Wondering if the markets are closed on October 30th and 31st, 2024, on account of Diwali? Well, here's a ready reckoner for you to figure out when the markets are open and closed this week. Both NSE and BSE will be open and will be functional as usual between 9:15 am and 3:30 pm on Wednesday, October 30, and Thursday, October 31, 2024. On Friday, i.e., November 1, 2024, the NSE and BSE will remain closed on account of Lakshmi Poojan. However, a special, symbolic 1-hour muhurat trading session will take place on this day, between 6 pm and 7 pm. During this time, the markets will open for trading, marking the onset of the new calendar year in Hindu tradition, or Samvat 2081. Traditionally, it is considered auspicious to make new investments during this window since it is believed that they will bring them wealth and prosperity in the long term. The day after, i.e., November 2, is a Saturday, which is a weekly holiday; the markets will be closed. India will celebrate Diwali-Balipratipada on this day. Post Diwali, the stock markets (both BSE and NSE) will have only 2 holidays remaining for the year, namely Gurupurab on November 15, 2024, and Christmas on December 25, 2024. <h2>All you need to know about muhurat trading</h2> Muhurat trading on NSE and BSE will commence between 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. on November 1, 2024. There will be a special pre-open session for stocks of companies taking the IPO route. This will last between 5:45 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Trade settlement will take place on a regular T+1 basis. For investors and traders planning their activities, remember that the markets will be volatile. However, muhurat trading has historically brought about positive returns for investors. For instance, in 2023, muhurat trading during Diwali 2023 yielded returns of about 0.52%. For 2022, this stood at 0.88%. Over the last 10 years, i.e., between 2014 and 2024, Nifty50 has generated negative returns only twice in 2016 (0.14%) and 2017 (0.63%). Says Puneet Sharma, CEO and Fund Manager at Whitespace Alpha, "Muhurat trading is more than just a trading session—it's a ritual of optimism. The one-hour session, steeped in tradition, typically attracts low volumes and less volatility, making it a great opportunity for tactical positioning rather than frenzied trading." Sharma suggests opting for the butterfly trading strategy to get through the muhurat trading session. Think of this strategy as a calculated dance where you’re limiting your risk but still positioning yourself for some upside. "Muhurat trading is not the time for big moves, and that’s where the butterfly spread excels. You’re betting on the market staying within a range, which is typically the case during this session. It’s like planning a party where you already know most guests won’t make a scene," he adds. The butterfly strategy works best in a market that is expected to trade flat, and the security prices won't be very volatile. This setup lets you profit if the market stays stable, which is highly likely during muhurat trading.

Stock market holiday on Diwali: Is the stock market open or closed on the 30th and 31st October?

In a recent notification, the <keyword id="20004725" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="NSE" source="keywords">NSE</keyword> (National Stock Exchange) noted that markets will remain closed on Wednesday, November 20, 2024, on account of state elections taking place in Maharashtra. However, <keyword id="19895774" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="BSE" source="keywords">BSE</keyword> has issued no notification on this matter so far. However, given how both the exchanges largely operate in sync, BSE is likely to declare a holiday as well. Next month, the bourses will remain closed for regular trade on Christmas, i.e., December 25. Earlier this week, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) mandated that all businesses and workplaces in Mumbai should grant paid leave on November 20, 2024, to all its employees so that they can participate in state elections. Failure to do so could mean penalties for employers. All the 288 states in the Maharashtra state assembly are set to go to polls in a single phase on November 20. <h2>Markets close the week on muted note </h2>Both Nifty and Sensex closed the week on a damp note, with Nifty dipping 0.21% to close at 24,148.20 points. On the other