<ul><li>On the heels of the <keyword id="57200" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="World-Mental-Health-Day">World Mental Health Day</keyword>, the World Health Organisation (WHO) is focussing on suicide prevention. </li><li>India recorded the highest suicide rate in the South-East region in 2016, shows a new study by World Health Organisation (WHO). </li><li>The <keyword id="4297928" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="suicide-rate-in-india">suicide rate in India</keyword> stood at 16.5% per 100,000 people — six percentage points higher than the global average of 10.5%. </li><li>However, the Indian government has not published any statistics over the last three years, so as to implement WHO guidelines and strategies for suicide prevention. </li><li>The female suicide rate was also the highest in India at 14.5%, as compared to other south-eastern countries.</li></ul>The suicide rate estimates in the report has ranked countries on a scale of five — and India was termed as “unusable or unavailable” and scored four out of five. Ahead of the World Mental Health Day on October 10, a World Health Organisation (WHO) study has shown that India recorded the <a href="https://apps.who.int/iris/bitstream/handle/10665/326948/WHO-MSD-MER-19.3-eng.pdf">highest suicide rate </a>in the South-East region in 2016. However, India no longer publishes any data statistics on suicide attempts at the national level. And so, it can’t implement the WHO guidelines and strategies for suicide prevention, Indiaspend <a href="https://www.indiaspend.com/india-has-the-highest-suicide-rate-in-south-east-asia-but-no-prevention-strategy/">noted</a>. Suicide is the second highest cause of unnatural dealths among youngsters and every 40 seconds, a person commits suicide. According to WHO, every person who dies by suicide leads to more than 20 people trying to attempt it. According to the study, the suicide rate in India stood at 16.5% per 100,000 people — six percentage points higher than the global average of 10.5%. In fact, the suicide rate among females was also the highest in India at 14.5%, as compared to other south-eastern countries. While it stands third among those countries that see the highest number of male suicides, after Sri Lanka and Thailand at 23.3% and 21.4% respectively. In 2014, the international agency proposed a suide-prevention model focussing on four areas — surveillance, identification of risks and protective factors, development &amp; evaluation of interventions and implementation. The decision was taken during the IIT council meeting where the ministry directed the IITs to establish wellness centres, looping in professional counsellors. “Yes, the matter was discussed at the IIT council meeting and all the IITs have been asked to make sure that they have wellness centres and professional counsellors,” ministry officials told ThePrint. This decision comes after a student at <a href="https://www.indiatoday.in/crime/story/iit-hyderabad-student-suicide-haunting-note-1560601-2019-07-02">IIT Hyderabad</a> committed suicide leaving behind a note saying ‘Sorry I turned out to be a waste.’ The student quoted academic pressure as the cause. Of the 23 IITs, Delhi, Mumbai and Madras campuses have wellness centres. The government now wants other institutions to have them as well. Suicide awareness: How to spot warning signs, experts explain

