One is that metals stocks are always linked to crude oil prices and, right now, they have jumped $84 per barrel, which is probably at a recent high. Usually when crude prices go up, base commodity prices also go up, which is a good thing for metal companies,” said Deven R Choksey, managing director at KR Choksey Investment Managers told Business Insider. Currently, the crude oil prices are at $85 per barrel, trading at a 2-month high after the US oil inventory fell for the seventh straight week to levels last seen in 2018. Note that crude oil is a basic input in the production process and is used to fuel cars and planes for transportation and generate electricity for use in production of goods and services. So any change in the price of oil will impact the costs for the company and hence increase the product price. Another reason for the rise in metal prices is that companies had cut down production in recent weeks because they thought the demand wasn’t strong enough. “Anywhere across the globe particularly Europe production capacities at being pared, they (companies) are not increasing the production be it because of environment issues or covid related restrictions. Many companies have been keeping their production capacity at a lower level, which is resulting in higher prices of the product due to shortage of supply,” added Choksey. Metals are mirroring the rally in crude oil and the recent output cuts are helping

New Delhi, Mar 11 () JSW Steel on Wednesday said it has registered a growth of 5 per cent in crude steel production at 1.320 MT in February 2020.The company had produced 1.257 million tonne (MT) crude steel during the same period last year, it said in a filing to the BSE. The output of flat rolled products also rose 7 per cent to 0.982 MT from 0.920 MT in the year-ago month. The output of long rolled products was flat at 0.308 MT last month. JSW Steel crude steel output grows 5 pc in Feb

New Delhi, Feb 10 () JSW Steel on Monday reported 2.9 per cent decline in crude steel output at 14.10 lakh tonnes (LT) during January, 2020. The company had posted crude steel output of 14.53 lakh tonnes in the year-ago period, JSW Steel said in a filing to BSE. During the month under review, there was 1.4 per cent decline in production of flat rolled products at 10.25 LT, as against 10.40 LT in January 2019, it said. The company also registered 0.5 per cent decline in the output of its long rolled products at 3.42 LT as compared to the year-ago month, it added. JSW Steel is an integrated steel company in India with an installed steel-making capacity of 18 million tonnes per annum (MTPA). SID DRR

New Delhi, Apr 14 () The domestic steel players have started re-working their business plans for the next phase of the lockdown, which was announced earlier in the day by the prime minister, industry sources said .Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that the current lockdown will be extended till May 3, saying it is necessary to contain the spread of the novel coronavirus in the country.He said detailed guidelines on implementation of the new lockdown will be announced on Wednesday, and some relaxations may be allowed after April 20 in places where there are no hotspots.The industry players who were planning to scale up production have now started to re-work their strategy in the wake of the extended lockdown period, sources said.Any decision regarding scaling up the output levels will be now taken after April 20, they said.The demand for steel fell due to the outbreak of COVID-19 followed by the lockdown period, which ultimately led to reduction in production level.Some of the major steel producers like Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) and Tata Steel Ltd (TSL) which together contribute about 20 per cent to India's total steel production had slashed production by almost 50 per cent.At the Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Ltd (RINL), daily production level of hot metal came down to 12,000 tonne from 18,000 tonne.Last week, Sajjan Jindal-led JSW Steel had even announced that it has started preparations to scale up its production levels.The domestic players are also concerned about the inventory levels which has built up during the lockdown, sources said adding there is no issue in movement of raw materials."After the government's intervention, supply of raw material remains unaffected but due to lack of demand inventories have built up. Lockdown: Steel players start re-working on business plans

