Increasingly, people are using a new word to describe these interactions: fancy. In a world where navigating even the tiniest blip can turn into a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/tech/how-to-contact-facebook-problems-with-account-other-issues">consumer nightmare</a>, the ability to speak with a real, live human being has become special.I probably do not have to tell you how difficult, if not impossible, it is to get in touch with a customer-service representative nowadays. Companies have downsized and phased out call centers in an effort to cut costs, causing wait times to balloon. Business phone numbers are buried deep on their websites, meant to be accessed by only the most determined consumers. Once customers do get on the line, they're confronted with an army of robots designed to keep them from speaking with someone. In some cases, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.vox.com/23571375/no-call-center-phone-number-frontier-facebook">it is truly impossible to speak with an actual person</a>. Corporations are pushing consumers toward chatbots and emails and FAQs and some good old figure-it-out-on-your-own nudges, all in the name of efficiency and, ultimately, profits. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cvs-pharmacy-use-ai-customer-service-call-centers-tilak-mandadi-2024-6">Companies are now claiming</a> that <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ai-take-anger-out-customer-complaints-call-centers-softbank-japan-2024-5">AI will fix this</a>, which, I don't think we should hold our collective breath.In the midst of all this, the phone call has become a status symbol of sorts. You want to speak to a representative? That's a privilege, not a right.Companies have made it so difficult to talk to a person that customers — especially younger people — have started to internalize the idea of a phone call as a premium product. Gen Zers don't like to talk on the phone, except when it makes them feel exclusive and important. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.mckinsey.com/capabilities/operations/our-insights/operations-blog/why-your-kids-arent-calling-you-but-they-are-calling-their-bank">McKinsey recently found</a> that when Gen Zers were engaging with premium brands or services — say, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/american-express-platinum-card-gold-gen-z-millennial-rewards-2024-6">a fancy American Express card</a> — they were actually more likely to make a call than millennials and as likely to call as boomers. They see the ability to call as a concierge-like service that helps them skip to the front of the line and offload the labor of whatever they're trying to accomplish onto someone else. "The verbatims we heard were things like, 'Well, if I'm paying $500 for a premium card from Barclays or Amex or whatnot, then part of the service for me is phone,'" said Eric Buesing, a partner at McKinsey who advises clients in banking and financial services. "This is a generation that's always grown up with digital and not the transition to digital, and therefore the phone is not more of a legacy, it's more of an assistant, somebody that will just do it for me."Gen Zers aren't wrong in their assessment that the phone is a perk. It's a fact of life across the consumer economy.If you've ever experienced a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/flying-delays-cancellations-passenger-airlines-air-travel-rights-refunds-fees-2024-8">flying snafu</a> while traveling with people who have various airline statuses, you may have noticed some of your fellow travelers had a much easier time getting their flight rerouted or their baggage found. That's not an accident: Airlines used to have separate phone numbers for elites — and in some cases, they still do — but now, even if high-status passengers don't know the magic number, they get sorted into better and faster phone service anyway."The top tiers of elite status do give you access to special phone numbers," said Clint Henderson, a managing editor at The Points Guy, a travel blog and website. "They also know your phone number when you're calling, so they'll route you to a quicker queue."Henderson lamented that this passenger caste system isn't as good as it used to be — for the winners, obviously. In the past, you got really specialized call desks and agents who could go extraordinarily above and beyond if you were lucky (and spent enough). Now, he said, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/air-travel-airline-customer-service-airports-delayed-canceled-flights-terrible-2023-2">airline cost-cutting</a> has even come for elite travelers. Still, they're getting a much better deal on the phone than everyone else."It used to be really, really good," Henderson said. "And now it's just really nice to have, especially when there's a meltdown or something, because you're going to get priority for callbacks and for rebooking."It's not just airlines — plenty of companies are great at finding all kinds of ways to sort customers into priority levels, including when it comes to the phone. Verizon, for example, charges a $10 "agent assistance fee" when