As edtech startups and unicorns lay off employees amid the funding winter, Gurugram-based higher <keyword id="6355445" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="education" source="Orion">education</keyword> platform <keyword id="4342812" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="sunstone" source="Orion">Sunstone</keyword> on Friday said it has raised $35 million (around Rs 280 crore) in a Series C funding led by <keyword id="678811" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="westbridge-capital" source="Orion">WestBridge Capital</keyword>. Founded by Ashish Munjal and Piyush Nangru in 2019, Sunstone had raised $28 million in October 2021. The startup said it will use the latest funding to expand into new programmes with a key focus on undergraduate tech programmes. "The Indian higher education system is at the brink of a long overdue transformation. Sunstone is well positioned to enable this change and impact the lives of millions of students," said Munjal, Co-founder and CEO. The latest funding round also saw participation from Alteria Capital. The company with presence across over 35 cities in more than 40 institutions is building capacities to expand into 100 cities across the country. Starting with post graduate management education, Sunstone ventured into undergraduate programs in 2022, registering a 10 times growth in the past two years. "Seeing the ever increasing demand and its potential to be a major disruptor, we are excited to double down our investment to support its (Sunstone's) mission of transforming the higher education sector in India," said Sandeep Singhal, Managing Partner, WestBridge Capital. Sunstone said its training programmes are industry endorsed to enhance employability, designed for hybrid delivery with focus on soft skills and personality development. Edtech startup Sunstone raises $35 mn in funding round led by WestBridge Capital

The stone is made of Iceland spar, a transparent, naturally-occurring calcite crystal that polarizes light and can get a bearing on the Sun, they said.
It was found in the remains of a ship that had been dispatched to France in 1592 by Queen Elizabeth I as a precaution against a second Spanish Armada but foundered off the island of Alderney, in the Channel.
British and French scientists have long argued that the find is a sunstone -- a device that fractures the light, enabling seafarers to locate the Sun even when it is behind clouds or has dipped below the horizon.
Sunstones, according to a theory first aired 45 years ago, helped the great Norse mariners to navigate their way to Iceland and even perhaps as far as North America during the Viking heyday of 900-1200 AD, way before the magnetic compass was introduced in Europe in the 13th century.
But there is only a sketchy reference in ancient Norse literature to a "solarsteinn," which means the idea has remained frustratingly without solid proof.
In a study published in the British journal Proceedings of the Royal Society A, investigators carried out a chemical analysis on a tiny sample, using a device called a spectrometer, which confirmed that the stone was a calcite.
The stone is about the size of a small bar of soap whose edges have been trimmed at an angle. In technical terms, its shape is rhombohedral.
It is milky white in appearance, and not transparent, but the new experiments show that this is surface discolouration, caused by centuries of immersion in sea water and abrasion by sand, the study said.
Using a transparent crystal similar to the original, the scientists were able to follow the track of the setting Sun in poor light, with an accuracy of one degree. In a second experiment, they were able to locate the Sun for 40 minutes after sunset.
Other factors provide evidence that this is a sunstone, according to the investigation, led by Guy Ropars of the University of Rennes, in France's western region of Brittany.
The crystal was found in the wreckage alongside a pair of navigation dividers. And tests that placed a magnetic compass next to one of the iron cannons excavated from the ship found that the needle swung wildly, by as much as 100 degrees.
Put together, these suggest the sunstone may have been kept as a backup to a magnetic compass.
"Although easy to use, the magnetic compass was not always reliable in the 16th century, as most of the magnetic phenomena were not understood," says the study.
"As the magnetic compass on a ship can be perturbed for various reasons, the optical compass giving an absolute reference may be used when the Sun is hidden."
The authors also note previous research that some species of migrating birds appear to have used polarized light from the sky as a navigational aid or to recalibrate their magnetic compass around sunrise and sunset.
How does the sunstone work?
If you put a dot on top of the crystal and look at it from below, two dots appear, because the light is "depolarised" and fractured along different axes.
You then rotate the crystal until the two points have exactly the same intensity or darkness.
"At that angle, the upward-facing surface of the crystal indicates the direction of the Sun," Ropars told AFP in an interview in 2011, when preliminary research about the Alderney stone was published.