New Delhi, May 12 () The domestic steel sector will take a longer time to recover from COVID-19 disruptions and will need government's handholding to emerge from this crisis situation, a top industry executive said. The COVID-19 outbreak in India followed by the lockdown has impacted the steel industry severely. It has created demand destruction, affected the output of steel players as well as the supply chain, Seshagiri Rao, Joint Managing Director and Group CFO of JSW Steel said. "Government handholding is required either by monetary measures or fiscal measures to support it (steel sector)... as the recovery will take take a much longer time in India," he said. The nationwide lockdown since March 25 to contain the spread of coronavirus is scheduled to end on May 17. Speaking on the challenges of Micro, Small &amp; Medium Enterprises in the sector, Rao said they are not able to get working capital and are facing issues with availability of workforce and logistics movement. Following the coronavirus-induced lockdown, the total production of crude steel in April this year came down by nearly 65 per cent. It was produced by only six large players of the sector including JSW Steel. The six big companies could operate on an average of 51 per cent capacity utilization, balance companies' capacity utilization fell by 94.5 per cent. The top six steel making companies in India are Tata Steel Ltd, JSW Steel, Jindal Steel and Power Ltd, ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India, Steel Authority of India Ltd and Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Ltd. During April 2020, demand fell by 91 per cent to just 7 lakh tonne compared to about 7.5 MT of steel in April 2019, Rao said adding that bank lending to the sector also witnessed a significant decline. Rao said the industry needs to relook at at its entire financial and risk management models, do rationalisation of manpower and undertake other measures to become cost effective. He further said large steel companies are looking for opportunities available globally. Steel exporting countries like Russia, Japan are badly affected. China has also been affected. MUMBAI: The markets are on a roll, with the <keyword id="6484188" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sensex">Sensex</keyword> and Nifty making fresh life highs, led by gains in banks, auto and energy counters. 
 
The new life high for Sensex is 26,356.24; and that for Nifty is 7,865.85. 
 
The Nifty extended its winning streak for fifth consecutive session and hit an all-time high as FIIs continued to pump in dollars in Indian markets on expectations of pick-up in economy 
 
Sudip Bandyopadhyay, President, Destimoney Securities, is of the view that the market will continue to move upwards. 
 
“A lot of FIIs money is coming out of Russia into Indian markets through BRICS fund. Domestic investors are also entering the market and that is providing support,” said Bandyopadhyay. 
 
At 2:02 p.m.; the 50-share index was at 7,860.95, up 69.25 points or 0.89 per cent. It touched an all-time high of 7,865.85 and a low of 7,779.20 in trade today. 
 The S&amp;P <keyword id="35140" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="BSE">BSE</keyword> Sensex was at 26,340.82, up 237.59 points or 0.91 per cent. It touched an all-time high of 26,356.24 and a low of 26,075.28 in trade today. 
 
Sandeep Tandon of Quant Broking is of the view that market went through consolidation in the last three months. It is light at the moment and looks set for next leg of upmove. 
 
The CNX Midcap Index rallied 1.27 per cent and the CNX Smallcap Index surged 2.10 per cent. 
 
Among the sectoral indices, the CNX Bank Nifty was up 1.49 per cent, the CNX Auto Index gained 1.02 per cent, the CNX Energy Index rose 1.42 per cent. 
 
The CNX FMCG Index was down 0.75 per cent and the CNX IT Index slipped 0.51 per cent. 
 BPCL (up 5.25 per cent), <keyword id="6355975" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Axis-Bank">Axis Bank</keyword> (up 3.11 per cent), <keyword id="45008" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tata-Power">Tata Power</keyword> (up 3.04 per cent), BHEL (up 2.91 per cent) and Tata Motors (up 2.87 per cent) were among the major Nifty gainers. 
 
ITC (1.92 per cent), Infosys (1.01 per cent), HCL Tech (0.80 per cent), HDFC (0.70 per cent) and TCS (0.68 per cent) were among the index losers. 
 
The market breadth was positive on the NSE with 1090 gainers against 425 losers. 
 
Foreign institutional investors were net buyers worth Rs 625.18 crore and domestic institutional investors were net buyers worth Rs 135.75 crore on Thursday as per the provisional data from the National Stock Exchange.
