A corpus of Rs 1 lakh crore will be established with 50-year interest free loans to encourage the private sector to scale up research and innovation in sunrise domains, Union Finance Minister <keyword id="19916618" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="nirmala-sitharaman" source="keywords">Nirmala Sitharaman</keyword> announced on Thursday. Presenting the interim Budget 2024-25, Sitharaman said this will be a golden era for India's tech savvy youth. "A corpus of Rs 1 lakh crore will be established with 50-year interest free loan. The corpus will provide long-term financing or refinancing with long tenures and low or nil interest rates," the minister said. "This will encourage the private sector to scale up research and innovation significantly in sunrise domains. We need to have programmes that combine the powers of our youth and technology," she added. India's PC market grows by 2.6% in Q1 2024, recording third consecutive quarter with growth

Gandhinagar, <keyword id="7706673" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="finance-minister-nirmala-sitharaman" source="Orion">Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman</keyword> said on Wednesday exuded confidence that India will become the world's third largest economy worth over USD 5 trillion by 2027-28 and a developed nation by 2047, with GDP touching USD 30 trillion. India, with a GDP of roughly USD 3.4 trillion, is currently the fifth largest economy in the world, after the US, China, Japan and Germany. Sitharaman said during the Amritkal, which will mark 100 years of India's Independence in 2047, emphasis is being given to sunrise industries. Also, the FDI policy of the Narendra Modi Government has helped attract foreign investment, with USD 595 billion coming in the last 9 years. "It is possible that we will be the third largest economy by 2027-28, and our GDP will cross USD 5 trillion by that time. By 2047, it is a conservative estimate that we will reach at least USD 30 trillion in terms of economy," Sitharaman said while addressing a seminar of Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit 2024. Stressing that the people of India have met with the challenges post-COVID and recovery is on a strong footing, she said Gujarat will be the engine of growth in India's march to become a developed economy by 2047. The state has 5 per cent of India's population but contributes 8.5 per cent to the country's GDP. It is rapidly moving forward at 12 per cent CAGR (annual growth) between 2011 and 2021 against a national average of 10.4 per cent, the Union <keyword id="6355261" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="finance-minister" source="Orion">Finance Minister</keyword> said. Sitharaman said India is on track to become an in-house producer of semiconductors, and EV adoption is happening in a big way. All of these are the result of the FDI policy being pursued by the government. Between April 2000 and March 2023, in 23 years, India has attracted USD 919 billion in foreign direct investment (FDI). 65 per cent of this, or USD 595 billion, has come in the last 8-9 years, Sitharaman said. "FDI is coming in... where policies bring in greater certainty, convenience, ease of doing business, FDI flows in. Of course, disruptions of higher US Fed rate and other things can divert it elsewhere. But despite that, we have been receiving that kind of flow of the FDI. It is not as if it's coming only for manufacturing, it is coming in the service sector (as well)," she said. Speaking about financial inclusion, Sitharaman said 80 per cent of people have bank accounts. The number of bank account holders increased to 50 crore from 15 crore in 2014.

It's just about living within your means and not focusing on consumerism and capitalism, but rather enjoying the little things in life.I spent several years just trying to keep my head above the water, financially speaking, working manual jobs at Amazon warehouses.There's a book by Tim Ferriss called "The 4-Hour Workweek." When it came out in 2007, it was really revolutionary. He wrote about a bunch of things, but one of my favorite concepts was geographic arbitrage. Basically, you can enjoy the same standard of living, or even better, someplace way cheaper and way nicer.My long-term plan was to leverage my Amazon seniority and my skill set into getting transferred to one of our offices abroad. In 2016, I decided to write a five-year plan. It said that within five years I was going to move to a slightly more civilized country with better healthcare and a cheaper standard of living. And that I will be able to squirrel away enough money to set off on the most basic Lean FIRE retirement.I updated the plan every three months religiously and managed to accomplish the plan three months ahead of schedule, in May 2021.<h2>I tried to save almost half of my paycheck and sometimes contributed 90% to my 401(k)</h2>When I was living in Seattle, I did my best to save a big chunk of my paycheck.I was using almost every trick in the book. I would cook at home, I would use my little slow cooker to make some chicken, beans, and garlic, and eat it at work. I think it amounted to about $2 a portion, while all of my coworkers were going out to those food trucks.For example, there's this great huge light show in the sky twice a day every single day — the sunrise and sunset, but how many people actually stop to take a look? If they could charge you money for it, they would.I went to fun local events with my friends, different presentations and art gallery openings — and work presentations — to score free cider and snacks.I almost never bought new books or entertainment. I would just use a local library, which is a severely underappreciated resource.