JioBharat captures 50% market share in sub-Rs 1,000 segment: Reliance annual report

The <keyword id="2619929" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="central-consumer-protection-authority" source="Orion">Central Consumer Protection Authority</keyword> (CCPA) has passed an order on violation of consumer rights by e-commerce platform <keyword id="6354742" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="flipkart" source="Orion">Flipkart</keyword> for allowing sale of domestic pressure cookers in violation to mandatory standards. According to CCPA Chief Commissioner <keyword id="1868624" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="nidhi-khare" source="Orion">Nidhi Khare</keyword>, the CCPA has directed Flipkart to notify consumers of all 598 pressure cookers sold on its platform, recall the pressure cookers and reimburse their prices to the consumers and submit a compliance report of the same within 45 days. The company has also been directed to pay a penalty of Rs 1,00,000 for allowing sale of such pressure cookers on its e-commerce platform and violating rights of consumers. The <keyword id="6378065" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="central" source="Orion">Central</keyword> government, from time to time, notifies the <keyword id="10524664" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="quality-control-orders" source="Orion">Quality Control Orders</keyword> specifying compulsory conformity to a standard and use of standard mark for a product to protect consumers from risk of suffering injury and harm and in the interest of people at large. The <keyword id="13478363" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="domestic-pressure-cooker" source="Orion">Domestic Pressure Cooker</keyword> (Quality Control) order, which came into effect from February 1, 2021, mandates conformity to IS 2347:2017 for all domestic pressure cookers. Therefore, since February 1, 2021, all pressure cookers are required to conform to IS 2347:2017 and due diligence is required to be done whether the pressure cookers are offered for sale online or offline. The CCPA observed that provisions in the 'Flipkart terms of use' such as mandatory use of the words 'Powered by Flipkart' on every invoice of the product and distinguishing sellers as gold, silver and bronze for distribution of various benefits indicates the role played by Flipkart in sale of the pressure cookers on its e-commerce platform. Flipkart admittedly earned a total fee of Rs 1,84,263 through sale of such pressure cookers on its e-commerce platform. It was observed by CCPA that when Flipkart has gained commercially from the sale of such pressure cookers, it cannot alienate itself from the role and responsibility arising out of their sale to consumers. Flipkart to pay Rs 1L fine for selling sub-standard pressure cookers

The <keyword id="32723" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="defence" source="Orion">defence</keyword> ministry has approved a fresh list of 928 components and subsystems which will only be procured from the domestic industry after a ban on their import kicks in under a staggered time-line of around five-and-half years. The ministry on Sunday said the aim of the move is in sync with the government's overall aim to promote 'Atmanirbharta' (self-reliance) in defence production. It is the fourth such "positive indigenisation list (PIL)" comprising line replacement units, sub-systems and components used for various military platforms, equipment and weapons. "To promote 'Aatmanirbharta' in defence and minimise imports by defence public sector undertakings, the <keyword id="6369097" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="ministry-of-defence" source="Orion">Ministry of Defence</keyword> has approved fourth Positive Indigenisation List (PIL) of 928 strategically-important line replacement units/sub-systems/spares and components, including high-end materials and spares, with import substitution value worth Rs 715 crore," the ministry said in a statement. The aim of the indigenisation list is also to minimise imports by the defence public sector undertakings (DPSUs). The defence ministry has set specific timelines for import ban of the items, spanning the period from December 2023 to December 2028. This list is in continuation to the three similar PILs that were brought out in December 2021, March 2022 and August 2022 "These lists contain 2,500 items which are already indigenised and 1,238 (351+107+780) items which will be indigenised within the given timelines," the ministry said. Of the 1,238, 310 items have been indigenised so far, it said. The items which were already indigenised comprised 262 from the first PIL, 11 from the second list and 37 from the third PIL, according to the ministry. "The DPSUs will undertake indigenisation of these items through different routes under 'Make' category and in-house development through the capabilities of MSMEs and private Indian industry, thereby providing impetus to the growth in economy, enhanced investment in defence and reduction in import dependence of DPSUs," the ministry said. "In addition, this will augment the design capabilities of the domestic defence industry by involving academia and research institutions," it said. In a tweet, Defence Minister <keyword id="6355121" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="rajnath-singh" source="Orion">Rajnath Singh</keyword> said the Narendra Modi government is committed towards indigenisation and ensuring self reliance in the defence sector. "Keeping this in mind, the 4th Positive Indigenisation List (PIL) of 928 strategically-important Line Replacement Units (LRUs)/Sub-systems/Spares and Components has been approved," he said. "The list includes high-end materials and spares, with import substitution value worth Rs 715 crore," Singh added. The ministry said DPSUs will soon initiate procurement action for these notified items. Govt approves 4th 'positive indigenisation list' of sub-systems to promote domestic defence industry

New Delhi, Jan 22 () Tata Communications, in which the government holds 26.12 per stake, on Wednesday said that it has made no provision for the telecom department's demand of Rs 6,633 crore for AGR dues as the Supreme Court order did not include appeal of the company which is still pending before the court. 
