She got to do incredible things, and she was always telling me about the fun she had at work. I knew the job would be perfect for me. I'm the nice guy, who thrives on making other people happy. My three sisters and I were all adopted, so I grew up knowing that caring isn't about a blood connection. It's a choice, and I wanted to choose to care for children.It was <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/uk-nannies-elite-training-self-defense-childcare-norland-college-2023-1">hard work to get into Norland College</a>. I had to redo some of my high school classes because my grades weren't high enough. Luckily, everyone from my friends and family to school counselors supported me. I think they could see how nannying was a perfect fit for my personality.<h2 id="e0564e9a-df84-464f-8e43-d515dbcc3195">I felt so awkward the first time I held an infant</h2>When I was finally <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/norland-college-nanny-school-2017-3">accepted to Norland</a>, I was the only male student in a class of 300 future nannies. Still, no one looked at me funny. We were all brought together by our passion for caring for kids, and being at Norland really validated the career ambition I'd had for so long.Despite that, there was a learning curve. The <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-labor-and-delivery-nurses-do-before-holding-a-newborn-2023-1">first time I held an infant</a> I felt so awkward. I thought, "do you really want me to hold that tiny baby?" But when I picked the baby up I was flooded with love and affection. There's just an innate human ability to be nurturing, that comes out when I'm around kids.<h2 id="900bfb52-6545-455b-8b38-6202aef13a1a">My first full-time role was caring for a 1-year-old girl</h2>People expect me to have encountered lots of pushback or barriers. Overall I haven't, but there are some misconceptions. One enduring assumption is that all male nannies must be gay. I'm straight, and so is every other male nanny I've met. I'm dating another nanny in New York, and sometimes we <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nanny-working-for-a-family-in-the-hamptons-during-pandemic-2020-5">get together with the kids</a>.I think this assumption comes from the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nannies-of-color-america-racism-tiktok-2023-1">stereotype that caregivers must be feminine</a>, with Mary Poppins energy. I have a different approach. I love introducing kids to sports and building legos. I'm great at imagination play: I can turn an empty room into a dinosaur-filled jungle, and help kids have the best day ever with nothing but their minds.Some people are thrilled to have a male nanny, because they have boys. Others have turned me down because I'm a guy. That doesn't bother me, because there are so many families out there. Last year I took my first full-time position, caring for a 1-year-old girl. I was honestly surprised that her parents chose me, and felt a little out of my comfort zone, but it was the most beautiful relationship, and we're still in touch.<h2 id="09769048-67f2-44ed-98b2-7a791fa7803e">I'm not allowed to post the kids on social media</h2>I can't say much about the family I'm working with now. Privacy and confidentiality are of the utmost importance for nannies. When I start with a new family we discuss what I can mention about them or the kids, and what I can post on<a target="_blank" href="https://www.instagram.com/the_manny_life_of_ike?igsh=MTQwemkxcnJlcTBxbQ==&amp;utm_source=qr"> my social media.</a>Not that I do too much posting — when I'm at work my personal phone is off. I have a work phone that I use for contacting the parents. There's no time for screens, because I'm always busy. That's why I prefer live-out, rather than live-in, nanny positions. When I'm at a client's house, the rest of my world is pushed aside and I'm entirely focused on the kids. At the end of the day, I can relax when I'm in my own space.Being a nanny is an incredibly high-energy job. Realistically I know I won't be able to maintain that energy forever. I plan to nanny for about eight years, and then open a childcare center in London. What I'm most looking forward to is being a dad. If I could, I would have 10 kids, but four is probably a more realistic number. No matter what, nurturing children will always be part of my life.