you pay your bill by calling its customer-service line. AT&amp;T and T-Mobile charge to pay via human, too. The only way to get live phone support 24/7 from Yahoo is by paying. (I am not entirely sure how many people need to call Yahoo these days, but <a target="_blank" href="https://www.reddit.com/r/yahoo/comments/uncvy3/customer_service_is_a_paid_subscription/">per Reddit</a>, this is an issue people have encountered.) Best Buy's 24/7 phone tech support is available as part of a package that costs $180 annually — something it took me a lengthy back-and-forth with a chat assistant to figure out. (Best Buy points out that package has other features and that there are plenty of free ways to connect with its agents.) AppleCare+ gets you priority phone access. Fidelity has various tiers of advisory services. You may be able to get someone on the phone at a lower tier, depending what you need, but to get phone access to a dedicated team of advisors, you have to invest $50,000. Consumers are frustrated that access to a human is on the decline — that extreme corporate frugality has rendered hearing a voice on the other end of the line a novelty. Simultaneously, those with premium status have come to, probably fairly, believe that spending so much money entitles them to a level of direct access that's become scarce."It becomes really easy for companies to start positioning the access to phone service as a premium," said Michelle Kinch, an assistant professor of business administration at Dartmouth's Tuck School of Business. "It's more expensive, and so therefore you've got to have the revenue associated with that to make it a profitable part of the business."It just kind of boils down to that cost-benefit. If I, as a company, can calculate what my customer profitability is, then I can determine where I could deploy those more expensive resources, particularly if I'm going to engender higher levels of loyalty from the customer as a result. It becomes a perk."Kinch's <a target="_blank" href="https://www.hbs.edu/ris/Publication%20Files/19-089_41436e5b-f067-4040-9281-5069a1474b3d.pdf">research</a> on the impact of increasingly sterile customer service on the consumer psyche has found that lacking human contact can make an already anxiety-inducing situation worse. When people are on edge — which they often are when they're trying to reach a representative — they crave human contact. Just the reassurance that they could talk to someone if they wanted makes them feel better. She's recently been working on a small-scale study on AI in customer service and has observed that people interacting with virtual agents reported feeling more anxious immediately after those interactions than those who dealt with people. Anecdotally, it tracks — plenty of people have had the experience of, say, confirming a credit-card charge with a bot and then wondering if that confirmation stuck. And in a high-anxiety situation, like dealing with a travel cancellation or making a financial transaction, people just really want the option to talk to someone if they need to."We have that old adage that misery loves company for a reason," Kinch said.She recently experienced a pay-to-phone conundrum with a prominent research platform. She switched jobs and got locked out of her old email, and the only way for her to call customer service about the problem was to pay for a subscription. Even the person on the phone couldn't solve her issue, but she had to keep paying to subscribe because the only way to close her account was over the phone, too.There aren't many obvious solutions here. Buesing, from McKinsey, said call volumes were going up at many organizations, meaning the need for human contact isn't going away. He's talking to his clients about introducing premium chatbots to solve customers' problems. That could perhaps be nice for people who access them, though given the state of the chatbot, which is mediocre at best, it's hard to imagine exactly how a chatbot could achieve premium status.Companies could, of course, invest more in call centers and hire people to talk to customers, but that would require them to do something they would very much like to avoid: spend money.Part of the reason the phone feels fancy is that it is fancy, or at least a relief. Sometimes you want to explain your issue to someone (without yelling or being mean, eh) and get it figured out and taken care of. Mumbai: The Reserve Bank is unlikely to cut the benchmark <keyword id="20071327" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="interest-rate" source="keywords">interest rate</keyword> in its forthcoming bi-monthly monetary policy review later in the week as <keyword id="19999652" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="retail-inflation" source="keywords">retail inflation</keyword> is still a cause of concern, and there is a possibility of the Middle East crisis deteriorating further, impacting crude oil and commodity prices, say experts. Earlier this month, the government reconstituted the Reserve Bank's rate-setting panel -- <keyword id="19913109" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Monetary-Policy-Committee" source="keywords">Monetary