<ul><li>Every 4 in 10 people that commit suicide around the world are Indian, and every 7 in 10 are between the ages of 15-39.</li><li><keyword id="3658" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword>’s suicide death rates (SDRs) not only vary by gender, but also by state, where southern states exhibit a higher percentage of SDRs in comparison to northern states. </li><li>Learning from its Asian neighbors, like <keyword id="6355572" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="sri-lanka">Sri Lanka</keyword> and <keyword id="1334" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="China">China</keyword>, India needs to implement policies to curb the current trend on the rise. </li></ul>It’s normally diseases like cancer, tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS that considered to be the biggest threat to life. But, a new study by <keyword id="6361830" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="lancet">Lancet</keyword> Public Health shows that there may be a bigger health crisis looming at the horizon for India - suicide. Every 4 in 10 people who commit suicide around the world are from India. And, between the ages of 15-39, 7 out of 10 individuals are Indians. India may be a big country, but it only accounts for 17.8% of the global population so even in a relative sense, the suicide rates are high. Considering that suicide was a criminal offence up until 2017, it’s possible that these figures are on the low side due to the incidence of under-reporting. The study put forward by Lancet is a part of the India State-Level Disease Burden Initiative carried out in collaboration with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI) and the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) under the <keyword id="191419" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ministry-of-Health-and-Family-Welfare">Ministry of Health and Family Welfare</keyword>. Age differentials The overall suicide rate may be high, but it’s particularly worrying when looking at India’s younger generation between the ages of 15 years to 39 years. Not only is it at 71.2%, but it’s also the leading cause of death for that age group. Road accidents, heart disease and tuberculosis all fall short in comparison to the threat posed by suicides. Gender differentials The incidence of suicide is higher among women in India than it is between men. Where Indian women account for 36.6% of global suicides, Indian men account for 24.3%. According to the report, the majority of the suicides are committed by married women in comparison to the proportion of unmarried women. The report also explains that this may be because, in cases of arranged marriage or early marriage, the environment is less protective against suicide for women. Not to mention the pressure of young motherhood, low social status, domestic violence and economic dependence. Geographical distribution When looking at the state-wise distribution of suicides, the southern states have higher incidences of suicides than the northern states of India. The suicide death rate (SDR) per 100,000 in Karnataka is 30, in Tamil Nadu is 29.8 and in Andhra Pradesh, it’s 25. The states of Jammu and Kashmir, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Delhi, Punjab, Jharkhand and Bihar all recorded an SDR of less than 10 people per 100,000. The report wasn’t able to determine the exact causal relationship as to why the SDRs vary from state to state. One theory is that because some of the states with a lower rate of suicide also exhibit better socioeconomic indicators, the states with a higher rate of suicide have young people who face greater challenges when trying to achieve their life goals. Possible solution It wasn’t long ago that China and Sri Lanka were also staring at high suicide rates. Those countries faced <a href="http://www.wsws.org/en/articles/2012/09/sril-s28.html">similar challenges</a> like poverty, joblessness and high debt burdens creating rampant suicide. Targeting the means of suicides is an effective way to reduce the mortality rate. And, in lower/middle-income countries, a case can be made for the ease of access to highly toxic pesticides. In Sri Lanka, implementing pesticide bans drastically reduced the number of suicides in the country. In China, the age of urbanisation drastically reduced the SDR showing a 20% drop in 10 years. Different research attributes this to higher incomes, better education, less family pressure and, especially, reducing the ease of access to pesticides. Perhaps India needs to embark on similar policy measures in order to control its increasing SDR as well as focus on social measures that will improve the quality of life for the worst affected segments. For the younger generation, particularly, an increase in employment opportunities and better access to education would go a long way in helping them reach their aspirations and lead happier lives.

Every 40 seconds, a person commits suicide says WHO

And there are many such students at IITs. An exchange student from Japan committed suicide at IIT Guwahati on November 21. "He was supposed to return to his parent university on November 30 after completion of the exchange programme. They are probing the case of 19-year-old Humanities student — <keyword id="8339525" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Fathima-Lateef">Fathima Lateef</keyword>, who allegedly killed herself in her hostel room on November 9. As per the police, Lateef’s scores were low in her internal exams. However, her parents say that alleged religious discrimination and harassment by a university professor is the cause of her death. Around the same time, an 18-year-old IIT Delhi died after falling from the fifth floor of the hostel building — and police suspect a suicide. While a few such stories do come to light after they make headlines, several others are buried in the case files. In 2019 alone, about five students have committed suicide at IIT Madras. In the last ten years, as many as 14 such cases were registered at the institute. Last month, a third-year student at <a href="https://www.indiatoday.in/crime/story/iit-hyderabad-student-suicide-haunting-note-1560601-2019-07-02">IIT Hyderabad</a> committed suicide leaving behind a note saying, “Sorry I turned out to be a waste.” The student quoted academic pressure as the cause. And, this was the third suicide on campus in the last eight months. India has the highest student suicide rate with nearly 38,000 students committing suicide since 2015. The country witnesses nearly 28% of global suicides despite accounting for 18% of the population worldwide. Suicide is the second highest cause of unnatural dealths among youngsters. Every 40 seconds, a person commits suicide. According to WHO, every person who dies by suicide leads to more than 20 people trying to attempt it. Government push for wellness centres The Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) has laid out a counselling plan for country’s most prestigious institutes — Indian Institute of Technology (IITs) — and other higher educational institutions, The Print <a href="https://theprint.in/india/education/professional-counsellors-iit-student-suicide-hrd-ministry/299898/">reported</a>. Delhi, Mumbai and Madras campuses of IITs <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/policy/society/news/india-wants-more-iits-to-have-wellness-centers-to-curb-stress-and-depression/articleshow/71424045.cms">have wellness centres</a>. Roughly 10% of students seek counselling at IIT Madras, the Indian Express reported adding that a psychiatrist visits the campus everyday. The government now wants other institutions to have them as well. It is considering associating with more than 300 counsellors, including private partners via online mechanism. Student suicides spike significantly at IIT campuses

