Have you ever wondered why some bosses, despite their abusive behaviour, are revered and tolerated? Take <keyword id="19907283" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="steve-jobs" source="keywords">Steve Jobs</keyword>, for example. While his leadership pushed Apple to the top, there are countless examples of Jobs being a general jerk to the people around him. Many accounts note that the Apple visionary was often observed yelling and name-calling his employees when irked — behaviour certainly unworthy of any ‘Best Boss Ever!’ mugs. But how do employees reconcile such behaviour? What makes them willing to stay under such crass leadership? A new study has answered these questions, revealing that a leader's success can significantly influence how employees interpret their actions — including abusive behaviour in some instances. <h2><keyword id="21268696" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tough-love" source="keywords">Tough love</keyword>, and little else</h2>The research surveyed 576 workers from various industries across the United States, reporting on their bosses' abusive behaviours, such as ridicule and dismissive comments, and rated their overall effectiveness. The findings showed that employees who viewed their bosses as high performers were more likely to label the abuse as "tough love" rather than outright abuse. Descriptions of tough love included phrases like “stern but caring,” “insensitive but nurturing,” and “rough but well-meaning.” “If employees see their boss as a successful leader, that seems to be incompatible with being abusive,” explained study author Robert Lount. “So they label the abuse as something more positive, like ‘tough love”. <div type="Article" hostid="261" msid="111556067" title="Having Elon Musk as a boss is a tough gig — just ask X&amp;#39;s Linda Yaccarino" mstype="2" mssubtype="0"></div>Interestingly, the study also found that employees who were subjected to abuse by high-performing bosses endured it out of hope for better <keyword id="21068409" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="career-prospects" source="keywords">career prospects</keyword>. They thought enduring such treatment might lead to promotions, which made them less likely to rebel against their tormentors. “If the leaders have high performance, that suggests they are successful at bringing out the skills of their followers,” notes author Bennett Tepper. However, this could not be further from the truth, considering how years of research have already shown that abusive behaviour is detrimental to both employees and organisations. <h2>Students think similarly</h2>These findings were further fortified in the second part of the study where 168 undergraduate students were misled into thinking they were working in teams led by MBA students. Some received abusive messages from their fictional “leaders,” while others got encouraging ones. After being told their teams either excelled or underperformed, the students evaluated their leaders. Those who received abusive messages rated their leaders as less abusive if their team performed well. <div type="Article" hostid="261" msid="111380874" title="Gen Z workers vs. millennial bosses: &amp;#39;Having high expectations and wanting work-life balance and an employer who cares isn&amp;#39;t a bad thing&amp;#39;" mstype="2" mssubtype="0"></div>“Just finding out your team did better because of your leader’s judgement really dampened the willingness to label that person as abusive — even though your leader made the exact same statements as the other leaders who were called abusive after a below-average performance,” Lount remarked. This might also explain how some abusive bosses manage to sustain longer careers. As per the authors, the high performers' track record may be “insulating” them from consequences because their employees refuse to view them as an abusive character. This study is a wake-up call for organisations to scrutinise not just what leaders achieve, but how they achieve it. No matter how impressive the results, abusive behaviour should never be excused in the name of success. A bartender at a high-end restaurant in south Brooklyn, Alessia Gonzalez doesn't feel free to speak her mind at work, at least on political issues. The neighborhood, Bay Ridge, is a Republican stronghold, and customers are often decked out in <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-madison-square-garden-rally-overshadow-economy-puerto-rico-2024-10">MAGA</a> hats.Gonzalez, 27, says that if she were to discuss her political views, particularly her belief that Israel is committing genocide against Palestinians in <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/israel-says-killed-hamas-chief-yahya-sinwar-oct-7-mastermind-2024-10">Gaza</a>, she'd be judged by coworkers and customers or face even worse consequences. "I feel like I could be fired," she says.When politics comes up at work, Gonzalez stays mum. "I feel the need to sort of put on a mask and not necessarily agree with them or show them any kind of support, but at the same time not express my own opinion so that I don't make anyone uncomfortable or make anyone look at me differently," she says.Fernando, a 30-year-old from Colombia who works in advertising in New York, is far more <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/american-republicans-in-israel-mobilizing-expat-vote-for-trump-2024-10">supportive