<div type="image" title="A man posing on snow in front of a National Park sign." height="2500" width="1875" msid="108248905" hostid="261" sizebytes="596466"></div>I would maintain a $3,000 emergency fund and put everything else that was left over at the end of the month into my taxable investment account. The percentage varied, but I believe every single month, I would save between 25% and 45% of my paycheck.Sometimes I would squirrel away enough money for a few months so that I could switch my 401(k) contribution from 10% to 90%.My paycheck would look absolutely hilarious. It would basically say $100 after all the fees and taxes. As long as you remember to flip it back to a 10% contribution, it was fine.<h2>I was able to supplement my income with relocation bonuses</h2>I never made even close to $100,000 a year.My salary was about $59,000, and then there would be a variable number of stock options. I was a low-level Amazonian. So if I could do it, anyone could do it.I started at Amazon in November 2009 as a temporary seasonal worker, packing boxes in Reno. I got a permanent position in May 2010 and transferred to Las Vegas in September 2011. In August 2012, I became a quality analyst in the ICQA (inventory control, quality assurance) department. I then transferred and helped launch Amazon's fulfillment centers in Fort Worth and Tampa, in the same quality analyst role. I transferred to Seattle and leveled up to the lowest corporate tier in August 2015: my job title became business analyst on PPT (Production Planning Team). In May 2017, I transferred to FBA (Fulfillment by Amazon) and worked there as an investigation specialist. With Amazon, when you work as a warehouse employee, every time they open a new warehouse somewhere else in the country, they give you a $10,000 cash bonus if you transfer there. They take away one-third for taxes right away, so basically, they give you $6,700 cash in your bank account. You have to figure out your own move and just show up in this warehouse. That's how I moved from Reno to Las Vegas to Fort Worth to Tampa, and then to Seattle.Over the course of three years, I tried to transfer to the UK — before Brexit — Poland, Canada, Australia, and then Canada again. And it finally worked. I got a transfer from Seattle to Toronto in March 2019, where I became a financial analyst attached to a nearby fulfillment center. That was an awesome road trip — I just shoved everything into my little Kia Rio.I spent about two years on a work permit until I got my permanent resident status. By then, it was 2021.I quit Amazon in May 2021. I spent 11-and-a-half years working for Amazon altogether. In 2020, I sold all of my Amazon stock, which I had been stockpiling for years. At the time, it was an all-time high and the only stock that was still going up. I used that money to invest in companies that were basically on sale, 50% or 60% off your shopping malls, cruise ships, airlines, and a couple of other companies like that. Within the years that followed, I believe my total return was 293%.<h2>I finally stopped working after moving to Canada, and it's way easier to save here</h2>I would highly recommend geographic arbitrage, or moving to other countries, to absolutely everybody — but I'm biased.Moving to another country was the foundation of my big plan. When I moved to Toronto, I took a 48% pay cut in my total compensation.I was only in Toronto because it was part of the plan to move to Canada. Once I didn't have to stay there because of Amazon, I finally had a choice to make for the first time in my adult life: I could move to any city I wanted to.<div type="image" title="A man taking a selfie." height="2048" width="1536" msid="108248907" hostid="261" sizebytes="282078"></div>In my personal opinion, aside from some similarities, Canada is suspiciously similar to the United States. There are some differences. Instead of guns, they have maple syrup; instead of miles, you have kilometers. But I didn't feel foreign enough. Quebec, on the other hand, was this mysterious province with its own alternate history. I visited Quebec City to do some apartment hunting and just absolutely fell in love.There are some provinces in Canada that have rent control, like British Columbia and Quebec, but Quebec enforces it a lot better than all the others. The cheapest cities to live in are in Quebec.When my lease in Toronto ended in September 2021, I packed everything up into a U-Haul trailer, sold my car, and moved to Quebec City.Saving here is infinitely easier. When I moved, my rent was all-inclusive for a nice large apartment on the second floor of a brick building next to the tourist sector. The rent was about 670 Canadian (or $493), and that's inclusive of electricity, fast internet — the whole thing. Now it's going up a little bit to 730 Canadian plus 40 Canadian for electricity ($567).You can't get anything in the States for that kind of money in terms of your own apartment in a brick, soundproof, building — just beautiful.The entire past year in 2023, I think I've only bought a few new material things: a couple of books, a new pair of jeans, and some socks, and that was it.I gain pleasure from simple things, like learning to cook with my Instant Pot is amazing. I enjoy a very nice healthy and balanced diet. Going out and having fun and all of that definitely fits into a $ 1,000-a-month budget, give or take.I would recommend everyone at least consider geographic arbitrage, if not to another country, then maybe another city or another state. I know a lot of people are rooted to where they are through their community, family, friends. But it's kind of like "Lord of the Rings" — it's little hobbits who are reluctant to leave their village until they absolutely have to.The first time you move is the most difficult, and then it just gets easier and easier every single time. Being this modern-day, nomadic vagabond is a lot of fun if you let it be.