Suicide is a tragedy that occurs in all times and places. However, suicide rates vary around the world, so we made a map showing these differences.
For most of the countries shown in the map below, suicide rate data comes from the <a href="http://www.who.int/healthinfo/mortality_data/en/">World Health Organization</a>. The WHO's mortality database is based on reports from governmental agencies from different countries. Most of the WHO data thus comes from more developed countries.
For developing countries, numerous political, cultural, and religious hurdles make getting accurate information on suicide <a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1240102/">much more difficult</a>.
We were able to find estimates for suicide rates for China and India, not contained in the WHO data set. A widely referenced 2011 AFP article reported a <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suicide_in_China">rate for China of about 22.2 deaths per 100,000 people</a>, and a <a href="http://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(12)60606-0/abstract">survey published in the Lancet in 2012</a> estimated a rate of about 22.0 deaths per 100,000 people in India.
Suicides are most prominent in Asia and Eastern Europe. Lithuania has the highest suicide rate among the countries for which we have data, with 28.6 suicide deaths per 100,000 people, followed closely by South Korea with 26.3 deaths per 100,000 people.

Here Are The Countries With The Worst Suicide Rates

It has been a while since India has had this dubious credential. The nation is home to second largest human resources with majority of its population being the youth, but unfortunately it also has a high rate of suicides among young people. 
 In fact, a <keyword id="6356311" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="World-Health-Organisation">World Health Organisation</keyword>’s report on <keyword id="2781797" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="worldwide-suicide-figures">worldwide suicide figures</keyword> put India on the top most position. So, the steady increase of India’s march towards being tech-savvy nation has also been its highest casualty. The <keyword id="6366244" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="WHO">WHO</keyword> report clearly indicates some worrisome trends that can put the nation’s future in serious jeopardy. Women and youth are among the highest victims of suicidal tendencies, and majority of them succeed in ending their own lives before or just at reaching the prime of their lives. 
 This alarming trend has been on a progressive mode in India since the last few years. Economic crisis, immigration fuelled by globalization, isolation from communities, mental problems that don’t get identified or addressed – all these and much more contribute to the increasing number of <keyword id="528508" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Suicides-in-India">suicides in India</keyword>. This drastic act of ending one’s life is mostly total. Because the ones who survive such attempts will be treated as criminals since according to Indian law, suicide is a crime. There was this brief period when it was freed from the clutches of making it a criminal act, but very soon, it was back to being a crime. 
 
While the youth in the age group of 25- 30 commit suicides the highest, there are others who end their lives too. Women across age groups and farmers who are at the mercy of government’s policies often give up hopes owing to aspects that are beyond their control. 
 
In 2012, about 258,075 lives were lost to the disturbing trend of suicide. This number is more than the lives lost in either cross border terrorism or road accidents. Every 40th second, India loses a precious life that could have helped the country’s progress inch further. And over 75% of these suicides occur in low and middle class income households. 
 