of Israel</a>, and he too withholds his views of the conflict around his coworkers. He worries that one colleague, who is outspoken in her opposition to Israel's treatment of Palestinians, would have more questions than he's willing or prepared to answer. "I don't say anything about it, because my thoughts are sometimes very opposite," says Fernando, who asked for partial anonymity to protect his relationships.Withholding one's real views, or what public-opinion researchers call "self-silencing," appears to be widespread in the US. As part of a <a target="_blank" href="https://populace.org/research">new study</a>, the think tank Populace and the research firm YouGov conducted a survey in the US in which 58% of respondents said they thought most people don't feel comfortable expressing their honest opinions about sensitive issues and 61% said that in the past year they themselves had "avoided saying things that they believe because others might find them offensive." The study, "Social Pressure Index: Private Opinion in America," of more than 19,000 respondents found evidence that a majority of all demographic groups — age, gender, race, income, and political party — had self-silenced in the past year."Social norms have made it costly to express views that one considers to be controversial, and therefore people withhold those views," says James Gibson, a professor of government at Washington University in St. Louis who's studied public opinion for more than 40 years and was not involved in Populace's study.Not everyone agrees that all private views, regardless of how objectionable they are, should be voiced in the public square or even at home. The old saying "no politics at the dinner table" seems to have existed since there have been politics to talk about at dinner tables. Pushing certain views that violate basic social norms out of the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/discourse">discourse</a> can be a powerful form of accountability and a way to shape public debate for the better. But critics of self-censorship argue that when too many people aren't saying what they actually think, it inhibits the vigorous public debate necessary for a healthy society. "If people are self-censoring, deliberation is compromised and that's very, very damaging, in my view, to democracy," Gibson says. The study found that the more people self-silence, the less they trust other people.In the final sprint of another bilious and barbed US presidential election season, where the final polls show Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump in a deadlock, it's clear the country is deeply divided. Public-opinion experts say polarization perpetuates self-censorship by creating an environment where the perceived costs of dissent are higher. "Your brain assumes the loudest voices repeated the most are the majority," said Todd Rose, the CEO of Populace and a former professor at Harvard's Graduate School of Education. People fear repercussions for expressing opinions that differ from what they perceive to be the majority viewpoint. In turn, dishonest public debate makes us believe that we're more divided than we really are."Self-silencing can lead to a lot more than just saying nothing," Rose said. "It can end up leading to this place where public consensus looks very different than private consensus."But the more we know about what we actually believe, the likelier we may be to meet in the middle.America seems to be suffering from what the German political scientist Elisabeth Noelle-Neumann coined in the 1970s as a "<a target="_blank" href="https://www.researchgate.net/publication/228049403_The_Spiral_of_Silence_A_Theory_of_Public_Opinion">spiral of silence</a>." Noelle-Neumann argued that people are reluctant to share their opinions on controversial topics when they subconsciously perceive that the majority disagrees with them. As a result, majority views come to be seen as dominant over time, shrinking room for conversation and compromise.In reality, we very well might agree on a lot more than we admit to today. To try to measure people's private views, the Populace researchers used what's called the list-experiment method. This involved dividing respondents into two groups. One was presented a series of lists each containing three statements (e.g., "Class size significantly affects student achievement"). The other was presented with a series of identical lists but with a fourth statement added — these extra statements were the ones that the researchers were actually interested in testing (e.g., "I support school choice in public education"). For each list, respondents were asked how many of the statements they agreed with, an indirect line of questioning meant to encourage honest responses. The researchers could then compare the two groups' answers to estimate how many people actually agreed with the statements being tested. Finally, the researchers conducted a separate, "public" survey in which a different set of people were asked directly whether they agreed or disagreed with the statements being tested.Take abortion, as one example. Populace found that Protestant, Roman Catholic, Jewish, and Muslim respondents in the list experiment were all more likely than comparable respondents in the public survey to support the idea that "abortion should be legal in most cases." While just 