Probably too much sun. But maybe it's more than that. Maybe he's trying to tell us something?</li></ul><p>When is a tan line just a tan line? And when is it something else?</p><p>This is, admittedly, not one of the most important questions facing the country at this particular moment.</p><p>But it was one I had Tuesday, when I saw a new <a target="_blank" href="https://www.threads.net/@rowancheung/post/C9xPmHcpfiN?xmt=AQGz7-kz2QENnTYMfbnTXXP-qJcOdnKkTBVuXKc4e8GNhw">video interview with Mark Zuckerberg</a>. The Meta chief was talking about the newest release of <a target="_blank" href="https://llama.meta.com/">Llama</a>, his open-source AI model, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mark-zuckerberg-meta-llama-ai-model-praise-open-source-musk-2024-7">which people seem excited about</a>.</p><p>But I was much more interested in Zuckerberg's appearance, which you can see at the top of this post: He seemed as if he'd had some kind of tanning-bed mishap.</p><p>I don't think Zuckerberg is a tanning-bed kind of guy (though I guess it's possible it's a component of his <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mark-zuckerberg-new-look-haircut-2024-2">mullet</a> + <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/rapper-swag-zuck-has-gone-too-far-2024-5">chain + swaggy ensemble</a> makeover he's been working on this year). But he is a guy who spends time thinking about the way people perceive him. Hence, his <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mark-zuckerbergs-style-evolution-in-photos-2024-6#he-made-waves-on-independence-day-when-he-surfed-on-his-hydrofoil-while-wearing-a-tuxedo-10">hydrofoiling in a tux with an American flag and a beer photo</a> from earlier this month.</p><p>So maybe his sunburned raccoon look was meant to mean … something?</p><p>I shared the image with some tech-savvy friends and got an immediate response from <a target="_blank" href="https://www.matthewball.co/">Matthew Ball</a>, the analyst and investor: "Those are from Orion," he theorized.</p><p><a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/meta-reveal-first-ar-glasses-fall-connect-conference-2024-2">Orion is Meta's internal name for a new augmented-reality device</a> the company has been working on for some time, at great expense.</p><p><a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mark-zuckerberg-meta-ar-holographic-glasses-prototype-2024-6">Zuckerberg has yet to fully show Orion off in public, but he's been talking the tech up recently</a>. But it's good!" <a target="_blank" href="http://pple.com">he promises</a>.</p><p>So. Maybe Zuckerberg's tan lines were an Easter egg: Does he want us to know that he's been taking Orion out in public — or perhaps when he's out <a target="_blank" href="https://www.threads.net/@zuck/post/C9skzsrSbtj?xmt=AQGz7-kz2QENnTYMfbnTXXP-qJcOdnKkTBVuXKc4e8GNhw">rowing</a>?</p><p>There are lots of ways for a journalist to pose that question to Meta executives. Mark Zuckerberg says his weird tan is just a tan &mdash; not a hint about a new product.

<p class="drop-cap">The sunburned man with an FTX hat and a Topo Chico strawberry guava hard seltzer in each hand was disappointed. “He’s not naked,” he said to no one in particular, with open disgust. “No hog.”</p><p>Before him and 20,000 others in the stadium, a shirtless man had jumped from the stands and was sprinting toward the putting green. He front-flipped into a bunker and landed flat on his back, making a sand angel as the crowd roared. Then he darted between police and cacti, swinging his arms along the way to cajole the crowd to cheer more.</p><p>His display pleased some. But this was Saturday at the 16th hole of Phoenix’s Waste Management Open, also known as the loudest day at the Loudest Hole in Golf, <em>also </em>known as the Greatest Show on Grass. At 1:28 pm, the stadium’s more sober patrons were already about seven drinks deep. They or their employers had paid good money — in some cases <a target="_blank" href="https://www.azcentral.com/story/sports/golf/phoenix-open/2024/02/09/priciest-seats-wm-phoenix-open-cost-24000-dollars-steps-from-16th-tee-pga-tour/72542147007/#"><u>down-payment-on-a-house</u></a> money — to see something depraved. A streaker who was still wearing pants wasn’t going to cut it.</p><p>“Booooo!” a man in the deck above me yelled. “Take it all off!”