So, for a 2,000 calorie diet that's equivalent to about 250 grams of carbs per day. (This is the CDC recommendation for those with diabetes but it's a good guideline for controlling prediabetes, too.)</li><li><strong>Limit added sugars</strong>, like what you find in non-diet soda and many processed foods (baked good, salad dressings, bottled marinades), to <a href="https://www.heart.org/en/healthy-living/healthy-eating/eat-smart/sugar/how-much-sugar-is-too-much" target="_blank" rel="noopener">no more than 36 grams</a> (9 tsp) per day for men and 25 grams (6 tsp) per day for women. Your doctor may want you to limit it to even less depending on the severity of your condition.</li><li><strong>Consume healthy complex carbs</strong> from sources like whole grains, fruit, beans, and vegetables that contain fiber and therefore take longer to digest, thereby helping maintain steady blood sugar.</li><li><strong>Pair carbohydrates with fat and protein</strong> to also help slow digestion and <a href="https://www.joslin.org/patient-care/diabetes-education/diabetes-learning-center/carbs-protein-and-fats-their-effect" target="_blank" rel="noopener">prevent blood sugar spikes</a>.</li></ul><p>With that in mind, here's a week-long meal plan to get you started. This means that your body no longer responds properly to insulin, a hormone that helps your cells use blood sugar for energy. As a result, your pancreas starts producing more insulin to get cells to respond, eventually leading to a rise in blood sugar. </p><p>Ultra-processed foods are <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/32735599/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">associated with insulin resistance</a> and diabetes, in part because foods that are high in carbohydrates but low in fiber and protein can <a href="https://www.hsph.harvard.edu/nutritionsource/carbohydrates/carbohydrates-and-blood-sugar/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">spike blood sugar levels</a> and put extra stress on the pancreas. But it's not just these <a href="https://www.insider.com/what-are-carbs" target="_blank" rel="noopener">simple carbs</a> to blame.</p><p>Some processed foods high in saturated fat have been <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/26615402/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">linked to increased insulin resistance</a>, and sodium has been linked to a <a href="https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2017/09/170914210621.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">higher risk of developing diabetes</a>. </p><p>It's also worth noting that consuming ultra-processed foods is associated with a <a href="https://www.clinicalnutritionjournal.com/article/S0261-5614(21)00389-7/fulltext" target="_blank" rel="noopener">higher risk of weight gain and obesity</a> — one of the <a href="https://medlineplus.gov/prediabetes.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">leading risk factors</a> for prediabetes.</p><p>With that in mind, here are some foods that Chan and Hunnes advise avoiding while on a prediabetic diet:</p><ul><li>Refined grains, like <a href="https://www.insider.com/wheat-bread-vs-white-bread" target="_blank" rel="noopener">white bread</a>, <a href="https://www.insider.com/is-pasta-healthy" target="_blank" rel="noopener">pasta</a>, and <a href="https://www.insider.com/is-white-rice-bad-for-you" target="_blank" rel="noopener">rice</a>, as well as packaged cookies, crackers, and pastries made with white flour</li><li>Processed meats, like pepperoni, sausage, bacon, hot dogs, salami, and beef jerky</li><li>Sugar-sweetened breakfast cereals </li><li>Sugar-sweetened beverages, like soda, fruit juice, iced tea, and sports drinks</li><li>Alcoholic beverages, especially sugary cocktails</li><li>Sugar-sweetened jams, jellies, and yogurts</li><li>Energy bars, granola bars, and snack bars with added sugar</li><li>Salty snacks, like potato chips and pretzels</li><li>Candy</li></ul><h2><strong>Best diets for prediabetes</strong></h2><p>A <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC9002735/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">2022 review</a> found that eating more plant-based foods and fewer animal foods can result in lower <a href="https://www.insider.com/insulin-resistance" target="_blank" rel="noopener">insulin resistance</a> and a lower risk of prediabetes and type 2 diabetes. </p><p>Both the <a href="https://www.insider.com/mediterranean-diet" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Mediterranean</a> and <a href="https://www.insider.com/dash-diet" target="_blank" rel="noopener">DASH diets</a> emphasize fiber-packed, plant-based foods like vegetables, legumes, whole grains, nuts, olive oil, and seeds and therefore are a great guideline for your prediabetes diet, Hunnes says.