39% of Protestants in the traditional survey agreed with that statement, Populace estimated that 54% agreed in the private structure. Among Muslims, the difference was 43% agreeing with the statement versus an estimated 66% who privately agreed. Overall, Populace found that 55% of respondents publicly said abortion should be legal in most cases, compared with 63% thought to have privately agreed. (Both figures were far higher than those in polling from <a target="_blank" href="https://www.pewresearch.org/wp-content/uploads/sites/20/2024/05/PP_2024.5.13_abortion_TOPLINE.pdf">Pew</a> and <a target="_blank" href="https://news.gallup.com/poll/321143/americans-stand-abortion.aspx">Gallup</a>, which included question wording with a wider range of possible responses than the agree-disagree format of the Populace study.)Democrats and Republicans were also more privately aligned on the question of defunding the police. While 27% of Democratic respondents publicly agreed with the statement "I support defunding the police," just 3% privately supported the movement. At the same time, just 1% of Republicans privately supported it and 6% publicly supported it.The survey also found that Republicans and wealthier people were more likely to privately feel that society isn't fair than they publicly acknowledged. Rose posited that Democrats tend to be more publicly concerned with unfairness, particularly when it comes to marginalized groups. Republicans define themselves in opposition to that. That dynamic is on display in this election as, for example, former Trump attacks Harris for defending a federal law that permits government-funded gender-affirming healthcare for prisoners and migrants. But privately, they acknowledged that they agree. While 50% of Republicans publicly said "we live in a mostly fair society," just 11% privately agreed.Another thing liberals and conservatives might secretly agree on: that they don't trust the government, at all. Democrats were far more likely to differ in their private and public responses on this: While 36% publicly agreed with the statement "In general, I trust the government to tell me the truth," just 5% were estimated to have privately agreed. Similarly, 2% of Republicans were thought to privately trust the government to tell the truth, while 14% said so publicly. Other surveys have <a target="_blank" href="https://www.pewresearch.org/politics/2015/11/23/1-trust-in-government-1958-2015/">similarly found</a> historically low levels of trust in major institutions like the government and the media across the political spectrum.Rose is particularly concerned about low levels of trust — of the government, the media, and other people. A lack of social trust causes people to resent each other, look for scapegoats, and become susceptible to demagoguery, he said. "By almost any measure, social trust is a phenomenal predictor of the health and vibrancy of democracies," Rose says.Not everyone is convinced that American society is suffering from a complete breakdown in societal trust. Gibson argues the long-established survey measure of whether we trust each other — agreement with the statement that "in general, most people can be trusted" — is too vague to be accurate. "You've got to build in some context to let people know what the question is. You can't allow their imagination just to go crazy."Overall, certain groups — including Gen Zers, political independents, and college graduates — were more likely to produce dramatically different results in the public and private surveys, Populace found. Gibson speculated that this might be because these groups tend to be more aware of social norms, and sensitive to the costs of violating them.Gen Zers, 72% of whom said they had self-silenced in the past year, might be influenced by their heavy use of social media, which "makes it very easy to manufacture false consensus," Rose argues. They also have a particularly keen awareness of being harassed or canceled for voicing unpopular opinions. For wealthier and more-educated people, the costs of offending customers, an audience, a fellow country-club member, or a business partner might be higher. "In a society where reputation matters a lot, in an attention economy, there's actually a lot more incentive to hold views that are consistent with what you think people want to hear," Rose says. The risks of social ostracism might not be as acute for lower-income people and those with less education, as they're often already socially and economically excluded. And ironically, the Silent Generation (born from 1928 to 1945) reported self-silencing the least.Engaging in public debate or even just a dinner-table discussion can be contentious and uncomfortable. But Rose and Gibson argue that the only way to build a less polarized and self-censoring society is through hard conversations."As we start to find the moral courage to be honest with each other, respectfully," Rose says, "I think you're going to see the revealing of a common ground that we can start to anchor in and start to try to solve some of the real problems we face as a country."That revelation, however, will have to wait until after Election Day.<a target="_blank" rel="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/author/eliza-relman">Eliza Relman</a> is a policy correspondent focused on housing, transportation, and infrastructure on Insider's economy team.

