Before the decline, the investment through the route had been on an increasing trend since July because of a slump in prices of oil and other commodities and relative outperformance of Indian equity markets. Participatory notes (P-notes) are issued by registered Foreign Portfolio Investors (FPIs) to overseas investors who wish to be part of the Indian stock market without registering themselves directly. They, however, need to go through a due diligence process. According to Sebi data, the value of P-note investments in Indian markets --- equity, debt, and hybrid securities -- stood at Rs 96,292 crore at December-end, as compared to Rs 99,315 crore at the end of November. The investment level through the route was at Rs 97,784 crore at October-end, Rs 88,813 crore at September-end, Rs 84,810 crore at August-end, Rs 75,725 crore at the end of July. It was at Rs 80,092 crore at the end of June. Investment via P-notes normally moves in line with <keyword id="725142" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="fpi" source="Orion">FPI</keyword> investment. When there is a global risk to the environment, investment through P-notes increases and vice-versa. "FPIs are finding Indian markets as expensive compared to other emerging markets and ours is probably the only market where they would have made profits last year. This would be a good time for them to book profits and look for cheaper valuations elsewhere. As FPIs start taking out money, a similar trend will be observed with the P-Notes, though the outflow might not be that significant," JARVIS Invest Founder and CEO <keyword id="2885089" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="sumit-chanda" source="Orion">Sumit Chanda</keyword> said. Of the total Rs 96,292 crore invested through this route till December 2022, Rs 86,351 crore was invested in equities, Rs 9,855 crore in debt, and Rs 86 crore in hybrid securities. Stock markets have been subdued in the run-up to the Union Budget with BSE's benchmark Sensex is almost flat so far this month. Even the corporate earning season failed to excite the markets, while some indices like IT and bankex have seen some positive movements. The muted performance of the markets could be due to Foreign Portfolio Investors (FPIs) moving funds out of India as they are looking for emerging markets with cheaper valuations. They have taken out over Rs 16,500 crore from domestic equities so far this month. Moreover, inflation and possible global recession continue to play on investors' minds. Narendra Solanki, Head- Equity Research Anand Rathi Shares &amp; Stock Brokers, said that investors are expected to remain focused on three key factors from the pre-election year Budget 2023, firstly equity investors are expecting a uniform tax structure for capital gains which might help taxpayers to have more disposable income. Secondly, investors will be looking for fiscal consolidation which is necessary for financial stability in the economy and thirdly, investors are contemplating policy reforms to rationalise bottlenecks for growth such as subsidies, a clear roadmap for disinvestment targets and expediting the much-awaited PSU privatisation or consolidation, he added. History suggests India's shares are likely to see muted trading ahead of the union budget reading, usually held on February 1. Overall, the pre-budget rallies were seen in six out of the last 10 years, and post-budget, the market declined six times out of the past 10 years. Moreover, the National Stock Exchange's (NSE) benchmark index Nifty 50 has fallen seven times on Budget days. The Budget is a presentation of the state of affairs of the government's books along with anticipated expenses and income for the coming year. It is generally believed that if a Budget includes measures that are seen as positive for businesses and the overall economy, it may have a positive impact on stock markets. On the other hand, if a Budget includes steps that are seen as negative for businesses and the economy, it may have a negative impact on stock markets. Additionally, announcements or changes in interest rates, taxes and government spending can also impact stock markets. "The impact of the <keyword id="2407175" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="upcoming-budget" source="Orion">upcoming Budget</keyword> would depend on the actual budget proposal and markets will be keenly watching the fiscal deficit for FY24. A figure above 6 per cent will disappoint the market. But, this is unlikely," VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Financial Services, said. He further said that a proposal that can have a negative impact on the market can be a possible hike in the capital gains tax. Any positive news which will have a meaningful impact on the economy or leave more disposable income in the hands of the salaried class and/or the corporates will push the markets higher, Sumit Chanda, Founder and CEO, JARVIS Invest, said. "Any changes to the tax slab of the salaried class or any incentive to the corporates for capex or reduced taxes will be viewed positively and one can expect the markets to rally post the Budget," he added. In addition, push to private and government spending, disinvestment, expanding the PLI (Product-linked incentive) scheme and relief in tax slabs are some of the measures that may have a positive impact on the market, Kamlesh Shah, President, ANMI, said. Geojit's Vijayakumar believes that the impact of the Budget will be short-lived. Market trends would be dictated more by developments in the global economy, particularly in the US. If the Fed commentary after the February 1 meeting is dovish and data shows inflation declining in the US, markets will rally. Amar Ambani, Head - Institutional Equities, Yes Securities, said the government is likely to be modest in its asset monetization targets, unlike the lofty projections of the prior Budgets. In all probability, India's GDP growth target would be a low double-digit affair amid a challenging global backdrop, and the government would not stray from its fiscal prudence roadmap. According to market experts, healthcare, fertilizer, infrastructure, defence insurance, manufacturing, digitalisation (IT), communication, education, Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) etc are sectors that are expected to benefit from the Budget. Stock market investors expect balanced budget, focus on job creation, infra spending