hand, Sensex also slipped below the 80,000 mark to close the week at 79,486.32 points. Of the 50 stocks that constitute Nifty, 23 stocks advanced during the day, while 27 saw declines. However, this week has not been all that bad for the markets, with Nifty rising 0.31% and Sensex inching up 0.65% during the last 5 days. All broad market indices fell during today's trade, with smallcaps falling by over 1.5%, while midcaps also closed the day over 1% down. As for sectoral indices, most of them ended the week in reds, with realty and media losing over 2% during trading today. Pharmaceuticals, healthcare, and consumer durables recorded marginal upticks during the day, inching up by 0.07%, 0.22%, and 0.41%, respectively. In this month so far, FIIs have been net cash sellers, offloading around Rs 16,445.49 crore. DIIs (domestic institutional investors) have stepped in to maintain some balance by becoming net buyers worth Rs 12,265.74 crore in November till date. Shrikant Chouhan, Head Equity Research, Kotak Securities, explains that global market sentiment saw sharp volatility in the aftermath of Republicans winning all three branches of the US government, resulting in rising US bond yields and the dollar, as well as the US equity markets beating most EMs. Meanwhile, the Q2 FY25 earnings season continued to remain weak, with more misses than hits observed. <keyword id="20993056" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="FPI-flows" source="keywords">FPI flows</keyword> are expected to remain volatile for some time to come. Markets to remain shut on November 20 due to Maharashtra elections

Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) have been rapidly exiting Indian markets, and this high-speed exodus does not look like it will stop anytime soon. In October 2024, FIIs withdrew Rs 1,14,445.89 crores from Indian markets. Yesterday, FIIs withdrew $770.67 million from the markets, with equity outflows of $440.86 million and debt outflows standing at $327.44 million across various categories. Per NSDL data, hybrid outflows amounted to $2.31 million. While this may sound dissuading at first, a recent SBI report underlined that FIIs still hold a massive $ 18.241 billion in Indian markets. So far, FY25 has seen FII inflows worth $ 8.924 billion. However, the situation may quickly turn alarming as well, given that FII holdings in Indian equities have already come down to a 12-year low. Says Anirudh Garg, Partner and Fund Manager at Invasset PMS, "The current valuation of Indian stocks, trading at around 24 times expected earnings, appears high compared to Chinese stocks, which are at approximately 10 times. Economic concerns, including weak corporate earnings and declining consumer demand, further exacerbate this situation. Additionally, renewed fears of inflation and potential monetary tightening by central banks have led FIIs to withdraw from the Indian market." In the meantime, DIIs (domestic institutional investors) are stepping in big time. During October 2024, DIIs infused Rs 1,07,254.68 crore in Indian markets. In November so far, DIIs have been keeping the fund momentum going, infusing Rs 12,265.74 crore in India, while FIIs have offloaded Rs 16,445.49 crore this month. But despite this strong uptick, SBI's recent report suggests that consumer confidence in India remains below 100, signaling muted positivity and optimism in the economy. While household consumption is gradually recovering, it grew at 4% last year, much below the 7% levels recorded pre-pandemic. <h2>FII share in <keyword id="20868945" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="NSE-listed-companies" source="keywords">NSE-listed companies</keyword> takes a dip, DII stake rise </h2>FIIs share in NSE-listed companies stood at 15.98% in October, with assets under their custody in the equity segment coming to Rs 71.08 lakh crore last month. In September, this stood at Rs 77.96 crore. Experts suggest that this is likely to continue for some time to come. Mutual funds, on the other hand, saw their share in NSE-listed companies hit a record high of 9.58%, as opposed to their 9.32% stake in September 2024. FIIs turned net sellers in the debt segment as well in October, dumping $771 million in Indian markets. This comes after 2 consecutive months of healthy inflows in this segment in August and September 2024, where the figures stood at $2,806 million and $2,295 million, respectively.

