The contract, signed on Sunday (August 25), encompasses the supply of critical equipment and the supervision of the erection and commissioning processes for three major <keyword id="98684" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="power-projects" source="Orion">power projects</keyword>. Each project will feature a capacity of 2x800 MW and will be based on advanced <keyword id="21954118" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="supercritical-technology" source="keywords">Supercritical Technology</keyword>. The projects are slated to be developed at the following locations: Kawai Phase-II and Kawai Phase-III in Rajasthan, and Mahan Phase-III in Madhya Pradesh. Under this agreement, BHEL is tasked with providing a comprehensive suite of equipment, including Boilers, Turbines, Generators, and associated auxiliaries. The contract also includes control and instrumentation systems. In addition, BHEL will oversee the installation and commissioning of these systems, ensuring that the projects meet all operational and performance standards. The timeline for project completion varies across the different locations. The Kawai Phase-II project is expected to be completed within 49 months, Kawai Phase-III within 52 months, and Mahan Phase-III within 55 months. These timelines reflect the scale and complexity of the projects and the commitment to delivering them within a specified period. BHEL secures Rs 11,000 crore contract for three supercritical power projects from Adani Power

New Delhi, State-owned <keyword id="19909029" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="bhel" source="keywords">BHEL</keyword> on Wednesday said it has bagged an order to set up a 2,400 <keyword id="20225858" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mw-supercritical-thermal-power-project" source="keywords">MW supercritical thermal power project</keyword> (STPP) from coal <keyword id="20225857" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="psu-nlc" source="keywords">PSU NLC</keyword> India Ltd. This is the largest power sector order won by the company through competitive bidding, BHEL said in a statement. "BHEL bags an order for setting up a 2,400 MW Supercritical Thermal <keyword id="47379" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="power-project" source="Orion">Power Project</keyword>. BHEL has won the prestigious order under <keyword id="20225859" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="international-competitive-bidding" source="keywords">International Competitive Bidding</keyword> (ICB) for the greenfield project on an Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) basis at Jharsuguda in Odisha," the company said. The scope of the EPC contract includes engineering, manufacturing, supply, erection, and commissioning of crucial equipment, such as boilers, turbines, generators, and other auxiliary systems, for the 3x800 MW thermal power project. The scope also includes boilers with biomass co-firing capability and highly efficient latest pollution control equipment. The project will be commissioned within 64 months. On commissioning, this plant will contribute to meeting the future base load requirement of electricity in the country. The major equipment will be manufactured at BHEL's Trichy, Haridwar, Hyderabad, Jhansi, Bengaluru, Ranipet, Bhopal, Rudrapur, and Varanasi plants while the company's power sector - southern region will be responsible for the civil works, and erection and commissioning of the equipment. BHEL has a long-standing partnership with <keyword id="20174233" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="nlcil" source="keywords">NLCIL</keyword> and installed a significant 77 per cent of the coal/lignite-based power stations of the utility, totalling 3,590 MW. It is the largest manufacturer of power generation equipment in the country and has been a major partner in the country's vision to achieve self-reliance in energy.

