New Delhi, Forty-two per cent of children in the age group of 14 to 18 years in <keyword id="6355185" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="rural-india" source="Orion">rural India</keyword> cannot read easy <keyword id="20228834" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sentences-in-english" source="Orion">sentences in English</keyword>, while more than half of them struggle with simple division problems, according to the <keyword id="10211733" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="annual-status" source="Orion">Annual Status</keyword> of Education Report (<keyword id="20226735" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="aser" source="keywords">ASER</keyword>) 2023 released on Wednesday. The ASER 2023 '<keyword id="20228833" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="beyond-basics" source="keywords">Beyond Basics</keyword>' survey was conducted in 28 districts across 26 states, reaching a total of 34,745 youths in the age group 14-18 years. One rural district was surveyed in each major state, with the exception of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, where two rural districts were surveyed. The annual report published by the Pratham Foundation also found that more than half of the students in the 14-18 age group struggle with division problems. "About 25 pc of this age group still cannot read a class 2 level text fluently in their regional language. More than half struggle with division (3-digit by 1-digit) problems. Only 43.3 pc of 14-18-year olds are able to do such problems correctly. This skill is usually expected in class 3 and 4. "A little over half can read sentences in English (57.3). Of those who can read sentences in English, almost three quarters can tell their meanings (73.5 pc)," the report said. ASER reports are also used by the government while formulating policies. Across enrollment categories, females (76 per cent) do better than males (70.9 per cent) in reading a Class 2 level text in their regional language. In contrast, males do better than their female counterparts in arithmetic and English reading. The report says that around 45 per cent of the students surveyed could calculate the number of hours a child had slept based on the time she went to bed at night and woke up in the morning. In another everyday task of measuring an object with a scale, 85 per cent of those surveyed could calculate the length of an object correctly if it was placed at the '0' mark on the ruler. But when the object was moved and placed elsewhere on the ruler, less than 40 per cent could give the right answer. Two-thirds of the surveyed youths (65.1 pr cent) were able to read functional instructions on a packet of ORS solution, the report said. According to the report, low levels of foundational numeracy affect the ability of youth in tackling everyday calculations where they need to apply measurement or use the unitary method in practical situations, or even do simple financial computations (managing a budget, applying a discount or calculating interest rates or repayment of a loan. "Catch up efforts for foundational literacy and numeracy are needed for a significant portion of the 14-18 population, not only for doing better in school but also for everyday needs. Data from ASER 2023 indicates that building foundational literacy and numeracy may be needed for about a fourth of youth in the 14-18 age group. "NEP (National Education Policy) 2020 recognizes the need for 'catch up' in the case of those who have fallen behind. Thus, programs could be put in place, if they do not already exist, to help students from <keyword id="20228831" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="std-viii" source="keywords">Std VIII</keyword> and higher grades who are lagging behind academically," it added. ASER is a nationwide citizen-led household survey that provides a snapshot of the status of children's schooling and learning in rural <keyword id="19895063" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="india" source="keywords">India</keyword>. First implemented in 2005, the 'basic' ASER survey was conducted annually until 2014 and switched to an alternate-year cycle in 2016. The 'basic' ASER collects information about enrollment in preschool and school for children in the age group of three to 16, and assesses children aged between five to 16 one-on-one to understand their foundational reading and arithmetic abilities. In the intervening years, the ASER survey dives deeper into different aspects of children's schooling and learning in rural India. The 2023 survey explored the following domains: what activities are India's youth currently engaged in, do they have basic and applied reading and math abilities, their digital awareness and skills, do they have access to smartphones, what do they use smartphones for, and can they do simple tasks on their smartphones? "Trends on basic learning have remained relatively unchanged over the last decade. Although the National Achievement Survey (NAS) and ASER use different metrics and methods for assessing learning, both point to the fact that basic learning levels of elementary school children need significant improvement. "NEP 2020 also clearly states the urgent need for ensuring that by <keyword id="20228832" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="std-iii" source="keywords">Std III</keyword>, children have acquired basic reading and arithmetic skills," the report said.

<keyword id="3216" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="students" source="Orion">Students</keyword> of class 8 had faced maximum difficulties in arranging digital devices for online classes during the pandemic, a survey report by the National Achievement Survey (<keyword id="6419246" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="nas" source="Orion">NAS</keyword>, 2021) on hardships faced by students has revealed. As many as 84 per cent students in class 8 had trouble keeping up with online classes as they had no access to digital device at home, while 97 per cent experienced anxiety and fear during the pandemic. The survey was conducted among 4.23 lakh students in more than 62,000 teachers and 15,000 schools in UP. Post Covid-19, NAS is the first and biggest achievement survey of its kind, and the findings reflect the impact of the pandemic on learning among students. The report says that class 10 students faced the least trouble in arranging for the same in <keyword id="6357713" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="uttar-pradesh" source="Orion">Uttar Pradesh</keyword>. On the other hand, while 47 per cent and 48 per cent classes 3 and 5 students had trouble arranging digital devices, 46 per cent and 48 per cent classes 3 and 5 students experienced anxiety. The report showed that 46 per cent class 10 students were having no access to digital devices, and 45 per cent of them had experienced fear, worry and anxiety. Nearly 59 per cent students from primary section - classes 3 and 5 - learned singing, painting, cooking, engaged in indoor games, and spent joyful time with family as against 52 per cent of students from higher classes who were engaged in extra-curricular activities during the pandemic. "The trend is not limited to UP. Big states like <keyword id="13126" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="maharashtra" source="Orion">Maharashtra</keyword>, too, showed a similar pattern. The report shows performance of students worsening across all types of schools, including those run centrally. This needs an immediate examination," said an official. Any person having a travel history to affected countries within the last 21 days and developing an unexplained acute rash along with any of the symptoms — are suspected to be suffering from monkeypox. The symptoms to watch out for are — swollen lymph nodes, fever, headache, body aches and profound weakness. An infection can be confirmed only after conducting a PCR test or laboratory test by the ICMR-National Virology, Pune. If symptoms are observed, the patient is advised to isolate either at a hospital or at home – in a separate room with separate ventilation. Patients are also advised to wear a triple layer mask and cover the skin lesions as much as possible by wearing long sleeves and long pants to minimize contact risk. The patient should closely monitor for any of the following symptoms during the period of isolation — pain in eye or blurring of vision, shortness of breath or chest pain, difficulty in breathing, altered consciousness or seizure, lethargy. If observed, they should immediately contact a hospital or a doctor. “Monkeypox is usually a self-limited disease with the symptoms lasting from two to four weeks. Severe cases occur more commonly among children and are related to the extent of virus exposure, patient health status and nature of complications. The extent to which asymptomatic infection occurs is unknown,” said the guidelines report. Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP), which tracks infectious diseases in the country, has been asked to remain alert along with all the healthcare facilities. “Even one case of monkeypox is to be considered as an outbreak. Use of material such as clothing, bedding, or materials used in healthcare settings used by the contaminated patients should be strictly avoided. Travellers should also avoid eating or preparing meat from wild game (bushmeat) or using products derived from wild animals from Africa (creams, lotions, powders). Airport authorities have also been asked to stay alert and familiarize themselves with the monkeypox symptoms and conduct strict thermal screening, especially of those people who have a traveler history to affected countries in the last 21 days. Monkeypox cases have so far been reported in the USA, UK, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Australia, Canada, Austria, Canary Islands, Israel and Switzerland.