Amid the ongoing selling in the Indian stock markets, the growth in the demat accounts also declined in October, highlighted a report by ICICI Securities The report highlighted that after a strong four-month period where monthly additions to demat accounts exceeded 4 million, October 2024 saw a decline in new demat accounts. It also added that the total number of accounts added in October fell to 3.45 million, down from 4.36 million in September 2024. This dip breaks the streak of steady growth in demat accounts, suggesting a possible shift in <keyword id="20030258" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="investor-sentiment" source="keywords">investor sentiment</keyword> or market conditions. "Demat accounts additions fall below 4 million after four months After four consecutive months of more than 4 million <keyword id="23912333" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Demat-account-additions" source="keywords">demat account additions</keyword> in a month," the report said. Among depositories, the Central Depository Services Limited (CDSL) maintained a strong lead in market share. In October 2024, CDSL's share of total and incremental demat accounts stood at 79% and 90%, respectively. Meanwhile, individual investor activity showed mixed trends in September 2024 across different market segments. The report stated that the number of individual investors actively trading in the National Stock Exchange's (NSE) cash market increased slightly. In September, 15.8 million individual investors traded at least once, marking a 1.9% increase from 15.5 million in August. Over the first half of the financial year (6MFY24), a total of 29.4 million individuals participated at least once in the cash market, compared to 30.7 million for the full FY24. However, participation in the equity derivatives segment saw a downturn. The number of individual investors trading at least once in a month on the NSE's equity derivatives segment dropped by 3.6 % in September, falling to 4.46 million from 4.66 million in August. For the first half of FY24, a total of 8.7 million individuals participated in the derivatives market, a decline from 9.6 million for the entire FY24. This decline indicates a reduced interest in derivative trading among individual investors, possibly due to increased volatility or changing market preferences. The report said, "A total of 29.4 million individuals have participated at least once in 6MFY24 vs. 30.7 million in FY24. Individual investors, who traded at least once in a month on NSE's equity derivatives segment, declined 3.6% MoM in Sep'24 to 4.46 million vs. 4.66 million in Aug'24". The dip in both new demat accounts and derivatives participation among individual investors suggests a cautious outlook among retail participants. As global economic conditions remain uncertain, domestic markets face volatility amid the continued selling by foreign investors.

At the interbank forex market, the rupee opened at its historic low of 84.23 against the dollar, down from its previous close of 84.09. On Tuesday, the currency had ended slightly stronger, gaining 2 paise. Meanwhile, the dollar index, which tracks the strength of the US dollar against six major currencies, climbed 1.64% to 105.11. According to Anil Kumar Bhansali, Head of Treasury at Finrex Treasury Advisors, the index rose following initial election results showing former President Trump ahead, with the Republican party also leading in both the Senate and the House of Representatives. The global oil market saw movement as Brent crude prices dipped 0.98%, trading at USD 74.79 per barrel. Bhansali noted that the rupee’s trajectory will heavily depend on the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) response, particularly as the currency fluctuates with real-time election outcomes. He estimated an intra-day trading range between 84.00 and 84.35. On the domestic front, Indian stock markets showed positive trends. The Sensex climbed by 390.93 points (0.49%) to reach 79,867.56, while the Nifty rose by 135.60 points (0.56%) to 24,348.90. Despite these gains, foreign institutional investors (FIIs) were net sellers on Tuesday, pulling out Rs 2,569.41 crore from the capital markets, as per stock exchange data. The stock of the group's flagship firm Adani Enterprises plunged 22.99%, Adani Ports dived 20%, Adani Energy Solutions tanked 20%, Adani Green Energy plummeted 19.53% and Adani Total Gas tumbled 18.14% on the BSE. Shares of Adani Power slumped 17.79%, Ambuja Cements cracked 17.59%, ACC fell 14.54%, NDTV dropped 14.37% and Adani Wilmar declined 10%. Some of the group firms