</p><p>Moreover, a <a href="https://bmjopen.bmj.com/content/5/8/e008222" target="_blank" rel="noopener">2014 review</a> found that higher adherence to the Mediterranean diet can reduce the risk of future diabetes by 19% to 23%.</p><p>Another <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/24744219/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">2014 review</a> found that following the DASH diet is associated with a 20% reduced risk of future type 2 diabetes.</p><h2>Foods to eat in moderation</h2><p>While Chan notes that the bulk of your calories should come from whole foods like vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts, and lean proteins, you can still allow yourself an occasional treat.</p><p>Below are some examples of healthy treats you can occasionally enjoy on a prediabetic diet, according to Chan:</p><ul><li>Strawberries or cherries with dark chocolate (70% cocoa content or higher)</li><li>Black bean brownies </li><li>Homemade granola made with nuts, seeds, and dried fruit</li><li>Arrowroot cookies or cookies made with almond flour</li><li>Baked apple topped with cinnamon and vanilla Greek yogurt</li><li>One-ingredient "ice cream" made with blended frozen banana and topped with chopped nuts</li><li>Frozen yogurt with mixed berries and shredded coconut</li></ul><p>As for how often you can enjoy these treats — your doctor or dietitian can help guide you, but as a general rule, try to limit your daily calories from sugar to about 5%. So for a 2,000 calorie diet, that would equate to 25 grams of sugar.</p><h2>Other tips</h2><p>Here are some other tips to keep in mind while transitioning to a prediabetic diet:</p><ul><li><strong>Make sustainable changes: </strong>There's no sense in making drastic modifications to your diet that you know you can't stick with long-term, says Chan. For example, rather than adopting a fad diet like keto or Atkins that drastically limits carbs, consider simply trying to swap out refined carbohydrates for whole-grain alternatives.</li></ul><ul><li><strong>Don't eat sugar on its own: </strong>When your sweet tooth strikes, Hunnes advises making it a point to pair sugary foods with fat, fiber, or protein to avoid blood sugar spikes. For example, rather than eat a serving of chocolate by itself, consider having some almonds with it.</li></ul><ul><li><strong>Fill half your plate with vegetables: </strong>Chan says this is a great way to automatically boost your fiber intake. By filling up on veggies, you'll naturally consume less of other potentially less healthy foods.</li></ul><ul><li><strong>Prioritize portion control: </strong>When enjoying occasional treats, Hunnes highly recommends keeping an eye on portion sizes. They cook and reheat food quickly, and they can turn a sad meal into a happy one. At the same time, microwaves can completely ruin a meal if you don't understand what materials are safe and unsafe to zap. </p><p>"Undeniably, microwaves are one of the most useful and popular kitchen appliances in history," says Mary Jones, editor at <a href="https://www.cookymom.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">CookyMom.com</a>. "While these appliances have proven so beneficial, there is a tendency that they may cause a problem like fire, especially when you place the wrong thing inside," she says.</p><p>The good news is that you can easily avoid a kitchen fiasco by taking a moment to consider the food containers you are using. From styrofoam to metal, here are things you should think twice about before putting in the microwave. </p><h2><strong>1. While the <a href="https://www.plasticfoodservicefacts.com/foodservice-safety/fda-safety-of-polystyrene-foodservice-produc" target="_blank" rel="noopener">FDA</a> deems expanded polystyrene foam safe for food contact, and there are some polystyrene foam containers that are marked as microwave-safe, <a href="https://www.insider.com/can-you-microwave-styrofoam" target="_blank" rel="noopener">it's best to avoid putting styrofoam in the microwave altogether</a>.  </p><p>"Even though these types of containers are commonly used to keep your food and drinks warm due to the insulation provided, Styrofoam doesn't react well to the high temperatures emitted by a microwave," says Ron Shimek, President, <a href="https://www.mrappliance.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Mr. Appliance</a>. "This could lead the material to break, melt, or release toxic chemicals that could mingle with your food.