The Indian cement industry is on track to reach 5.09 billion tonnes by 2028-29, driven by robust government investment in infrastructure. According to an IANS report originally attributed to Infomerics Ratings, this marks a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4.9 per cent between 2024 and 2029. In 2022-23, the industry’s market size stood at 3.82 billion tonnes, with a total installed capacity of 622 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) in FY24 and production at 427 million tonnes. Notably, India contributes over 8 per cent to the world’s total installed cement capacity, highlighting its importance in the global market. Despite this, India’s per capita cement consumption is 260 kg—significantly below the global average of 540 kg—indicating substantial room for growth. Globally, the cement market is projected to grow at a CAGR of 4.3 per cent from 2024 to 2032. The sector’s expansion is fuelled by ambitious government initiatives, including an allocation of ₹11.11 lakh crore for infrastructure in FY25 and housing schemes like Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana. The construction sector consumes 55 per cent of cement production, while public infrastructure projects account for the remainder. The industry also plays a critical role in employment, providing direct jobs to over one million people and creating downstream opportunities for about 20,000 individuals per million tonnes of cement produced. Private players dominate the sector, controlling 98 per cent of production capacity, while public sector units hold a mere 2 per cent. Domestic production meets almost all demand, with imports accounting for just 0.2 per cent of total production in FY23. However, exports have declined recently due to reduced global demand and rising competition. India currently has 341 cement manufacturing facilities, including 159 integrated large cement plants, 120 grinding units, and 62 mini cement plants. Cement production has seen steady growth, with a 7.1 per cent increase in September 2024 and a cumulative growth of 1.6 per cent between April and September of FY25, according to the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. This growth aligns with India’s overall industrial performance, which saw a 2 per cent rise in core industries in September, led by cement, steel, coal, and fertilisers. Last week, the President of the United States, <keyword id="19919748" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="joe-biden" source="keywords">Joe Biden</keyword>, announced significant tariffs on a range of <keyword id="20139085" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Chinese-products" source="keywords">Chinese products</keyword> to protect American workers from unfair trade practices. The targetted measures include a 100% tariff on <keyword id="6354973" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="electric-vehicles" source="Orion">electric vehicles</keyword>, a 50% tariff on semiconductors and solar cells, and a 25% tariffs on batteries, steel and aluminium products, some critical minerals, and essential health equipment like medical gloves, syringes and needles. In his address from the Rose Garden of the White House, Biden said America can continue to buy any kind of car they want, "but we're never going to allow China to unfairly control the market for these cars. Period." He claimed that the Chinese government has been investing state funds in various Chinese companies for years, spanning industries across the above-mentioned sectors. How does this brewing geopolitical <keyword id="20736760" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="trade-war" source="keywords">trade war</keyword> impact <keyword id="20742235" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-firms" source="keywords">Indian firms</keyword>? Experts say the impact could be in two ways, benefitting some sectors, while harming the few others. Let’s start with the bad news. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Threat to Indian firms" comment="subhead" text="Threat to Indian firms">Threat to Indian firms</cmsannotation> Beijing offers significant subsidies on most of these products, leading to surplus production that exceeds domestic and even regular export demand. Subsequently, Chinese companies are known to flood the global markets with surplus products at unreasonably low prices, forcing local manufacturers out of business in many countries, including <keyword id="19895063" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="India" source="keywords">India</keyword>. A prime example of this in practice can be found in the steel sector, where weak domestic demand is pushing the world’s largest steel producer China to offload surplus production into Indian markets at cheaper prices. Indian steel manufacturers are already struggling to compete with a glut of cheaper Chinese steel, with shipments nearly doubling year-on-year in the financial year ending March 2024. “India is already under grave threat of import because all major steel consuming economies are shutting their doors on these steel producing countries. We are highly vulnerable to surging and predatory import,” said Alok Sahay, secretary general of the Indian Steel Association, to Reuters. Global trade experts say that a majority of Chinese products are sold at unreasonably low prices in global markets because the companies in these sectors do not have to worry about profits. They are heavily subsidised by the Chinese government. <keyword id="20279291" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Steel-Authority-of-India" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Steel Authority of India" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Steel Authority of India">Steel Authority of India</keyword>’s (SAIL) chairman Amarendu Prakash also said that they are keenly watching Chinese imports after the US tariff increases. Additionally, China has been accused of employing anti-competitive strategies like compelling foreign companies to transfer their technology in order to operate in China. These factors have led to the US effectively shutting its door on several Chinese products through heightened tariffs, and other developed markets like Canada are also likely to follow suit. White House also emphasised that it continues to consult with its partners and allies who are facing similar threats from China’s unfair trade practices and are keen on taking action. If more and more global markets restrict entry of Chinese products, the risk of the majority of such products being dumped in neighbouring India increases drastically. Trying to block Chinese excess production "is like squeezing a balloon. It shrinks in one place and pops out in another," William Reinsch, a trade expert at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, tells Reuters. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="An opportunity also arises" comment="subhead" text="An opportunity also arises">An opportunity also arises</cmsannotation> While some products risk being dumped into the Indian market, in a few other cases, Indian firms could benefit from fresh openings in the lucrative US market. "Of the products affected, India has opportunities in face masks, PPE, syringes &amp;needles, medical gloves, aluminium, iron, and steel. Opportunity may come in China also with retaliation, provided we have market access in products targeted by China," Ajay Sahai, Director General of the Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO), told ANI. However, China is not likely to retaliate against the US tariffs at the moment, say experts, though the country’s Ministry of Commerce said it would take 'resolute measures to safeguard its own rights and interests' "China's economy is fragile. With household spending and the property market on the wane, manufacturing for export markets is one of its few bright spots. Beijing will not want to cut off its nose to spite its face. More broadly, China is desperately trying to encourage new foreign investment. Rash retaliatory action could spoil its case," Moody's Analytics explained in a recent report. Out of China's USD 420 billion exports to the US, only USD 18 billion is impacted due to the latest hike in tariffs — representing slightly over 4% and therefore considered marginal. But Sahai says that this market will continue to grow with time and provides an opportunity to India and other competitors to chip in the supply gap. Ajay Srivastava, the founder of the Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI), also echoes Sahai’s opinions. He emphasised that the increased duties on Chinese face masks, syringes, needles, medical gloves, and natural graphite offer a substantial opportunity for India, as quoted by ANI. "By ramping up production and export of these in-demand products, India could enhance its trade footprint in the US market," he added. In terms of products like electric vehicles and semiconductors, India remains a net importer, and therefore, may not be in a position to capitalise right now. In the long term, however, as India begins semiconductor production at scale in 2025, there will be opportunities to export some of it to the US and other European countries, offering fresh impetus for domestic manufacturing. As the security risks associated with importing Chinese semiconductors prompts more and more trade barriers from the Western countries, demand for supply from India is likely to grow. Efforts are already underway for the establishment of four large semiconductor plants in India, with three located in Gujarat and one in Assam. Last fiscal year, Indian exports to the US dipped marginally by 1.32 per cent to $77.5 billion as against $78.54 billion in 2022-23. The new development now gives an unique opportunity to turn the tide over the next few years. Overall, some sectors like steel and aluminium do face a serious challenge due to the fresh US tariffs on Chinese products. "By taking immediate action, our government is showing that this type of shameless behavior will never be tolerated."Goncalves stressed his belief that the steel mills should remain American-owned and operated — a stance that Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump have echoed on the campaign trail.US Steel has maintained that the sale to Nippon would not affect national security. <keyword id="19896016" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="new-delhi" source="keywords">New Delhi</keyword>, The growth of eight key infrastructure sectors slowed to a 15-month low of 3.6 per cent in January, on account of poor performance of sectors like <keyword id="819180" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="refinery-products" source="Orion">refinery products</keyword>, <keyword id="50549" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="fertiliser" source="Orion">fertiliser</keyword>, <keyword id="34570" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="steel" source="Orion">steel</keyword> and <keyword id="44578" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="electricity" source="Orion">electricity</keyword>, according to the official data released on Thursday. The growth of eight core sectors -- coal, crude oil, natural gas, refinery products, fertiliser, steel, cement and electricity -- was 4.9 per cent in December. It was 9.7 per cent in January 2023. The previous low level of growth rate was recorded at 0.9 per cent in October 2022. Cumulatively also, the growth rate in the output of these sectors slowed down to 7.7 per cent as against 8.3 per cent in April-January 2022-23. The output growth of refinery products and fertiliser was in the negative zone. And the pace of increase in the output of coal, steel, and electricity decelerated during the month under review. However, crude oil, natural gas, and cement production recorded positive growth in January. The eight core sectors contribute 40.27 per cent to the country's Index of Industrial Production (IIP).