So a UK company called Virgin Media O2 is offering a solution: an AI grandmother named Daisy.In a video demonstration last week, the company showed how someone could deploy the AI chatbot to waste a scammer's time on their behalf."This state-of-the-art AI Granny's mission is to talk with fraudsters and waste as much of their time as possible with human-like rambling chat to keep them away from real people while highlighting the need for consumers to stay vigilant as the UK faces a fraud epidemic," the company said.The problem is worldwide. Almost 1 in 3 Americans have been <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/online-scams-fraud-liability-banks-government-ftc-2024-10">the victim of a scam</a> in the past year, with an average loss of $1,600 a person, according to a study from IPX, a financial analysis firm. According to the Federal Trade Commission, consumers reported more than $10 billion in losses last year from online scams.Virgin Media O2 says it decided to create Daisy after conducting research that showed that 71% of Brits wanted to retaliate against scammers but that most of them didn't want to spend the time to do so.So the company partnered with one of the most popular scambaiters on YouTube, Jim Browning, to train the AI chatbot. Browning is known for pretending to be a clueless victim long enough to frustrate scammers. Browning has more than 4.3 million subscribers.Virgin Media O2 told BI in a statement that Daisy "combines various AI models which work together to listen and respond to fraudulent calls instantaneously and is so lifelike it has successfully kept numerous fraudsters on calls for 40 minutes at a time.""Daisy is turning the tables on scammers — outsmarting and outmaneuvering them at their own cruel game simply by keeping them on the line," director of fraud at Virgin Media O2, Murray Mackenzie, said. "But crucially, Daisy is also a reminder that no matter how persuasive someone on the other end of the phone may be, they aren't always who you think they are."

And more than one in three remote workers say they only get up for 10 minutes or less until it's time to sign off.By comparison, the average worker — including those who head into the office — stands for about 101 minutes, according to the findings from MyBioSource, which sells supplies used in biological and medical research. The <a target="_blank" href="https://www.mybiosource.com/learn/exploring-the-impact-of-standing-on-health-and-work/">survey</a> of 1,000 workers took place in mid-January.Much of the debate in recent years about <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/some-tech-workers-happy-after-return-to-office-debate-blind-2023-6">where workers do their jobs</a> often centers on areas like collaboration, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/wfh-work-from-home-decreases-productivity-18-percent-study-rto-2023-8">productivity</a>, and achieving a work-life balance. Yet the survey findings signal that rolling out of bed and into a home office could dent some workers' health."If you look at people working at home, you'll find that they are not as active as they otherwise would be," Alan Hedge, a professor emeritus in the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.human.cornell.edu/hcd">Department of Human Centered Design</a> at Cornell University, told Business Insider.Hedge, who has studied workplace ergonomics for decades and wasn't involved in the survey, said the challenge with working from home isn't just about how long people sit or stand. Many workers are also likely maintaining poor posture by sitting on a couch, at a table, or on a bed. He added that, too often, workers look down at a laptop or phone, causing up to a sixfold increase in strain on their necks."It's critical that you don't just think in terms of time here — that you think in terms of working in a healthy posture," Hedge said.<h2>After about 20 minutes, it's time to get up</h2>Hedge recommends workers follow <a target="_blank" href="https://ergo.human.cornell.edu/CUESitStandPrograms.html">this approach</a>: 20 minutes sitting with good posture, eight minutes standing — maybe at a standing desk — and then two minutes of standing and moving.For a workday that lasts seven and a half hours, this translates to five hours of sitting, two hours of standing, and a half hour of moving. Critically, he said, the regimen results in 16 transitions when people go from sitting to standing and standing to sitting. He said research by NASA found that number of ups and downs was beneficial.Hedge said the recommendation for standing for eight minutes reflects that many people begin to lean after too much longer. That can result in bad posture, even for someone using a standing desk. In general, he said, what's more important than the specific numbers is to build a pattern of moving into the workday. <h2>Movement can boost productivity</h2>All of this moving around raises obvious questions about getting work done. Some workers feel pressure to remain <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/employees-stop-working-so-hard-happier-productive-company-workers-managers-2022-7">welded to their laptops</a> because they have so much to do. But Hedge said breaks — including time not spent staring at a screen — are essential and can <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-be-more-productive-at-work-take-breaks-2017-7">boost productivity</a> and creativity.In the survey, more than one in four workers said they didn't go outside during the workday. Getting fresh air can <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-spending-more-time-outside-is-healthy-2017-7">reduce stress and fatigue</a>.Hedge said more employers need to encourage their people to learn what he calls a pattern of moving. The idea is to build activities like standing into our day so they become as routine as pouring a coffee in the morning. Learning to take breaks and move as part of the natural course of a workday is more effective, Hedge said, than screen pop-ups or a nudge from a smartwatch that it's time to get up."Eventually, people do feel, 'Boy, this technology is nagging me.' And they begin to ignore it," he said.Workers, or their employers, don't have to spend as much as they once did on the tools needed to work safely, Hedge said, because prices for equipment that can give an ergonomic boost have come down."You need the right pattern of movement. You need the right products that you're going to work with, and you need the right postures to work in," he said. "If you can get pattern, product, posture all synchronized, you will never have a problem. And you'll be highly productive."

