The course costs around ₹30 lakh for the five-year course and unlike many others, her father is bankrolling it, without her having to take a loan. Yet, in the last few months a lot has changed. Europe is in the throes of a possible recession, the value of Indian rupee is depreciating and more importantly, inflation in the continent is also impacting budgeted expenses. “Looks like I might have to take a loan after all because my living expenses will change drastically. I have spoken to students who live there and they all tell the same story,” Shewale sighs. Her story is similar to a number of Indian <keyword id="15304331" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="students-wanting-to-study-abroad" source="Orion">students wanting to study abroad</keyword> but those who have already taken admission this year have it worse – on rupee depreciation alone. Since the beginning of 2022, the rupee has fallen more than 7% against the dollar. <div type="image" title="rupee" height="900" width="1200" msid="94974075" hostid="261" sizebytes="49035"></div> ‘Loans could balloon by ₹3.5-5 lakh’ If a student had taken a loan in March this year, when rupee was at 75 against the dollar, it would add a few lakh into the loan, as per Ashwini Kumar, VP at MPower Financing, a public benefit corporation that helps students to study abroad. For every dollar of the loan, an extra ₹7 is added and it would inflate the loan and the interest as well. “On an average, a loan could get extended by around ₹3.5-5 lakh depending on the rupee exchange value at the time of the loan,” Kumar told Business Insider India. The problems don’t end there. Apart from tuition costs, Indian students also have to support themselves there and living expenses are going up as well. The Eurozone inflation is being <a href="https://www.euronews.com/next/2022/09/30/record-inflation-which-country-in-europe-has-been-worst-hit-and-how-do-they-compare">pegged at 10%, as per estimates</a>. Inflation in the US too has recently <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/international/us/us-inflation-soars-to-8-2-per-cent-highest-in-40-years/articleshow/94842348.cms">hit a 40-year high</a>, messing with economics of students abroad. Most Indian students head to these destinations. The third part of the triple whammy is from rising interest rates. This financial year, the Indian central bank raised repo rates four times and the base rates now stand at 5.9%. More interest rate hikes are expected in the near term and most experts see base rates stabilising once it’s around 6-6.5%. “Loans linked to MCLR and BPLR will see a gradual increase in the interest rate in the near future. The EMIs of current and future borrowers will rise due to this,” said Ankit Mehra, CEO and co-founder of GyanDhan, an education loan market place. Moreover, the psychological impact of a possible depreciation in rupee will also largely play on the minds of US and Europe-bound students and their parents, said Kumar. Students still eye foreign degrees Studying abroad is going to become much more expensive. However, experts say that this is not discouraging students from pursuing their higher education dreams. Shewale too intends to absorb the extra costs but does not intend to change her plans. “The return on investment in terms of quality of education, career growth, international exposure, skills developed, and networking has more intrinsic worth,” said Mehra. Kumar too says that students who are planning to go abroad this year and the next, have been planning it two years before, and it’s unlikely that the road bumps will change their plans, though some may choose to delay it. “There are a few sections of society wherein parents are managing the EMIs on the border, which is due to get affected. A student who had to arrange ₹25 lakh for their overseas education prior to the rate hike will find it difficult to arrange for additional funds given the parental income has not increased proportionally to the hike in the interest rates,” said Mehra. While most banks are willing to offer education loans for higher studies, but is it enough for us to just sign the documents without any planning?

	Scout for the best <keyword id="6360217" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Loan">loan</keyword> option 
	 
	It is a tedious job but it is extremely important for anyone to go through and compare the various loan options available to you. And once, you zero in on the offer that you feel suits you, you can negotiate the terms and conditions. 
	 
	Remember fluctuating rupee 
	 
	It is important to remember that fluctuation in rupee value will impact your loan. One must remember that the loan will be rupee denominated and hence on conversion into your desired foreign currency, the amount will be lower. 
	 
