked. "But it's been a good start."One of Sampath's goals is to simplify. To him, that includes using AI to help workers "reduce cognitive load" — meaning all the information they must keep in their heads and relay to fellow employees.Sampath's 2024 goal is for Verizon to be "the world's best AI-applied company" and use it daily — first within internal workflows, then for customer interactions."We have a very bold ambition," he said.But first, it's imperative to test out AI-driven processes with "pilots and trials." "I want to put them in production, responsibly," he added. "I don't want the algo doing things I wouldn't do myself."Sampath's insights are part of BI's year-end leadership package "Looking Ahead 2024" that digs into vision, strategy, and challenges across corporate America.The following interview has been edited for length and clarity.What are you most excited about for 2024?I want to be the world's best AI-applied company. I think there's something interesting about AI: Everyone talks about it. Everyone claims they love technology, but no one's using it at scale.The gap between technology and adoption is never this big. Even previous technology jumps — there was always a little gap between the technology's greatness and adoption. Here, the technology is light years ahead of what's being adopted.I would like to be one of the first companies to adopt it at scale and for production — for our sales, service teams, and install teams are going to be supercritical. We're doing ungodly amounts of work to make that happen in 2024. We'd probably be one of the first companies to do it at the scale we're working on.I want my reps and call centers and salespeople to use it. Second, I want to infuse it deep into the product stack. I've got six or seven very clear use cases that we are pretty far along on.But step one is internal. Step two is customer interactions.What are you most worried about for 2024?Uncertainty. There's not a single 2024 plan or document I write or I look at that doesn't have the word "uncertainty" in it.The uncertainty is coming from a few areas. The first is interest rates, which are driven by our fiscal policy. Are long-term interest rates here — are long-term interest rates high? Or do we go back to something a little more benign? It's going to have a pretty radical impact our customers' behavior.There's uncertainty about the economy. There's uncertainty with elections looming, and it's going to be massively polarizing. Along with geopolitical uncertainty and potential supply shocks as well.I've never seen a year that has everything baked into it. The US has done very well in last three, four years compared to the rest of the world, because we are playing the long game. We are investing for the future. We're not cutting back on investment.My biggest worry is with all this uncertainty: Folks like myself saying, "You know what? The uncertainty is too much. I'm going to pull back and wait and watch." Many people in my role do it.There is nothing more stressful than "wait and watch." Because then the economy comes to a grinding halt and everyone's watching the other person, and it has far-reaching implications.Stay firm, stay the course. America is going to be here. Do not let short-term distractions take us off a long-term game.What is one thing that you got right in 2023?I think it is the connectivity piece — how critical connectivity is for everything. It's the gateway to banks, the gateway to education, the gateway to work. It has brought some renewed purpose back in our mission.One of the things I had to do early on is get the team aligned on our purpose. And the purpose is: We like connecting things and people. It has helped us in our company internally to rally around.I tell people, "You know, when a grandmother is calling a grandson, there's a high chance Verizon made that call happened. When a girlfriend calls you, there is a high chance we made that happen. When you can't go into work, you're not well, and you need to do a teledoc appointment, we made it work."So connectivity is key.What is one thing you got wrong in 2023?Return to office.At best, it has mixed results. We didn't have a mandate. We just told people, "At some point, you've got to start coming back to the office for two, three days a week." And I dug into that a little more.Gen Z is going to become the biggest workforce in the next couple of years. They have been pretty clear: They don't want to come into the office. They want to come in when they want to. They're willing to move cities, they're willing to move jobs. If we as a society, as a company, don't align on how they want to be served and how they want to work, we risk losing the talent pool.I'm part of a "bridge generation" of leaders. Most of my peers are 10 to 15 years older than me. I'm the bridge, and it's a generational thing.You will have companies that attract certain talent and companies that don't attract certain talent, and that's going to have long-term consequences. Continuing to be flexible, continuing to listen, and not having sharp mandates are important to us.

