<ul><li>The movie’s characters are nothing like they are in comic books.</li><li><keyword id="1438654" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="agastya-nanda" source="Orion">Agastya Nanda</keyword> is a serious college-plan maker, Reggie a crusader.</li><li><keyword id="543349" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="suhana-khan" source="Orion">Suhana Khan</keyword> and Khushi Kapoor should have exchanged places as Betty and Veronica. </li></ul>You can’t live your life for kicks, everything is politics. If not anything, Zoya Akthar’s musical <keyword id="12509997" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="the-archies" source="Orion">The Archies</keyword> has given a slogan for young people to come and vote in the upcoming general elections. Beyond that, there is little else in the movie that promises a lot with an unusual setting. The trailer had enthused Archie comic-loving GenX and older millennials. It also enthused GenZs with debuts of starkids like Suhana Khan, Agastya Nanda and Khushi Kapoor. While people were promised a breezy watch which goes with the Christmas mood, it’s actually bland. An already predictable story-line is extended and made slower by the many songs. Songs are way too brooding and don’t have the 60s twist dance format. The movie misses the delicious vintage moments of the time and the sequence is closer to High School Musical choreography. Neither is the story heartwarming nor are the characters anything like their comic-book characters, without their typical goofiness. Not the real Archies A serious young man planning for college is not the Archie we know who is an awkward, always-broke young man who jalopy constantly breaks down. Reggie in the movie looks uncannily like Ranveer Singh and acts like him too. He is not chasing Midge and Ronnie and getting into trouble with Moose. In fact, he writes socially relevant articles, comforts Dilton who ‘is in love’ with him and more. Where is the mirror-gazing vanity? Jughead is way too insightful about the workings of girls, and Hotdog is too small. Also, why make Mr Lodge a villain? He is the smart businessman – the kind who plans to invest in spectacle-making businesses after he sees people always looking into their phones. Here, he is a man who paves a paradise-like park to put up a parking lot, ahem… hotel. <div type="image" title="archies" msid="105831558" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Source: IANS&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> Missing the fashion-point The girls — Betty and Ronnie – are also far from their true nature. For one, the leggy Kapoor should have been Veronica and Khan should have been Betty. The comics brought in the ‘great girl divide’ — girl next-door versus the unattainable hot girl. The frenemy love triangle is also brushed away. It’s time to point out that Karan Johar has gotten this better in his movie Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. The movie stars Khan’s father Shah Rukh Khan as the girl-chasing boy who falls for the hot, new girl Rani Mukherjee —ignoring his plain best-friend Kajol. The fashion game of Archies was also better captured by older film-makers when Archies was in vogue. It’s been said that Raj Kapoor had used Archie books to design Dimple Kapadia’s outfits in 70s classic, Bobby. He had gotten it better than Akhtar as neither Ronnie nor Betty wore anything that made them stand-out. The Anglo-Indian town The only thing palatable is the way the movie explains why an Indian town is named ‘Riverdale’ – and why everyone has Anglicized names. A Britisher fell in love with an Indian woman and married her and wanted a town for his people, the Anglo-Indians. The town was ‘bought’ by him from a prince, his friend. None of the younger generation look and feel like Anglo-Indians. They speak a lot more English making one wonder if it’s an English or a Hindi movie. It also artificially makes Fred Andrews use ‘hoyenga’ instead of ‘hoga’. All the youngsters speak Hindi with an accent, and sound like those who watched too much MTV and Channel V, which weren’t there in 1964 (that’s when radio ruled). Akktar had better precedents like the classic ‘Baton Baton Mein’ made by Basu Chatterjee. The Amol Palekar movie is a love story and introduces the concept of dating in the 70s which was a common practice in the Anglo-Indian community. The Archies has none of the charm of the many movies that have been stitched around the Archies and the Anglo-Indian theme. The movie could have been a good opportunity to introduce Archie comics back to GenZs who seem to love graphic novels. This movie will do nothing to take Archie and Jughead double digests off their half-off bins. She looked breathtaking in a blood red body con shimmer dress. With her hair open, red lips, and golden high heels, Suhana won the hearts with her glamorous look. She was accompanied by her father and superstar SRK, who was seen in an all black outfit. The 'Pathaan' actor wore a black coat, matching trousers, and a tee shirt with Archies imprinted on it. Suhana's mother Gauri looked beautiful in a black cut out dress. While her brother-Aryan and AbrRam were also present at the venue. <keyword id="162240" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="chandigarh-university" source="Orion">Chandigarh University</keyword> (CU) chancellor, Satnam Singh Sandhu announced that the <keyword id="6360078" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="chandigarh" source="Orion">Chandigarh</keyword> University will offer every kind of help to the 700 Indian <keyword id="3216" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="students" source="Orion">students</keyword> - who have fallen prey to fake college admission offer letters by the fraudulent consultants - if they are deported from <keyword id="6356687" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="canada" source="Orion">Canada</keyword>. Sandhu said this during the varsity's annual convocation that was held on Friday at the campus premises. "Our government is working closely with their counterparts in Canada to resolve the issue which we are hopeful will happen soon," he said while talking to the media. Left in the lurch, 700-odd Indian students, mostly from Punjab, are facing <keyword id="106041" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="deportation" source="Orion">deportation</keyword> from Canada after the authorities in the country found their admission offer letters to be fake. Satnam Singh Sandhu said, "The university will provide every possible help to these students if they are deported. We will give them admission and enroll them in the same batches. Their credit score mapping will be carried out