BHEL gets 2,400 MW greenfield power project from NLC India in Odisha

<keyword id="45417" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="adani-power" source="Orion">Adani Power</keyword> Ltd (APL) on Thursday posted an 83.3% jump in its consolidated net profit to Rs 8,759.42 crore for the April-June quarter on account of higher income. It had reported a net profit of Rs 4,779.86 crore in the April-June period of the preceding 2022-23 fiscal, the company said in a BSE filing. The company's total income surged to Rs 18,109.01 crore from Rs 15,509 crore in the year-ago quarter. Expenses were at Rs 9,309.39 crore in the quarter under review against Rs 9,642.80 crore a year ago. In a separate statement, the company said consolidated EBITDA of the company during the first quarter was at Rs 10,618 crore, 41.5% higher compared to Rs 7,506 crore in the year-ago period. APL achieved an average plant load factor (PLF) of 60.1% in the quarter compared to 58.6% a year ago. The sales were at 17.5 billion units (BU) from an installed capacity of 15,250 MW in April-June 2023 over the sales volume of 16.3 BU on an installed capacity of 13,650 MW in April-June 2022. Incremental generation capacity of the 1,600 MW Godda Ultra-supercritical thermal power plant (<keyword id="17833539" type="General" weightage="30" keywordseo="usctpp" source="Orion">USCTPP</keyword>) in Jharkhand contributed to the increase in sales volumes for the first quarter of FY 2023-24. S B Khyalia, the CEO of Adani Power Ltd, said, "Adani Power has increased its lead among IPPs (independent power producers) with commissioning of the 1,600 MW Godda USCTPP and entered a new era of transnational power sales. We are proud to support Bangladesh in enhancing the means available to its high-potential economy for fulfilling aspirations of its hard-working and enterprising population." APL started exporting power to Bangladesh from its 1,600 MW power project on April 10, 2023. The Godda plant will supply 1,496 MW under the power purchase agreement (PPA) signed with the Bangladesh Power Development Board for a period of 25 years via a 400 kV dedicated transmission system connected to the Bangladesh grid. The PPA was executed in November 2017. On April 6, the first unit of 800 MW capacity of the Godda plant in Jharkhand began commercial operations. The second unit, also of 800 MW capacity, followed on June 26. Part of the diversified Adani Group, Adani Power (APL) is the largest private thermal power producer in India. The company has an installed thermal power capacity of 15,250 MW spread across eight power plants in Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, and Jharkhand, apart from a 40 MW solar power plant in Gujarat.

Adani Power Q1 net profit grows 83% to over Rs 8,750 crore

New Delhi, Billionaire <keyword id="111343" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="gautam-adani" source="Orion">Gautam Adani</keyword>'s conglomerate clocked a 42 per cent year-on-year growth in pre-tax profit, as businesses ranging from airports to power and sea ports registered impressive growth, the group said on Wednesday. All-time high EBITDA of Rs 23,532 crore in April-June was almost equal to the full-year FY19 (April 2018 to March 2019 fiscal year) EBITDA of Rs 24,780 crore, <keyword id="6367820" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="adani-group" source="Orion">Adani group</keyword> said in a statement. The conglomerate that spans 10 listed companies ranging from flagship incubator <keyword id="118623" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Adani-Enterprises" source="Orion">Adani Enterprises</keyword> Ltd to ports business (<keyword id="76451" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="adani" source="Orion">Adani</keyword> Ports &amp; SEZ Ltd), renewable unit (Adani Green Energy Ltd), power utility (<keyword id="45417" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="adani-power" source="Orion">Adani Power</keyword> Ltd), electricity transmission firm (Adani Energy Solutions), and city gas business (Adani Total Gas Ltd), had a net debt of Rs 18,689.7 crore after accounting for a cash balance of Rs 42,115 crore. Core infrastructure and utility platform, which generates stable and assured cash flows, generated EBITDA of Rs 20,233 crore, accounting for 86 per cent of the total portfolio EBITDA. "This gives a high level of stability and multi-decadal earnings predictability and visibility. The robust profits have resulted in the portfolio gaining a very strong liquidity position," it said. Adani group has been concentrating on improving operational performance as a comeback strategy after being hit by a damning report of a US short-seller in January this year. The Hindenburg report released on January 24, alleged accounting fraud, stock price manipulation and improper use of tax havens, triggering a stock market rout that had erased close to USD 150 billion in the market value at its lowest point. Adani Group has denied all allegations by Hindenburg and its comeback strategy has included recasting its ambitions, scrapping acquisitions, pre-paying debt to address concerns about its cash flows and borrowings, and scaling back its pace of spending on new projects. Promoters have sold stakes in five of the 10 listed companies to investors such as GQG Partners, helping stocks recover some of the losses. In the statement, the group said incubation under flagship Adani Enterprises continues to be a success story with airports, green hydrogen and other businesses seeing their profits almost double year-on-year. With EBITDA of Rs 1718 crore, these businesses contributed 7 per cent to the portfolio EBITDA. "The robust portfolio performance was primarily driven by the renewable power business under Adani Green, infrastructure businesses under Adani Enterprises, and cement businesses under Adani Cement," the statement said. Adani Green reported EBITDA of Rs 2,200 crore, a 67 per cent rise y-o-y. This was on the back of an increase in operational capacity by 43 per cent to 8,316 MW. The cement business also showed a strong operating performance because of cost optimization and improving synergies. EBITDA per tonne increased to Rs 1253 from Rs 888 in June 2022 quarter and Rs 1079 in March 2023 quarter. As a result, EBITDA of the cement business grew 54 per cent y-o-y to Rs 1,935 crore. However, Adani Enterprises Ltd's existing business saw EBITDA fall by 12 per cent due to a correction in coal prices and volume stabilisation. The FMCG business saw a drop of 64 per cent as a consequence of high-cost inventory, the statement said. Under Adani Enterprises Ltd, the airport business witnessed a 27 per cent growth in passengers to 21.3 million. Road business constructed an additional 79.8 lane km while solar modules volumes increased 87 per cent to 614 MW. A 17 MW data center at Chennai is now fully operational. Adani Energy Solutions, previously known as Adani Transmissions Ltd, increased the electricity transmission network to 19,788 circuit km on the addition of 550 circuit km. Adani Gas added seven CNG stations to take the total to 467. Also, 141 EV charging points were installed and 7 lakh households now received piped cooking gas from the firm. Adani Ports and SEZ recorded the highest-ever quarterly cargo volume of 101.4 million tonnes while Adani Power commissioned 1,600 MW of Godda ultra-supercritical power plant. Adani Wilmar - the group's FMCG firm - crossed 1.49 million tonnes volumes during the quarter, delivering a 25 per cent year-on-year growth. The cement business which comprises recently acquired Ambuja Cement and ACC, saw sales volumes rise 9 per cent to 15.4 million tonnes.