</p><p>“Show your dick! Show your dick!” chanted a trio of gentlemen in their thirties — Vuori pullover, black Patagonia jacket, and a white Oxford — whose law firm had purchased seats in the box next to me.</p><p>But there’d be no hog to see. The streaker was apprehended and arrested, prompting rowdy jeers; the crowd was outraged to see justice served.</p><p>The letdown was short-lived. A few minutes later, a DJ set up shop on a tee box and started playing Creed’s “Take Me Higher” as a montage of Scott Stapp sauntering, F/A-18s taking off in “Top Gun: Maverick,” and Iron Man being awesome played on the Jumbotrons. It had the distinct tone of a hype video a dad with a rudimentary proficiency in Final Cut would make for his 9-year-old son’s birthday, where the party’s theme was “Rad” — and it was <em>exactly</em> what the grown men of the stadium wanted and needed. They watched, enrapt, while they sipped Coors Lights and High Noons and stacked a <a target="_blank" href="https://x.com/MrAzSports/status/1756078060515049532?s=20"><u>beer snake</u></a> toward heaven.</p><div type="image" title="A shirtless man holds a &quot;beer snake,&quot; or stacked plastic cups, at the Phoenix Open." height="3917" width="5875" msid="107670054" hostid="261" sizebytes="892724"></div><p>“Scott Stapp, man,” said a voice behind me, wistfully. “We’re so back.”</p><p>In theory, this was a professional golf tournament, one of the oldest on the PGA Tour. There was said to be a $9 million purse, and the winner would take home $1.5 million. Occasionally, something would float in from the periphery that suggested the golf could be real: There was a leaderboard, an NBC broadcast of the tournament playing behind every bar, and a group of hedge fund and private equity guys who were taking dozens of prop bets and writing them on a white board they seemed to have brought from the office. There were even flesh and blood golfers who passed by every few minutes, the crowd booing whenever their shot missed the green, and groveling, screeching, barking, grunting, and yipping whenever it inched toward the hole. How they needed to see a ball go into that hole. </p><p>But in the haze of Topo Chico strawberry guavas, Miller Lites and vodka sodas, the weed, the rain and the mud, the hooting, howling, and the grabassing, no one could be sure they were at a professional sports event. Every other data point suggested that, in reality, they had slipped into exactly where they wanted to be: a black hole of feral manhood. </p><p class="drop-cap">Iwas there as an inevitable result of being in all-male group chat, its own black hole of feral manhood. A Phoenix native in our group of college friends had scored box seats at a discount. For months, the group had been goading one another about how unhinged our pilgrimage would become, sharing clips of obscene spectacles on 16 from years past, along with stories of unhinged behavior in the news cycle — the Alabama man who jumped naked in the Bass Pro Shop aquarium, a resurfaced photo of George Bush drinking Michelob with mustachioed men — and captioning each “us on 16.” We even proposed an official cocktail for the trip, an amalgam of all the viral drinks of the past year: 1 part pumpkin-spiced spiked Dunkin, 1 part spiked Mountain Dew Baja Blast, 1 part Magical Penis Wine, shaken, and filled with Panera’s Charged Lemonade. </p><p>Most of us are married, with young children, and nearly old enough to run for president. None of us follow golf closely. But the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.golfdigest.com/story/waste-management-drunk-guy-walking"><u>tournament</u></a> is <a target="_blank" href="https://www.azcentral.com/story/sports/golf/phoenix-open/2018/01/31/waste-management-phoenix-open-streaker/1084895001/"><u>infamous</u></a> for a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.azcentral.com/story/sports/golf/phoenix-open/2015/01/31/sewage-backed-up-fan-zone-waste-management-phoenix-open/22659121/"><u>reason</u></a>, its reputation for rowdiness seemingly multiplying the rowdiness each passing year, and its slurring siren song was too tempting to pass up.</p><div type="image" title="Two people dressed as Oompa Loompas at the Phoenix Open." height="4000" width="6000" msid="107670056" hostid="261" sizebytes="2794486"></div><p>I could hear the vibes as soon as I landed in Phoenix. In the 10 minutes I waited for my friend to pick me up, the entire pick-up area echoed with daps, vigorous back pats, and chants of “the boys!” as carloads full of the aforementioned boys were reunited for the weekend. </p><p>The following morning, upon picking us up at 8am, our Lyft driver said, “Welcome to the chaos, brothers.” He’d been shepherding people to and from the tournament for more than a decade, and he had one piece of unsolicited advice: “Stay away from the assholes at BlackRock in the box seats, and you’ll be alright.”