Apart from suicide of farmers who are forced to rely on old policies and meager income to support their families, techies seem to be biting this trend faster than ever. While women form a strong number in the suicide statistics, men still hold the majority. 
 
Though inhuman, if one wants to consider the number of farmers who are forced to end their lives the reasons are aplenty and sometimes go beyond comprehensible aspects that affect the farmers and their lives. 
 
But, when young techies consider suicide despite being able to afford a handsome living, job security and ample opportunities in their chosen area of expertise, things begin to look hazy after a while. 
 
It was just a few months ago that a young techie well within his 30s committed suicide jumping off fourth floor of an under-construction building in Bangalore. He was employed in a prestigious company, took home a good pay packet and was living in a city that holds more job opportunities apart from Mumbai in the current times. His future, obviously, held more promises than his past. 
 
His end came in a bizarre manner. He posted a video of himself, walking on the ledge of the building from where he planned his end, held the fire brigade and allied forces for over two hours and then ran to the other end of the building and jumped from a place where no one was prepared to catch him crash landing. He immediately died of the impact. 
 
This is not an isolated case. Internet is filled with information and news relating to dead techies who ended their lives at various parts of the world. What does them in, despite the decent life they would be leading? In more ways than one, having a decent life is no guarantee towards mental imbalance creeping in. In fact, such socially safe circumstances can act as covers for any mental issue that one could be facing. Lessened social interaction and increased online presence claims its casualties in the form of people who yearn for socially stimulating situations that could have helped their problems. 
 
Offices today are more like rule books that increase stress than address it. Professional atmosphere has no space for personal issues, and when the vents begin to close one by one, an individual gets desperate and finds the only way out – end the life. 
 
But, that’s not the answer. India needs to face this question and find ways of addressing this problem before an entire generation is lost to isolation.

Rising Suicides of Techies: Young India on the Edge and Lost in Isolation

<ul><li>The <keyword id="59844" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="European-Space-Agency">European Space Agency</keyword> plans to use a four-armed robot to drag <keyword id="943402" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Space-Debris">space debris</keyword> back to Earth. </li><li>The robot will launch into space, wrap itself around the target, and fall back to Earth in a controlled descent. </li><li>The robot called Chaser has been developed by a Swiss start-up called <keyword id="8428979" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="clearspace">ClearSpace</keyword>. </li></ul>The European Space Agency (ESA) has a plan to clean up Earth's orbit — one satellite at a time. A four-armed robot — the Chaser — will launch into space and drag space debris back to Earth in a blaze of glory. The robot, developed by a Swiss startup called <a href="https://clearspace.today/">ClearSpace</a>, will first be tested in Earth's lower 500-kilometre orbit and by 2025, ESA plans to start delegating official targets — the first of which will be Vespa, the secondary payload adapter of ESA's Vega launch in 2013. It's not an actually a satellite but it's around the same size and shape — ideal for ESA's ClearSpace Mission-1. "NASA and ESA studies show that the only way to stabilise the orbital environment is to actively remove large debris items… This new mission, implemented by an ESA project team, will allow us to demonstrate these technologies, achieving a world first in the process," said <a href="https://www.esa.int/Newsroom/Press_Releases/ESA_commissions_world_s_first_space_debris_removal">Luisa Innocenti</a>, head of ESA's Clean Space initiative. The growing threat of space debris Earth's immediate orbit is already home to around 20,000 objects — and it's only going to get <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/the-trash-in-outer-space-makes-way-for-a-new-kind-of-map/articleshow/69751105.cms">more crowded</a>.  The market for satellite space launches is set to hit $30 billion by 2026, according to <a href="https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/space-launch-services-market-to-reach-30-01-bn-globally-by-2026-at-17-2-cagr-allied-market-research-300934694.html">Allied Market Research</a>. It's growing at an average annual rate of 17.2%. More countries are coming into the space exploration fold and companies are looking to be self-dependent while expanding the range of services that they can provide. "Even if all space launches were halted tomorrow, projections show that the overall orbital debris population will continue to grow, as collisions between items generate fresh debris in a cascade effect," said Innocenti. The threat that already exists Nevermind the risk of these objects accidentally colliding with each other, there's already a ton of junk <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/new-grading-system-for-satellite-launches/articleshow/69230966.cms">lying in wait</a>. Earth's Lower Earth Orbit (LEO) is home to more than 3,000 defunct satellites and millions of smaller pieces of debris. Europe wants to use a suicidal robot to clean up space — one satellite at a time