	“A student has to be prepared to bear this foreign exchange risk. For example, a student applies for an education loan of Rs 20 lakh. However, if the rupee weakens further due to exchange rate fluctuations, there would be an increase in the cost of education from the rupee perspective,” said Harshala Chandorkar, senior vice president, Consumer Services at <keyword id="6380215" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="CIBIL">CIBIL</keyword>. 
	 
	Plan your course of action 
	 
	In most cases, parents often sign up as a guarantor for the loan availed by you. So, its better to plan your course of action beforehand because if you delay the EMIs or default on them, it will adversely impact their CIBIL report as well. 
	 
	“Rupee depreciation also adds to the woes of many parents who fund their children’s education from their savings as they have to shell out more money. As a guarantor on your education loan your father / mother is liable for its repayment in case you fail to pay the EMIs. His / her credit report will show the details of this education loan and defaults will also show if you do not repay the EMIs on the loan. Thus, your repayment behavior will also impact your parents’ credit score,” she added. 
	 
	Spend carefully 
	 
	While you are overseas, pursuing your higher studies, it is important to do budgeting and know how much can you spend. Becoming a spend thrift can put additional burden on your financials, thus forcing you to delay or default on your loan repayments, negatively affecting your CIBIL report. In case, you cannot avoid certain expenses, consider taking up a job to meet your additional expenses. 
	 “If you have taken a loan to study abroad, timely repayment should be the top most priority. Like any other loans and credit cards, education loans are also reported to the CIBIL and get reflected in the borrower’s CIBIL Report. Transactions related to repayment of your education loan will also get reflected in your CIBIL Report and impact your CIBIL <keyword id="3332419" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="TransUnion-score">Transunion Score</keyword>. Irregular or non-repayment of EMIs on your education loan will lead to an unhealthy CIBIL Report which can hamper your chances of availing any other loan or credit card in the future,” said Chandorkar.

Try negotiating with your banks for increasing your loan term or lowering your EMIs. “With the impact of rupee fall, one can also ask for further loan from banks. Recently banks have also introduced top-up scheme for education loans where they fill the gap created by the exchange rate fluctuation. This will certainly increase the payback amount but it will help students continue with their studies,” she noted.