also hit their lowest trading permissible limit or lower circuit for the day. The combined market capitalisation (mcap) of all the ten listed group firms eroded by ₹2,45,016.51 crore during the morning deals. US prosecutors charged Adani, 62, his nephew Sagar and other defendants for paying over $250 million in bribes between 2020 and 2024 to Indian government officials to win solar energy contracts on terms that could potentially bring in more than $2 billion in profit. Starting November 11, 2024, your shares will be directly credited to your demat account after you've executed a trade. This will significantly reduce the role of your stockbrokers like Zerodha, Groww, Angel One, and more. Earlier, this rule was set to take effect yesterday i.e. October 14, 2024. The timelines were pushed to November 11 post multiple representations from Broker's Forum. Even the payout time has been shifted from 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm, in order to ensure credit to client's accounts the very same day. So, what does this change entail for you? We take a look. <h2>What was the situation before? </h2>Say you placed an order to buy 1,000 shares of company A through your stockbroker online today i.e. on Monday. The This will be your trade day, or T-day. The total transaction is worth Rs 1,00,000 (1,000 shares of Rs 100 each), plus Rs 120 worth of STT, brokerage charges and more, which brings the total to Rs 1,00,120. First, your broker will ascertain whether or not you have this amount, or sufficient funds in your account for the trade to go through. Once that is verified, your broker will block this amount in your account and send you a contract note. This note details the day's transactions, along with the charges levied by the broker. Since Indian markets operate on a T-day+1 settlement basis, here's what will happen with your order on T+1 day i.e. Tuesday: 1. The shares will be credited to your broker's pool account (Zerodha in this case) by the clearing corporation (CC). Also, the shares will start reflecting in your demat account the very same day. 2. The funds, which had been blocked in your account, will be debited from your broker's pool account, and will be credited to the selling broker's pool account. Before today, the CC first transferred the <keyword id="20148181" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="securities" source="keywords">securities</keyword> into your broker's pool account, who then credited them to your account. The shares remained in the custody and control of your broker, before they finally transferred the same to your account. <h2>What's changing?</h2>From November 11, 2024, the CC will directly credit the securities to your demat account, eliminating the role of the broker as a necessary intermediary. In short, the brokers will have no touchpoint with your shares. This change will be implemented in 2 phases: Phase 1, which was set to start on October 14, will enable <keyword id="23504881" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="direct-credit" source="keywords">direct credit</keyword> of securities for equity cash segments, where big financial organizations or brokers undertake trades on behalf of their individual or institutional investors. This will also be applicable for physical settlements of futures and options. This means that on the date of their expiry, the actual delivery of stocks/commodities must be made to your demat account. This will continue till January 13, 2025. However, in certain cases, like short delivery (when sellers do not deliver shares), rejected payouts, inactive buyer accounts and more, the securities will still be first credited to the broker's pool accounts. Phase 2, which will begin from January 14, 2025, will extend this system to all security transactions, including even for SLB (securities lending and borrowing), where investors can lend or borrow securities from other participants in the market. The role of brokers will be largely be minimised. This will also change how pledges, or loan against securities are created. Currently, brokers are tasked with the job of creating pledges for unpaid securities, and marking them in the client's demat account. But post this change, brokers will request CCs to mark this in the client's demat account. <h2>Is there anything I need to do? </h2>No, this is not set to impact your i.e. the investor's experience in any way. If anything, it will make the entire share credit process smoother, more direct and secure.

Indian stock markets wobble as uncertainty builds around the U.S. election this week. What should investors do?