The company said that it has replied to the demand cum notice sent by the DoT in the second quarter ended September 2019 but it has not received any response from the department.
The Supreme Court has upheld DoT method of calculating revenue share between telecom companies and the government in its order dated October 24, 2019. Based on this order, DoT estimates that telecom companies are required to jointly pay around Rs 1.47 lakh crore by January 23.
 The DoT is learnt to have given no relaxation to the companies on the payment of AGR dues.
Tata Communications said that it has received demand of Rs 6,633.43 crore from the Department of Telecom towards licence fee on its adjusted gross revenue for the financial year 2006-07 till 2017-18 
"The company has existing appeals relating to its ILD and NLD licences which were filed in the past and are pending at the Hon'ble Supreme Court and Hon'ble Madras High Court and the company's appeals is not included in the Hon'ble Supreme Court ruling of October 24, 2019," the company said in its financial report. 
The company said that it believes that all its licenses are different from unified access services licence which was the subject matter of Supreme Court judgement. 
"The company has responded to the DoT denying and disputing the amounts claimed by the DoT in the demand cum show cause notice. The company has not received any response from the DoT after the submission," the note said. 
Tata Communications auditor in the note said the company is of the view that it will be able to defend its position and has obtained a legal opinion in this regard. 
"Currently the financial results do not include any adjustment pertaining to the same," the auditor note said.

Realme’s sub-brand DIZO launches its first budget smartwatch in India at ₹3,499

<keyword id="2573068" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="kinara-capital" source="Orion">Kinara Capital</keyword>, which offers unsecured business loans for MSMEs, on Friday said it has raised Rs 200 crore led by British International Investment (BII), the UK's development finance institution and impact investor. Existing equity investors <keyword id="4657434" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="nuveen" source="Orion">Nuveen</keyword> and the ASN Microkredietfonds advised by Triple Jump also participated in the funding round. With this funding, <keyword id="1280640" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="kinara" source="Orion">Kinara</keyword> Capital aims to grow 5 times by 2025 and reach an asset under management (AUM) of Rs 6,000 crore. "The combined expertise and capital infusion from BII, Nuveen and Triple Jump, will expand Kinara Capital's offerings to meet the rising demand of the MSME sector in India. With this support, we, at Kinara Capital, are further motivated to deliver on our mission of financial inclusion," said Hardika Shah, Founder and CEO of Kinara Capital. More than 300 MSME sub-sectors across manufacturing, trading and services sectors can digitally avail 'myKinara' collateral-free business loans in the range of Rs 1-30 lakh. Kinara Capital plans to reach over 2,00,000 MSMEs across more than 100 cities in the next three years. Women-led Kinara Capital raises Rs 200 cr to empower MSMEs in India

Domestic electronics brand <keyword id="71696" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Micromax">Micromax</keyword> on Friday unveiled a new smartphone sub brand 'in' and will soon introduce a new range of products under the new sub-brand. To begin the re-entry into the smartphone segment, Micromax plans to invest Rs 500 crore and will build products from ground-up for the new-age consumers in the country, the company said in a statement. The Ministry of Electronics and IT last week approved several non-Chinese companies including Bhagwati (Micromax) for manufacturing of mobile phones in the country under the government's Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme. "We are delighted to make a comeback in the India market with our sub brand 'in'. When you have the word India or 'in' on you, it gives you a sense of responsibility," said Rahul Sharma, Co-founder, Micromax. With the 'in' brand, "we will provide a bona fide choice that will allow consumers to edge ahead with high performance oriented products, without infringing on their privacy," he added. Micromax has manufacturing facilities at two locations -- Bhiwadi and Hyderabad. The brand has a capacity of producing over 20 lakh phones per month. The brand is also working on strengthening its already established retail and distribution network. Currently, the company has a retail presence in the form of more than 10,000 outlets and over 1,000 service centres. <ul><li>Founders of <keyword id="12649853" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Lights-Out-studio" source="Orion">Lights Out Studio</keyword>, <keyword id="12649855" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="saksham-mendiratta" source="Orion">Saksham Mendiratta</keyword>, Business Growth and <keyword id="12649856" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="adil-singh" source="Orion">Adil Singh</keyword>, Experience Design with a bunch of 30-year-olds, turned their company around, from a debt of Rs 30 lakh to revenues crossing Rs 5 crore in three years.