Policy Committee</keyword> (MPC). The reconstituted panel, with three newly appointed external members, will commence its maiden meeting on Monday. MPC Chairman RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das will reveal the outcome of the three-day discussion on Wednesday (October 9). The <keyword id="19899810" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Reserve-Bank-of-India" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Reserve Bank of India" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Reserve Bank of India">Reserve Bank of India</keyword> (RBI) has kept the repo or short-term lending rate unchanged at 6.5 per cent since February 2023, and experts think some easing could only be possible in December. The government has tasked the central bank to ensure that Consumer Price Index (CPI) based retail inflation remains at 4 per cent with a margin of 2 per cent on either side. In the current context, experts feel that the RBI may not follow the US Federal Reserve, which lowered the benchmark rates by 50 basis points, and the central banks of some developed nations, which have reduced the interest rates. "We do not expect any change in the <keyword id="20094323" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="repo-rate" source="keywords">repo rate</keyword> or stance by MPC. The reason is that inflation for September and October will be above 5 per cent, and the present low inflation is due to the base effect. Besides, core inflation is inching upwards," said Madan Sabnavis, Chief Economist, Bank of Baroda. Further, the recent Iran-Israel imbroglio can intensify, and there is uncertainty here, he said. "Hence, the status quo is the most likely option even for new members. Inflation forecast may be lowered by 10-20 bps and no change in GDP forecast likely," said Sabnavis. The central bank last hiked the repo rate to 6.5 per cent in February 2023 and since then, it has held the rate at the same level. Icra Chief Economist Aditi Nayar said that given the undershooting in the initial first quarter GDP growth relative to the MPC's forecast and the likely sizeable undershooting in the second quarter CPI inflation print as well, "we believe a stance change to neutral may be appropriate in the October 2024 policy review". This could be followed by a shallow rate-cutting cycle of 25 bps each in December 2024 and February 2025, she added. "The abundant monsoon offers some insurance for crop inflation. The impact of global political developments and geopolitical uncertainty on the growth inflation dynamics remains a risk," Nayar added. An HSBC report said three developments stand out -- softer growth numbers have trickled in recently, inflation has been falling, and the external environment has moved from rate hikes to cuts. "We believe the RBI doesn't gain from waiting any longer. We think it will change its stance from a hawkish 'withdrawal of accommodation' to 'neutral' in the upcoming 9 October policy meeting, followed by repo rate cuts of 25 bps each in the December and February meetings, taking the repo rate to 6 per cent," the report said. The RBI kept the repo rate unchanged at 6.5 per cent in its August bi-monthly review amid risks from higher food inflation. This was the ninth consecutive MPC meeting, which decided to maintain the status quo on the rate front. Pradeep Aggarwal, founder and chairman, Signature Global (India) Limited, said while the real estate industry, developer community, and homebuyers are hoping for an interest rate cut in the upcoming monetary policy review, the RBI is likely to hold on to the interest rate cuts for the tenth consecutive time. "The apex bank still seems uncomfortable with the overall retail inflation scenario, particularly food inflation. As such, it is expected to maintain the status quo. The recent interest rate cut by the US Federal Reserve has ignited similar hopes even in India, but the domestic scenario is very different," he added. SBM Bank India Head Treasury Mandar Pitale believed that the MPC has persistently advocated a restrictive policy until inflation aligns durably towards the 4 per cent target. "With the unfavourable base effect taking the next couple of CPI prints near 5 per cent plus or minus, it will pose a major challenge for MPC to start easing from the October meeting," Pitale said, adding that the MPC is also expected to deliberate upon the global factors like growth-inflation behaviour in developed economies. The government has appointed Ram Singh, Saugata Bhattacharya, and Nagesh Kumar as external members of the MPC. They have replaced Ashima Goyal, Shashanka Bhide, and Jayanth R Varma. Apart from the Governor, the other internal members are the RBI Deputy Governor in charge of monetary policy Michael Debabrata Patra and the Executive Director monetary policy department of RBI Rajiv Ranjan. In an off-cycle meeting in May 2022, the MPC raised the policy rate by 40 basis points and it was followed by rate hikes of varying sizes, in the subsequent meetings till February 2023. The repo rate was raised by 250 basis points cumulatively between May 2022 and February 2023.