</p><h2><strong>2. Plastic bags and containers </strong></h2><p><strong></strong></p><div type="image" title="Frozen strawberries and frozen blueberries in their own plastic bags" height="1414" width="1885" msid="89977872" hostid="261"></div><p>Microwaving plastics can cause chemicals to leach into your food or drink. Unless it's clearly labeled safe for the microwave, you should avoid microwaving any food in plastic. </p><p>The two main chemicals that could leach out are phthalates and BPA, which are commonly added to plastic to make it flexible and pliable. Moreover, thin, single-use plastics and cold-storage containers — like condiment cups, butter tubs, and yogurt cartons — can melt in the microwave. </p><p>It's worth noting that most plastic products have a number associated with them, typically displayed in a small recycling triangle emblem. You can technically use those numbers as a guide to understand what plastics are microwave-safe. As a quick guide, avoid putting plastics with numbers 1, 3, 6, or 7 in the microwave. Safer options are labeled 2, 4, and 5. </p><p>Even still, it's better to be safe. Microwave-safe plastics usually have a marking indicating they are safe to use, so make it a habit to check for those symbols, Jones says. A microwave-safe symbol usually features three wavy lines, which indicate heat.</p><h2><strong>3. Metal utensils and cookware </strong></h2><p><strong></strong></p><div type="image" title="Metal utensils close up" height="2391" width="3188" msid="89977874" hostid="261"></div><p>To understand why it's not a good idea to put metal in a microwave, you need to have a basic understanding of how microwaves work.</p><p>When you press the start button, an electron tube inside the microwave — known as a magnetron — generates electromagnetic waves. Those waves are absorbed by the water molecules in the food, producing the the high temperatures that heats everything up.</p><p>Metal is unsafe to put in the microwave because it does not absorb electromagnetic waves. Metals are conductive, so with enough heat, those waves become concentrated on the surface. </p><p>"When microwaved, all metals, including utensils, cookware, and travel mugs can spark a fire," says Shimek. This also includes any objects with metal in it, like Chinese takeout containers with metal handles, dishware with metallic paint or trim, or any packaging with metal twist ties or staples.  </p><h2><strong>4. Insulated travel mugs and bottles</strong></h2><p><strong></strong></p><div type="image" title="Person holding a metal reusable water bottle" height="1134" width="1512" msid="89977876" hostid="261"></div><p>It might seem like a good idea to heat up your coffee or tea straight in your travel mug, but this definitely should be avoided. Most travel mugs are made out of stainless steel or plastic. Travel mugs made out of ceramic are the only kind of mug that's safe to reheat. </p><h2><strong>5. Aluminum foil</strong></h2><p><strong></strong></p><div type="image" title="Sandwich in aluminum foil with an iced tea next to it" height="1414" width="1885" msid="89977879" hostid="261"></div><p>As a thin form of metal, aluminum foil should not be put in the microwave. Aluminum foil will reflect energy, not absorb it, says Jones. Just like metal utensils, foil can spark, resulting in damage or a fire.</p><p>It also doesn't make sense to cover food in aluminum foil. Remember: Metal reflects microwaves away from foods, and generally would slow their heating. As the Department of Agriculture's <a href="https://www.fsis.usda.gov/food-safety/safe-food-handling-and-preparation/food-safety-basics/cooking-microwave-ovens#12" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Food and Safety Inspection Service</a> (FSIS) explains it, food can't absorb microwaves if it's covered by aluminum foil. </p><p>That said, the FSIS says aluminum foil in small amounts, for short times, could be safe. For example, you may want to use a small amount of foil to shield a portion of a food item to prevent it from overcooking. If you do this, make sure the foil is as smooth as possible and keep close tabs on cooking. </p><h2><strong>6. Cardboard food boxes</strong></h2><div type="image" title="Takeout containers and bag on a round table" height="1412" width="1883" msid="89977882" hostid="261"></div><p>Plain cardboard takeout containers should be OK to microwave — check for the microwave-safe label. However, if the container is lined with waterproof coating of wax or plastic, or the box contains metal, skip the microwave. Provided it truly is plain cardboard—again, check for that microwave-safe symbol—you can microwave it for about 60 to 90 seconds only; otherwise, it will dry out and pose a fire hazard. </p><h2><strong>7. Brown paper bags</strong></h2><div type="image" title="brown paper bag on a table with an apple and a pb&amp;j" height="1442" width="1922" msid="89977884" hostid="261"></div><p>Some paper products like towels, plates, and bowls are microwave safe. Shimek says you should always use one of these to cover a container in the microwave to keep the contents from splattering.</p><p>However, paper bags are a different story.
