New Delhi, Apr 22 () A 60-year-old man who had attended a congregation of the Tablighi Jamaat here last month and is suspected to have been infected with coronavirus died at an isolation centre in Sultanpuri in northwest Delhi on Wednesday, officials said. A group of people at the centre have alleged negligence by the authorities saying the man was diabetic and that he did not get the required medical attention on time, a senior police official said.The administration has, however, denied the charge and said the man did not reveal in his medical history that he suffered from diabetes. "Whenever a patient is brought to the COVID-care centre, we take down his medical history. The patient never mentioned about him being diabetic," an official said. He said a probe has been ordered to ascertain veracity of the allegations. "The cause of death will only be ascertained after his post mortem report comes," a senior official said. The deceased was brought to the centre on Monday from the Rajiv Gandhi hospital here and also underwent a COVID-19 test, officials said, adding that his reports were awaited.On Wednesday, at around 8 am, the patient complained of chest pain and restlessness and he was attended to by a team of doctors stationed at the centre.At around 10 am, his condition deteriorated and he died before he could be taken to the nearest hospital.Following the death, a crowd gathered and raised objections. However, police intervened and made way for the body to be shifted from the centre, the police official said.The police officer said no complaint has been received in this regard.They said the man hailed from Tamil Nadu and had attended the Tablighi Jamaat's congregation at Nizamuddin in March where many people are suspected to have contracted coronavirus apparently from foreign delegates. Officials at the hospital said nearly 762 people with mild symptoms of coronavirus were recently moved from the LJNP, GTB and Rajiv Gandhi Super Specialty hospitals to the centre at Sultanpuri in northwest Delhi. Man who attended Tablighi Jamaat event dies at COVID-19 isolation centre in Sultanpuri

New Delhi, June 16 () It has been more than a week that Ankit Kumar and his mother Poonam Dev have been shuttling between home, hospital and police station hoping to get an update on his father's condition who "was taken away in an ambulance on May 24". The father, Ram Dev (60), suffers from tuberculosis. He had trouble breathing for the last few days, according to Kumar, a resident of Ashok Vihar. "The local dispensary informed authorities about my father. An ambulance arrived at our home and took him to Sultanpuri COVID Care Centre. The medical staff pasted a poster on our gate and asked us to remain in isolation for 14 days," he said. The situation took a curious turn after three-four days. A person called the family from the COVID care centre in Sultanpuri twice during the isolation period, and enquired about the health of their father, Kumar said. "We were shocked. It is the COVID care centre which should have informed us about his health. They started asking us instead," he said. "It left us in a dilemma whether to complete our quarantine period or go out looking for my father," Kumar said, adding that when they called a COVID helpline they were asked to strictly follow the norms and stay put at home. After completing the mandatory quarantine period, Kumar and his mother went to the Sultanpuri facility where officials told them that Ram Dev had been shifted to Lok Nayak Jaiprakash Hospital. "When we approached the hospital authorities, no one told us clearly where my father was," Kumar said. It is only when the mother-son duo threatened to make a video and upload it on social media that a doctor intervened and informed them that the father was in ward number 30. "When we asked him to make my father talk to us on the phone or record a video so that we know he is there, alive, the doctor said it was not possible," he said. "One day, they said he was in ward number 30. The next day they said he was in the ICU," Kumar said. The family has been living on whatever ration their neighbours and relatives provide them. "My mother used to sell tea opposite the Deep Cinema. Now the stall is closed since the lockdown began. We spend around Rs 250 everyday on travelling between home, hospital and police station. My maternal uncle gives us some money, but for how long?" he said. On Saturday, Poonam Dev approached the Kamla Market police station, alleging that the hospital staff had not been sharing information about her husband's health. A policeman spoke to the hospital staff, who assured help, but nothing has happened so far. An officer at the police station said the case doesn't fall under their purview and that a policeman had offered to help the woman on humanitarian grounds. New Delhi, Mar 9 () The Delhi government on Tuesday allocated Rs 1,550 crore in budget for the development of unauthorised colonies in the city. Presenting the budget for the financial year 2021-22, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, who also holds the portfolio of finance, said so