Adani group EBITDA grows 42% in the first quarter of FY24

Kolkata, In a bold move to diversify its operations and integrate further into the value chain, <keyword id="45383" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="coal-india" source="Orion">Coal India</keyword> Limited (CIL) is targeting the acquisition of lithium, cobalt, and nickel assets abroad. The company has recently amended its Memorandum of Association (MoA) to include non-ferrous and critical minerals, indicating its commitment to expand its presence in new sectors. In the past, the miner's attempt to acquire coal assets aboard did not fructify. In its pursuit of overseas assets, CIL is currently identifying suitable opportunities for mergers and acquisitions, the management informed its shareholders in its latest annual report. The strategic move reflects the company's vision to secure a steady supply of these critical minerals toward the Atmanirbhar mission of India. In 2022, the Ministry of Mines also created a joint venture company, Khanij Bidesh India Ltd (KABIL), with participating interest from NALCO, Hindustan Copper Ltd and Mineral Exploration Corporation Ltd (MECL). KABIL is mandated to identify and acquire overseas mineral assets of critical and strategic nature such as lithium, cobalt, etc. In the past, NMDC and Coal India were considered for participation in the special purpose vehicle (SPV). Highlighting capex plans, Coal India stated that it has proposed a capital expenditure of Rs 16,600 crore in 2023-24. "As part of our investment plan, we have strategically allocated a substantial amount towards diversification projects including ventures such as solar power, thermal power plants, revival of fertilizer plants, surface coal gasification, coal bed methane and others. "With a focus on acquisitions and JVs, we seek to venture beyond our core competencies, tap into emerging opportunities and manage associated risks effectively," Coal India informed its shareholders. In 2022-23, the capital expenditure of CIL registered a phenomenal growth of 20.90 per cent to Rs 18,619 crore. Coal India chairman <keyword id="7940615" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="p-m-prasad" source="Orion">P M Prasad</keyword> said CIL has executed three Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with BHEL, GAIL India Limited, and IOCL for undertaking coal-to-chemical business using surface coal gasification, which is proposed to be implemented jointly through JV companies. Coal India has also signed two MoU for its foray into the thermal power business. The first is for a joint venture between <keyword id="1365399" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="south-eastern-coalfields-limited" source="Orion">South Eastern Coalfields Limited</keyword> (SECL) and Madhya Pradesh Power Generating Company Limited (MPPGCL) to implement a 1x660 MW Supercritical thermal power station replacing the retired generating units situated at the existing premises of MPPGCL's <keyword id="1472730" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="amarkantak-thermal-power-station" source="Orion">Amarkantak Thermal Power Station</keyword>, Chachai, district Anuppur, Madhya Pradesh. The other initiative is setting up of 2x800 MW Supercritical thermal power plant in Odisha, through Mahanadi Basin Power Limited (MBPL), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL). MoU between CIL and Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL) was executed for the purchase of 1,200 MW from the proposed MBPL Power Plant. CIL has also established joint ventures (JVs) with prominent entities such as the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC), Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL), Gas Authority of India Limited (GAIL), and Rashtriya Chemicals and <keyword id="5270214" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="fertilisers-limited" source="Orion">Fertilisers Limited</keyword> (RCF). These partnerships aim to mitigate technological and financial risks associated with diversification projects, while also leveraging the expertise of its business partners, the dry-fuel miner said.