Here’s how the depreciation of the currency will affect the average Indian. In August 2008, the rupee was around 43 to the dollar. This means that in the span of ten years, the rupee has depreciated by 62% in nominal terms. In the weeks and months since the Congress party’s victory over Modi’s <keyword id="58687" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bharatiya-Janata-Party">Bharatiya Janata Party</keyword> in <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/here-are-some-reasons-why-indias-ruling-party-lost-to-its-main-rival-in-three-very-important-state-elections/articleshow/67057122.cms">three crucial state elections</a>, it had been widely speculated that the latter would offer a series of loan waivers to farmers in its interim budget in order to curry favour before general elections. After all, the Congress’s victory was attributed to its promise of debt relief to farmers in these states. The BJP’s potential decision to forgo further loan waivers makes fiscal sense. It is staring at a huge fiscal deficit, and if it breaches its spending targets, it could scare foreign investors away, hurt debt and equity markets and lead to depreciation of the rupee. While a <keyword id="56684" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="loan-waiver">loan waiver</keyword> can secure votes from farmers, it’s the banks, taxpayers and future governments that are on the hook for the unrecoverable debts. The waiver will eventually lead to a buildup in banks’ bad loans and shortage in funds for the purpose of extending further loans. The move echoes the views of Shaktikanta Das, the new governor of the Reserve Bank of India, who said last week that loan waivers <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/economy/policy/generalised-farm-loan-waiver-impacts-credit-culture-says-rbi-governor/articleshow/67420012.cms">would have a negative effect</a> on the country’s credit culture. If loan waivers are handed out so regularly, it is argued that it may disincentivise farmers from making payments on their loans. More importantly, smallholder farmers aren’t covered by loan waiver schemes since they can’t offer collateral to formal lending institutions like their largeholder counterparts. That means in devising a funding plan and income support for farmers, the government will prevent them from having to secure high-interest rate loans from moneylenders. It remains to be seen how the central government will finance the direct transfer, but the burden will likely be shared with state governments and involve the reallocation of funds from other agriculture schemes. On the other hand, if banks are against the idea of extending interest-free loans, the government will also be required to plug the interest gap. However, all things considered, it makes considerably more sense than a blanket loan waiver, which only provides short-term relief and does nothing to correct the longer-term problems of the agriculture sector. Income support and cheap funding to farmers will keep rural demand and investment afloat and by extension, directly support economic growth. There are long delays in getting student visas while at the same time those students, whose visas have been approved, are facing inflation due to rupee depreciation. Germany seems to be reaping the benefits due to this delay in the approval of student visas by other countries. According to a recent report by the <keyword id="432632" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="german-academic-exchange-service" source="Orion">German Academic Exchange Service</keyword> (DAAD), the number of Indian students studying in Germany increased from 17,570 in 2017 to 34,134 in 2021. Actually, education is subsidised by the German government. All international students studying in state-funded universities in Germany do not have to pay tuition fees. This is one of the biggest benefits for the international students in Germany and a major relief for Indian students amid the costlier education in other popular countries. Although various courses are available at low cost to Indian students in countries like Germany, the students do not change their preferences easily. <keyword id="2733148" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="sumeet-jain" source="Orion">Sumeet Jain</keyword>, co-founder, <keyword id="4136682" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="yocket" source="Orion">Yocket</keyword>, a community-based platform for overseas studies, said, "Due to the rupee depreciation, the average additional cost to study in the US has gone up by Rs 1.5 to 2 lakh per year. Despite this, the students do not make decisions without comprehensively evaluating various aspects. Some students, who want to pursue post research, for them there is no point in moving to other countries. While many students keep their options open. Students prefer the US for <keyword id="435553" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="stem" source="Orion">STEM</keyword> courses while for non-STEM courses they opt for the UK and Australia. Experts believe that the continued delays in visas have jeopardised the competitiveness of popular places of study. While earlier countries like the US, the UK, Australia and Canada were the first choice of the students, now Germany, Spain, France, Portugal and the UAE have emerged as the preferential places to study abroad. Significantly, the Covid-19 pandemic has proved to be a major obstacle for students who wish to pursue higher education abroad. In the US and some European countries, students are getting a waiting period of one to two years for visas. This simply means that an Indian student enrolling in a US university will be able to get a US visa after one or two years. According to industry experts, the number of Indian students moving to countries such as the US, the UK, Canada, Australia, Ireland and New Zealand stood at around 10 lakh in early 2022, almost double the levels before the pandemic. Similarly, the number of visa applications has increased much more than before, due to which now there is a delay in the visa approval. S. At the interbank foreign exchange market, the rupee opened at 79.55 against the greenback, then fell further to 79.66, registering a decline of 14 paise over its last close. On Tuesday, the rupee had finished at a nearly two-week high of 79.52. The domestic forex market was closed on Wednesday on account of Ganesh Chaturthi. Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, rose 0.28 per cent to 109. The rupee opened weaker against the dollar as prospects of further aggressive policy tightening by the US Federal Reserve and the European Central Bank (ECB) weighed on Asian currencies and equities, said Sriram Iyer, Senior Research Analyst at Reliance Securities. "Oil prices remained subdued this Thursday and could cap losses, but weak Asian and emerging market peers will cap gains," Iyer said, adding the range for the rupee in this session is 79.30 to 79.75. The global oil benchmark Brent crude futures fell 2.84 per cent to USD 96.49 per barrel. On the domestic equity market front, the 30-share BSE Sensex was trading 683.03 points or 1.15 per cent lower at 58,854.04, while the broader NSE Nifty was down 189.55 points or 1.07 per cent to 17,569.75. Foreign institutional investors turned net buyers in the capital market on Tuesday as they purchased shares worth Rs 4,165.86 crore, as per exchange data.