</li><li>After surviving through a huge debt and rebranding its studio to keep up with the pace, <keyword id="444906" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Lights-Out" source="Orion">Lights Out</keyword> Studio is all set to clock Rs 5 Crore this fiscal.</li><li>We speak to the founders of Lights Out on their journey so far, find out more about the factors that got them out of their debt during a global pandemic, and discuss their larger vision for the studio.</li></ul>The global pandemic and the following lockdown pushed many established companies to the brink of bankruptcy, small organisations found their troubles heightened and budding business aspirants kept their dreams on hold for a year and a half. With demand slowing down and the cost of input rising, the earnings of many MSMEs took a hit. UX Design Studio, Lights Out, also found it difficult to close its debt. As the pandemic receded and the economy improved, Lights Out Studio pulled itself out of its debt and is now on the road to profitability. Lights Out, which started as a Digital Agency in 2018, decided to pivot its focus to Product Design in 2020. It was quick to realise that studios’ diversification and rapid experimentation reduces much of the risks that Startups face in pursuing one single idea to exhaustion. Good execution of the Studio model can result in multiple successful products in a year and as Greg Isenberg, Founder of Late Checkout predicted, product studios represent the future of Startups. Studios might give a way to eliminate much of the risk without losing out on the possible reward. After surviving through a debt of Rs 20 lakh and on its way to clock 5 crore in revenues, Lights Out has now transformed into a human-centered &amp; design-solution led powerhouse. We spoke to Founders of Lights Out Studio, Saksham Mendiratta, Business Growth and Adil Singh, Experience Design about their learnings from this experience, challenges ahead and vision for the studio. Q. Can you walk us through your journey so far and share a few key milestones? We started as a Digital Agency back in 2018. Grew to about 6 team members and 75L in revenue. But the business didn’t scale well as we weren’t excited about building a social media agency. Most “agencies” in India fall into this trap of growth / scale: new clients, hence hire, deliver mediocre work (or in most cases, clients don’t approve of the quality since they’re forever riding on FOMO), client drops, new client comes in, the vicious cycle continues. We just didn’t want to be a mediocre player in a very big pool. Meanwhile, Product Design (website &amp; apps) was emerging as our area of strength and hence we decided to pivot in early 2020 to just become a ‘<keyword id="12649858" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="product-studio" source="Orion">Product Studio</keyword>.’ Little did we know that we’d be hit by a pandemic right then. We almost started the new financial year with a loss of 20 lakhs and then built our customer base one by one purely focussed on Product Design. The journey of growth into a niche is more satisfying (and painstakingly long) than that of a generalist. Another key milestone was our entry point into the US market with a key collaboration with <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/mrniksharma/">Nik Sharma</a> was a turning point, that got us new customers and helped build a solid portfolio, in the US. Sharpening our focus further, we entered into original content creation with our podcast &amp; newsletter IP’s, that helped build solid credibility in the Indian market, especially amidst DTC business builders. From here on, we’ve now started to invest in emerging DTC businesses: our understanding of the sector is very high and we know how to grow consumer-tech business. This should help cement our position as an investor and build the mindset of backing great founders &amp; teams. Q. What does your clientele look like today? We work with businesses that qualify 3 parameters: <ul><li>High-growth</li><li>Consumer-tech</li><li>Serving affluent markets</li></ul>Our past clientele include: CureFit, Kapiva, Fittr, The Souled Store, Pela Case (Canada), Calamus Ultrabikes, SugarFit, HDFC, Sharma Brands, to name a few. Q. You started 3 years ago as a Digital Agency and shortly in 2020 after the revamp, you had to face your biggest crisis ever. Tell us what kind of challenges did you face as a relatively new business? As a new business that had just rebranded (in March 2020), we were pushed to start from ground zero when the pandemic hit. With just a couple of customers that we retained, we narrowed our focus and area of work furthermore from there on. Staying niche helped build experience &amp; credibility in one sector: consumer-tech. And consumer-tech (largely DTC businesses) has risen massively in the past few months, thanks to the global increase in online spends. We were quick to realise that there’s no dominance in this sector when it comes to business design &amp; technology consulting. And hence, the leapfrogging pace came in naturally. We retained our focus on culture, worked with selective clients, and stayed true to adding more value to existing businesses as opposed to bringing in new ones (retention is far easier than acquisition). We also built internal content IP’s through our podcasts &amp; newsletters, that