The CEO of Verizon's mobile unit has a bold ambition for salespeople and call centers in 2024 

Bhubaneswar, Jun 23 () Adani Power Limited (APL) on Tuesday said it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire 49 per cent stake in Odisha Power Generation Corporation (OPGC) from the affiliates of The AES Corporation (AES), the US-based global energy company. OPGC operates 1,740 MW thermal power plant at Banharpalli in Jharsuguda district of Odisha. This plant is the mainstay of the state for base load power supply and amongst the lowest cost power generated in the state, it said. The supercritical capacity of 1,320 MW is a recently commissioned modern plant with low carbon footprint. The plant has a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) valid for 25 years with the state owned off-taker GRIDCO and sources fuel from a nearby captive mine, a company statement said. The Government of Odisha holds the balance 51 per cent stake in OPGC. The acquisition also marks APLs foray into Odisha state, and it demonstrates the Adani Groups long-term commitment to develop and operate high quality infrastructure in the state. Adani Group is committed for successful and mutually beneficial long-term partnership with Government of Odisha and the people of this progressive state, it said. AES and Adani Group shall continue to partner to facilitate the delivery of renewables and energy storage in India, it said. The transaction is subject to customary regulatory approvals including compliance with applicable requirements in relation to the Government of Odisha and the receipt of regulatory approvals such as Competition Commission of India and Reserve Bank of India. APL, a part of the diversified Adani Group, is on course to achieve its growth potential with the help of a world-class team of experts in every field of power. Adani Power signs definitive agreement to acquire 49 pc stake in OPGC

New Delhi, Feb 3 () State-run power giant NTPC on Monday said that it has become the top company in Asia to raise the largest syndicated Japanese yen loan worth USD 750 million (around Rs 5,367 crore).
 According to a company statement, the loan has been raised under automatic route of RBI's external commercial borrowings regulations, and is also the highest ever single foreign currency loan raised by NTPC.
 The facility has a door-to-door maturity of 11 years under two tranches.
 The company said, the facility is fully underwritten by State Bank of India, Tokyo, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation, Singapore and Bank of India, Tokyo, on January 20 and will be shortly launched by banks for general syndication.
 "NTPC has signed a syndicated term loan in Japanese Yen (JPY), equivalent to USD 750 million," it said, adding that this is the largest ever syndicated JPY loan raised by any Asian Corporate from offshore Samurai loan market.
 The loan proceeds shall be utilised by the company for funding its capex for installation of flue gas desulphurisation (FGD) system, hydro projects and other projects using ultra supercritical technology with low carbon emission.

Limaye</a>, a planetary scientist at the University of Wisconsin-Madison who wasn't part of the new study, told Business Insider.Limaye explained that air on Venus is essentially separated into three main layers: its supercritical-fluid surface, a tumultuous yet powerful middle layer, and the high-altitude cloud tops of sulfuric acid that constantly blow westward.That fast-moving upper layer of clouds, which lap the planet's slow rotation roughly every 4 days - a feature called the "superrotation" of Venus - is where the gravity wave appears, some 65 kilometers (40 miles) high."What is amazing about this is, if you look at the atmosphere 50 to 55 kilometers [31 to 34 miles] up, it's pretty chaotic," Limaye said. "How does [a gravity wave] survive that? "It will probably drive the entire [science] community to revisit our views of the planet's atmosphere."Unfortunately, Akatsuki is the only spacecraft currently studying Venus, and NASA just funded <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/nasa-new-asteroid-missions-2017-1">two missions to asteroids</a> over a new Venus orbiter and lander (plus <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/neocam-mission-not-fully-funded-nasa-2017-1">a telescope to hunt near-Earth asteroids</a>)."I think this [gravity wave] announcement came maybe 10 days too late," Widemann said. Venus is hiding a 'bizarre' gravity wave in its clouds that spans the entire planet

It takes around three hours for our SUN to send us as much energy, from a distance of nearly 150 million kilometres, that all of mankind’s activities utilize in a single year. Yet, we continue to burn fossil fuels until protecting our environment becomes non-negotiable– which it has. 
 