</p><p>At the entrance, the tournament offered its lone nod to decorum: a giant sign across an overpass that reads <em>RESPECT THE FANS. RESPECT THE PLAYERS. RESPECT THE GAME.</em> More than 200,000 would stumble under the sign; a few would abide by it. Several thousand had lined up outside the gate around 3 am to partake in a Running of the Bulls at 5:30, when the coveted generation admission seats on 16 opened.</p><p>At 10 am, we scanned into the stadium with our wristbands. Though they repeated the overpass mantra, they were also our gateway to 10 strongly poured alcoholic beverages, like a Livestrong bracelet that doubles as a vape pen. Also, the 10-drink cutoff was a very gentle suggestion. Bartender after bartender told group after group, “If you take care of me, I’ll take care of you.” I watched several men in their 40s and 50s tip hundred-dollar-bills after each round, and their wristbands were never scanned. For many, 10 soon became 20, which became face-planting into a urinal.</p><p>With drinks in hand, we left to stroll around the course. Few were watching golf; most were huddled in circles many yards from the 16th hole, drinking and people-watching. Men outnumbered women, conservatively, 7 to 1. Countless bros wore the standard uniform of a golf cap, a quarter-zip pullover (often Barstool), and khakis. Every SEC team was well-represented. There were men in fitted pink suits, Happy Gilmore Bruins jerseys, and American-flag-patterned shorteralls; four men dressed like Thomas Jefferson; a man standing alone in camo hoodie with “Assholes Live Forever” emblazoned on the back; men in MAGA hats and BlackRock hats; men in their forties in jungle animal onesies; and a bachelor party full of men wearing red chef hats that read “Let Him Cook.” The overall tableau was akin to Mardi Gras meets the “ass to ass” scene in “Requiem for a Dream.”</p><div type="image" title="A man dressed as a founding father takes a selfie" height="2400" width="3600" msid="107670059" hostid="261" sizebytes="463614"></div><p class="is-empty is-editor-empty">Traipsing through the throngs, I overheard a succession of things that forgotten people from your childhood might say to you in a NyQuil-induced dream. “Jesus Christ, did you see the 17-inch waist on that one? Lord have mercy,” said one man to his boys. “When I met Johnny, he didn’t have a pot to piss in. I was his pot,” said a woman. Mostly, I heard the boys talking about how good it is to be out in the desert with the boys. “Isn’t this the fucking best?” said one. “Dude, how good is this? Blunts and mud,” said another.</p><p>Torrential rain from the past two days had turned the course into a 200-acre mudslide. Dozens of men and women were sliding down hills, many of them deliberately and shirtlessly. A few fights were breaking out. Not far from the 11th rough, a young woman was hunched over in a miniskirt in the sand, crying. She was receiving oxygen from an EMT in a golf cart, seated beside a cactus and a puddle of her own vomit.</p><p>It seemed like as good a time as any to return to the belly of the beast.</p><p class="drop-cap">Outside the stadium on 16, the lines for general admission seats were hundreds of people deep. Few had any chance of getting in: Those who were already inside had been drinking nonstop for six hours, and weren’t going to leave unless they were dragged out. Why were so many spending their day on a mission they knew was going to fail? One gentleman voiced his divine wish to his friends: “There’s gonna be one special girl in there who shows her titties. That’s worth the wait.”</p><p>Inside our box, golf continued to happen, but if the golfers weren’t teeing off, no one was watching the course. A man in his 50s approached a group of four women in their early 20s from ASU’s law school and said, “Do you girls pay attention to technology?” He spent three minutes explaining his AI startup before they walked away. </p><p>At one point, weaving my way through the crowd toward my seat, a man in a ponytail put his face toward my face and touched my glasses. “Hey, Potter,” he said like an after-school special bully, “just use your wand to get through!” I felt both debased and anointed, a perfect 16 experience.