Keeping up with trends and lingo is part of my work. So I spend time daily on my old lady platform (Facebook) but also on Reddit, Instagram, and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tiktok-ramped-up-hiring-chinese-employees-amid-us-political-scrutiny-2024-11">TikTok</a>.TikTok and Instagram have allowed me to continue communicating with my kid even when the sound of my voice is annoying. <h2 id="13d7749f-a448-4214-a3c1-a6a69c81cb7e">We watch videos together</h2>I <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-create-healthy-boundaries-for-coparenting-after-divorce-2023-9">have shared custody</a>, so I see him every other week. A year ago, he started sending me TikToks and Reels from his dad's, with the admonishment that I would not watch them until we were together the following week. This is now a ritual. One of the first things we do when he arrives is watch everything he sent.This can be a time suck. There can be hundreds of videos to watch. But I know it's important to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/study-teens-would-rather-text-with-friends-than-hang-out-in-real-life-2018-9">find this time to connect</a>. He sometimes sends videos from school or at night after I've gone to bed so we have daily content to watch. He'll hop on the bed next to me before I go to sleep so we can watch them together and discuss. Mostly, we laugh a lot.<h2 id="50062a7a-8a22-4c97-ae3a-4e101c7654d0">He isn't into snuggles anymore</h2>This precious time is pretty much all the physical connection we have left. Gone is the little boy who loved to be carried for hikes, toddled next to me through farmer's markets, and sat on my lap while we watched movies at home. This tall, gangly kid <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/my-husband-and-i-share-family-bed-with-our-kids-2023-10">isn't into snuggles</a>. But I believe physical touch is still an important part of our bond. For him, it's OK to sit next to me with his leg touching mine if we're sharing these laughs.It's more than laughs, though. While many videos are gross or silly teenage boy humor, others are thought-provoking, sparking deep discussion and spirited debate.Politics, religion, science, life choices, and risk-taking are just some of the discussions social content has sparked. He questions things at a more advanced level than I ever could have at his age. <h2 id="7687b206-5e23-4c5a-98d2-81f88d552a13">We are learning things</h2>Recently, we had an hourlong debate about chores based on a TikTok I sent that quoted a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.bmj.com/content/337/bmj.a2338">Harvard study</a> that concludes that kids who do chores are ultimately more successful. I give him chores, but his dad doesn't. His friends who do chores get paid for them via an allowance. Nobody pays adults to do chores, so I don't pay him because, in my view, we should all contribute to the upkeep of our home for mutual good. He presented his viewpoints, and I argued each one, discussing adult responsibilities and the importance of a place that's kept nice, even if it's just for you. When it was over, he said, "About halfway through, I realized I was wrong, but I felt like I had to keep arguing." We talked about that, too — how to gracefully concede.I also use it to show him what's coming up — I have always prepared him for what's next. I send him funny videos of parents teaching their kids to drive, and he sends them back to me. At the end of the summer, I sent videos of college students on their first night in the dorm after being dropped off by their parents. Some were funny; some were definitely poignant. He also sends them back to me — like a kid not knowing how to answer questions at the on-campus medical clinic, with the message, "Me when I get to college."None of this connection would be happening if we didn't communicate through these videos.My hope is that we can continue to stay connected this way. I don't want him to roll his eyes when he sees me calling; I want to be the mom with whom he can still freely share his questions, challenges, and, most especially, what made him laugh today.

In a major step toward protecting students and their families, the Indian government has issued new guidelines aimed at curbing misleading advertisements by coaching centres. The Centre's crackdown addresses exaggerated claims like “100% selection” or “guaranteed job security” — promises that often lead to disappointment among students who invest time and money expecting a near-certain outcome. <h2>Protecting consumers, not shutting down coaching</h2>On Wednesday, the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) rolled out these guidelines in response to numerous complaints from the National Consumer Helpline. According to <keyword id="20003684" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="consumer-affairs" source="keywords">Consumer Affairs</keyword> Secretary Nidhi Khare, the government’s goal is not to shut down coaching centres but to ensure their ads don’t “undermine consumer rights.” “We have seen coaching centres deliberately concealing information from prospective students,” Khare said. “Therefore, we have come out with the guidelines to provide guidance to people involved in the coaching industry.” So far, the CCPA has issued 54 notices to violators and imposed penalties of around Rs 54.60 lakh. <h2>What’s prohibited?</h2>The guidelines lay out strict boundaries on what coaching centres can — and cannot — say in their ads. Here’s what the guidelines address: <ul><li>False Claims: Ads should not make unsubstantiated promises about “100% selection” or “100% job security.”