far, construction work has been completed or is in progress in 1,345 out of 1,797 unauthorised colonies of Delhi. For the development of unauthorised colonies, Rs 1,550 crore has been allocated, he said. Sisodia lauded the efforts of Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB) and said all the slums of NDMC, SDMC and EDMC have been declared 'Open Defecation Free'. It has provided 674 Jan Suvidha Complexes with 21,586 western seats. The deputy chief minister said in 619 slums, 10,16,531 metre of concrete pavements and 250 kilometre of drains have been constructed. Twenty-one slum development centres have also been built. Reiterating the government's commitment to providing 'Jahan Jhuggi, Wahan Makaan', Sisodia said in Sultanpuri, the work of allotting 1,060 houses to the people living in the nearby slum settlements is in the final stage. Apart from this, the construction of 784 multistoried houses for the economically weaker section has started in Dev Nagar, Karol Bagh. Delhi govt allocates Rs 1,550 crore in budget for development of unauthorised colonies

New Delhi, Apr 27 () Ten members of Tablighi Jamaat, who attended its congregation and tested positive for COVID-19 have come forward and donated their plasma to treat severally-ill coronavirus patients in the national capital. Sources said those who have come forward to donate their plasma have recovered from COVID-19 at the Sultanpuri and Narela quarantine centres. Many more have volunteered to donate their plasma, they added.The Tablighi Jamaat, a religious organisation in south Delhi's Nizamuddin came under intense attack for the spread of coronavirus after it allegedly organised a congregation after the lockdown and even when the Delhi government had imposed curbs before it.In the therapy, transfusion of plasma from recovered patients to severally-ill COVID-19 patients is conducted. Convalescent plasma is an experimental procedure for coronavirus patients.Sources said several Tablighi Jamaat members at different quarantine centres have also volunteered to donate their plasma for the recovery of COVID-19 patients.The move comes after an appeal was made by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal last week to patients, who have successfully recovered from coronavirus, to donate their plasma for treatment of COVID-19 patients.Kejriwal said the initial results of plasma therapy on critically-ill COVID-19 patients have shown "encouraging" initial results.Last week, Tablighi Jamaat head Maluana Saad Kandhalvi also appealed to the organisation's followers who have recovered from the infection to donate their plasma.A Delhi government official said the process of taking plasma from the Tablighi Jamaat members has started.According to Dr Mohammad Shoaib, who is facilitating the exercise, till now, 10 Tablighi Jamaat members have donated their plasma to help other coronavirus patients.Shoaib said he is not related to the Tablighi Jamaat, but he is acquainted with its followers. He also claimed that the Delhi government requested him to involve Tablighi Jamaat followers to donate plasma.The exercise commenced on Sunday evening after the iftar at Sultanpuri and Narela quarantine centres following which a team from the Delhi government's ILBS Hospital and another private hospital visited the premises, he said. The Tablighi Jamaat congregation which took place in March was attended by nearly 9,000 people, including foreign nationals. After that hundreds of Tablighi Jamaat followers were quarantined at different centres and many were booked for alleged misbehavior with the staff there. On April 18, at a daily media briefing about the COVID-19 situation in the country, Lav Agarwal, Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Health, said, "A total of 4,291 COVID-19 cases or 29.8 per cent of the 14,378 coronavirus infections reported till that day were linked to the Tablighi Jamaat congregation."According to the bulletin released by the Health Department of the Delhi government, on April 10, when the total number of COVID-19 cases were 903 in Delhi, 584 infections were linked to the Tablighi congregation.Since then the Delhi government dropped usage of the "markaz", the centre of the Tablighi Jamaat after the Delhi Minorities Commission raised an objection over it. New Delhi, Jun 6 () The COVID-19 test report of a Delhi Police constable who died here three days ago has come positive, official said on Saturday. Constable Rahul, 30, had underlying health conditions and he breathed his last on Wednesday at Safdarjung Hospital, the police said. He was on a medical leave since November 2019 and was undergoing treatment for lung infection. "Almost 85 per cent of his lungs were not functioning," Deputy Commissioner of Police (northeast) Ved Prakash Surya said. Earlier, three Delhi Police personnel died due to COVID-19. Rahul, a native of Aligarh in Uttar Pradesh, was posted in northeast district and resided with his family in Mandoli area here. A senior police officer said the constable was being treated at a health facility in south Delhi and was shifted to Safdarjung Hospital on Tuesday after his condition deteriorated. Around 500 personnel of the force have been infected with the dreaded virus and 200 of them recovered, according to Delhi Police. A 31-year-old constable, Amit Kumar, posted at the Bharat Nagar police station had died on May 6, while two assistant sub inspectors succumbed to the disease last week. Assistant sub inspectors Shesh Mani Pandey, 54, and Vikram, 52, died while undergoing treatment for the disease at the Army Base Hospital here in the last week of May. Vikram was posted at the Sultanpuri police station of outer Delhi and was on highway patrol duty in the area since May 1. Pandey was ex-Army personnel and worked with the Finger Print Bureau (FPB) of the Crime Branch in Central Delhi's Kamla Market area. NIT DPB