Key infra sectors' growth slows to 15-month low of 3.6% in January

New Delhi, India has registered a 4.1 per cent growth in its crude <keyword id="113521" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="steel-production" source="Orion">steel production</keyword> at 11.2 MT amid 5.1 per cent downfall in the global output at 161.6 MT in May 2023, according to the World <keyword id="34570" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="steel" source="Orion">Steel</keyword> Association (worldsteel). Despite a 7.3 per year-on-year (y-o-y) fall, China remained the top steel producing country in May with 90.1 MT crude steel production, worldsteel data showed. India produced 11.2 MT crude steel, up 4.1 per cent over May 2022, the body said in its latest report. Japan's output was also 5.2 per cent down y-o-y at 7.6 MT. The United States produced 6.9 MT steel registering a 2.3 per cent fall annually. Russia is estimated to have produced 6.8 MT, up 8.8 per cent. South Korea registered a marginal fall of 0.1 per cent to 5.8 MT. While Germany produced 3.2 MT, Brazil 2.8 MT, Turkiye 2.9 MT and Iran produced 3.3 MT in May 2023. Brussels-based World Steel Association is one of the largest industry associations in the world, with members in every major steel-producing country. It represents steel producers, national and regional steel industry associations, and steel research institutes. Members represent around 85 per cent of <keyword id="279841" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="global-steel" source="Orion">global steel</keyword> production.