What you're probably doing wrong if you work from home      

The best stretch of my working life is a period I remember fondly as "Sundays with Jennifer," six months or so in college when I was waiting tables alongside my favorite coworker, named — you guessed it — Jennifer. We spent our shifts chatting and screwing around, treating patrons as little more than an interruption in our weekly hang. We spent weeks planning a "cake party" for our other work friends. One day she brought in weed cookies and one of our coworkers got so high they couldn't figure out how to get out of the bathroom. I do not know if our customers enjoyed the Em-Jen experience, let alone our employer, but we did.Would I do that today? Ehhh, almost definitely not. For one thing, I take work more seriously now. I'm also more ambivalent about the idea of making close friends at work. I've been at Business Insider for only a few months, and I work in a hybrid situation, so it's trickier to befriend colleagues. It's not that I don't want to get to know anyone, but as someone who's been guilty of blurring the line between professional and personal too much in the past, I've found it refreshing to have some distance. This realization is coming at a time when <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/office-friendship-dead-remote-work-employers-turnover-great-resignation-2022-4">work friendships are dying out</a>, and the more I think about it, the more I think it may be for the best.The most obvious reason for the demise of the work friend is the rise of remote work. It's hard to make a new work bestie via Slack and Zoom. While most white-collar workers <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/remote-work-from-home-return-to-office-americans-employment-wfh-2023-10">aren't fully remote anymore</a>, many are still in <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hybrid-work-here-to-stay-ceos-rto-remote-2024-4">hybrid situations</a>. The pandemic changed the way people interact and socialize with their colleagues, even in person. We're no longer in the trenches together day after day. This shifting context has led to some changes in the way we develop relationships at work.There's been a lot of alarmist rhetoric around friendless work. The general line is that work friendships are good because social connections at work <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/work-friends-spouses-loneliness-remote-hybrid-benefits-of-work-connections-2024-6">keep people productive and engaged and help them manage stress</a>. These friendships improve their job satisfaction and make them less likely to quit. Even if someone is sure they don't care about making nice with their colleagues, networking is still a thing, and refusing to play ball may very well hurt their career in the long run. The lonest of the lone wolves needs some sort of connection."I really don't think human beings can toil at their jobs for 40, 50, 60 hours a week without social support in a healthy manner for a sustained amount of time," said Constance Noonan Hadley, an organizational psychologist who founded the Institute for Life at Work.I'm not disputing that personal bonds are important in the working world. Developing a rapport with colleagues is a good idea, but that doesn't mean everyone needs to scramble to find an office BFF. Even before the pandemic, workplaces moved out of the center of people's lives as they aged. You get older and have kids, and you're not so interested in chatting with your 20-something colleagues about their wild weekends. Or you become a manager, and the happy-hour invites slow to a trickle because people don't want to knock back a bunch of beers in front of the boss.More working from home and a detachment from the physical office sped up this transition for many people. Worse things could happen. After years of being told to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/bring-your-whole-self-to-work-risks-experience-2024-2">bring our whole selves to work</a>, many of us could stand to leave a little more at home. Much of the research on friendships at work focuses on how it's a good deal for employers. Employees' feeling a sense of kumbaya helps them get more done and improves bottom-line results. In some cases, this can come at the expense of employees' best interests. Deeper emotional ties can make them more hesitant to leave their jobs — they're comfortable, and they don't want to leave their friends behind. That's great for bosses, but for workers, I mean, who cares? I've loved gossiping with coworkers, but I hope that never caused any of them to doubt whether they should leave for a better opportunity."If you feel disconnected from your coworkers, you're less of a team player. But those are all work-related outcomes," said William Chopik, a social-personality psychologist at Michigan State University who studies relationships. "The reason people work from home is because it's good for their personal life." Chopik added that usually research on working from home focuses on whether it makes people worse at their jobs and not on whether, for example, the lack of a commute benefits them.There are plenty of non-career-related downsides, too. Work friendships can lead to cliquishness and exclusion or even just <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/coworker-badmouthed-to-everyone-forced-to-quit-2024-4">endless whining sessions</a> among colleagues. Workplaces are often competitive, and