We ushered in the 21st century where energy needs for the emerging economies in Asia, Africa, and Latin America are expected to pose the greatest threat to our environment, leaving us with no other alternative but to promote cleaner and renewable options for generating electricity. Interestingly, these regions receive more sunlight as compared to North America and Europe but these northern hemisphere continents are way ahead when it comes to rejigging their energy mix in order to show care towards our environment. 
 
Where the Sun doesn’t shine much, the wind blows – records – Denmark, having installed its first wind turbine in the 70’s, aims to become a 100% renewables country by 2050. In 2015, 57% of Scotland’s energy came from renewables. At over 26%, renewables are the biggest contributor to Germany’s electricity supply. In comparison, USA has a share of a good 13% of renewable electricity generation and has a very bright and clean energy future. New technologies that once were extremely expensive to install and use have become very cost competitive at a very fast pace. 
 
These testimonies from around the world inspired India to set an ambitious long term target for renewable energy generation. With 175 GW from renewables (including 100 GW from Solar) by 2022, India’s energy mix will be one of the cleanest and greenest in the world. Through a variety of incentives such as GBI’s (Generation Based Incentives), interest and capital subsidies, tax breaks, and concessional financing, etc., our government has taken the initial steps in the right direction to promote the generation of electricity by renewable energy resources. The multi-pronged policy framework aims to set-up both Grid and ‘Off-Grid’ power generation via solar farming and create an environment of competitive solar energy penetration in centralized and decentralized manner. 
 A substantial government backing, international political consensus (United Nations Climate Change Conference, Paris) and reduction in the prices of PV panel have already pushed the prices of solar electricity downwards. The recent tariff quote of Rs 4.34 per unit, for <keyword id="45179" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="NTPC">NTPC</keyword>’s (reverse) auction of projects of six 70 MW each, by Finland based Fortum Finnsurya Energy indicates that we have achieved the price parity between solar and conventional electricity. The tariff has steadily fallen from Rs 17.91 in 2010, getting closer to the top of the range of coal based power which, typically, is Rs 1.5 to Rs 5 per unit. Given the abundance of both fossil and <keyword id="2176985" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="renewable-resources">renewable resources</keyword> in India, the energy companies need to be creative and focus on resource optimization to stay ahead of the curve. 
 
Even as the country goes bullish on renewable energy, its dependence on Coal and Natural Gas may merely taper down a bit but not before we see a peak production backed by the robust economic growth, pending electrification of large parts of the country, and consideration for weather based outages affecting renewable sources. Therefore, clean coal technologies will be an important part of the energy mix in the country. Investment in these technologies along with focus on increasing supercritical capacity should be the way forward as India looks to add another 100 GW of coal based power over the next 10 years. 
 
On the flipside, we should look at the impact of this ambitious solar power generation plan, which is expected to supply about 30% of India annual electricity needs, on India’s farmlands. Industrialization, large country-wide infrastructure projects, and continuous urbanization has already seen area under cultivation dropping at an alarming rate. Situations of drought, crop failures due to changing climatic conditions – unseasonal rains, drought, excessive heat waves, etc. would leave poor farmers with the only option to sell their land. This may make land acquisition relatively easier in the short run but not without adversely affecting food prices and in majority of cases, social status of the farmers who will no more be landowners. Therefore, it’s very important for the policymakers to look towards the feasibility of leveraging arid land, wherever possible, over the fertile one. Given that India’s demand for electricity is only going to grow, it would be prudent to divert subsidy, tax sops, gap funding, etc. for solar projects, when time appropriate, in developing infrastructure to integrate solar plants on barren land with the grid promoting better land use. 
 
Sun would continue to help in photosynthesis as well as activating electrons in a PV. Therefore, it’s up to us to leverage technology for a Win-Win scenario. Maximizing the urban and rural rooftops would further reduce the pressure on acquiring farmlands to meet the 100 gig target.