Deceased Delhi Police constable's report comes COVID-19 positive

New Delhi, Jun 9 () A 59-year-old sub-inspector of Delhi Police died on Tuesday due to coronavirus, officials said. Earlier, one constables and two assistant sub-inspectors of Delhi police had died due to COVID-19. Another constable, who had underlying health conditions and had been on leave since November last year, also died last week. Police said his test for COVID-19 also came positive. The sub-inspector who died on Tuesday has been identified as Karambeer. He was posted in northeast district, they said. He was admitted with symptoms of COVID-19 on June 2 at Army Base Hospital here, a senior police officer said. "Police received information from Army Base Hospital that Karambeer, who was on ventilator support for the last five days, died on Tuesday morning," said Anil Mittal, Additional PRO (Delhi Police). "A member of our family, SI Karambeer made the greatest sacrifice in the fight against COVID. We pay our homage to this great warrior," the Delhi Police tweeted. He was a resident of Brijpuri in Gokalpuri and is survived by his wife, a daughter and a son, who works with the Indian Railways posted in Mumbai, police said. Around 500 personnel of the force have been infected with the virus so far. A total of 200 of them have recovered, according to Delhi Police. Delhi Police SI dies due to COVID-19

(Eds: with more inputs) New Delhi, Apr 21 () The total number of coronavirus cases in the national capital rose to 2,156 on Tuesday, with 75 new cases being reported, according to the Delhi government authorities.It was the first time since April 8 that no fresh death due to the disease was reported in the city.Of the 47 fatalities reported till date, 25 were aged 60 years and above, making over 53 per cent of the total, they said.Twelve of them were in the age group of 50-59 and 10 were aged less than 50 years, officials said.By Monday night, the number of cases of the deadly virus in the city stood at 2,081.As many as 611 patients have recovered so far and the number of active cases is 1,498, according to the Delhi Health Department bulletin issued on Tuesday.The number of containment zones in the city has increased to 87, with three new ones being added, the authorities said. The West Delhi district has the highest number of such containment zones, they added.House-to-house surveillance and sanitisation of areas under containment is being done regularly in these zones.Approximately, a population of 3,23,000 people is covered under the various containment zones, the officials said.Sample collection and testing is also under process. A total of 5,560 samples had been collected from the different containment zones till Monday, the Health Department said earlier.Also, the department shared the age profile of 2,145 of the total cases reported in the city.Of these, 1,393 are aged less than 50 years, 344 are in the age group of 50-59 and the remaining 408 are aged 60 years and above.According to the department, at least 513 patients are admitted to various hospitals like LNJP Hospital, GTB Hospital, RML Hospital, Safdarjung Hospital, Rajiv Gandhi Super Speciality Hospital (RGSSH) and AIIMS Jhajjhar. It added that 27 patients are in the ICU and five on ventilator support.The total number of samples sent for testing till date stands at 26,627, the Health Department said in a statement.As many as 33,871 people, who came in contact with affected persons, are under home quarantine till date and 22,797 have completed their 14-day quarantine, it said. The statement said an order has been issued for deputing additional medical staff to COVID Care Centres at Sultanpuri, Narela and Mandoli.Also, the Delhi government has directed government and private COVID-testing labs and COVID hospitals to feed the requisite data of COVID-19 patients and suspected cases on the COVID App. KND IJT