</li><li>Course Details: No exaggerating or omitting information about courses, their duration, or outcomes.</li><li>Faculty Credentials: Qualifications of teachers must be presented accurately, with no fake credentials.</li><li>Fees and Refunds: All fees and refund policies must be transparent.</li><li>Selection Rates and Ranks: Coaching centres cannot claim high selection rates or exam rankings without proof.</li></ul>Additionally, they are not allowed to use successful candidates’ names, photos, or testimonials in ads without written consent from these individuals. Khare advised students to double-check the information provided by coaching centres. “Many UPSC students clear prelims and mains on their own and take only interview guidance from coaching centres,” she explained, encouraging students to verify the course details actually taken by successful candidates. The guidelines go beyond the broad term “coaching.” They define coaching as academic support, education, guidance, study programs, and tuition — but they exclude counselling, sports, and creative activities. The purpose of this definition is to keep the focus on academic and career-oriented programs, which are most prone to misleading ads. <h2>Full disclosure and consequences for violators</h2>Transparency is now mandatory, as coaching centres must display disclaimers and reveal essential course details. Facilities, infrastructure, and resources must be represented accurately, along with any required approvals or recognitions from authorities like AICTE or UGC. Khare, who also serves as the CCPA chief, stressed that coaching centres should accurately present the service, resources, and infrastructure provided. For instance, if they advertise “fully-equipped classrooms,” the guidelines require this to be an honest description. These guidelines come as a supplement to existing laws and are enforceable under the Consumer Protection Act. This means violators will face penalties, potentially similar to the Rs 54.60 lakh already imposed by the CCPA. The government hopes these new standards will push coaching centres to keep their ads honest, helping students and families make better-informed decisions. (With inputs from agencies)

No More False Promises: Government sets rules to prevent misleading and exaggerated coaching centre ads

<ul class="summary-list"><li>The <keyword id="19921999" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Education-Department" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Education Department" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Education Department">Education Department</keyword> said student-loan company MOHELA failed to process <keyword id="23618290" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="borrower-applications" source="keywords">borrower applications</keyword> for <keyword id="23618289" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="income-driven-repayment" source="keywords">income-driven repayment</keyword> plans.</li><li>The department is not assigning new accounts to MOHELA until it corrects its actions.</li></ul>The Education Department notified <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/fire-student-loan-company-mohela-remove-borrowers-from-roster-biden-2024-5">student-loan company MOHELA</a> on Tuesday that it would be facing penalties for failing to perform the servicing obligations required in its contract. According to a document from the Education Department reviewed by Business Insider, MOHELA has failed to process over 460,000 applications for borrowers on income-driven repayment plans, preventing those borrowers from accessing more affordable <keyword id="23618291" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="monthly-payments" source="keywords">monthly payments</keyword>. The department also said Mohela had failed to stop capitalizing interest on borrowers' accounts, incorrectly marked some borrowers for negative credit reporting, and failed to process forgiveness in a timely manner for borrowers who met the threshold. "The Department continues to take swift action in response to errors that cause confusion or unnecessary difficulty for borrowers," Education Secretary Miguel Cardona told BI in a statement. "<keyword id="23618292" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="federal-student-aid" source="keywords">Federal Student Aid</keyword> has determined, through its oversight of federal <keyword id="21652556" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="student-loan" source="keywords">student loan</keyword> servicers, that MOHELA has not consistently met the Department's standards for serving borrowers. MOHELA's continued challenges have resulted in less-than-satisfactory quality of servicing for borrowers." The Education Department requested that MOHELA provide a "corrective action plan" within 10 business days, Cardona said, along with weekly meetings with Federal Student Aid to review the servicer's performance . In the meantime, the department will not assign new borrower accounts to MOHELA until it can demonstrate that it can properly serve borrowers, which could impact the servicer's revenue. A Mohela spokesperson told BI that the servicer "is surprised by FSA's sudden change in direction and communication" after the Education Department recently gave it new borrower accounts. "As one of FSA's critical partners and contractors, MOHELA has and will continue to work closely with FSA," the spokesperson