The acquisition by <keyword id="11939413" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="reliance-strategic-business-ventures-ltd" source="Orion">Reliance Strategic Business Ventures Ltd</keyword> (RSBVL) is part of Reliance's digital health intiatives, the firm said in a stock exchange filing. <br /><br /> "RSBVL, a wholly owned subsidiary of <keyword id="6355199" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="reliance-industries" source="Orion">Reliance Industries</keyword> Limited (RIL), has acquired 2.28 crore equity shares of ₹10 each of Strand Life Sciences Private Limited for a cash consideration of Rs 393 crore only," it said. <br /><br /> A further investment of up to ₹160 crore is expected to be completed by March, 2023. <br /><br /> "The total investment will translate into about 80.3 per cent of equity share capital in Strand on a fully diluted basis," it said. <br /><br /> Strand was incorporated in India on October 6, 2000. It is a pioneer of genomic testing in India with bioinformatics software and clinical research solutions to healthcare providers, including clinicians, hospitals, medical devices manufacturers and pharmaceutical companies. <br /><br /> Strand's turnover was ₹88.70 crore, ₹109.84 crore and ₹96.60 crore in FY2021, FY2020 and FY 2019, respectively. Mukesh Ambani's Reliance acquires majority stake in Strand Life Sciences for ₹393 crore

New Delhi, Feb 21 () Consumer healthcare firm Strides Consumer on Friday said it has forayed into North Indian market with oral nicotine replacement therapy and topical analgesic segments.<p> The company currently has strong presence in states like Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha and Assam.</p><p> "We have forayed in the market in North as it is a large market in terms of size and consumers here are quite open to trying new products," Strides Consumer Pvt Ltd CEO Subodh Marwah told .</p><p> The company plans to expand its presence in western region too, he added.</p><p> "The expansion into the new geographic sphere testifies our vision to take our brand and products to every customer in the nation," Marwah said.</p><p> As part of the foray, the company has launched two products -- Nixit, a oral nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) product, and Jointflex, a topical analgesic cream for joint care, Strides Consumer said.</p> Started in 2017, Strides Consumer Pvt Ltd has two marquee investors -- India Life Sciences Fund, which holds around 74 per cent stake in the company, and Strides Pharma Science Ltd with the balance stake of around 26 per cent. Strides Consumer forays into North India market

New Delhi, Feb 7 () Drug firm Procter &amp; Gamble Health on Friday reported a net profit of Rs 38.21 crore for the December quarter.<p> The company had posted a net profit of Rs 715.34 crore for the corresponding period of previous fiscal, Procter &amp; Gamble Health said in a filing to the BSE.</p><p> Revenue from operations stood at Rs 236.76 crore for the quarter under consideration. It was Rs 204.39 crore for the same period year ago.</p><p> The company completed the execution of business transfer agreement with Merck Life Sciences Pvt Ltd to sell, lease, or otherwise transfer certain businesses comprising exclusively of biopharma, performance materials and life sciences segments to the latter on November 30, 2018.</p><p> In a separate filing, the company said its board has approved the re-appointment of Suresh Talwar and Rani Jadhav as independent directors for a period of five years with effect from April 8, 2020, up to March 31, 2025.</p> Shares of Procter &amp; Gamble Health Ltd closed at Rs 4,290 per scrip on the BSE, down 2.47 per cent over previous close. We're all very aware of the symmetry:</p><div><div></div></div><p class="embed-spacer">But there's going to be a huge difference between the two sci-fi movies: "The Martian" is going to be heavy on the <keyword id="41551" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="science">science</keyword> fact, and light on the science fiction.</p><p class="embed-spacer">Weir is a self-described lifetime space nerd, and that becomes obvious just a few pages into "The Martian." The movie adaptation doesn't shy away from the science either.</p><p>"The Martian" is a gritty survivalist tale that follows the story of astronaut Mark Watney after he is stranded on Mars when his crew is forced to leave without him.&#xa0;<span style="line-height: 1.5em;">He's left in a space habitat designed to last for 30 days with no way to contact home. The next crew isn't coming for another four years, but Watney is determined to be alive when they get there.</span></p><p>"I'm going to have to science the shit out of this," Watney says in the trailer. Hell yes he is.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table full"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>That sentiment is already present in the book - it's what keeps the plot moving. Before writing the novel, Weir imagined what a manned mission to Mars would look like, and all the things that could go wrong.</p><p>"So I made one unfortunate protagonist and I subjected him to all of them," Weir said during a talk at the <a href="http://h2m.exploremars.org/" target="_parent">Humans to Mars Summit</a>.</p><p>The story doesn't read as one random disaster after another though. Watney relies on his science background to tackle each problem of being a lone, stranded human on an inhospitable planet - securing food, oxygen, and transportation.</p><p>"To a nerd like me, working out all the math and physics for Mark's problems and solutions was fun," Weir wrote in a Q&amp;A at the end of the book. Retired astronaut Chris Hadfield gave the book a <a href="http://www.andyweirauthor.com/books/the-martian-hc" target="_parent">glowing review:</a> "It has the very rare combination of a good, original story, interestingly real characters and fascinating technical accuracy…reads like 'MacGyver' meets 'Mysterious Island,'" Hadfield wrote.</p><p>NASA is even involved in the film. While the government agency can't support a private enterprise, their experts have consulted on the movie, and production has worked very closely with NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab officials, Weir said. Why 'The Martian' is going to be way better than 'Interstellar' or 'Gravity'