Global steel production falls 5.1% in and India's output rises 4.1% in May 2023

Coal India Limited (<keyword id="19983407" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="CIL" source="keywords">CIL</keyword>) achieved an 8 per cent <keyword id="19910261" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="growth" source="keywords">growth</keyword> in <keyword id="19922489" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="coal-production" source="keywords">coal production</keyword>, reaching 189.3 million <keyword id="22246379" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tonnes" source="keywords">tonnes</keyword> in the first quarter of the current fiscal, surpassing its target of 189.2 million tonnes, the company said in a statement on Monday. The company's production increased by 13.8 million tonnes compared to the corresponding quarter of FY'24, with all seven producing subsidiaries registering positive growth, it said. CIL's supplies also rose by 6 per cent to 198.4 million tonnes during April-June 2024, with a significant increase in supplies to both power and non-power sectors, it added. The company's coal loading witnessed healthy growth, with an average of 367.2 rakes per day, a 10.3 per cent year-on-year increase, it said. Higher production and loading resulted in a substantial increase in coal inventory at CIL's pitheads, reaching 81.5 million tonnes, providing a sufficient buffer to meet any sudden surge in demand, it said. At a time when power demand in the country is surging, the miner stepped up its supplies to coal-fired plants, registering a 4 per cent growth to 160 million tonnes in <keyword id="20501879" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Q1" source="keywords">Q1</keyword> FY'25, a year-on-year increase of 6 million tonnes. In the same period of FY 2024, CIL's off-take to thermal power plants stood at 154 million tonnes, the company said. Additionally, CIL's supplies to the non-power sector reached an all-time high of 38.4 million tonnes in Q1FY25, logging a 16 per cent growth. This sector had received 33 million tonnes in April-June 2023. The growth in June 2024 alone was 23 per cent at 13.4 million tonnes, the statement said. Coal India's Q1 production surges 8% to 189.3 million tonne in FY'25

Ranchi, <keyword id="6357147" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="tata-steel" source="Orion">Tata Steel</keyword> sees enough growth opportunities within its existing facilities to actualise an expansion plan to achieve 40 million tonne capacity in <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword> by 2030, almost double of its current capability in the country, CEO and Managing Director <keyword id="1441007" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="t-v-narendran" source="Orion">T V Narendran</keyword> said. The steel giant will continue to hold talks with the UK government over a financial package for operations there, he said. The company has planned capital expenditure to the tune of Rs 12,000 crore for India operations, he said. "In India, basically we want to increase the capacity. We have already around 21 MT. It will be 25 MT soon because the Kalinganagar expansion is going on. We have a few more plans - Neelachal, Kalinganagar and Meramandali or Angul to achieve 40 million tonne capacity by 2030," <keyword id="347545" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="narendran" source="Orion">Narendran</keyword> told PTI in an interview here. There are multiple ongoing projects at various locations in India and the company has "prioritised completion of the 5 MTPA Kalinganagar expansion", he said. The company is in the process of expanding its plant capacity in Odisha's Kalinganagar to 8 MT from 3 MT. "Within nine months of acquisition, we have successfully ramped up (the capacity of) Neelachal Ispat Nigam Ltd to one million tonne on annualised basis," he said. The steel company, through its wholly-owned subsidiary <keyword id="13070787" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="tata-steel-long-products-ltd" source="Orion">Tata Steel Long Products Ltd</keyword>, had completed the acquisition of Odisha-based one million tonne per annum steel mill NINL for a consideration of Rs 12,100 crore in July 2022. On capacity expansion, he said, "Basically the capex (capital expenditure) which you see is Rs 12,000 crore in India. It will be at that level for the next three years at least." In reply to a query, he categorically said that the entire growth plan is based on "organic" expansion, and there is no plan for any "inorganic" growth in the near future. "Within our facilities, we have enough opportunities. We don't need to acquire anything to achieve our growth aspiration," he said. Speaking on the steel major's UK operations, he said there was "status quo" but the company will continue to pursue talks. "On UK operations, there is no further development. We had conversations a couple of months back. They had given us an offer which is below or lower than what we had sought. After that, there is no further development. We will continue to have conversations with them," Narendran said. Tata Steel has sought a financial package of 1.5 billion pounds from the UK government to execute decarbonisation plans at its Port Talbot facility in South Wales under which it will install new plant machinery with low-emission technologies for replacing two blast furnaces, which are nearing the end of life in 12-24 months, and bringing down the carbon footprint. Asked about the future course on projects there, he said it would depend on the outcomes of the dialogue and the financial support from the UK government. The steel major owns a 5-MT facility at Port Talbot, which is the UK's largest steelworks employing around 8,000 people. "Our route and pace of decarbonisation across geographies will be calibrated for each location based on the local regulatory framework, government support and willingness of customers to pay for higher-cost green steel," he said.