By Manish Sarmah New Delhi, Jun 21 () Being trapped inside PPE suits for six hours is tough, battling the fear of contracting COVID-19 tougher and not meeting children, spouses or parents for weeks the toughest. But that is what they signed up for and that is what they do, say the doughty doctors and nurses at the AIIMS Trauma Centre. Their days revolve around their COVID-19 patients and their lives around their families and the twain can never meet. That is the maxim for the band of frontline warriors in the battle against the pandemic who go to extraordinary lengths to isolate themselves from their loved ones and ensure the two halves that make up their world stay completely separate. Like Vikas and Jyoti Yadav, both nursing officers, who live with their children, an 11-year-old daughter and a nine-year-old son, in suburban Gurgaon but haven't met them for days. The couple, both posted in the COVID-19 ward of the Trauma Centre, make it a point to return to their apartment complex about 40 km from their place of work. But make sure they isolate themselves from their children. They haven't been within touching distance of the their children since their COVID-19 duties began. "Isolating ourselves from the children is the most difficult part," Jyoti told . The children have their own room and have been very understanding. Since the lockdown began on March 25, Vikas and Jyoti spend most of their time at home in the garden close to the children's room, watch them go about their daily work and talk to them from there. It is tough but it is a commitment they made. "Vikas proposed to me inside the trauma centre in 2007 and since then we have been working and living together," Jyoti said. Kanishk Yadav, their colleague at the Trauma Centre, part of the premier All India Institute of Medical Sciences dedicated to COVID-19 treatment, echoes them. He stays in a separate room in his home in Sultanpuri and hasn't touched his four-year-old son for three months. His routine is down pat. It's 6 am and he has just reached home after his shift. He keeps his scrubs for washing, takes a shower and makes morning tea for himself. It's the end of just another day but he won't have it any other way. "When the coronavirus outbreak happened , I wrote a letter to the AIIMS administration requesting them to post me in COVID-19 duty," the nursing officer said. He added that COVID-19 duty was perceived as something fearful, and he wanted to motivate others. Yadav also spells out in detail what it is to wear a Personal Protective Equipment suit for six straight hours to ward off the dangers of being in an environment where the risk of infection is ever present. It is a daily hazard for the staff involved in COVID-19 duties. The routine of getting into a suit and getting out of one is a complicated, meticulous process and extreme care is needed to avoid any exposure. They have to consume their meals at least an hour before donning the suit and avoid even drinking water. Once the PPE is worn, it is six hours of no food, no going to the toilet, excessive perspiration, nausea and even blurred vision. Ashish Jhakal, also a nursing officer, said, "With the goggles and fogging, sometimes its even difficult to read the name of medicines. We have to double check with others." Jhakal has marks on his face due to wearing of the mask and goggles inside the PPE suit. With the surge in cases, health workers around the country walk the tightrope between work and home. On Sunday, the number of cases crossed the four lakh mark with the biggest single-day spike of 15,413 new infections. More than 195 healthcare workers have tested positive in AIIMS so far. But even in the face of such adversity, the workers are undeterred in their determination to do their best. "As doctors, this isn't something new for us. We are always at a risk of infection," said Irfan V, an AIIMS resident doctor. He and nursing officer Monika Sharma are among those who have been at the vanguard since the crisis began and remain steadfast in their commitment towards their work and its many challenges. Monika said the days are a test of her patience and will power. While Irfan misses watching Lionel Messi's forward play, Monika has not jammed with her AIIMS staff band since the outbreak of the disease. But their spirit of helping their patients keeps them motivated. Letting down their guard can expose their families to all kinds of risks. Minarey and Ranjuna Milind, another couple working at AIIMS realised they may have been careful. While Minarey works in the anaesthesia department, Ranjuna is in the gynaecology section. A few days ago, their 10 month-old baby and their parents, tested positive for the novel coronavirus. "When our baby tested positive, I felt like we made our baby suffer because of our profession," Minarey said. For patients undergoing COVID-19 treatment, the hospital stay can be lonely and traumatic. Over a period of time, they develop a bond. That is perhaps the dream that Pritam Yadav, another young AIIMS resident doctor saw when he opted for the medical profession. The 25-year-old said his father, a farmer by profession, wanted him to become a doctor. He did and in doing so became the first from his village in Kothputli in Rajasthan. "Clearing MBBS was one of his happiest moments," he said. Even now, he said, his father boosts his morale when he feels low. "I feel sad sometimes. There is an infant child in the ward, who along with his parents came out positive. Although his parents are safe and recovering, the baby is still under oxygen support." MANISH MIN MIN MIN