New Delhi [India], July 17 (ANI): <keyword id="20459350" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-stock-markets" source="keywords">Indian stock markets</keyword> are closed today in observance of the <keyword id="22440102" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Muharram-holiday" source="keywords">Muharram holiday</keyword>, with <keyword id="20114014" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="trading" source="keywords">trading</keyword> set to resume on Thursday. In other <keyword id="35189" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Asian-markets" source="Orion">Asian markets</keyword>, Japan's Nikkei 225 experienced a modest increase, gaining 40 points to reach 41,310.70. Meanwhile, Hong Kong's Hang Seng rose by 9 points to 17,737.27. Taiwan's Taiwan Weighted index declined by 56 points to 23,940.87. Chinese markets also faced selling pressure, with the Shanghai Composite dropping 13 points to 2,963.89 at the time of filing this report. On Tuesday, Indian stock indices Sensex and Nifty closed at fresh record highs. The Sensex settled at 80,716.55 points, up 0.1%, while the Nifty settled at 24,613.00 points, also up 0.1%. While broader indices closed marginally higher, most sectoral indices settled in the red. Nifty Media declined the most, down 1.03%, while Nifty Realty rose the most, up 1.66%, according to NSE data. The past week saw Indian stock markets touching fresh all-time highs. The upward movement in the market was triggered by the latest moderation in US inflation, better-than-expected results in the IT sector, and the absence of negative market fundamentals. Sensex and Nifty have cumulatively gained 11-13% so far in 2024-25. Strong buying by both foreign and domestic institutional investors has also supported the stock markets. "Technically, after an early morning intraday rally, the market witnessed some profit booking on Tuesday at higher levels. However, the short-term texture of the market is still positive," said Shrikant Chouhan, Head of Equity Research at Kotak Securities.

Bloodbath on the D-Street entered its fifth straight day today, with <keyword id="19896381" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nifty" source="keywords">Nifty</keyword> dipping by 218 points to close the day at 24,180.80, much below the 25,000-mark. <keyword id="19896382" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sensex" source="keywords">Sensex</keyword> also dropped a massive 662 points to close the week at 79,402.29 points. Notably, this was the worst weekly run experienced by the markets over the last 14 months. Clearly, the markets are not in the mood to embrace the impending festivities. Only 12 out of 50 stocks on the Nifty50 advanced today, while the other 38 declined. It was no different on the BSE, where an astounding 3,101 stocks slipped during the day, while just 841 inched up. Smallcaps bore the biggest brunt of this drawdown, with the smallcap 100, 50, 250, and microcaps each sliding by over 2% during the day. Amidst sectors, media, metal, PSU banks, consumer durables, and oil and gas skidded over 2% each today. Gaurav Garg, Research Analyst at Lemonn Markets Desk, explains that on a weekly basis, benchmarks had recorded five consecutive daily losses. Markets appear oversold, with RSI (Relative Strength Index) falling to 27 levels, its lowest in more than a year. Persistent foreign outflows with a record ~97000 crores so far in October, along with disappointing <keyword id="23378466" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Q2-earnings" source="keywords">Q2 earnings</keyword>, have led to sharp valuation corrections in stocks with high multiples as investors adjust their expectations for future growth. Per media reports, investors saw their wealth diminish by a massive Rs 6.80 lakh crore today, largely due to a sharp, 18% dip in the shares of <keyword id="19901053" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="IndusInd-Bank" source="keywords">IndusInd Bank</keyword> and uncontrolled exodus of <keyword id="19900795" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="foreign-investors" source="keywords">foreign investors</keyword>. Reportedly, IndusInd Bank reported a 40% decline in its net profits for the quarter ended September 30, 2024. "Another major factor contributing to this dip is disappointing earnings reports from Indian companies, especially in the consumption sector, which signal an economic slowdown, particularly in urban consumption," Santosh Meena, Head of Research at Swastika Investmart, said. Mahindra &amp; Mahindra, Larsen &amp; Toubro, NTPC, Adani Ports, Tata Steel, Maruti, Bajaj Finance and Titan were also among the laggards. "Markets continued its downward trajectory as a broader selloff pulled down key benchmarks with Sensex ending below the crucial 80k mark. The dismal Q2 earnings so far has aggravated the investors' woes while persistent <keyword id="21360658" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="FII-selling" source="keywords">FII selling</keyword> continued to create havoc in the market," said