if one friend gets ahead, tensions can arise. We are sometimes <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/signs-youre-being-undermined-at-work-2016-6">suspicious of our coworkers</a>, wondering if they're interacting with us only because they want something, and we doubt we can trust them at all.On a fundamental level, work friendships aren't the same as friendship friendships. Confusing the two can lead to tension or hurt feelings. A 2018 paper argues that the "four defining features of friendship (informality, voluntariness, communal norms, and socioemotional goals) are in tension with four fundamental elements of organizational life (formal roles, involuntary constraints, exchange norms, and instrumental goals). We hopefully aren't friends with others because we're getting something proportionate and specific out of the relationship in the way we are with work. Saying something embarrassingly stupid in front of a friend is much more acceptable than saying it in front of a coworker, where a certain level of formality is usually part of the deal."I think we should try to bring our best professional selves to work, but why should we bring our intimate selves to work?" said Hakan Ozcelik, a professor of management at the College of Business Administration at Sacramento State University. Shirly and Erez Weinstein had in many ways achieved the American dream. They immigrated to the United States from Israel in the early aughts, bought a house in the suburbs of Atlanta with access to high-quality public schools for their two kids, and excelled in their tech careers. There was just one problem: They weren't happy."Our life was just really busy," Shirly Weinstein told me. "Work, school, after-school — we hardly had any down time or time as a family."They also weren't satisfied with the education options for their kids. "We wanted something more from school," Erez Weinstein said. "We tried Montessori, charter, public, but all these different options felt like more of the same."The kids felt similarly. "Life was boring," Ella, their 11-year-old daughter, told me. So, to shake things up, in 2018 the family sold most of their possessions, bought an RV, and started traveling full time around the US and abroad while homeschooling.For the next four years, the kids did not attend formal classes, instead learning from their experiences in different countries, and did occasional academic work on digital platforms like Khan Academy. Then, in 2022, the family learned about <a href="https://www.boundless.life/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Boundless Life</a>, a startup trying to build a global network for <a href="https://www.insider.com/we-travel-four-months-every-year-support-schooling-2023-2">digital-nomad families</a>, complete with built-in community, project-based education, and furnished homes where families live for three months at a time.While the phrase "<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/partying-yachts-drugs-remote-work-destroying-worlds-most-instagrammable-destinations-2021-7">digital nomad</a>" might conjure an image of a single 27-year-old software engineer writing code from a hostel in Chiang Mai, Thailand, Boundless Life — which has locations in Portugal, Indonesia, Italy, and Greece — targets a different demographic of long-term travelers: parents and their elementary-school-age children. The startup's aim, according to its cofounder Mauro Repacci, is to allow parents "the freedom to travel as a single person might, but with your kids."Boundless Life is one of a handful of programs — like the <a href="https://www.greenschool.org/bali/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Green School</a> in Bali and <a href="https://www.thehiveadventure.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Hive</a> in the Dominican Republic — that cater primarily to international students and their remote-working parents. While there isn't great data on it, experts I spoke with say that only a small fraction of the estimated 35 million global digital nomads are traveling with children — which makes sense. Whether figuring out school or supporting kids' ability to maintain lasting friendships, many parents are wary of uprooting their families' lives for long-term travel.But with the growth of remote work and newfound energy to reimagine education in response to the coronavirus pandemic, businesses are jumping at the opportunity to make "nomading" with children a real possibility.Last summer I visited the Boundless campus in Sintra, Portugal. When I arrived by train from Lisbon, it was easy to see why the company had chosen the medieval mountain town as its pilot location. The Moorish castles and orange clay roofs give the town a classic European charm, and it has just the right amount of creature comforts and English-speaking waitstaff to please less adventurous travelers. At just shy of 400,000 inhabitants, Sintra is also big enough to absorb the 25 Boundless families without the expats dominating all the local haunts. <div type="image" title="A chef preparing a meal in a kitchen with a mosaic tile floor." height="1536" width="2048" msid="104016349" hostid="261"></div>The Boundless community, which includes families from around the world, felt a bit like a family camp. Families each had their own private accommodations scattered throughout the city, but they frequently spent time at one another's apartments for meals and aperitifs. Parents went