Piyush Nangru, co-founder and COO, Sunstone said the gap between skills that graduates have and industry-required skills continues to persist. “There is an urgent need across the country for multiple stakeholders to remedy the industry and higher education gap,” he said. Amongst the domains, B Com, MBA and B Pharm graduates are found to be most employable. Whereas, Polytechnic and MCA graduates were the least employable. “Improving employability through higher education remains a challenge and can be attributed to many factors.The post-Covid era further requires realignment of the higher education curriculum, up-skilling practices, and training techniques,” Nangru said. Among cities, Mumbai has the highest overall employment percentage of candidates, followed by Lucknow and Mangalore. Currently, the share of women in India’s workforce at 33% — is much less than that of males at 67%. Whereas, in countries like South America, Asia, and Africa, women account for 36% of the workforce. At least half of the companies worldwide are planning to lay off people, most are reducing bonuses and rescinding job offers amid the economic downturn, a new report has warned. According to the latest <keyword id="53186" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="pwc" source="Orion">PwC</keyword> 'Pulse: Managing business risks in 2022' survey in the US, 50 per cent of respondents are reducing their overall headcount, even as business leaders remain concerned about hiring and retaining talent. "At the same time, respondents are also taking proactive steps to streamline the workforce and establish the appropriate mix of worker skills for the future," said the report that came out on Thursday. This comes as no surprise, after a frenzy of hiring and a tight labour market over the past few years, as "executives see the distinction between having people and having people with the right skills". "For example, 50 per cent of all respondents are reducing their overall headcount, 46 per cent are dropping or reducing signing bonuses and 44 per cent are rescinding offers," the report revealed. More than 32,000 tech workers have been laid off in the US till July, including at Big Tech companies like Microsoft and Meta (formerly Facebook), and the worst has not been over yet for the tech sector that has seen massive stock sell-off. In India, more than 25,000 startup workers have lost jobs since the pandemic began -- and more than 12,000 have been fired this year. The PwC report mentioned that these precautionary actions are more in certain industries. "Consumer markets and technology, media and telecommunications companies, for example, are more likely to invest in automation to address labour shortages," the PwC report mentioned. At the same time, healthcare is seeing bigger talent challenges than other industries and is more focused on rehiring employees who have recently left. The global consulting firm last month polled more than 700 US executives and board members across industries. With increasing economic uncertainty, 83 per cent of executives are focusing their business strategy on growth. That uncertainty has become the standard with business leaders feeling cautiously optimistic about their ability to navigate future economic, social and geopolitical uncertainty. "On the whole, this generation of corporate leaders have minimal experience navigating a recession, yet with the possibility of one looming amid increasing geopolitical divides and skyrocketing inflation, they are bullish on their ability to handle what could be ahead," said <keyword id="14759714" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="kathryn-kaminsky" source="Orion">Kathryn Kaminsky</keyword>, vice <keyword id="6415823" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="chair" source="Orion">chair</keyword>, trust solutions co-leader, PwC US. 50% of companies planning job cuts amid economic downturn: Report

