It’s been almost two centuries since the first electric vehicles were conceptualised, and yet, the 21st century is recognised as a rebirth for the segment. Despite early success, electric vehicles (EV) fell short in the race against commercial petrol and diesel vehicles. But now, fuelled by the rising concern for environmental sustainability, EVs have come back and are poised to make the internal combustion engine (<keyword id="51841" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="ice" source="Orion">ICE</keyword>) a thing of the past in the next few decades. To celebrate the benefits of EVs in shaping a better future for the people and the planet, September 9 is marked as <keyword id="9906589" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="world-ev-day" source="Orion">World EV Day</keyword>. It is a global movement to drive change, celebrate e-mobility, and promote sustainable transport. On this occasion, we caught up with <keyword id="8864" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="gul-panag" source="Orion">Gul Panag</keyword>, a popular Indian actor, producer and entrepreneur. She has been a champion of sustainable lifestyle practices for decades and promotes using electric vehicles to combat climate change and air pollution. <keyword id="6483814" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="gul" source="Orion">Gul</keyword> has started a new chapter in her entrepreneurial journey by co-founding <keyword id="12598233" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="sunfuel-electric" source="Orion">Sunfuel Electric</keyword>, a start-up that aims to provide seamless charging experiences for electric vehicles across <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword>. “I was fascinated by the fact that even the first generation EVs, around 7-8 years ago, are 98% efficient (in terms of energy utilisation). Compare this to the ICE (age), where even the most efficient ones are about 42-45%. My primary vehicle for commute is electric for the last seven years. Building on his management experience, he ventured into this sustainability-oriented business to contribute to climate action. “Sustainable practices in most cases are also efficient practices like we see with the EVs vs fossil fuel engine. This is the core axiom, and everything else can be built on it. More efficiency can be translated into cost-effectiveness. So, I advise young entrepreneurs to convey this message to the consumers. As the book ‘The 48 Laws of Power’ says, appeal to their self-interest, and not to their mercy,” explains Sudhir. The EV landscape in India is gaining momentum, backed by state incentives, proven viability of EVs, and the growing trend of greener lifestyle choices among Indians. As the government aims to have 30% of vehicles sold in India be electric by 2030, the EV market in India is expected to be valued at $2 billion by 2023. As the battery costs drop gradually, most consumers realise the long-term cost benefits of owning an EV. Companies like Sunfuel are now stepping up to address the concerns around charging infrastructure. “There is a great opportunity for behavioural modification in the EV space as well. At Sunfuel, we have three pillars: city, highway, and destination charging. The decision for one’s next car can be influenced by the availability of charging stations at the places one frequents. The early adopters have the potential, aided by media, to be accelerators and force multipliers of the change we desperately need now!” narrates Gul. The statistics show that the transition is no longer gradual, but is happening at an exponential pace. The share of EVs in the global automobile market doubled in just one year, from 2020 to 2021. With more than three lakh units sold in 2021, India is catching up fast. Some environmentalists even say that buying a fossil fuel-intensive vehicle in the 21st century is a crime against humanity. But this transition must be aided with sufficient infrastructure on the ground to make it sustainable and long-lasting. World EV Day reminds us to think again before opting for a fossil fuel vehicle and promote sustainable mobility as the future of transportation! World EV Day: In conversation with actor, entrepreneur Gul Panag on India’s transition to electric mobility