out for afternoon espressos and lingered at school drop-off to chat about business opportunities before heading to a mosaic-tiled coworking space replete with WiFi and Portuguese custard tarts.In the school, a remodeled two-story building blocks away from Sintra's castles, mixed-aged groups of students hunched over tubs of water to learn about density and volume. For lunch, the kids ate organic meals provided by a local chef. After school, kids from different families entertained themselves in the cobblestone streets and parks under light adult supervision. Tim, a freelance computer programmer from Ohio, joined Boundless in 2022 after taking his kids out of school at the start of COVID. "The school said 'Zoom Kindergarten,' and I said screw that," he told me.One couple from Seattle — Edward, a marketing consultant, and Jessica, an entrepreneur — not only pulled their four kids under 13 out of school to sign on with Boundless Life, but they also persuaded another family to join them for the experiment. "We wanted to travel, but you can't babysit a 1-year-old and homeschool a 7-year-old at the same time," Jessica said. "Education was the question. If we could figure out the education piece, the rest would fall into place."According to Boundless' cofounder and head of education, Rekha Magon, Boundless' vision is for families to hop to Sintra for a semester and then to Italy's Tuscany region for another, all while their children progress through the same curriculum, which extends from preschool to age 12. "Education should be removed from a single building and exist in the world," she told me. This was perfect for the Weinsteins, who consider themselves part of the <a href="https://www.insider.com/what-is-worldschooling-why-do-parents-choose-it-2022-8">worldschooling</a> movement — a growing community of families who have decided to eschew traditional education in favor of long-term travel and "learning from the school of life," as Erez Weinstein told me.Compared with all the education options they had tried in Atlanta, Boundless was the first school that seemed to align with their desire for project-based learning with a global perspective. "If Boundless had locations all over the world, we would be set," Shirly Weinstein said. "It's beyond travel. It's experiencing the world." And while the kids seemed to be thriving, perhaps the true beneficiaries were the parents. As one Boundless parent told me, "I've had more social interactions in the past week than months back home — and I didn't have to send a single email to coordinate."Boundless had recreated the village.As a Brazilian from Montreal with Italian ancestry, Mauro Repacci is a fitting founder for a company that promotes global citizenship. The idea for Boundless came about after Repacci and his cofounder Marcos Carvalho sold their previous company, a home-buying platform called NestReady, and were looking to take a sabbatical. It was the summer of 2021. COVID restrictions were loosening and the built-up demand for travel was palpable."During the pandemic, like many people, we started to ask how we wanted to live our life, how we wanted to raise our kids," Repacci told me. "And we felt like we were limiting ourselves by staying in the same country for a long time." He added, "We felt something was missing." He started to tell friends about his aspiration to travel and take time off — perhaps a few months in Costa Rica, another few in Europe or Southeast Asia. His friends were intrigued by the idea of long-term travel but had hesitations about their kids falling behind in school.<div type="image" title="Sintra portugal" height="1333" width="2000" msid="104016352" hostid="261"></div>Repacci and Carvalho started a WhatsApp group with dozens of friends and friends of friends who were all trying to figure out how to make long-term travel work with kids. They researched international schools and looked into the feasibility of hiring a private tutor to travel with them full time. Their brainstorming quickly transformed into a business idea. According to Lona Alia, the head of revenue for the nomad-travel-insurance provider SafetyWing, several factors have led to the growth of digital-nomad families. "There's remote work, the availability of high-speed internet, flexible schooling, and Airbnb," Alia, who is part of a digital-nomad family herself, told me. But perhaps the biggest factor is a cultural shift toward the value of experiences, Alia said. "Many people are realizing that the traditional path of acquiring material goods isn't necessarily the key to happiness, and are instead choosing to invest in experiences, such as travel."For the Boundless founders, figuring out the education piece of the puzzle was key. For families to actually be able to make the leap, Boundless would need a curriculum that was rigorous enough to adhere to parents' standards and flexible enough so families could bounce between locales without their kids falling behind. To solve the problem, Repacci and Carvalho brought on their head of education, Magon, and head of brand and product, Elina Zois. Boundless decided to base its educational model on the Nordic Baccalaureate, an interdisciplinary curriculum based on the Finnish education system that emphasizes project-based work, experiential learning, and cultural immersion. Classrooms are multiage and class sizes are kept small — fewer than 15 kids a class for students under 6 and fewer than 18 for those ages 6 to 12. During my visit, the school felt like a more expansive definition of what an education could be. Learning was not limited by the four walls of the classroom — it took place in parks, pottery studios, restaurants, and museums. Several educators I spoke with were skeptical about how the Boundless framework would translate into meaningful learning experiences for students from a range of academic needs, and how students would be able to integrate their Boundless experience if they transitioned back into more traditional school environments.