</p><p>To visit the toilets was to realize fully that no sporting event embodies its name as cosmically as the Waste Management Open. They stood in an unlit room at the end of a long, wet, musty, unlit hal. By 2:00, the plastic urinals — a green, eight-foot-tall structure where four men at a time pee toward each other — were overflowing, urine spilling onto mud-soaked All Birds. Nearly every Porta Potty around the perimeter was filled with cans of hard seltzers. It was incredibly brave of Waste Management to put their logos on those toilets. </p><div type="image" title="Muddy cup" height="1600" width="2400" msid="107670061" hostid="261" sizebytes="703140"></div><p>By 4 pm, word spread that the patrons had become so unruly tournament organizers <a target="_blank" href="https://twitter.com/WMPhoenixOpen/status/1756424253262733425"><u>closed the entrance gates</u></a> and stopped serving alcohol across the course. There was a mild panic. The day before, a woman had been hospitalized after falling off a balcony on 16. Players and pundits argued that the notorious “shitshow” had become too much of a shitshow, that the waste could no longer be managed, and everyone’s safety was at risk. But as several rushed to the bar, they quickly realized that only the plebes were screwed. For the elites — those lucky enough to have a box — the drinks were still bottomless. “We don’t give a shit what happens down there,” said one bartender in an après ski outfit. A couple of minutes after 6 pm, a tournament official blew an air horn. The mass had ended. The sunset was immaculate — orange-purple halos hugging billowing violet clouds. The man in the FTX hat who wanted to see hog was missing it. He had been asleep for half an hour, and it looked like he pissed himself.</p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="133010" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="MLB">MLB</keyword>'s new policy strictly enforces bans on sticky substances like sunblock for pitchers. </li><li><keyword id="338162" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Roger-Clemens">Roger Clemens</keyword> thinks the policy will cause a pitcher to get <keyword id="6355291" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Cancer">cancer</keyword> if they can't use sunblock.</li><li>Clemens pitched in the major leagues for 23 years and admits he regularly used sunblock and rosin. </li></ul><p>Major League Baseball's <a href="https://www.insider.com/mlb-to-screen-pitchers-to-catch-people-using-banned-substances-2021-6">new policy</a> that strictly enforces bans on sticky foreign substances has already affected the performance of a handful of pitchers, but it could also affect their long-term <keyword id="6354750" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="health">health</keyword>, according to one former Cy Young winner. </p><p>Roger Clemens, who pitched in the majors for 23 seasons from 1984-2007, said MLB's stance on sunscreen as a banned foreign substance would cause at least one pitcher to get cancer from prolonged unprotected sun exposure. </p><p>"If you can't use sunblock and rosin, I think down the road you're going to hear a couple things. You're going to hear some major league guy getting sun cancer on the back of his ears or something, and then you're going to have a massive lawsuit," Clemens told Insider. "Because that's all you need, a little sunblock and rosin, and you got enough tap between sweat and everything else."</p><p><keyword id="28956" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="skin-cancer">Skin cancer</keyword> has been an <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/nationals/skin-cancer-is-an-often-overlooked-hazard-in-baseball/2014/05/29/5576987e-e750-11e3-afc6-a1dd9407abcf_story.html">overlooked danger</a> for baseball players for years. Hall-of-Famers Johnny Bench and Mike Schmidt each had skin cancer, and now that MLB is enforcing its ban on sunscreen use among pitchers, skin cancer dangers may only worsen. </p><p>MLB put its <a href="https://www.insider.com/mlb-to-screen-pitchers-to-catch-people-using-banned-substances-2021-6">new policy</a> into effect on June 15, which requires umpires to regularly inspect pitchers for banned substances, and levies harsh penalties against any players caught