Coal India embarks on overseas acquisition of critical mineral assets

New Delhi, Feb 3 () State-run power giant NTPC on Monday said that it has become the top company in Asia to raise the largest syndicated Japanese yen loan worth USD 750 million (around Rs 5,367 crore).
 According to a company statement, the loan has been raised under automatic route of RBI's external commercial borrowings regulations, and is also the highest ever single foreign currency loan raised by NTPC.
 The facility has a door-to-door maturity of 11 years under two tranches.
 The company said, the facility is fully underwritten by State Bank of India, Tokyo, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation, Singapore and Bank of India, Tokyo, on January 20 and will be shortly launched by banks for general syndication.
 "NTPC has signed a syndicated term loan in Japanese Yen (JPY), equivalent to USD 750 million," it said, adding that this is the largest ever syndicated JPY loan raised by any Asian Corporate from offshore Samurai loan market.
 The loan proceeds shall be utilised by the company for funding its capex for installation of flue gas desulphurisation (FGD) system, hydro projects and other projects using ultra supercritical technology with low carbon emission.

	As per a statement issued by BHEL, Telangana State Power Generation Corporation Limited (TSGENCO) has entered into an MoU with the state-run firm for construction of new thermal power plants totalling to 6,000 MW in the state in the next three years in order to meet the increasing demand for power. 
	 In an offiicial BHEL statement, MoU is valued at Rs 3,810 crore--the order is for setting up the 800 MW supercritical thermal power plant on <keyword id="129822" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="EPC">EPC</keyword> (engineering, procurement &amp; construction) basis at Kothagudem in Khammam District of Telangana. 
	 
	Both BHEL and TSGENCO are setting up teams to expedite clearances and execution of the project, which will be commissioned in 36 months on a fast-track basis.