said. Since <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/student-loan-repayment-issues-debt-relief-broken-industry-2023-9">student-loan payments resumed last October</a> after an over three-year pause, MOHELA has been under scrutiny from the Education Department, lawmakers, and advocates over its handling of borrowers' accounts. It was the first servicer to receive a punishment from the department last year — on October 30, 2023, the department <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/student-loan-company-mohela-late-statements-borrowers-biden-withholding-pay-2023-10">withheld $7.2 million in pay from MOHELA</a> over its failure to deliver on-time billing statements to 2.5 million borrowers. This is the second time Mohela has faced changes to the accounts it manages.In April, the Education Department transferred over 1 million borrowers to new servicers to allow for borrowers to have "the best service." This is the second penalty MOHELA has faced this year.In January, the department <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/student-loan-borrowers-missing-billing-statements-servicers-punishment-nelnet-mohela-2024-1">withheld pay from the remaining three major federal servicers</a> over failure to deliver on-time billing statements to borrowers. Still, MOHELA has remained in the spotlight as borrowers have continued to report challenges with the servicer, prompting Sen. Elizabeth Warren to hold a hearing in April over the servicer's performance and later calling for the Education Department to consider terminating the servicer's contract altogether. 'We've organized, we've held hearings, we've done everything possible to hold these student loan servicers accountable for their misconduct," Warren <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/student-loan-borrowers-fire-their-servicer-elizabeth-warren-mohela-navient-2024-9">previously told BI</a>. "And it's beginning to bite. Last year, the department released <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/student-loan-borrowers-bad-customer-service-education-department-oversight-repayment-2023-11">an accountability framework</a> that outlined enforcement actions it would take over servicers who failed to meet their obligations. It's unclear what action the department will take next over MOHELA if it does not correct its actions. Correction: October 18, 2024 — An earlier version of this story misstated one of the Education Department's accusations against Mohela. The department said the company had failed to process forgiveness in a timely manner for borrowers who met the threshold. A major student-loan company is being punished for preventing over 460,000 borrowers from accessing cheaper monthly payments

In a bid to support meritorious and deserving Indian students to pursue their higher education without having to worry about funds, the government today announced the <keyword id="23831216" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="PM-Vidyalaxmi-scheme" source="keywords">PM-Vidyalaxmi scheme</keyword>. Here's all you need to know about it: The scheme will cover students who secure admission to one of the top 860 higher educational institutions in the country. In effect, this is set to benefit over 22 lakh students annually. You can apply for this loan via a soon-to-be launched consolidated PM-Vidyalaxmi portal. The loan application will be entirely digital and will not require collateral or assets to be pledged in place of a loan or even a guarantor. For loans up to Rs 7.5 lakh, the government will provide a 75% credit guarantee. If your family's annual income is up to Rs 8 lakh, you are eligible for receiving loans up to Rs 10 lakh at an interest rate of up to 3% lower rates. This support will be offered to around 1 lakh students every year, and those who opt for technical or professional courses from government-run institutions will be given preference for the same. The government has already set aside Rs 3,600 crore for the same, to be utilized between 2024 and 2031, benefiting 7 lakh students in this period. All eligible students whose family's annual income falls below the Rs 4.5 lakh threshold will receive a full subsidy on interest payable. As for which higher education institutions (HEIs) will qualify, it will depend on recent NIRF (National Institutional Ranking Framework) rankings. This will include: <ul><li>All centrally governed institutions</li><li>Public and private institutions that have made it to NIRF's top 100 rankings in the overall, category, and domain-specific categories</li><li>All state government HEIs that are ranked between 101 and 200 in <keyword id="22759868" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="NIRF-rankings" source="keywords">NIRF rankings</keyword> will also be eligible.</li></ul> <h2>Rising cost of education</h2> Data from NSSO (National Sample Survey Office) highlights that the average expenditure on education in India has doubled in the last decade. Per the All India Survey on Higher Education 2020-21, the tuition fees for engineering courses in most private institutions have already risen by 50% over the past 10 years. Education inflation currently stands high, at about 11–12%. The demand for educational loans is also inching up steadily. Per RBI data, as of September 20, 2024, the total quantum of outstanding education loans stood at Rs 62,389 crore, up 2.8% from Rs 60,715 crore in September 2023. India's largest lender, the State Bank of India, leads the education loan bandwagon, with disbursals worth Rs 10,860 crore in FY24.