using the substances, including a 10-game suspension. </p><p>Pitchers have historically mixed sunscreen and rosin to create a substance that improves grip on the baseball. The improvement to grip, in turn, helps pitcher deliver pitches more accurately and with a higher spin rate on the ball. </p><p>Clemens, an 11-time All-Star who won seven Cy Young awards and two World Series championships with the <keyword id="130401" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="New-York-Yankees">New York Yankees</keyword>, admits that he used sunscreen and rosin throughout his career. In particular, sunscreen was crucial for him in improving his control of the ball and protecting his skin during the summer months. </p><p>"When it got hot, I definitely put sunscreen on and rosin," Clemens said. "It's a disservice to some guys. You need three things in pitching. You need to locate, you need movement, and last is velocity. But now it's flipped around, and it seems like velocity is the only thing people look at it if you line up that radar gun."</p><p>This season could prove to be a poor choice to deprive pitchers of sunscreen. A summer heatwave across the United States broke records in multiple states, with temperatures above 100 degrees Fahrenheit for days on end in some places in June, according to <a href="https://www.climate.gov/news-features/event-tracker/record-breaking-june-2021-heatwave-impacts-us-west">Climate.gov</a>.</p><p>The record-breaking heat has come with dangerous levels of Ultraviolet (UV) radiation, which causes sunburn and potentially leads to skin cancer if exposure is frequent enough. </p><p>The <a href="https://www.epa.gov/newsreleases/check-uv-index-stay-safe-sun-106000-new-skin-cancer-cases-estimated-united-states-2021">American Cancer Society</a> (ACS) estimates that more than 106,000 new cases of melanoma - the most dangerous form of skin cancer - will occur in 2021 due to overexposure to UV radiation as heat levels rise. Regardless, if you know the risks and use it correctly, aromatherapy may be worth trying.</p><h2>Does aromatherapy work?</h2><p>Aromatherapy may help relieve stress, but study results are mixed and more concrete research is needed, says <a href="https://vibrantdoc.com/meet-dr-stephenson/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Stacie Stephenson</a>, DC, CNS, <a href="https://www.cancercenter.com/stacie-stephenson" target="_blank" rel="noopener">chair of functional medicine for Cancer Treatment Centers of America</a>. Trattner does not recommend using eucalyptus oil directly on the skin as it can cause irritation, but you can add a couple drops of this to a shower for a spa-like feel.</li><li><strong>Peppermint</strong>. This scent may be beneficial in <a href="https://www.thieme-connect.com/products/ejournals/html/10.1055/s-0037-1607119" target="_blank" rel="noopener">relieving headaches</a>. And new technology means you can find the right sports bra for any cup size. Additionally, clothing can now help you withstand any type of weather, rain or shine. </p><p>However, all these choices can also make it more difficult to decide what's right for you. Here is a guide to running apparel so you no longer have to guess what's best to wear for your runs. </p><h2>How to find the best running shoes for you</h2><p>It is important to find the right pair of running shoes for your feet because ill-fitting sneaks <a href="https://health.uconn.edu/orthopedics-sports-medicine/2017/08/12/finding-the-right-running-shoe/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">may cause injury or even hinder your performance</a>.   </p><p><a href="https://www.mcmillanrunning.com/andrew-lemoncello/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Andrew Lemoncello</a>, a certified running coach and former Olympian, says that every runner should begin their search for the perfect pair of shoes by focusing on how the shoe initially feels on their own foot — and this process may take a little bit of trial and error. </p><p>"Go into a specialty running store, explain your needs and what kind of athlete you are, and try on eight to ten pairs of shoes," he says. Once you find a shoe that feels good on your foot, learn what materials it is made from so you can explore similar options.</p><p>Lemoncello says that most specialty running shoes give owners the option to return them after a couple of runs. This is important because "if you are going to be logging a few hundred miles on these shoes, you don't want to be stuck with a shoe that causes you discomfort," he says.