Reliance Jio lost around 10.9 million subscribers in the quarter to reach 479 million subscribers whereas Vi lost 5.1 million subscribers in this quarter mainly in the 2G segment to reach 205 million subscribers. This quarter also saw increased porting to the government-owned telecom operator Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), from private operators as tariffs were not raised by the telco. The report says SIM consolidation is expected to be largely over by the end of the third quarter of the current fiscal. It adds that besides tariff hikes, ARPU for the sector will continue to grow also led by subscribers moving from 2G to 4G and growth in post-paid subscribers. About the revival of Vi, the report says the government now has a 24% equity stake in the telco. The company is in discussion with banks to raise debt capital of ₹250 billion for its capex plans of ₹500-550 billion over the next 3 years to improve its network capacity. Telcos report a rise in ARPU after tariff hike, lose subscribers

Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Jio had announced a tariff hike, which was followed by Airtel and Vi. The telcos had announced a tariff hike of up to 25%, which came into effect from July. The three telcos have lost significant subscribers during the July-September quarter. In September 2024, there was a net decline of 5.02 million users in the total subscriber base, taking the total subscribers to 1.153 billion at the end of the month. <h2>Reliance Jio records a huge decline in subscribers</h2>Reliance Jio recorded a decrease of 7.97 million subscribers in September 2024. With this, the telco’s subscriber base has declined from 471.75 million in August to 463.78 million in September 2024. Out of the 463.78 million subscribers, the company’s active subscriber base stood at 444.49 million, which is 95.84%, marking a steady increase in its active subscriber base. Sunil Mittal-led Bharti Airtel has also recorded a significant decline in its subscriber base in September at 1.43 million users. The telco’s subscriber base declined from 384.91 million in August 2024 to 383.48 million in September 2024. The telco continues to enjoy a high active subscriber base. The company's active subscribers stand at 380.68 million users out of its 383.48 million users, which is 99.27% of its total user base, the highest among all the telcos. <h2>Vi continues to bleed subscribers</h2>Vi, which is yet to launch 5G services in the country has once again reported a huge decline in subscribers. The company lost 1.55 million users in September 2024. The company’s subscriber base decreased from 214 million in August 2024 to 212.45 million users in September 2024. Out of the 212.45 million users, the company’s active user base stands at 179.52 million users, which is 84.50%. <h2>BSNL gains subscribers</h2>BSNL, the only telco that did not raise its tariff continues to gain subscribers. Jio, Airtel and Vi lost nearly 11 million subscribers in September 2024

Market watchdog SEBI has come out with a consultation paper in a bid to ease the functioning of <keyword id="22476006" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="ESG-Rating-Providers" source="keywords">ESG Rating Providers</keyword> (ERPs), pushing for the development of a <keyword id="23760035" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="subscriber-pays-model" source="keywords">subscriber-pays model</keyword>. As of July 2024, nine ERPs are registered with SEBI to operate in the country. These include <keyword id="23760037" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="CRISIL-ESG-Ratings" source="keywords">CRISIL ESG Ratings</keyword> &amp; Analytics, ESG Risk Assessments and Ratings, GlobeTrend Climate Impact Institutional Investor Advisory Services, <keyword id="23760038" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="NSE-Sustainability-Ratings" source="keywords">NSE Sustainability Ratings</keyword> and Analytics, PGS Impact, Pragati Development Consulting, CARE ESG Ratings, and SES ESG Research. Per the paper's proposal, ERPs won't be required to disclose ESG (environmental, social, and governance) ratings to the bourses, provided they confirm that there is no non-public information that could potentially affect the rating. Another proposal was the simultaneous sharing of the ESG rating reports both to the rated companies and to the subscribers who pay to access these reports. ERPs should ensure that rated entities, their group companies, or associates cannot subscribe to their own ESG ratings, SEBI said in its consultation paper. Some of the other suggestions put forth by SEBI include: 1. Companies will have a specific timeframe to respond to the ESG report, and any such comments should be included in the report as an addendum. 