The Ministry of Consumer Affairs recently pulled up edtech firms during a meeting with them and self-regulatory organisation India Edtech Consortium (<keyword id="306435" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="iec" source="Orion">IEC</keyword>) amid aggressive misselling of courses to parents. Trust me I am pushing my daughter to start learning coding, and do IIT JEE preparations with you guys, but she is just not willing to do so. Kids these days don't listen to their parents. She just wants to be an artist. So, please stop calling me to sell these plans/devices," Prashant <keyword id="445" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="sharma" source="Orion">Sharma</keyword>, who is into business development and a consultant with a penchant for storytelling, posted on LinkedIn. His post led to a barrage of similar situation being faced by parents all over the country, who are fed by constant aggressive selling of courses by the edtech representatives. <keyword id="14487485" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="srikant-ganesh" source="Orion">Srikant Ganesh</keyword>, Vice President at Dentsu Creative India, posted that he can totally relate to Sharma's experience. I believe BYJU's and WhiteHat's of the world realise that there's more to kids these days than just learning to code and yes! They have a mind of their own and no one can push them into something they are not inclined towards. This false sense of FOMO being created by such brands should stop and so should the calls," Ganesh lamented. After the Centre took serious note of mis-selling of courses to parents by edtech firms, self-regulatory organisation IEC said it is committed to protecting consumer interest and has resolved 100 per cent complaints received till June. However, fresh complaints surfaced on social media platforms this month, indicating that the problem has not been addressed in totality. "This happened to me. The sales representatives of #Byju's need to be trained to handle a 'No'. I have personally experienced this when a representative called my wife and she said that we don't want to enroll. He kept calling and then I had to intervene. He kept insisting that your child had been registered on their site, so how could we say No! He didn't seem to understand and finally I had to explain to him by activating my desi side. I registered my complaint on their site but it was removed the next day," posted Dheeraj Grover, Senior Manager, HR, at VVDN Technologies. Thangarathnavel M., Head of Business Development-South Asia at German company Covestro, said on LinkedIn that he could fully relate to it too. "I had enrolled my son 2 years back but it was not much of any use. Few months back I started receiving calls from them again to enrol my son for the physical classes. But even after saying no, the calls never stopped. Once I gave a piece of my mind to one of the callers and asked him to share the mobile number of Mr. BYJU. Now the calls have stopped coming. Hope they stop this forever," he described his plight. Earlier this month, the Centre warned edtech companies against unfair trade practices. In a meeting with the IEC, Consumer Affairs Secretary, Rohit <keyword id="255172" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="kumar-singh" source="Orion">Kumar Singh</keyword>, said that if self-regulation does not curb unfair trade practices, then stringent guidelines would be formulated for ensuring transparency. Natural Cycles, a Swedish-based company, has felt that pressure. In the summer of 2018, stories came out from The Guardian and TechCrunch about unwanted pregnancies after using the fertility app, Natural Cycles, and its thermometer.The headlines left some people nervous about using Natural Cycles. "We had pushback from midwives in Sweden around women getting pregnant," said Elina Berglund, a former European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN) physicist who cofounded the app with her husband."That is the downside of working with contraception. Since no contraception is 100%, there will always be pregnancies," she said. "We very much empathize with all women that experienced an unwanted pregnancy but that is unfortunately what happens."Even with the negative headlines in 2018, by December that same year, Natural Cycles became the first birth-control app to be FDA-approved as a contraceptive. And as part of an effort to capitalize on the potentially huge US market, Berglund and her husband now have an office in New York. Venture capital investors at EQT Ventures, E.Ventures, and Sunstone Ventures have backed the company, which has raised a total of $38 million. And Natural Cycles has used some of that money to help it scale up to 95 staff at one point, but today the headcount stands at 60-70. "[The negative coverage] had quite a big impact on the growth of the company," Berglund said. "Not so much on the ambitions though."The team is growing once again. Increasing the team size further will likely depend on whether Natural Cycles can convince large numbers of people that its an app they can trust.<h2>How Natural Cycles works</h2>Natural Cycles claims to be around 93% effective under typical use, and 98 or 99% effective under perfect use. That could make it more effective than condoms, less effective than implants, and just as effective as the birth control pill. "Unfortunately, some women will get pregnant on Natural Cycles because it's not 100% effective," Berglund said.But, one of the main selling points for Natural Cycles is that it doesn't alter the body in any way. There are no hormones, and no injections. Women measure the temperature in their mouths in the morning when they wake up and then they enter that recording into the app. The app identifies the woman's unique cycle and fertility status. "The algorithm runs in the background and returns a 'red day' if she needs to use protection that day because she might be fertile, or a 'green day' if she's definitely not fertile, and doesn't have to use protection," explains Berglund, who coded the app. Users can sign up from home and receive the thermometer in the mail, or they can buy it from certain stores. "We're in quite a few pharmacies, especially in Sweden," Bergland said. "We're also part of a program here in the US where we give Natural Cycles for free- to low-income women through certain clinics."<h2>Standing out in the market</h2>The app, which costs £49 per year or £6.99 per month in the UK, now has 1.5 million users worldwide. The UK has the most active users, with the US and Sweden behind them. "The US is where we are growing the fastest at the moment," says Berglund. The company's most successful innovations have come by considering their implications for users early in development. "Every product update and piece of research we conduct is prioritized based on how it will impact our users," Bergland said. "In the very few times we've strayed from this approach, the initiative fell flat."Enlisting input from "key opinion leaders" (KOLs) is also table stakes for health companies, which can be a difficult and labor-intensive process. "While the customer always comes first, it's not always about the customer," Bergland said. "We've learned that - oftentimes the hard way - and have made sure to make an effort with other KOLs within our space [including] doctors and midwives. It's not easy, but it's necessary."Berglund thinks American consumers are "a little bit different than the Europeans" and she's determined to figure them out. She's also meeting with the medical community as she looks to understand how to grow in the market further.

Negative press slowed Sweden's Natural Cycle's roll, but the contraceptive app company is gaining ground in the US

<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image">GetYourGuideGetYourGuide sells travel experiences worldwide.</div></div></div>A Berlin startup called GetYourGuide raised $50 million (£33 million) today for its online and mobile travel platform that helps travellers to discover and book travel activities worldwide.The company said in a press release that the series C funding round was led by New York-based investment firm KKR, with money also coming from new investor Nokia Growth Partners, and existing investors Spark Capital, Highland Capital Partners, and Sunstone Capital. The latest round brings total investment in GetYourGuide to just shy of $100 million (£66 million).The online travel startup, which employs more than 200 people, aims to provide a one-stop-shop for travellers to search, discover, book and digitally redeem travel experiences. The platform lists over 27,800 activities in more than 2,500 destinations. Activities include everything from a Segway tour of San Francisco, to fast-track tickets on the Eiffel Tower, to a river cruise in Shanghai.Since launching in Berlin in 2009, the company has opened offices in Las Vegas and Zurich.