</p><p>Here are some factors you should consider when looking for the perfect pair of running shoes: </p><h3>Lightweight vs. cushioned shoes</h3><p>Highly cushioned shoes tend to feel softer and squishier on your foot than shoes with less cushioning. But, more padding may cause more impact loading, which is the amount of force exerted on your foot when it strikes the ground. Impact loading is associated with a variety of running injuries including <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6237638/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">stress fractures and inflammation of the heel.</a></p><p>A small 2018 <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-018-35980-6#Sec5" target="_blank" rel="noopener">study</a>, published in Scientific Reports, of 12 healthy men found that when compared to conventionally cushioned shoes, those with maximum cushioning increased impact loading. That's because running shoes with extra cushioning interfered with normal "spring-like" running movements, causing participants to run more stiffly, the researchers reported. </p><p>Additionally, the study found that impact loading increased with <a href="https://www.insider.com/how-to-run-faster" target="_blank" rel="noopener">faster speeds</a> for runners wearing highly cushioned shoes. At slow speeds cushioning actually reduced impact loading. Therefore, if you're a sprinter, you might want to especially avoid all that extra cush. </p><p>Another <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4482302/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">study</a>, published in 2015 in Sports <keyword id="6354750" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="health">Health</keyword>, found that running efficiency improved in 15 experienced runners when they ran in minimally cushioned shoes — or even barefoot — when compared to normally cushioned shoes. </p><p>Lemoncello says there may also be a mental benefit to running in lightweight shoes: "Switching from heavier running shoes to lightweight ones can make your feet feel like feathers, and that's going to have a really good effect on your mind when you are running." </p><p>Ultimately, the ideal amount of cushioning in a pair of shoes depends on a runner's preference. "What works for you may not even work for someone who is exactly the same height, weight, or type of runner as you," Lemoncello says, so don't be swayed entirely by others' reviews.</p><h3>Arch height</h3><p>The arch of your foot is the area between the ball and the heel. The height of your foot arch will play a major role in determining the right running shoe for you. Arch issues commonly occur in runners with two types of feet:  </p><ol><li><strong>Flat feet: </strong>Runners with very flat feet may experience symptoms such as <a href="https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/flatfeet/symptoms-causes/syc-20372604" target="_blank" rel="noopener">pain or swelling on the inside of the ankle</a> — both of which can worsen with increased activity. People with flat feet may want to look for wide running shoes with a low heel that offers extra arch support.</li><li><strong>High arches: </strong>Runners with high arches may experience foot pain because their weight is not evenly distributed across their soles. Unlike flat feet, people with high arches tend to <a href="https://medlineplus.gov/ency/article/001261.htm#:~:text=High%20arch%20is%20an%20arch,the%20opposite%20of%20flat%20feet." target="_blank" rel="noopener">feel all the pressure on their ball and heel</a>. Therefore, people with high arches may want to consider running shoes with cushioned soles because they can help distribute body weight across the foot and <a href="https://uihc.org/health-topics/high-arches-you-dont-have-live-pain" target="_blank" rel="noopener">relieve excess pressure and foot strain. </a></li></ol><p>Lemoncello recommends that runners with arch issues try to find a structured running shoe that fits their needs before adding in <a href="https://orthoinfo.aaos.org/en/treatment/orthotics/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">orthotics</a>, which are padded inserts for the heel that help with arch support. "Adding more volume to your shoe can increase the likelihood that you may experience even more issues," he says.