2. In case the ERP does not agree with the remarks issued by the rated company, they can add their comments to the report as well. 3. ERPs can rate unlisted issuers or other products, provided they meet specific guidelines from relevant regulators. SEBI is receiving public comment on these proposals until November 15, 2024. <h2>Steady returns </h2>Of the 11 ESG mutual fund schemes available to Indian mutual fund investors, the Quant ESG Equity fund has generated the highest returns of about 45.44% over one year, data from ValueResearch showed. Simply put, had you invested Rs 10,000 every month in this fund for three years, you would have accumulated a corpus of Rs 5,47,525. Over three years, the returns on this fund come to around 26%. This was followed by the ICICI Pru ESG Exclusionary Strategy fund, which yielded 44.73% returns over the same period. However, over ultra-short terms, i.e., 1-3 months, ESG funds have largely delivered negative returns, underscoring their suitability only as a long-term investment avenue. Only the SBI ESG Exclusionary Strategy Direct Fund and Quantum ESG Best In Class Strategy Direct Fund have been around for 5 years, during which they have generated returns of about 16.67% and 18.7%, respectively. <keyword id="23760036" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ESG-mutual-funds" source="keywords">ESG mutual funds</keyword> typically select and invest in companies that are ESG-compliant, i.e., who weave in environmental conversation, social welfare, and robust <keyword id="20392393" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="corporate-governance" source="keywords">corporate governance</keyword> practices into their working philosophy and work ethos, while simultaneously generating decent financial returns for stakeholders as well.

Out of the 476.53 million subscribers, the company’s <keyword id="22859675" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="active-subscriber-base" source="keywords">active subscriber base</keyword> stood at 440.94 million, which is 92.53%. <h2>Airtel adds 1.25 million subscribers</h2>Sunil Mittal-led Bharti Airtel has once again added 1.25 million subscribers, just like May 2024. With this, the company's subscriber base has increased from 387.77 million in May 2024 to 389.02 million in June 2024. Airtel continues to enjoy a high active subscriber base. The company's active subscribers stand at 384.83 million users out of its 389.02 million users, which is 98.92% of its total user base. <h2>Vi continues to bleed subscribers</h2>Vi, which is yet to launch 5G services in the country has once again reported a decline in subscribers. The company lost nearly a million users in June 2024 with a decline of 860,889 users. The company’s subscriber base decreased from 218.16 million in May 2024 to 217.30 million users in June 2024. Out of the 217.30 million users, the company’s active user base stands at 188.26 million users, which is 86.64%. <h2>State-run BSNL loses subscribers</h2>State-run telco Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) reported a loss of 0.75 million subscribers in June 2024. According to the report, BSNL added over 2.94 million mobile subscribers in July. Bharti Airtel lost 1.69 million mobile subscribers which was highest among its peers. Vodafone Idea and Reliance Jio lost 1.41 million and 758,000 mobile subscribers, respectively. Overall, the telecom subscriber base in the country declined marginally to 1,205.17 million in July from 1,205.64 million in June. North East, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Mumbai, Kolkata, Tamil Nadu, Punjab, Bihar, West Bengal, UP East, Haryana, Andhra Pradesh telecom circles recorded decline in mobile customer base post the hike in mobile services rates. The wireline or the fixed line connections segment increased by about 1% to 35.56 million in July from 35.11 million in June. Reliance Jio led the fixed-line segment with addition of over 480,000 new subscribers. It was followed by Bharti Airtel which added over 136,000 new subscribers, VMIPL 12,413, Vi 11,375, Tata Teleservices 3,971 and Quadrant added 12 new fixed line customers. BSNL was the biggest loser in the segment. The state-run firm lost 134,000 fixed line customers and its sister concern lost 56,454 customers. The broadband customer base in the country increased to 946.19 million at the end of July from 940.75 million in June. Top five players accounted for 98.42% of total broadband connection in the country. Reliance Jio led the chart with 488.63 million <keyword id="23252277" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="broadband-customers" source="keywords">broadband customers</keyword>, Airtel with 284.03 million, Vodafone Idea with 126.72 million, BSNL with 29.61 million and Atria Convergence with 2.26 million. Subscribers more than doubled year over year and contributed to around $123 million of quarterly revenue.The social media platform has also overhauled its advertising business in recent years. It shifted from brand awareness ads to more expensive direct response ads that have a call to action, encouraging users to buy a product or visit a website.Despite factors that have been positively impacting Snap, the company has