The DICGC's mandate since its inception has been the reimbursement of insured amounts to depositors of failed banks. Daava Soochak, a user-friendly online tool, is part of DICGC's ongoing commitment to improving the services provided for depositors. "Depositors can now track the status of their claims by entering their mobile number (registered with their bank) on the DICGC website," said DICGC, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Reserve Bank of India (<keyword id="19899808" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="RBI" source="keywords">RBI</keyword>). To begin with, depositors can view the status of their claims for banks placed under All Inclusive Directions (AID) post-April 01, 2024. The corporation ensures that all categories of deposits with banks except institutional deposits. The <keyword id="20132734" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="deposit-insurance" source="keywords">deposit insurance</keyword> coverage limit has been enhanced six times since 1962, from Rs 1,500 per depositor held in the same right and same capacity at all the branches of the insured bank to Rs 5,00,000 on February 04, 2020. At present, 97.8% of the total deposit accounts are fully protected. Of the remaining 2.2 % of accounts, deposits are insured up to the limit of Rs 5 lakh. In terms of value, 43.1 % of the deposits were insured as of March 2024. In the case of liquidated banks and banks under the Reserve Bank's All-Inclusive Directions (AIDs), the DICGC settled claims amounting to Rs 1,432 crore during 2023-24. During the year, it received repayments of Rs 900.73 crore, of which Rs 760.83 crore was from liquidated/transferee banks and Rs 139.90 crore from banks under AID. All banks operating in India are registered with the corporation for deposit insurance. The number of banks registered with DICGC was 1,997 as of March 31, 2024, of which 140 were commercial banks and 1,857 were cooperative banks. The total premium received by the corporation during 2023-24 stood at Rs 23,879 crore, with commercial banks contributing 94.4% and cooperative banks accounting for the remaining 5.6 %.

"I just wanted 20,000 to be something special," he said.Before that, he has a road trip planned to get his store count to 19,999. He left his job at a software startup in late 1997 and started doing contract work to make it easier to travel and add more Starbucks stores to his list. He logs each store visit in a Microsoft Access Database and on <a target="_blank" class="" href="http://www.starbuckseverywhere.net/">his website</a>.As of June, Starbucks had over 39,000 company-owned and licensed stores. That growth, plus a constant stream of new openings and store closures, means Winter will never really achieve the goal he set out in 1997, he said.He's not giving up, though. "The best I can do is visit as many stores as possible in my lifetime, and I have come to terms with that reality," he said.The endeavor has taken him to all 50 states and dozens of other countries, from Japan to South Africa. He's also met up with other people who are also trying to visit different Starbucks stores and has written a book about Starbucking that he's trying to get published.<h2 id="175d2658-c274-4ae0-8608-6a6cc3cf42ba">Starbucks needs to run fewer, better stores, Winter says</h2>Winter has advice for CEO Niccol and the rest of Starbucks' executive team as they attempt to improve results at the coffee chain.Not all Starbucks stores that Winter visits are as welcoming as that Houston location where he played chess with friends back in 1995. <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/starbucks-workers-requested-store-changes-new-ceo-2024-10">Starbucks employees</a> at many US stores seem to be stretched thin, he said, as they struggle to fill a torrent of drink orders and have little time to chat with patrons.While some Starbucks stores that Winter has visited, such as those in college towns, still attract lots of in-person patrons, others, such as in small towns and rural areas, often have empty seating areas and mainly serve drive-thru customers, he said."By trying to maximize throughput, they are compromising the customer service and the customer experience," Winter said. "And I think it's come full circle and started to hurt the profits."Instead, Winter said, Starbucks should "have fewer stores with better-trained baristas rather than more stores with more poorly-trained baristas — or not even being able to staff those stores."Winter also said he hands baristas his reusable cup every time he orders a drink at a Starbucks store, but many already have their hand on a single-use paper or plastic cup when he starts placing his order.Starbucks started allowing customers to use their own reusable cups for drive-thru and mobile orders in January. It has "seen encouraging results" since it made the change, a company spokesperson told BI.The company needs to offer more training to employees on accepting those cups, Winter said.The challenges Niccol faces in making Starbucks a "third place" were illustrated this week. When BI spoke to Winter on Monday, he said that he had planned to take the call at a Starbucks store in the Dallas area, but he ended up at a biscuit shop down the street after he ran into a problem at the Starbucks location."The one that I was headed to was pickup only," with little room for him to sit, drink coffee, or plug in his computer, he said. Insider Today: Real-estate status symbols