</p><p>If you do use inserts, order your shoes in a half size up or buy a wider pair. If you are trying on shoes in a store, always bring any inserts with you to see how it affects the feel of the shoe. </p><h3>Materials </h3><p>Lemoncello says the two most popular materials to look out for in running shoes are engineered mesh and knit uppers: </p><p><strong>Engineered mesh:</strong> "Shoes with <a href="https://support.brooksrunning.com/hc/en-us/articles/360028381031-What-is-Engineered-Mesh-" target="_blank" rel="noopener">engineered mesh</a> are custom designed around the needs of the foot," says Lemoncello. Since mesh is tightly woven around the foot, it creates a snug, but breathable feeling in the shoe. </p><p><strong>Knit uppers: </strong>The <a href="https://www.asics.com/za/en-za/blog/article/anatomy-of-a-running-shoe" target="_blank" rel="noopener">"upper"</a> is the part of the shoe held together by the laces. Knit uppers are a lightweight and breathable fabric that "provide runners with a really nice freeing stretch," says Lemoncello. He says there are a few downsides to the material  — it tends to be expensive and overly flexible, lacking enough support for some. "They may be better suited for beginner runners that are not logging as much distance but want to feel really comfortable while running," he says.</p><h3>Fit</h3><p>Lemoncello says that differences in foot shape and bone structure will determine whether people prefer to run in looser or tighter fitting shoes. </p><p>For example, if the tops of your feet are unusually tender, it could mean that the tendons in that area are irritated and you may want to try loosening your laces. Wicking materials <a href="https://www.rei.com/blog/hike/what-does-moisture-wicking-mean#:~:text=How%20Moisture%2DWicking%20Fabrics%20Work,and%20the%20fabric's%20internal%20surfaces.">work</a> by pulling moisture, usually sweat, away from the skin and towards the outer layer of the clothing. This helps it evaporate quickly, keeping you dry and warm. </p><p>Some examples of moisture wicking fabrics include: </p><ul><li>Nylon</li><li>Polyester</li><li>Propylene</li><li>Spandex</li><li>Wool</li><li>Bamboo</li></ul><p><strong>How to wear it:</strong></p><p>Layering is essential for cold weather running. Fortune suggests wearing a tight base layer with wicking materials and a breathable outer layer with wind protection. For extremely cold weather, add an extra mid-layer for insulation.</p><p>Also, make sure to cover your ears with a headband, hat, or earmuffs, and bundle your hands in gloves or mittens. "There's less blood flow to the extremities and you want to be sure to keep them covered and warm," says Fortune. </p><p>Lastly, a good rule of thumb for cold weather running is that you should feel slightly chilly when you walk out the door, says Fortune. If you are comfortably warm, you've most likely overdressed and will want to remove layers of clothing as soon as you get moving. </p><h3>Warm weather </h3><p><strong>What to wear:</strong></p><p>Moisture wicking fabrics are also great for warm weather runs because you're probably going to sweat a lot and the material pulls that sweat away, which <a href="https://engineering.mit.edu/engage/ask-an-engineer/why-do-we-sweat-more-in-high-humidity/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">cools your body in the process</a>.</p><p>So, wearing these types of clothes will keep you cooler, drier, and less prone to chafing.</p><p>"As your body temperature heats up, performance suffers," says Fortune. "The longer you can stay cool, the better you will perform."</p><p>You may want to consider wearing <keyword id="9878539" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="workout-apparel">workout apparel</keyword> with <a href="https://www.insider.com/do-uv-protection-shirts-work-2017-8" target="_blank" rel="noopener">extra UV protection</a> if you're running in the sun to avoid getting burnt. Fortune says this is a great option to stay cool, "as long as you're using sunscreen and some anti-chafing lubricant, as you'll likely be dripping with sweat."