According to Sumit K. Chanda, professor and director of the Immunity and Pathogenesis Programme at Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute, the scientists have gained new insights into how the virus exploits the human cells it invades. "We are still searching for its Achille's Heel so that we can develop optimal antivirals," Chanda said in a paper published in the journal Molecular Cell. Knowing which genes help control viral infection can greatly assist researchers' understanding of factors that affect disease severity and also suggest possible therapeutic options. The genes in question are related to interferons, the body's frontline virus fighters. Soon after the start of the pandemic, clinicians found that a weak interferon response to SARS-CoV-2 infection resulted in some of the more severe cases of Covid-19. This knowledge led Chanda and his collaborators to search for the human genes that are triggered by interferons, known as interferon-stimulated genes (ISGs), which act to limit SARS-CoV-2 infection. "We found that 65 ISGs controlled SARS-CoV-2 infection, including some that inhibited the virus' ability to enter cells, some that suppressed manufacture of the RNA that is the virus's lifeblood, and a cluster of genes that inhibited assembly of the virus," Chanda explained. "What was also of great interest was the fact that some of the ISGs exhibited control across unrelated viruses, such as seasonal flu, West Nile and HIV, which leads to AIDS". The team also identified eight ISGs that inhibited both SARS-CoV-1 and CoV-2 replication in the subcellular compartment responsible for protein packaging, suggesting this vulnerable site could be exploited to clear viral infection. "This is important information, but we still need to learn more about the biology of the virus and investigate if genetic variability within these ISGs correlates with Covid-19 severity," said Laura Martin-Sancho, a senior postdoctoral associate in the Chanda lab. As a next step, the researchers will look at the biology of SARS-CoV-2 variants that continue to evolve and threaten vaccine efficacy. Indian-origin scientist spots genes that fight Covid infection

A global team of scientists has identified 21 existing drugs that stop the replication of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. Notably, four of these compounds were found to work synergistically with <keyword id="8775508" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="remdesivir">remdesivir</keyword>, a current standard-of-care treatment for Covid-19, said the study published in the journal Nature. "Remdesivir has proven successful at shortening the recovery time for patients in the hospital, but the drug doesn't work for everyone who receives it. That's not good enough," said senior author of the study Sumit Chanda, Professor at Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute in California, US. "As infection rates continue to rise in America and around the world, the urgency remains to find affordable, effective, and readily available drugs that can complement the use of remdesivir, as well as drugs that could be given prophylactically or at the first sign of infection on an outpatient basis." In the study, the research team performed extensive testing and validation studies, including evaluating the drugs on human lung biopsies that were infected with the virus. They also evaluated the drugs for synergies with remdesivir, and established dose-response relationships between the drugs and antiviral activity. Of the 21 drugs that were effective at blocking viral replication, the scientists found 13 have previously entered clinical trials for other indications and are effective at concentrations, or doses, that could potentially be safely achieved in Covid-19 patients. Two are already approved by the US Food and Drug Administration: astemizole (allergies), clofazamine (leprosy) and remdesivir has received emergency use authorization from the agency (Covid-19). Four worked synergistically with remdesivir, including the chloroquine derivative hanfangchin A (tetrandrine), an antimalarial drug that has reached Phase 3 clinical trials. "This study significantly expands the possible therapeutic options for Covid-19 patients, especially since many of the molecules already have clinical safety data in humans," said Chanda. "This report provides the scientific community with a larger arsenal of potential weapons that may help bring the ongoing global pandemic to heel." The researchers are currently testing all 21 compounds in small animal models and "mini lungs," or lung organoids, that mimic human tissue. If these studies are favourable, the team will approach the US FDA to discuss clinical trials evaluating the drugs as treatments for Covid-19. "Based on our current analysis, clofazimine, hanfangchin A, apilimod and ONO 5334 represent the best near-term options for an effective Covid-19 treatment," said Chanda. "While some of these drugs are currently in clinical trials for Covid-19, we believe it's important to pursue additional drug candidates so we have multiple therapeutic options if SARS-CoV-2 becomes drug resistant."