New Delhi, Feb 29 () The national pharmaceutical regulator NPPA has exempted a new coronary stent developed by Meril Life Sciences from price control for five years under a provision of the Drug Price Control Order 2013.<p> The company has got exemption for its product MeRes100TM BRS - Sirolimus eluting bioabsorbable vascular scaffold system from the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA), Meril Life Sciences said in a statement.</p><p> The company said it will start commercial production of the stent in a couple of months.</p><p> After much deliberation, "the Authority decided that exemption may be granted to Meril Life Sciences Pvt Ltd under para 32 (ii) of DPCO 2013 for their coronary stents 'MeRes 100 - Sirolimus eluting bioabsorbable vascular scaffold system' as per the recommendation made by the multidisciplinary committee of experts," the NPPA said in minutes of its meeting.</p><p> The authority also directed the Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) to ensure close safety monitoring of the coronary stents that have been exempted in public interest, as per the minutes of the meeting held on February 25, 2020.</p><p> The government had in 2017 had slashed the prices of life-saving coronary stents by up to 85 per cent.</p><p> Meril Life Sciences Corporate Strategy VP Sanjeev Bhatt told : "The positive decision by NPPA confirming non-applicability of DPCO 2013 under Para 32 for MeRes100 BRS, made post an exhaustive multi-stakeholder review, demonstrates the commitment of the Indian Government to encourage not only 'Make in India', but also Research in India."</p><p> An extensively researched innovation, MeRes100 BRS is backed by three-year efficacy and safety clinical trial data, and has received eight patents worldwide, he added.</p><p> "We are committed to introducing MeRes100 BRS in India and the world responsibly by undertaking a range of measures to ensure effective access and right use, including conducting a 2,000-patient large scale randomized study, building 1,000-patient Indian and global patient registries and ongoing education of interventional cardiologists," Bhatt said.</p> Under para 32 (ii) of the DPCO 2013, the provisions of DPCO 2013 order shall not apply to "a manufacturer producing a new drug in the country by a new process developed through indigenous Research and Development and patented under the Indian Patent Act, 1970 (39 of 1970) (process patent) for a period of five years from the date of the commencement of its commercial production in the country." <p>Amid all the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/atlanta-traffic-jam-pictures-2014-1" target="_blank">snow-related nonsense going down in Atlanta</a>, people are showing immense compassion on a local Facebook group, <a href="https://www.facebook.com/groups/397839673695382/">SnowedOutAtlanta</a>.</p>
<p>Created by Georgia resident <span>Michelle Sollicitio, the group is being by people to post their locations, asking for help for themselves or their loved ones. The most tragic stories involve diabetics, the elderly, and families with young children, especially infants. Some people can't even get in touch with their families. </span></p>
<p><span>Aside from calls for help, offers of assistance are also being publicized. People with large vehicles are selflessly posting their contact information to retrieve those stranded or bring supplies. Members are opening up their homes for shelter. </span></p>
<p><span>The posts are getting shares, tons of likes, and comments offering prayers and hope. The group - at 41,000 members and counting - is getting almost too big to help. </span></p>

<p>"Because many who need help have limited cellphone battery life, please limit posts to those that DIRECTLY HELP those in need. PLEASE DONT POST THANK YOUS and POLITICAL GRUMBLINGS until AFTER the emergency is over - then you can feel free to rant."</p>