<ul class="summary-list"><li>In 2006, Prince Manvendra Singh Gohil came out to a local newspaper, becoming <keyword id="11892747" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword>'s first openly gay prince.</li><li>He endured years of conversion therapy — including electroshock treatments — and was publicly disowned by his family.</li></ul>Prince Manvendra Singh Gohil, the 39th direct descendant of India's Gohil Rajput dynasty, knew he was gay at age 12. But he could only live his truth three decades later.Gohil publicly came out in an interview to a local newspaper in 2006, becoming the first openly gay royal in the country. He was 41 at the time.Until 2018, homosexuality was illegal in India, punishable under Section 377, a colonial-era draconian law that demanded up to life imprisonment for anyone committing sexual acts "against the order of nature." Naturally, Gohil's public unmasking triggered a nation-wide scandal. The entire town of Rajpipla — a formerly princely state located in the western state of Gujarat where his ancestors were kings — turned on him. "The day I came out, my effigies were burnt. There were a lot of protests, people took to the streets and shouted slogans saying that I brought shame and humiliation to the royal family and to the culture of India. There were death-threats and demands that I be stripped off of my title," Gohil told Insider over a phone call from the coastal state of Kerala.His parents, the Maharaja and Maharani of Rajpipla, responded with similar rage. They publicly disowned him as their son and took out advertisements in newspapers announcing that he was cut off as heir due to his involvement in activities "unsuitable to society". <h2>He turned the palace grounds he was once thrown out of into a shelter for the LGBTQ+ community.</h2>Gohil had expected the homophobic uproar. The society he grew up around was strongly conserative, and the country he grew up in didn't legally recognize gay rights. Many around him believed that homosexuality was a mental disorder. At the time, Gohil remembers reporters clamoring to him for a comment on the public rejection. He calmly recounted the answer he gave them, saying, "I don't blame the people who are against me. I blame their ignorance on the subject." Today, at 55, Gohil's stance remains the same. Much of his advocacy for LGBTQ+ rights continues to primarily revolve around decimating the stigma around homosexuality. It's with that approach that he founded Lakshya Trust, a charitable organization with the aim to improve the rights of the LGBTQ+ community in Gujarat two decades ago. In 2018, the year that the Supreme Court decriminalized homosexuality in a landmark ruling, Gohil opened up a 15-acre palace grounds to build a shelter for vulnerable members of the community. Ironically, it was the same palace he was thrown out of when he publicly came out years ago. In that sense, a large part of Gohil's crusade for equal rights and dignity of life for the LGBTQ+ community is rooted in his own painful past, which included being forced into a short-lived arranged marriage with a woman (Gohil eventually married his husband in 2013), enduring years of torturous conversion therapy, and suffering in silence.<div type="image" title="Prince Manvendra Singh Gohil" height="1928" width="2571" msid="90942851" hostid="261"></div><h2>After coming out to his family, Gohil was subjected to years of conversion therapy.</h2>Back in 2002, four years before he came out to the world, Gohil came out to his parents, having been attracted to men for years. "They thought it was impossible that I could be gay because my cultural upbringing had been so rich. They had no idea that there's no connection between someone's sexuality and their upbringing," Gohil recounted. The state of denial was followed by his parents insisting on finding a "cure" for his sexuality. In the next four years, Gohil claims that his parents took him to a host of medical practitioners and spiritual guides, "They approached doctors to operate on my brain to make me straight and subjected me to electroshock treatments." When it didn't work out the way they imagined, Gohil was shipped to religious leaders who were ordered to make him "behave normally." None of it worked. But by the time his parents stopped their efforts, Gohil was left traumatized and depressed, often contemplating suicide. In many ways, he says the newspaper interview unshackled him. <h2>Conversion therapy is still not illegal in India. "I have to keep fighting."</h2>Two decades since, conversion therapy is still not outlawed in India (Tamil Nadu is the only state to legally ban the practice last year). Even though there is no proven success rate, it continues to be widely employed to physically and mentally assault the country's queer population, leading to increased depression and death by suicide among LGBTQ+ youth in India. In 2020, a 21-year-old bisexual woman <a href="https://lifestyle.livemint.com/health/wellness/the-pain-and-cruelty-of-conversion-therapy-111634459309525.html">committed</a> suicide after her family subjected her to a harrowing two-month ordeal at de-addiction centers in Kerala in a bid to "cure" her bisexuality. Today, Gohil is at the forefront of the demand for a ban on the unethical practice. In that, he is not just fighting for a ban but is also battling decades of regressive mentality, ignorance, and judgment. "It's important for people like me who have a certain reputation in society to continue the advocacy. We can't just stop because the country repealed Section 377," he said, explaining that a law being passed in India doesn't always mean that people will immediately start accepting or following it."Now we have to fight for issues like same-sex marriage, right to inheritance, right to adoption. It's a never-ending cycle. I have to keep fighting."