A mixing machine combines the known gases on Venus and a powerful heater warms them up."It takes two-and-a-half days to warm up and five days to cool down," Leah Nakley, GEER's lead engineer, told Business Insider.Costa says one thing he's come to understand by working with GEER is just how strange the atmosphere of Venus is at the planet's surface."It's a supercritical fluid mixture, not just a gas," Costa said.Supercritical fluids <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-gCTKteN5Y4">behave like a gas and a liquid</a> at the same time. I guess it'd be like sticking yourself inside a pressure cooker," he said.But the atmosphere of Venus also has trace amounts hydrogen fluoride, hydrogen chloride, hydrogen sulfide, and sulfuric acid, which are all extremely dangerous chemicals."Instead of having water vapor clouds, Venus has sulfuric acid clouds," he said. "And you have to go through those to even get to the surface. That is terrifying."<h2>The next mission to Venus</h2><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5848250fba6eb620008b7e34-1200" alt="davinci venus mission descent stages" data-mce-source="DAVINCI/NASA" data-mce-caption="The planned stages of DAVINCI's descent to the surface of Venus." data-link="http://science.gsfc.nasa.gov/690/photos.html" /><a href="http://science.gsfc.nasa.gov/690/photos.html">DAVINCI/NASA</a>The planned stages of DAVINCI's descent to the surface of Venus.</div></div></div>Japan is currently the only nation with a spacecraft around Venus, called Akatsuki, though <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/japanese-akatsuki-spacecraft-2015-12">it arrived 5 years late</a> and is an orbiter, not a lander.The US, meanwhile, hasn't launched a mission dedicated to Venus since 1989 (the Magellan orbiter) and hasn't landed anything on the world in more than 45 years.However, NASA is currently mulling the launch of a proposed <a href="http://science.gsfc.nasa.gov/solarsystem/projectsalpha">Venus probe called DAVINCI</a>.If NASA chooses to fully fund that mission in as part of its Discovery program - GEER is currently being upgraded in part to support researching materials for the descent probe - it would arrive sometime in 2023, parachute down through the atmosphere for 63 minutes, sample gases along the way, and take the highest-resolution images yet of the surface.In the past, NASA researchers have also envisioned dropping <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8jfH7kK61OU">shiny, nuclear-powered rovers on Venus</a>. Here's why you would never, ever want to walk on the surface of Venus

<img class="gwt-Image" src="/photo/48421434.cms" />In its annual report this year, India’s largest <keyword id="2993803" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="fuel-producer">fuel producer</keyword> <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=coal+india">Coal India </a>has said that it might spend Rs 10,600 crore this fiscal to raise its production capacity and ramp-up the infrastructure. As per an Economic Times report, the company had also provisioned Rs 500 crore for its <keyword id="6372754" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mozambique">Mozambique</keyword> project, though the funds, reportedly, remained unspent. 
 <keyword id="45383" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Coal-India">Coal India</keyword>, in 2014-15 had spent Rs 5,173 crore on projects against a targeted investment of Rs 5,225 crore. 
 
The firm, however, has allocated Rs 5,990 crore this year to ramp-up capacity and taking on new projects. The initiative will help the company achieve a production target of 1 billion tonne by 2020. Of this, 908 million tonne has already been firmed up while the rest is being charted. 
The company has also kept aside an amount of nearly Rs 4,150 crore to invest in infrastructure projects this year. The project primarily includes railway infrastructure to ensure coal evacuation from all possible areas. 
 An investment of Rs 5,894 crore had already been approved by the <keyword id="643991" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Coal-India-Board">Coal India Board</keyword> earlier this year focusing on two railway lines – Tori-Shivpur-Kathotia in <keyword id="6360371" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jharkhand">Jharkhand</keyword> and Kharsia-Korichapar-Dharamjaigarh in Chhattisgarh largely. 
 It had also approved an investment of Rs 11,363 crore in two 800 MW coal based super-critical thermal power plants under its subsidiary <keyword id="534243" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mahanadi-Coalfields">Mahanadi Coalfields</keyword>. 
 
The company's existing projects are envisaged to contribute about 165 million tonne of coal towards its 1 billion tonne target, while projects under implementation are likely to contribute 561 million tonne and future projects about 182 million tonne by 2019-20.

Coal India allocates funds for infrastructure and railway networking

It takes around three hours for our SUN to send us as much energy, from a distance of nearly 150 million kilometres, that all of mankind’s activities utilize in a single year. Yet, we continue to burn fossil fuels until protecting our environment becomes non-negotiable– which it has. 
 