Prashanth Tapse, Senior VP (Research), Mehta Equities Ltd. On October 24, 2024, i.e. yesterday, foreign investors offloaded a massive Rs 5,062.45 worth of equities, while domestic investors remained net buyers, purchasing around Rs 3,620.47 crore worth of shares. Thus far in October, foreign investors have pulled out a record Rs 97,205.42 crore from Indian markets. Shrikant Chouhan, Head Equity Research, Kotak Securities expects that the "market sentiment will continue to be weighed down by weaker-than-expected Q2FY25 earnings prints and continued weak commentary. FPI flows are expected to remain volatile in the days to come". "Indian equity markets corrected sharply this week as FII continued with selling in Indian markets. Benchmark indices (Nifty 50 and Sensex 30) declined between 2-3% this week. The midcap and the <keyword id="20187540" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="smallcap-stocks" source="keywords">smallcap stocks</keyword> witnessed selling pressure. As a result, the BSE Midcap and the BSE Smallcap indices underperformed the larger peers and were down between 5-8% on a weekly basis. All the sectoral indices ended the week in the red with multiple indices seeing a weekly fall in excess of 6%", added Chouhan Per Chouhan, in the coming weeks, key events that will determine the market's course of action include the US elections and the US FOMC meet. Stock specific action will continue based on Q2FY25 financial performance and management commentary. Garg also anticipates that in the near term, the markets will trade rangebound. Market veteran Raamdeo Agrawal, who heads Motilal Oswal Financial Services, called the ongoing <keyword id="22528556" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="market-downturn" source="keywords">market downturn</keyword> the "healthiest possible correction".

Massacre continues on Sensex and Nifty as foreign investors withdraw Rs 97,205.42 crore in October

New Delhi: <keyword id="19900795" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="foreign-investors" source="keywords">Foreign investors</keyword> pulled out a massive Rs 94,000 crore (around USD 11.2 billion) from the Indian <keyword id="19925636" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="stock-market" source="keywords">stock market</keyword> in October, making it the worst-ever month in terms of outflows, triggered by the elevated valuation of domestic equities and attractive valuations of <keyword id="20295104" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Chinese-stocks" source="keywords">Chinese stocks</keyword>. Before this, foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) withdrew Rs 61,973 crore from equities in March 2020. The latest outflow came after a nine-month high investment of Rs 57,724 crore in September 2024. Since June, FPIs have consistently bought equities after withdrawing Rs 34,252 crore in April-May. Overall, FPIs have been net buyers in 2024, except for January, April and May, data with the depositories showed. Looking ahead, the trajectory of global events like geopolitical developments, interest rate movements, progress in the Chinese economy and the outcome of the US Presidential election will play a crucial role in shaping future foreign investment in <keyword id="20014814" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-equities" source="keywords">Indian equities</keyword>, Himanshu Srivastava, Associate Director, Manager Research, Morningstar Investment Research India, said. On the domestic front, key indicators like inflation trajectory, corporate earnings, and the impact of festive season demand will also be closely watched by FPIs as they assess opportunities in the Indian market, he added. According to the data, FPIs recorded a net outflow of Rs 94,017 crore in October. The intensity of net outflows could be gauged from the fact that except for one day, FPIs were net sellers throughout the month, bringing their total investment for 2024 down to Rs 6,593 crore. This relentless selling resulted in about an 8 per cent decline in benchmark indices from their peaks. Several factors contributed towards this massive withdrawal of foreign capital from the Indian equity markets in October. The major among them is the elevated valuations of Indian equities. This has triggered a shift in investments towards China, where valuations are currently more attractive. Additionally, a series of stimulus measures, aimed at bolstering Chinese economic growth has made Chinese equities increasingly appealing to global investors, Srivastava said. Despite the massive FPI selling in financials, this sector is resilient since the valuations are fair and every selling is being absorbed by DIIs and individual investors, particularly HNIs, VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist, Geojit Financial Services, said. In addition, FPIs pulled out Rs 4,406 crore from the debt general limit and invested Rs 100 crore from the debt Voluntary Retention Route (VRR) during the period under review. So far this year, FPIs invested Rs 1.06 lakh crore in the debt market.