<div type="image" title="An outdoor play area" height="1536" width="2048" msid="104016355" hostid="261"></div>But parents I met told me Boundless had sparked a level of intellectual curiosity in its children that spilled over to "normal life" upon returning stateside. "Getting to try out a different type of school was life-changing," one parent said. After returning to US public school this year, they said their kids were doing better than they had before doing Boundless. "Not because anything is better at their school this year than last year, but because they are different," the parent said.The company serves about 85 families and 250 kids during any given semester. But despite some early success, Boundless Education, like the organization itself, is still very much a startup. The school isn't accredited — though it's undergoing the accreditation process — and the administration is still figuring out the kinks, like how to quantitatively measure student growth and how to cater to older and more advanced students' needs.There are also financial and cultural barriers to joining Boundless. For one, there's the price. It costs the equivalent of about $1,600 a child, a month, to take part in Boundless Education, and the equivalent of $460 a parent, a month, for coworking and concierge services — and that doesn't include the cost of housing. Though participants were relatively diverse racially and culturally, most of the families I met in Sintra were high earners from North America.Plus, there are cultural and logistical challenges to picking up your family and living around the world for months at a time. Boundless advises families on how to obtain digital-nomad visas for countries that offer them, but the prospect of working abroad long term can be challenging depending on your country of origin. "The biggest barriers to more people nomading are in-laws, grandparents, and a lack of imagination," Andreas Wil Gerdes, a leader in the worldschooling movement, said. "For 200 years, the majority of people have lived in a work-centric model of existence. Finally, people are going back to a life-centric model, but it will take time to catch on."Gerdes is generally supportive of Boundless' mission but commented that the company served a limited slice of those who might be able to benefit from living and learning abroad. "Boundless is the brain-dead solution for people who don't want to have to make any decisions," he said. "But it's a step in the right direction."On my last night in Sintra, the Boundless families gathered together at Praia de Maçãs, a beach 20 minutes from downtown. Kids dashed in and out of the waves, occasionally running to shore to grab a snack or tug at their parents' trunks. "How long have you guys known each other?" I asked a few preteens who were building castles in the sand. "I dunno. A few days," one said, barely looking up.Standing there on the edge of the European continent, I realized that although Boundless is cloaked in the sheen of a venture-backed startup, the business is actually a return to a more collective form of child-rearing. Sure, there's an app that parents use to interact, a curriculum that uses the UN sustainability goals for lesson plans, and a business model that's a response to a global workforce trend. But as I immersed myself in this network of families who were loosely looking after one another's children, Boundless felt more retro-chic than modern. After leaving the beach, I joined the families for pizza at an outdoor restaurant. There were no iPads at the dinner table or calendar invites needed to organize the get-together. In a community full of families, conversations were not dominated by talk of academic tutors and afterschool programs. Everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. I came to Sintra thinking Boundless might be too good to be true, but perhaps that was a failure of my own imagination. Maybe I, like so many others, am still too attached to the idea that school ought to look like 20 students facing the same way in a classroom for seven hours a day. Sure, Boundless is an expensive, turn-key study-abroad experience for elementary-school-age children and their parents, but it's also a refreshing take on what it means to give a child an education, which, <a href="https://www.brookings.edu/articles/the-alarming-state-of-the-american-student-in-2022/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">especially in America</a>, is in need of a refresh.Certainly there are risks of uprooting children from their routines and communities. Programs like Boundless may not be attractive or accessible to everyone, and it's unclear whether Boundless will be able to scale its programming to meet the growing demand. But when I think about the atomization of our modern lives, each of us cordoned off in our little boxes made of ticky-tack, learning from textbooks and digital apps, I see Boundless as a welcome alternative.