consistently been reporting losses, including a $153 million loss in quarter three. It reported a $368 million loss in the third quarter of 2023.Snap's 443 million user base is small compared to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/reddit-user-growth-usa-q2-earnings-results-social-media-2024-8">Meta's 3.3 billion users</a>, and TikTok's more than <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://newsroom.tiktok.com/en-us/1-billion-people-on-tiktok">1 billion</a> users, both of which it directly competes with for ad revenue.The performance gap between Snap and Meta and Google continues to widen, further accelerating Snap's market share losses and revenue growth underperformance, Jefferies analysts led by James Heaney wrote in an earnings preview note last week.The company has missed analyst expectations twice in the last four quarters. Snap surges 10% as it gets a major boost from AI and paid subscribers

<ul class="summary-list"><li>The <keyword id="23150499" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="pay-TV-industry" source="keywords">pay-TV industry</keyword> lost 1.6 million subscribers in Q2 2024.</li><li>While that's very bad, it's not a record.</li></ul>Good news for the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tv-youtube-decline-worst-quarter-ever-subscribers-2024-6">pay-TV industry</a>, which suffered its worst quarter ever at the beginning of the year: The next three months were not quite as bad. Pay-TV distributors — that's conventional cable guys like <keyword id="20339746" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Comcast" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Comcast" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Comcast">Comcast</keyword>, satellite TV outfits like <keyword id="23018716" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="DirecTV" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="DirecTV" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="DirecTV">DirecTV</keyword>, and digital alternatives like <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/streaming/youtube-tv">YouTube TV</a> — lost 1.6 million subscribers in the second quarter of 2024, according to analysts at MoffettNathanson. That's very bad! But not as bad as other Q2s, like in 2023, when the industry lost 1.7 million subscribers, or in 2022, when it lost 1.8 million subs. And in other good news for the TV industry… well, that's about it. Those 1.6 million <keyword id="23150500" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="subscribers-lost" source="keywords">subscribers lost</keyword> in the second quarter account for 6.9% of the industry's base, and there's no reason to think the slide is going to slow down at all, analysts Craig Moffett and Michael Nathanson write: "It is becoming increasingly clear that there is no longer any floor." As we've discussed here before, a few years ago there was a thought that digital pay-TV distributors like <keyword id="20238936" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="YouTube-TV" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="YouTube TV" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="YouTube TV">YouTube TV</keyword> and Hulu Live would replace losses at conventional distributors, but that's no longer true. And those digital distributors are increasingly seeing "seasonality" in their business — consumers sign up for them in the fall to watch the NFL, and churn them out at the beginning of the year. That's why <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tv-youtube-decline-worst-quarter-ever-subscribers-2024-6">YouTube TV lost subscribers for the first time in Q1</a>, and only added 50,000 subscribers in Q2. The service added 300,000 subscribers in the same quarter last year. And speaking of sports, Moffett and Nathanson spend a lot of time talking about <keyword id="23150501" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Venu" source="keywords">Venu</keyword>, the sports streamer that was supposed to have launched last month but has been held up indefinitely by a federal judge. The companies behind <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/venu-fubo-tv-cable-bundle-cord-cutting-disney-fox-wbd-2024-8" target="_blank">Venu</a> — Warner Bros. Discovery, <keyword id="19899232" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Disney" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Disney" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Disney">Disney</keyword>, and Fox — have been arguing that their bundle of channels was going to appeal to people who didn't pay for <keyword id="20012655" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Cable-TV" source="keywords">cable TV</keyword>. But it seems very likely that many of their customers would be existing cable TV subscribers who are trading down from a more expensive package of channels to Venu's "skinny" package. Which means that even if Venu eventually launches, it won't help the cable TV industry stem its