</p><h3>Rainy weather </h3><p><strong>What to wear:</strong></p><p>Fortune recommends wearing <a href="https://www.gorewear.com/us/en-us/about-us/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">GORE-TEX</a> products for running in a drizzle since they're designed with expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE) — a patented material that is incredibly lightweight, waterproof, and wind resistant. </p><p>One piece of gear Fortune always wears in the rain is a snuggly fitting wicking cap — which are basically baseball caps for runners. "Getting rain drops in the eyes is not fun and can really limit your vision," he says. "The cap helps to protect my eyes making sure I can see my footing which keeps me safe from slips and falls."</p><p>For added safety measures, wear reflective clothing in a storm to make yourself more visible to cars. You also may want to consider purchasing a water resistant pouch to carry your phone during rainy weather runs.</p><p><strong>How to wear it: </strong></p><p>Wear one breathable water resistant jacket over tightly fitted clothing. Fortune advises to keep the fabric under your jacket to a minimum and snug so there are less damp clothes hanging around your body while you are on your run. </p><h2>How to find the right sports bra for you</h2><p>According to the University of Portsmouth <a href="https://www.port.ac.uk/research/research-centres-and-groups/research-group-in-breast-health#resources" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Research Group in Breast Health</a>, breasts can move in three directions — up and down, side to side, forward and backward — during runs, shifting an average of ten centimeters. If breasts are not properly supported, this movement can cause <a href="https://www.researchgate.net/publication/321890362_Comparison_of_breast_motion_at_different_levels_of_support_during_physical_activity/fulltext/5a385aa1aca272a6ec1e8510/Comparison-of-breast-motion-at-different-levels-of-support-during-physical-activity.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">back, neck, and breast pain</a>.</p><p>"The more regularly we run, the more movements our breasts experience and this can affect the skin and muscles in the area as well as overall comfort levels," says <a href="https://www.onepeloton.com/instructors/BecsGentry" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Becs Gentry</a>, a certified running coach and Peloton Tread instructor. </p><p>A proper fitting sports bra can help reduce breast movement, which will make your runs more enjoyable, and also relieve breast pain. </p><p>There are <a href="https://www.rei.com/learn/expert-advice/sports-bras.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">three main types</a> of sports bras, all of which can be purchased at most athletic wear stores: </p><ol><ol><li><strong>Compression:</strong> This style of sports bra flattens your breasts together and pushes them toward your chest. Gentry says that this type of bra only limits forward and backward movement of breasts. These sports bras also tend to wear through quickly because they don't have clasps and stretch out overtime.</li><li><strong>Encapsulation: </strong>This type of sports bra has two separate cups providing individual support for each breast. Encapsulation sports bras can help <a href="https://www.researchgate.net/publication/278589544_Comparison_of_vertical_breast_displacement_between_two_different_sports_bra_designs" target="_blank" rel="noopener">limit vertical displacement</a>, or the vertical bounce you may experience while running. Vertical displacement is "known to be the most uncomfortable type of displacement the breasts go through while running," says Gentry. These types of sports bras may also have underwire which can offer extra support runners with large breasts. </li><li><strong>Combination: </strong>These sports bras incorporate both elements of compression and encapsulation. These are great for runners because they limit both horizontal and vertical movement of breasts. </li></ol></ol><p>A 2010 <a href="https://journals.lww.com/acsm-msse/Fulltext/2010/07000/Breast_Elevation_and_Compression_Decrease.13.aspx" target="_blank" rel="noopener">study</a> published in the Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise examined a group of 20 women with large breasts that exercised three times each in a separate style of bra. These included a standard encapsulation bra, an experimental bra with elevation and compression, and a placebo bra. They found that women felt more comfortable during runs while wearing the experimental sports bra than a standard high-support encapsulation sports.</p><p>Choosing a strap style for your sports bra depends on personal preference and best fit will vary with body type.