Another competitor, Meta, recently announced updates to its <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/meta-ray-bans-have-new-features-smart-glasses-2024-9">Ray-Ban smart glasses</a> and showed off its <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/orion-meta-ar-smart-glasses-review-2024-9">Orion AR glasses</a>, though those may never be made available to the public.</p><p>Emteq is only looking at commercial partners right now, so the emotion-sensing glasses are not available to consumers.</p><p>Strand and Dr. Charles Nduka, the founder and chief science officer at Emteq Labs, told Business Insider that they hope Sense's insights can help people who are struggling with things like mental illness or obesity.</p><p>"With most smart glasses, the sensors are looking out, whereas the data we are gathering is looking at the wearer," Nduka said. "What you can't measure, you can't improve."</p><p>Strand, who wore the Sense glasses during a demonstration for BI, showed how the glasses use contactless sensors to analyze facial data in real time, such as a raise of the eyebrow, a smile, or a frown. That data is analyzed and transferred to the Sense app, and the photo is discarded, Strand said. The goal is to make food logging a passive activity, which can "dramatically increase the compliance" when working toward a goal or abiding by a certain diet, Strand said.</p><p>"For the diet application, we are now closing the loop. We know what you are eating, we know how you are eating, we know your physical activity and your exercise," he said.</p><p>Strand added that he thinks the glasses could also be used for managing neurological conditions, such as autism or Parkinson's.</p><p>"We want to figure out what are the needs that give them a real benefit," Strand said of potential consumers, "and justify wearing the glasses."</p>

The technology modifies this location to optimize its ability to deliver genes to the affected cells and improve its effectiveness.<br /><br />The technology has the ability to improve gene therapy for many hereditary diseases, especially inherited eye diseases. It has shown significant promise in correcting the vision impairment in animal models of blindness.<br /><br /><keyword id="9701732" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="prof-abhay-karandikar" source="Orion">Prof Abhay Karandikar</keyword>, Director of IIT Kanpur, said, "Gene therapy using viral vectors has recently emerged as a potent tool in the field of molecular medicine. We believe that this technology holds great promise for treating a wide range of hereditary eye diseases including Leber congenital amaurosis, an eye disorder that is present from birth; and Retinitis pigmentosa, a disease causing progressive sustained vision loss."<br /><br />Gene therapy is one of the most potent applications of recombinant DNA technology wherein pieces of DNA from multiple sources are combined to efficiently deliver the healthy copy of the faulty gene in a manner that production of protein from the introduced gene is sustained for life.<br /><br />To enable this, the therapeutic DNA molecule is delivered using a virus that can infect human cells. Here's why.</p><p>"The Martian," directed by Ridley Scott, is a gritty survivalist tale that follows the story of astronaut Mark Watney (played by Matt Damon). Watney gets stranded on Mars when his crew is forced to leave him for dead during a major dust storm. When he wakes up, all he has is a space habitat designed to last for only 30 days and no way to contact anyone on Earth.</p><p>The next crew isn't coming to Mars for another four years, but Watney is determined to survive until they arrive.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table full"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>On the surface, "The Martian" may sound a little like "Interstellar" 2.0: a big budget sci-fi movie where Matt Damon gets stranded in space. We're all aware of the symmetry.<p>"Why yes, Matt Damon did play a stranded astronaut in Interstellar," author of "The Martian" Andy Weir tweeted in June. "Thank you, thousands of people, for pointing that out over and over."</p><p class="embed-spacer">But the similarities start and end there. What makes "The Martian" such a brilliant, captivating film is that it has more science fact than science fiction. This may sound counter-intuitive - a nerdy, science-heavy plot is a turnoff for a lot of moviegoers.</p><p class="embed-spacer">Luckily, all the science in the "The Martian" is executed by a charming, hilarious character who makes it feel real and accessible. <strong>That also means no one will feel so intimidated that they miss the point of the story: a celebration of human perseverance and ingenuity</strong>.</p><p class="embed-spacer">Since everything that happens is so realistic, and (mostly) backed up by real science, the movie flows like a highlight reel of some of the most incredible feats the human race is capable of - we really <em>can</em> send humans through 140 million miles of space to Mars, and we really <em>can</em> survive there. <em>Some day</em>.</p><p class="embed-spacer">In short, it's inspiring. And not in a "gee, wouldn't it be cool if we had warp drives or teleportation" kind of way. All of the spacecraft, spacesuits, and rovers in the movie are based on real technologies we already have or that are within reach. So even though we haven't sent humans to Mars yet, this movie is a picture of how we could do it - and how we could do it <em>soon</em>.</p><p class="embed-spacer"></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table full"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><h2 class="embed-spacer">Science fact vs. science fiction</h2><p class="embed-spacer">Director Ridley Scott had wonderful reference material to achieve the movie's potent realism: Weir's book. The author spent an ungodly amount of time researching everything from astronomy to chemistry to orbital physics while writing "The Martian."</p><p class="embed-spacer">He even wrote his own software to calculate the orbital paths he uses for spacecraft in the story.</p><p>"To a nerd like me, working out all the math and physics for Mark's problems and solutions was fun," Weir wrote in a Q&amp;A at the end of the book. "The more I worked on it, the more I realized I had accidentally spent my life researching for this story."</p><p>And the film adaptation keeps most of that intact.</p><p class="embed-spacer">There's a moment in the movie when Mark Watney realizes the gravity of his situation and says "I'm going to have to science the shit out of this." And boy, does he.</p><p>Almost every scene sticks to hard science. It describes how you can make water out of hydrazine rocket fuel without getting into the nitty-gritty chemistry. It references complicated rocket maneuvers, but smartly relies on visuals to explain the crux of them.</p><p>And while it's devoted to scientific realism, the movie does exercise its fiction liberty where it should. For example, communication between Earth and Mars in reality would be on a 20-minute time lag. 'The Martian' is the best space sci-fi movie of my time