We ushered in the 21st century where energy needs for the emerging economies in Asia, Africa, and Latin America are expected to pose the greatest threat to our environment, leaving us with no other alternative but to promote cleaner and renewable options for generating electricity. Interestingly, these regions receive more sunlight as compared to North America and Europe but these northern hemisphere continents are way ahead when it comes to rejigging their energy mix in order to show care towards our environment. 
 
Where the Sun doesn’t shine much, the wind blows – records – Denmark, having installed its first wind turbine in the 70’s, aims to become a 100% renewables country by 2050. In 2015, 57% of Scotland’s energy came from renewables. At over 26%, renewables are the biggest contributor to Germany’s electricity supply. In comparison, USA has a share of a good 13% of renewable electricity generation and has a very bright and clean energy future. New technologies that once were extremely expensive to install and use have become very cost competitive at a very fast pace. 
 
These testimonies from around the world inspired India to set an ambitious long term target for renewable energy generation. With 175 GW from renewables (including 100 GW from Solar) by 2022, India’s energy mix will be one of the cleanest and greenest in the world. Through a variety of incentives such as GBI’s (Generation Based Incentives), interest and capital subsidies, tax breaks, and concessional financing, etc., our government has taken the initial steps in the right direction to promote the generation of electricity by renewable energy resources. The multi-pronged policy framework aims to set-up both Grid and ‘Off-Grid’ power generation via solar farming and create an environment of competitive solar energy penetration in centralized and decentralized manner. 
 A substantial government backing, international political consensus (United Nations Climate Change Conference, Paris) and reduction in the prices of PV panel have already pushed the prices of solar electricity downwards. The recent tariff quote of Rs 4.34 per unit, for <keyword id="45179" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="NTPC">NTPC</keyword>’s (reverse) auction of projects of six 70 MW each, by Finland based Fortum Finnsurya Energy indicates that we have achieved the price parity between solar and conventional electricity. The tariff has steadily fallen from Rs 17.91 in 2010, getting closer to the top of the range of coal based power which, typically, is Rs 1.5 to Rs 5 per unit. Given the abundance of both fossil and <keyword id="2176985" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="renewable-resources">renewable resources</keyword> in India, the energy companies need to be creative and focus on resource optimization to stay ahead of the curve. 
 
Even as the country goes bullish on renewable energy, its dependence on Coal and Natural Gas may merely taper down a bit but not before we see a peak production backed by the robust economic growth, pending electrification of large parts of the country, and consideration for weather based outages affecting renewable sources. Therefore, clean coal technologies will be an important part of the energy mix in the country. Investment in these technologies along with focus on increasing supercritical capacity should be the way forward as India looks to add another 100 GW of coal based power over the next 10 years. 
 
On the flipside, we should look at the impact of this ambitious solar power generation plan, which is expected to supply about 30% of India annual electricity needs, on India’s farmlands. Industrialization, large country-wide infrastructure projects, and continuous urbanization has already seen area under cultivation dropping at an alarming rate. Situations of drought, crop failures due to changing climatic conditions – unseasonal rains, drought, excessive heat waves, etc. would leave poor farmers with the only option to sell their land. This may make land acquisition relatively easier in the short run but not without adversely affecting food prices and in majority of cases, social status of the farmers who will no more be landowners. Therefore, it’s very important for the policymakers to look towards the feasibility of leveraging arid land, wherever possible, over the fertile one. Given that India’s demand for electricity is only going to grow, it would be prudent to divert subsidy, tax sops, gap funding, etc. for solar projects, when time appropriate, in developing infrastructure to integrate solar plants on barren land with the grid promoting better land use. 
 
Sun would continue to help in photosynthesis as well as activating electrons in a PV. Therefore, it’s up to us to leverage technology for a Win-Win scenario. Maximizing the urban and rural rooftops would further reduce the pressure on acquiring farmlands to meet the 100 gig target.