<ul><li>Hotels across India are now installing EV charging stations across India. </li><li>96% of Indian travelers say that sustainable travel is important to them. </li><li><keyword id="165027" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="radisson" source="Orion">Radisson</keyword> Blu Plaza Delhi International Airport launched an EV charging point on <keyword id="9906589" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="world-EV-day" source="Orion">world EV day</keyword>. </li><li>The approximate cost to fully charge a 90 kilowatt electric vehicle is ₹4,000. </li></ul>More <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/india/news/indian-consumers-are-packing-their-bags-to-travel-to-goa-and-bali/articleshow/93393370.cms">Indians</a> are travelling post pandemic and hotel chains are prepping for it – with many of them adopting more sustainable practices to attract the increasingly eco- conscious <keyword id="159493" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="gen-z" source="Orion">Gen Z</keyword> and millennial travellers even as they do their bit to help cut emissions and mitigate growing climate risks. One of the steps being taken is the installation of electric vehicle (EV) chargers in the hotel premises to promote sustainable tourism. According to a Global Sustainable Tourism Council <a href="https://www.gstcouncil.org/india/#:~:text=According%20to%20research%20conducted%20by,travel%20again%20in%20the%20future.">report</a>, 96% of Indian travellers identified sustainable travel as important to them. Currently, India has a total of 1,640 operational public EV <a href="https://www.pib.gov.in/PressReleasePage.aspx?PRID=1799464#:~:text=Currently%2C%20India%20has%20a%20total,account%20for%20approximately%20940%20stations.">chargers</a> but private companies are also helping to install EV chargers. In Delhi, for instance, travellers staying at the <keyword id="6301371" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="radisson-hotel-group" source="Orion">Radisson Hotel Group</keyword> at Mahipalpur can now charge their 2-wheeler or 4-wheeler EVs on premises. An EV charger developed by Sunfuel Electric was installed in the hotel’s premises on Friday to mark World EV Day. This is an extension of the group’s partnership with Sunfuel last year to set up EV charging infrastructure across its portfolio of over 100 hotels in South Asia. “There has been an increase in travel in cars since the pandemic and we are catering to that population. There is a Radisson hotel every four hours, and we are positive that this will solve range anxiety amongst EV owners. The hotel group aims to install at least four EV chargers in each hotel ranging from Kashmir to Kanyakumari,” said Zubin Saxena, managing director, South Asia at Radisson Hotel Group. Other premium chains are also encouraging electric vehicle usage by installing chargers on premises — a move that will help reduce range anxiety among tourists, particularly avid travellers exploring the length and breadth of the country in their electric vehicles. For instance, Marriott International has partnered with ChargeZone to install 100 EV charging stations across India in June. amã Stays &amp; Trails, a unit of <keyword id="6383232" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="indian-hotels-company" source="Orion">Indian Hotels Company</keyword> (IHCL), joined hands with <keyword id="45008" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="tata-power" source="Orion">Tata Power</keyword> in December 2021 to install 30 EV chargers across 30 destination villas in India. Boosting EV infrastructure could go a long way in reducing carbon emissions while also helping the hotel chains meet their net-zero goals. “Sustainable and green transportation could take away 14% of carbon reduction globally. Radisson aims to achieve net zero emission by 2050. There is a huge misconception that green infrastructure is costly. Over 95% of travellers in Asia Pacific say they want to travel sustainably. The need to promote sustainable travel is complemented with the rise of EVs, especially in India,” said <keyword id="14942891" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="inge-huijbrechts" source="Orion">Inge Huijbrechts</keyword>, global senior vice president sustainability, Radisson Hotel Group. Pay for EV charging like a metrocard Hotel chains are trying to make sustainable travel attractive by helping to widen the electric vehicle charging infrastructure and optimising charging costs for the travellers. For instance, Sunfuel Electric will provide OTC cards for paying for EV charging on the hotel premises. To fully charge a KIA EV car that draws 77kw of electricity, it would approximately cost ₹4,000 and take 7 hours, costing ₹2 per kilometre, claims Sunfuel. “We already have 60 plus chargers across India and aim to install 300 chargers within the next three months. You can also recharge the OTC card like a metrocard to pay for EV charging with one tap. At Radisson, we will begin with one charger each first,” said Sudhir Nayak, co-founder of SunFuel Electric. Having used an electric car for seven years now, actor and former pilot <keyword id="8864" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="gul-panag" source="Orion">Gul Panag</keyword>, head of partnerships at Sunfuel said, “Don't let anyone tell you climate change is irreversible. Electric vehicles are 95% efficient technology.
