Something similar happened to Sunil Mittal, founder of Bharti Airtel who became an entrepreneur at the age of 18 with a bicycle parts manufacturer. There was a time when Sunil Mittal fell short of ₹5,000 in the 1980s but this roadblock didn’t stop him from creating India’s largest conglomerate. He received more than $350 million in dividends in FY19, according to Bloomberg. Mittal and Mukesh Ambani are in the news for their fierce rivalry over supremacy in the telecom market. But, there was a time when Mittal was almost the undisputed king of the market. Sunil Mittal lost nearly a billion dollar the year after Jio launched. Meanwhile, Vodafone Idea lost 5 million subscribers whereas Sunil Mittal-led Airtel lost 0.6 million users. The debt-laden BSNL too lost 0.2 million subscribers.

 At his AGM in August, Ambani said that his <a href="https://gadgets.ndtv.com/telecom/news/reliance-jio-340-million-subscribers-agm-2019-announcement-2083822">target </a>is to expand Jio’s user base to 500 million. It is adding roughly 8 million users every month. This seems to put him in a comfortable position to hit the target. Since January, Jio added 58.8 million users. Vodafone Idea lost 40.15 million subscribers, whereas Airtel lost 12.4 million users. Reliance Jio added 60 million users so far this year while Vodafone Idea lost 40 million

<keyword id="6354924" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Idea-Cellular">Idea Cellular</keyword>, the Indian mobile network operator based in Mumbai, might spend a whopping $1.3 billion (Rs 8,627 crore) to buy data spectrum in key Indian markets in the upcoming auction that is supposed to take place around July. On the other hand, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Bharti-Airtel-fights-off-Idea-ties-up-with-Videocon-for-radio-frequencies/articleshow/51444310.cms" target="_BLANK￿￿￿￿">Bharti Airtel</a>, the leader in the market, might choose to buy selective 4G airwaves in the coveted 700 Mhz band in a few circles, as they are cheaper than the 900 Mhz spectrum.

As per the Telecom Commission, the approved base prices of 700 Mhz spectrum in UP-East, UP-West and Bihar are at Rs 459 crore, Rs 384 crore and Rs 248 crore, respectively. These figures are considerably less than the reserve price of 900 MHz spectrum in the same circles, which are at Rs 776 crore (UPEast), Rs 739 crore (UP-West) and Rs 444 crore (Bihar).

Idea might spend more than Rs 8600 crores in the July spectrum auction

India’s biggest mobile operator, <keyword id="6354287" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bharti-Airtel">Bharti Airtel</keyword>, has filed a First Information Report (FIR) against its former employee for stealing confidential data to help upcoming Reliance Jio Infocomm. 
 
Bharti Airtel alleged that Yasir Majid, who left the company in April this year, had copied and downloaded confidential information for the possible use of Jio before leaving the company. 
 "(Yasir Majid) after having been relieved from the services of the company (Airtel), took up employment with M/s <keyword id="1661076" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Reliance-Jio-Infocomm-Ltd-">Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd.</keyword>..It thus became evident that the said Mr Yasir Majid downloaded, copied and extracted the aforementioned confidential financial data/information of the company for his own use and the use thereof by his current employer M/s Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd., who is a business competitor of the company," said the FIR filed by the police, a copy of which was viewed by Economic Times. 
 
Majid had joined Jio on April 27 this year and the report is dated June 22, filed in the Infocity police station in Bhubaneswar. 
The FIR stated that the confidential information was valuable for the business competitor of the company, which could be used to form its business strategy. 
 
The said data included details of locations of Airtel's base stations used to transmit airwaves and plans for future installations of such equipment. 
 
News report in ET stated that the data was highly confidential and had financial information about the company's BTS wise activation gross revenue details for the Jammu &amp; Kashmir service area. A power point presentation used at the zonal business manager's meeting on February 15 was also there. 
 
Majid, who was with the company for nearly 10 years in Jammu &amp; Kashmir, was transferred to Odisha on March 2 as the distribution head of the circle. Majid subsequently resigned his position on April 13, to be effective April 24. 
 
"As a responsible corporate, Reliance Jio lays the greatest emphasis on ethical conduct by all its employees. It is an integral part of our Corporate Value System. We will inquire into this matter," a spokesperson for Reliance Jio Infocomm said in a statement. 
 
Speaking to ET, Majid denied any wrongdoing. "I have already told Airtel twice today (Wednesday) that I did not transfer any data. I have done nothing illegal. They (Airtel) said they will again have a chat with me tomorrow (Thursday)." He added that Jio authorities hadn't spoken to him on this matter. 
 