properly so that the credits earned by them in their previous institutions are not wasted. Bridge courses will also be offered to them if any gap is found during the credit score mapping. The university will make sure that they do not face any loss." Sandhu also said that if these students are deported, later the university will also assist them in pursuing their study abroad dreams in legitimate ways. "We understand the situation they are facing right now in the foreign country. We can feel their pain and stand with their families back in India," said Satnam Singh Sandhu, adding that the university is also exploring starting a helpline number for the affected students and their families. Meanwhile, more than 1400 students were awarded undergraduate and postgraduate, and Ph.D. degrees during the annual convocation held at CU on Friday. The convocation ceremony was attended by former president of India Ram Nath Kovind as chief guest. Chandigarh University is a NAAC A+ Grade University and an autonomous educational institution approved by UGC and is located near Chandigarh in the state of Punjab. It is the youngest university in India and the only private university in Punjab to be honoured with A+ Grade by NAAC (National Assessment and Accreditation Council). CU offers more than 109 UG and PG programs in the field of engineering, management, pharmacy, law, architecture, journalism, animation, hotel management, commerce, and others. It has been awarded as The University with Best Placements by WCRC. Not even in the hay days, when movies were a key source of entertainment. Now, at a time when theaters are struggling with occupancies and footfalls, India’s largest multiplex chain has brought out its PVR INOX Passport. For ₹699, consumers can watch 10 movies in a month on weekdays but without access to its IMAX, Gold, LUXE and Director's Cut services. Even as the movie industry saw post-pandemic successes with RRR, Pathan, <keyword id="6498265" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="pushpa" source="Orion">Pushpa</keyword> and Rocky and Rani Ki Prem Kahani, occupancies haven’t yet hit pre-Covid levels. Now, PVR is hopeful that with this limited period offer, they can bring back some of those who have lost the habit of watching movies on the screen. “The three significant target groups we are focusing on are students, housewives, and senior citizens, where we believe lies a great opportunity. We expect this innovative offering will not only revitalize weekday cinema attendance but also introduce a new dimension to how our patrons interact with and enjoy the world of cinema,” said Gautam Dutta, co-CEO of PVR INOX. The big screens are being hurt by OTT’s weekly and monthly launches of shows and direct-to-OTT movies. Moreover, GenZs with mobiles and easy data access, find little allure of watching movies in a size larger than life. Unlimited OTTs plus limited theatrical releases PVR is trying to build a habit of making movie watching a social outing that it has been for generations before. OTTs have also upped their ante during the pandemic and has brought back movie loving public into its fold. The time lag between a theatrical release and their satellite/OTT debuts have come down drastically. In some cases, it’s a matter of a few weeks. Added to that, a few superstar-starring, much awaited movies are going directly to OTTs. Case in point – Knives Out ‘Glass Onion’ starring Daniel Craig had a ‘limited’ release before it hit Netflix. Even Martin Scorsese planned the same for his ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ but canceled it. There are more examples closer home too. One of Bollywood’s most-awaited debuts with three star kids directed by Zoya Akhtar is The Archies. The off-beat movie starring Shah Rukh Khan’s daughter Suhana Khan, Amitabh Bachchan’s grandson Agastya Nanda, and late actress Sridevi’s daughter Khushi Kapoor, is coming to Netflix. More reason for the young to subscribe to Netflix and chill, instead of making a movie date. “This move may eventually bring the youth back to the cinemas, which will be a big positive structural trigger. The only ponderable is if lower pricing or good content would be the decider to usher in this change,” says Karan Taurani, research analyst at Elara Capital in a note on the offer. Without the price-barrier If there ever was a good way to bring back young people to try something, price reduction is the way to go. Many apps and new-age businesses are built on this theory. PVR’s Passport plan however does zero or no damage to their economics. As per Elara’s calculations, pan-India, annual average occupancy for exhibitors for weekdays (Monday-Thursday) is around 17%. Discounted ticket prices may prop occupancy towards 20-25% it believes. “Increased occupancy may not come at any incremental costs and may drive better F&amp;B and ad revenue which is high-margin in nature,” Taurani adds. The Passport offer which is not available in the South of India, is also limited in nature. Only 20,000 of these passes are available. The idea behind it is not merely to boost weekday occupancy, claims PVR. “With the Passport, we have sought to break the barriers of cost and allow our newer audiences to immerse themselves in a wide array of movies across diverse genres. We expect this innovative offering will not only revitalize weekday cinema attendance but also introduce a new dimension to how our patrons interact with and enjoy the world of cinema,” said Dutta. Small vs Big Apart from limited releases, a lot of quaint small movies, whose surprise performance vitalized box offices are also missing. These are the movies that are being swept off by OTTs and as per media reports, producers and distributors are also getting <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/media/entertainment/studios-fail-to-talk-up-movies-theatres-pay-the-price/articleshow/104897753.cms">tight-fisted with marketing spends</a>. Taurani says that theaters’ dependence on large-budget films increased to around 85% in Hindi <keyword id="25892" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="box-office" source="Orion">Box Office</keyword> (BO) which is a structural risk. If there is an option to watch ‘many movies’ with a prepaid option, the small movies which are hitherto undiscovered can get a boost. “It's about making every visit to the cinema an opportunity to discover something new, to be entertained, and to be captivated by the magic of storytelling on the big screen, even with the smaller films,” said Dutta. Be it big or small, a movie on a big screen is always an experience. Whether the younger generation who is reportedly more keen on experiences than anything will subscribe to it, is yet to be seen.