losses. But Moffett and Nathanson now doubt the Venu owners are going to end up fighting the lawsuit that has tabled their launch. That's because, like my colleague James Faris, they think <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/venu-fubo-tv-cable-bundle-cord-cutting-disney-fox-wbd-2024-8">the suit could end up blowing up the industry's long-standing practice of "bundling" channels together</a> — which means that a cable TV distributor that wants to sell Disney's ESPN also has to sell Disney-owned channels like Disney or ABC in the same package. And if that happened, things would totally collapse for the industry. A Venu rep declined to comment. Last week, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://awfulannouncing.com/espn/jimmy-pitaro-defend-venu-sports.html">ESPN boss Jimmy Pitaro defended the Venu package to a group of reporters</a> and pledged that his company would keep fighting its suit. Reliance Jio and Airtel add nearly 3.5 million subscribers in April 2024

The IPO, which closes on October 17, has already attracted significant attention from retail and institutional investors. The issue was subscribed 0.27x in the retail category, 0.05x in the QIB (qualified institutional buyers) category and 0.13x in the NII (non institutional investors) category. <keyword id="19972907" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="retail-investors" source="keywords">Retail investors</keyword> placed bids for 1.3 crore shares, as against the 4.94 crore shares which were offered to them. In contrast, Hyundai employees showed strong support for the IPO, bidding for 6,28,509 shares, as against the 7,78,400 shares allocated to them. Just a day before, Hyundai had raised Rs 8,315.3 crore from about 225 <keyword id="21330641" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="anchor-investors" source="keywords">anchor investors</keyword>. The list included several marquee global names, like the <keyword id="22882636" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Government-of-Singapore" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Government of Singapore" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Government of Singapore">Government of Singapore</keyword>, New World Fund Inc, and the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board. These institutions, along with Fidelity, Government Pension Fund Global, and American Funds Insurance Series New World Fund, invested a combined Rs 2,191.66 crore in the company. Other notable participants in the anchor round included Vanguard, Blackrock, Goldman Sachs and JP Morgan. Hyundai Motor India allocated 4.2 crore equity shares to these anchor investors at Rs 1,960 per share. Also, 34.42% of the entire allocation to anchor investors went to 21 domestic mutual funds via 83 schemes. AMCs (asset management companies) like ICICI, Invesco, Kotak and UTI were part of this round. While the current IPO is entirely OFS (offer for sale), which means that no part of the proceeds will go to Hyundai Motor India, the company has announced that it plans to invest more than Rs 33,000 crore over the next 10 years in India. The country is an important market for the South Korean automobile giant, given that it is the 2nd largest OEM (original equipment manufacturer) in the passenger vehicle space in India. However, the market is already preparing for muted listing day gains, with the company's GMP dropping to Rs 59 today. Hyundai is estimated to list at Rs 2,019 per today's GMP, taking the expected gain/loss per share to a minuscule 3.01%, as per data from IPO site Chittorgarh.

Airtel’s active subscribers stand at 384.16 million users out of its 386.52 million users, which is 99.07% of its total user base. <h2>Vi continues to bleed subscribers</h2>Despite various attempts from the company, Vi continues to lose subscribers. The company lost nearly a million users in May 2024 with a decline of 9,24,797 users. The company’s subscriber base decreased from 219.08 million in April 2024 to 218.16 million users in May 2024. Out of the 218.16 million users, the company’s active user base stands at 190.97 million users. <h2>State-run BSNL loses over half a million users</h2>State-run telco Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) reported a loss of 0.51 million subscribers in May 2024, taking its total user base from 86.84 million in April 2024 to 86.33 million in May 2024. BSNL was recently in the news as social media users protested against the price hike announced by Jio, Airtel and Vi, calling for users to port to BSNL. We will have to wait for a few months to know whether this movement actually transferred to real life or was just limited to social media. <h2>MNP requests continue to grow</h2>Mobile number portability (MNP), which allows users to shift from one telecom operator to another, recorded 12 million requests during April 2024. With this, the total number of MNP requests received since the introduction of this in November 2010 has reached 985.60 million.