Airtel will face a tiff competition from Mukesh Ambani-owned Jio, which will launch commercial 4G operations during December.

Sunil Mittal replaces Terry McGraw to become the new chairman of ICC

New Delhi, Dec 19 () Billionaire Sunil Bharti Mittal on Thursday said a combination of rock-bottom tariffs and high consumption is killing the telecom industry and sector regulator Trai needs to urgently intervene to strike a balance between the needs for protecting investments and consumer interest.
 "...but, I think we need to have a balance between requirement of investments and consumer on the other side," Mittal, chairman of Bharti Airtel, told reporters after a pre-Budget meeting between Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and corporate leaders.
 "My view is Rs 200 ARPU (average revenue per user) is eventually going to Rs 300 ARPU... At the lower end, Rs 100 for a customer over a month of consuming rich data, voice and other services and on the upper end Rs 450-500... therefore, blended eventual landing point of Rs 300 a month, which will still be USD 4 a month... by far, the lowest anywhere in the world and yet consuming two or three times more data than anywhere else in the world," Mittal said.
 The industry needs to get to that balance, he said adding that Trai needs to work on this as the industry "has not been able to have an orderly mechanism to get to that point".
 "We are unnecessarily killing this industry in a manner and way that is not conducive for our industry, and that's why we need Trai intervention," Mittal added.
 The comments of the Airtel chief come just days after the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) initiated talks to prescribe floor price for call and data, and also deferred by one year the scrapping of the charge paid by mobile phone users for calls made to rival networks.
 The two moves came as a big boost to Airtel and Vodafone Idea that are staring at a liability of thousands of crores in unpaid past statutory dues following a Supreme Court ruling. Through their association, the operators had been pitching to the government for fixing a floor rate for calls and data.
 The telecom call and data rates are at present under forbearance or not regulated.
 But, earlier this week, Trai released a consultation paper to fix minimum or floor rates for mobile phone calls and data, a move that will effectively end the regime of free calling and dirt cheap data.
 The outcome is likely to lead to further hike in mobile call and data cost as the industry wants average revenue per user to reach Rs 300 per month from about Rs 125 at present over a period of two years -- better revenue realisation per user will offer a much-needed breather to the stressed telecom industry where debt levels have soared to Rs 7.8 lakh crore.
 Bharti Airtel had posted a staggering Rs 23,045 crore net loss for the second quarter ended September 30, due to provisioning of Rs 28,450 crore in the aftermath of the SC ruling on statutory dues.
 According to government data, statutory liabilities in the case of Bharti Airtel add up to nearly Rs 35,586 crore, of which Rs 21,682 crore is licence fee and another Rs 13,904.01 crore is the SUC (spectrum usage charges) dues (excluding the dues of Telenor and Tata Teleservices). RSN RKL MBI HRS

As the US under President Donald Trump turns more protectionist, telecom czar Sunil Bharti Mittal today asked if India should say no to <keyword id="6354576" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Facebook">Facebook</keyword> and <keyword id="6355629" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Google">Google</keyword> just because it has similar homegrown app, according to <keyword id="6367495" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="PTI">PTI</keyword>. Not overly concerned about protectionism as his business is "rooted in the domestic market", Mittal highlighted that it is unfair that movement of Indian workers gets restricted, while foreign firms make huge profits in India. "If you come to a situation where skilled workers which actually drive your economy back home are going to be denied (entry) or Indian companies are forced to pay a particular salary just to become uncompetitive in those countries, I think that becomes an affirmative action against the companies that want to do trade there," he said. He was responding to a question on how he would react if <keyword id="6354287" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bharti-Airtel">Bharti Airtel</keyword> was not allowed to operate in certain geographies. Citing examples of tech firms like Google, Facebook and WhatsApp that have millions of users in India, Mittal questioned if these companies should be allowed to operate in India even as similar homegrown apps are already there in the country. "You can't have (a situation) that on one hand and you have 200 million customers on Facebook, 150 million on WhatsApp, 100 million people on Google... Would we say we don't want FaceBook (and) Google to operate in India, we have homegrown apps," the Bharti <keyword id="15491" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Airtel">Airtel</keyword> Chairman said. Mittal said India is a big market for technology companies given the huge consumer base. Over the past few weeks, countries like the US, Singapore and Australia have taken steps to tighten their work visa norms. This could potentially impact the operating costs for Indian IT companies that send employees to work on client sites using visas.