become a distribution engine for our thoughts &amp; experience in this sector. And right there, the perfect mix of a service-based consulting business was born. Q. You have managed to turn around your company from a debt of Rs 20 lakh to revenues crossing Rs 5 crore this year. So, how did you make that happen? Which expenses did you cut back on and where did you turn your focus? Scale has purely been a sub-set of our quality of work. We focussed on fewer projects and massive turn-arounds in each of the projects we worked upon, that helped build our work-of-mouth credibility. Every single project that we’ve worked on in the past few months, has been a referral. We also focussed on building a team that comes with an entrepreneurial mindset. Every single team member has contributed to the growth of the business by doubling up on ownership &amp; learning. And that’s been one huge differentiator in our journey. Instead of cutting down, we ramped up our expenses on building in-house content, that has had a long-term benefit for us. Instant gratification was never our thing and we’ve always aimed for a longer vision. Q. The product designing industry and client needs are evolving rapidly. How are you keeping up with the pace? The product design industry in India takes its inspiration from the West. Given that almost 50% of our clientele is based in the US, we are far ahead of the curve to catch trends and help businesses in India implement them. Product Design for consumer tech is now catching up on building better design &amp; experiences in their products. And we’ve largely focussed on just those products that are built for affluent consumers and have a great experience wired in them. It’s for these reasons that we believe that we’re on the leading end of the product design spectrum, to bring in new trends in India and become a formidable player in the product design space. Q. What do you think sets you apart? Our approach with our customers, culture and our mindset: Customers: <ul><li>We work with high-growth businesses. Hence, we utilise past data and trends to forecast and build better experiences for them. This works in their favour since it comes from an external consultant who has the vantage point of an outsider.</li><li>We work with businesses where we solve critical business challenges: like increasing acquisition, better retention or even build communities. And so we end up working with the founding teams, for whom these projects are as critical as their core growth objectives.</li><li>We don’t work on typical briefs that most ‘agencies’ globally would want to. We spend close to 2-4 weeks just ironing out the challenge at hand, help them formulate a solid business objective and then begin work. It elongates our sales closure process, but by the time we sign off on commercials, we’ve added immense value for them to be immersed in the process with us.</li></ul>Culture: We operate as a studio in all aspects. And we absolutely hate the agency culture. Here’s how: <ul><li>Hire people who have had an entrepreneurial stint in their life. It’s a mindset that we deeply admire and propagate.</li><li>Flexibility in all senses: Our team can plan their days / weeks / months in advance since they have visibility of the projects and can tailor their personal &amp; professional commitments accordingly.</li><li>We don’t have time in / time outs or the concept of leaves</li><li>We spend time on debriefs: analysing where we went wrong as well as building on what we were great at.</li><li>We push people to come up with their own ideas (0-1) and help nurture them as independent projects that can spin off as investable businesses.</li></ul>Mindset: <ul><li>We believe in the positive sum game mindset. We put our content, strategies and even execution techniques through our content, for the industry to grow.</li><li>We wish to remain niche by design but continue to focus on adding value to each customer. It works in everyone’s favour when an external consultant comes with such a mindset.</li></ul>Q. What are the challenges ahead and what kind of changes can we see at the studio in the next few months? Being a bootstrapped business, we get lesser attention as compared to the ones who draw investments. But because we focus on profitability, it helps us reinvest back into the business and build more leverage and strengthen our moats. We’re entering DTC investments, so <keyword id="12649857" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="lights-out-venture" source="Orion">Lights Out Venture</keyword> is an off-shoot of the product studio that will start gaining momentum in the next few months. We’re keen to invest in 4-6 DTC businesses (globally) in the next calendar year, 2022. We like to go slow, but stead in our approach and hence confident of what we’re building. Q. What is your larger vision for the studio? To become a dominant expert in the consumer-tech space across: <ul><li>Building new 0-1 products, in-house that are born through assessing gaps in the market and are community-driven.</li><li>Becoming an original content creation hub pushing content across different channels of video, podcast and written content, at the intersection of business &amp; technology.</li><li>Invest and back exciting DTC businesses that help create value in the consumer-tech ecosystem.</li></ul>