<ul><li>Made-in-India drone companies are seeing a boost in sales post ban of drone imports by the government. </li><li>Consumer brands like Swiggy, Zomato, Dunzo and <keyword id="41887" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="biryani" source="Orion">Biryani</keyword> by Kilo have started launching trials for delivery by drones. </li><li>Drones are being used for defense, consumer and delivery purposes. </li><li><keyword id="1605364" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="throttle" source="Orion">Throttle</keyword>, a drone manufacturing company based out of Bangalore, witnessed a 150% growth. </li></ul>Declaring the Indian drone industry as a ‘sunrise sector’, the Directorate General of Foreign Trade, under the Ministry of Commerce, banned the import of drones in February. This has given a fillip to homegrown drone companies that are finding innovative uses for these unmanned aerial vehicles. One of India’s leading drone companies <keyword id="7785402" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="throttle-aerospace-systems" source="Orion">Throttle Aerospace Systems</keyword> (TAS) witnessed a 150% growth since the announcement. Even e-commerce companies like Dunzo, Swiggy and Zomato have ventured into the drone delivery space. Last year, Zomato acquired a drone startup <keyword id="6576859" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="techeagle" source="Orion">TechEagle</keyword> to build models that can help deliver essentials and possibly food in the near future. Medicines and Biryani from the sky <keyword id="2757817" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="rattanindia" source="Orion">RattanIndia</keyword>’s drone company Neosky in association with TAS, is now planning to also supply drones for e-commerce and consumer-led initiatives besides defence. The companies have partnered with Dunzo, leading hospitals in India and even grocery delivery for Instamart, by Swiggy. At present, they are manufacturing 30 drones per month, aiming to go upto 45-50 units in the near future. Consumer brands like Swiggy recently partnered with Garuda Aerospace and Throttle to launch doorstep deliveries for groceries through Instamart. Its trials have already begun across Delhi-NCR and Bangalore. Another startup Biryani by Kilo delivered Biryani to eight influencers post the launch of eight stores in Hyderabad. As of now, the drone space in India is extensively being used in the defense sector and helping with delivery of average payload commodities. “We can see consumer led drones picking up but before that we would need designated drone corridors by the government. As of now, drones would be extensively used in the defense sector or for average load deliveries. Though it is exciting to witness food being delivered by a drone, it is further down the future,” said Sarath Chandra <keyword id="14985844" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="gudlavalleti" source="Orion">Gudlavalleti</keyword>, CEO of Neosky. The government too had founded extended uses for drones. During the pandemic, a box weighing 12 kilos of medicines and 20 vials of vaccines was delivered to rural parts of Telangana through drones in an initiative called ‘Medicines from the Sky’. ‘Laws for this sector are still being made’ The government is taking active steps to boost domestic manufacturing of drones. On July 6, 2022, India’s aviation ministry released the second provisional list of 23 beneficiaries of the production-linked incentives (PLI) scheme for the drone industry. Combined annual sales turnover of PLI beneficiaries in the drone industry reached ₹3.19 billion in 2021-22 from ₹880 million the previous year. “A welcome change by the government was to stop drone imports which has boosted Make In India drone companies. Dividing India’s airspace into Red, Green and Amber zones has also helped. But laws for this sector are still being made as it is very new,” said Gudlavalleti. The Ministry of Civil Aviation has divided the Indian airspace into three zones- Green (no permission required), Amber (controlled airspace) and Red (no drones allowed). The government also launched a DigitalSky platform in January 2022 for verification of Made in India drones. The drone defender Through small steps, the Indian government is also opening the door for commercial use of drones during disaster management and even economic mapping. Beginning April 2022, all drone operators have been allowed to promote secure operations without needing multiple approvals by possessing a valid UIN. Throttle is one such beneficiary. On Thursday, RattanIndia through their drone company Neosky assisted with manufacturing company Throttle launched a ‘drone defender.’ It was unveiled by Minister General <keyword id="6364699" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="v-k-singh" source="Orion">V K Singh</keyword>, MOS Aviation Ministry at Air Force Auditorium during the ‘Unmanned Aerial Systems India 2022’ event on September 13. “This drone is 70% indegenious and launches a soft-kill against approaching rogue drones without any human intervention. Instead of using direct attack, this drone will pull down the attacker by shooting a net,” said <keyword id="14985845" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="nagander-ramaswamy" source="Orion">Nagander Ramaswamy</keyword>, CEO of drone manufacturing company TAS. “We have acquired a 60% stake in Throttle and hope to build our capacity further,” said Gudlavalleti. <ul><li><keyword id="6360806" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="customs" source="Orion">Customs</keyword> duty on equipment and machinery will remain the same to make EV batteries. </li><li>There was no mention of initiatives for charging infrastructure in the <keyword id="6358021" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="budget" source="Orion">budget</keyword> speech. </li></ul>There may be more pain than gain for EV makers and buyers from the Union Budget 2023-24. While the <keyword id="25455" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="finance" source="Orion">Finance</keyword> Minister did extend the customs duty exemption for capital goods and machinery for lithium-ion manufacturing for EVs, she did make importing auto parts costlier for all automobiles. The net net effect may be that EVs might become costlier going ahead. "To further provide impetus to green mobility, customs duty exemption is being extended to import of capital goods and machinery required for manufacture of lithium-ion cells for batteries used in electric vehicles," said finance minister <keyword id="129243" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="nirmala-sitharaman" source="Orion">Nirmala Sitharaman</keyword> in her budget address. The customs duty exemption is not a new initiative but an extension of the lower custom rates. This will help the local EV manufacturers keep the cost of products in check and also empower new players to manufacture battery cells and EVs. Customs duty on electrically operated vehicles in completely built units (CBUs) form, other than with cost, insurance and freight (CIF) value of more than $40,000 (approx. ₹32.76 lakh), has been raised to 70% from 60%. This could result in a slight increase in the prices of conventional and electric vehicles if imported in a partially disassembled state. To reduce dependency and boost local manufacturing, the basic custom duty (BCD) on vehicles (including electric vehicles) in Semi-Knocked Down (SKD) form also increased from 30% to 35%. It also encourages Indian EV to manufacture lithium-ion batteries within the country. “One of the biggest components of EVs is the battery and the Budget provides for customs duty exemption on capital goods import required for manufacturing <keyword id="1616903" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="lithium-ion" source="Orion">Lithium Ion</keyword> battery cells. This is one of the most capital-intensive areas in the entire value chain and should go a long way in improving the viability of batteries and the electric mobility sector," said Somesh Kumar, Partner &amp; Leader- Power, EY India. Industry players also welcome the announcements, calling it a positive step for the fledgling Indian EV industry. “The announcement in the Union Budget of extending concessional duty for lithium-ion cells will give an impetus to Indian manufacturers. Last month, the Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/auto/news/modi-government-to-add-137-ev-charging-stations-on-national-highways-nitin-gadkari/articleshow/96253707.cms">provisioned</a> 137 charging stations on national highways, and many state governments are taking initiatives to provide charging infrastructure.

EVs that import parts to get costlier as Budget gives a boost to in-house manufacturing

The EV logistics company will be expanding its driver partner workforce from 3,000 to 6,000 this year. The new delivery partners will help the company to empower and enhance sustainable delivery capabilities, the company hopes. “Being a working woman for 16 years now, I understand the importance of financial independence. Through Zypp, I have created a domain for myself and I aim to create similar opportunities for women across in this sunrise sector. I believe that only an inclusive future is a sustainable future in any sector…,” said Rashi Agarwal, cofounder and chief business officer at <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/news/this-ev-startup-mobycy-went-from-solving-last-mile-commute-to-delivery/articleshow/82513392.cms">Zypp Electric</a>. The company claims that they keep priority of its <keyword id="7170604" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="women-delivery-partners" source="Orion">women delivery partners</keyword> towards other roles and responsibilities by giving them desired and flexible working shifts along with fair financial aid. It further says that it is also working on a long term goal to have at least 50% of the total employee strength to be women. According to an ASSOCHAM report, which came out in January 2020, India's gig economy is projected to grow to $455 billion by 2023. Zypp Electric raised around $7 million in a Series A round funding from 9unicorns and Anthill Ventures last year in September. The company has so far raised $12.5 million. Founded in 2017, the company claims that it is on a mission to make India carbon-free by using an ecosystem of electric Vehicles and EV-based technology to make last-mile logistics sustainable and emission-free. Its business model is to make carbon-free last-mile delivery for local merchants to e-commerce giants to delivery executives and thereby reduce delivery cost and pollution on an asset-light model.