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>YouTube/20th Century Fox</span></p><p class="caption">The Pathfinder spacecraft in "The Martian."</p></div><p></p></div></div><strong>Warning: Spoilers ahead if you haven't seen "The Martian" movie or read the book.</strong></p><p>Stranded alone on a freezing planet 140 million miles away from Earth is not a situation you'd want to find yourself in, especially with no way to phone home.</p><p>That is, of course, exactly what happens in the "<a href="http://www.techinsider.io/the-martian-movie-facts-guide-2015-10">The Martian</a>" to fictional astronaut Mark Watney, who understands his survival depends on talking to people back on Earth.</p><p>Luckily, Watney knows his NASA history - so he locates and digs up Mars Pathfinder, a spacecraft NASA actually launched back in 1996. After a little tweaking, he uses the robot to communicate with engineers through a replica of Pathfinder at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory.</p><p><strong>It turns out this plan would probably work in real life because NASA really does have a working replica of Pathfinder. </strong>The spacecraft would need to be "turned on and dusted off," NASA's director of planetary science Jim Green told Tech Insider, but it does exist.</p><p>So NASA really could theoretically use it to communicate with a stranded Martian astronaut. He or she would, however, have to dig Pathfinder out of almost two decades' worth of grit blown around by wind and dust storms, then get it working again.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table full"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mars_Pathfinder#/media/File:Mars_Pathfinder_Lander_preparations.jpg">NASA</a></span></p><p class="caption">The real Pathfinder spacecraft.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>It's not a one-off occurrence: NASA builds a working replica of every spacecraft it launches. That way, in case something goes wrong afterward, engineers can troubleshoot the problem on Earth, come up with a fix, and send a patch to the identical robot in space.</p><p>The Pathfinder replica came in handy, for example, when NASA scientists <a href="http://www.cse.chalmers.se/edu/course/EDA222/Documents/Misc/Report_MarsPathFinder.pdf">discovered a bug</a> in some of the computer code in the real thing, <span>not long after it landed on Mars in 1997.</span> They recreated the problem in the replica, and then worked out a way to debug it. The corrective instructions engineers sent to the Pathfinder on Mars fixed the bug.</p><p>It goes to show that, while NASA scientists and engineers are some of the best in the business, they can't anticipate everything that can go wrong in space. Meet Blackstone's life-science dealmakers

<p>Famous astrophysicist and host of <a href="http://www.startalkradio.net/">StarTalk Radio</a> Neil deGrasse Tyson was surprisingly sassy in his review of the sci-fi epic "The Martian."</p><p>"The Martian" follows the story of astronaut Mark Watney who must rely on science to survive after he gets stranded on Mars. NASA then pulls out all the stops to get him back to Earth alive.</p><p>Most scientists have praised "The Martian" for its attempt at <a href="http://www.techinsider.io/the-martian-reviewed-by-astronauts-scientists-2015-9">scientific accuracy and realism</a>.</p><p>Tyson took the opposite approach. In his first <a href="https://twitter.com/neiltyson?lang=en">tweet</a> about the movie, he pointed out a brilliant reason why we know "The Martian" is science fiction and not a true story:</p><p><div></div></p><p class="embed-spacer">In "The Martian," NASA has a lot of autonomy and scientists are calling all of the shots. This is not always the case in the real world. For example, senator Ted Cruz, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/cruz-wants-nasa-to-quit-worrying-about-climate-change-2015-3">a climate change denier</a>, is the current chairman for the Senate Commerce Subcommittee on Space, Science, and Competitiveness that oversees NASA.</p><p>Tyson's second tweet was another zinger:</p><p><div></div></p><p>In 2011, Congress actually <a href="http://www.forbes.com/sites/williampentland/2011/05/07/congress-bans-scientific-collaboration-with-china-cites-high-espionage-risks/">expressly forbid NASA</a> from working with any Chinese citizen or anyone affiliated with the state. It cited alleged security concerns as the reason.