This is more pronounced in children and adolescents as diversity among them is not commonly understood and society puts massive pressure on them to conform to assigned gender norms at birth. Statistics show that trans teens are much more likely to attempt suicide than teens whose identities match what is written on their birth certificates. In addition, transgender people face huge discrimination and in certain countries can be arrested. And <keyword id="1005856" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="transgender-women">transgender women</keyword> have some of the highest rates of HIV - up to 40% in some cases- compared to the rest of the population. Tea Uglow, a transgender woman who identifies as queer and has been working for the cause of transgender visibility, on seeing ‘The Mirror’, said, “Swati's film blew me away - it is really brazen. It walks straight up to a really interesting line and just does exactly what it shouldn't do. It's very hard to describe - but there is no product, yet it is clearly selling an idea. There is no transgression, but clearly it is showing transgression. There is no outrage, yet clearly, we expect outrage. It is like it is painting a picture that is so normal that it may as well be a Tide advert. (a reference for Superbowl fans). Ultimately it is a fairy tale, and we know it is a fairy tale and yet you wonder, what is really stopping this from being perfectly fine? It is just how I would want my family to react were one of my children or my families’ children to embrace gender-questioning behaviour.” For Jas Pham, a transgender woman living in Bangkok, Thailand, the video struck a chord. “Basically, I teared up watching the video. It reminded me of my childhood,” she said. Cole Young, a transgender American man, knows that parents do not always embrace their children in this open, accepting way, but he likes the positive, happy feel of the movie. “We know the bad reactions, we’ve experienced them, so we don’t need to re-traumatize trans people.” Keem Love Black, a Ugandan transgender woman, said the film resonated with her because at the same age she lived similar moments, and still does to this day. “I have mirror moments all the time, especially when I am going out,” she said. Kanykei is one of the few transgender people who lives openly in Kyrgyzstan’s capital of Bishkek. She recalls putting on scarves when little, a bit like the boy in the film. However, her family did not take it seriously. Ever since she can remember, before she realized the difference between boys and girls, she felt like a girl. “They would laugh as in a small child is playing, but, over time, it was perceived differently, both in the family and in society,” she said. Ariadne Ribeiro, a Brazilian transgender woman, likens her own mirror moment as trying to search for herself within.