The Italian carmaker Pagani produces fewer than 100 vehicles a year, and each comes with a seven-figure price tag. The brand is known among gearheads for its attention to detail and air of exclusivity, qualities that Pagani hopes will translate to its next project: luxury condominiums.This spring, the company unveiled plans for Pagani Residences, a 70-unit condo development in Miami's North Bay Village. The automaker says the building will offer waterfront views and living spaces "meticulously curated" by its interior-design arm. Pagani condos, much like Pagani cars, start at about $3 million. But for people desperate to claim a piece of Pagani, the price tag may be no problem at all."I sold a unit to a guy that loves Pagani cars, and it just didn't matter to him what the location was," Carlo Dipasquale, a luxury-real-estate agent in South Florida, told me. "They could've built the building inland, anywhere in Miami, for all he cared."Pagani is the latest high-end car brand to lend its name to a shiny condo project along the Miami coast, joining the likes of Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, Aston Martin, and Bentley. Beyond automakers, there's a growing list of luxury brands hoping to use real estate to turn their cultural cachet into cold, hard cash. The owner of the trendy Italian eatery Carbone is partnering with developers on a high-rise; Dolce &amp; Gabbana also has one in the works. Even Elle magazine announced this spring that it would get in on the action with a condo project near Miami Beach, hoping to sell buyers on a lifestyle pulled straight from its glossy pages.When I heard of these plans a few months ago, I was tempted to dismiss them as the kinds of vanity projects that matter only to people with too much money and an insatiable hunger for status. Some of the announcements also struck me as a bit of a stretch. Magazines have a hard enough time peddling subscriptions these days — what makes them so sure they can sell condos? But as I talked with more people, it became clear that so-called branded residences are a global phenomenon that's here to stay, with developers laying the groundwork for branded towers in hot spots like Dubai, London, and New York. The hottest — and weirdest — trend in condominiums could actually tell us a lot about the future of real estate, not to mention our brand-addled brains.The concept of branded real-estate projects isn't new. New York's five-star Sherry-Netherland Hotel began welcoming long-term residents almost a century ago, and since then roughly 700 branded residences have graced skylines around the world. But the recent boom in these projects makes it clear that we've entered a new era: More than 650 branded projects are set to open over the next five years, a doubling that Riyan Itani, the founder of the specialty consulting firm Global Branded Residences, told me is "pretty much unprecedented in any sector." Condo developers these days are laser-focused on the bottom line, and they believe linking up with a well-known label will help them sell units faster and at higher prices. Brands like Elle or Pagani stand to collect some nice licensing fees, too. But that's not what they're really after."It's about outreach to a customer base beyond your core business," Itani said. Whether you sell handbags or golf clubs, "you're able to reach out in a different way and get brand loyalty."<div type="image" title="A digital rendering of a Pagani car parked outside the planned Pagani Residences condo development at sunset." height="1754" width="3200" msid="112521069" hostid="261" sizebytes="412604"></div>Most of these projects are tied to big, swanky hospitality names like Four Seasons or Ritz-Carlton, which set aside parts of their buildings as for-sale units. These arrangements feel like natural unions — if you're a big-money traveler with a fierce loyalty to the Four Seasons, for example, you might be inclined to purchase a home that promises the same level of comfort, service, and brand recognition. But a smaller slice of branded residences, about 20%, are partnerships between forward-thinking real-estate developers and companies that appear to have nothing to do with housing. These are the most attention-grabbing, and sometimes head-scratching, marriages: Lamborghini villas in Dubai and Spain; Nobu Residences in Toronto, named for the Japanese Peruvian restaurant favored by celebrities like Drake; a Miami tower branded by the fine crystal maker Baccarat that touts the tagline "Where life forever sparkles."It's not as if these luxury-goods companies suddenly morphed into real-estate experts. They typically license their names to seasoned development firms that front the money for these projects, shepherd them to the finish line, and ultimately bear the risk and reward of the actual condo sales. While the brands leave the number crunching and floor planning to the developers, they weigh in on design flourishes — Giorgio Armani himself apparently lends a personal touch to the interiors of Residences by Armani Casa in South Florida — and the condos' marketing campaigns. The contributions may appear comparatively small, but adding a well-known company to the marquee can deliver real results for the building's owner. Itani estimates that developers working on a branded residence spend an extra 10% to 15% of what they would spend on a standard condo project, since they have to pay for all the additional amenities and the right to splash the brand's logo across the building. But in crowded cities like New York or Miami, a recognizable logo can help a new building stand out. It also translates to cash: Itani told me units in branded towers go for a global average of 30% more than comparable non-branded units."It's kind of a no-brainer for a developer," Itani told me. "From a financial standpoint, it's a very profitable enterprise."No-brainers for developers aren't always a win for consumers (take, for instance, the recent <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-are-new-homes-ugly-construction-builders-design-materials-architecture-2024-7">race toward the bottom in homebuilding</a>). But when it comes to branded residences, there are real selling points for buyers. Brand loyalists may be eager to welcome their favorite company into yet another corner of their lives. They're invited to consider what it might feel like to live inside a Lambo rather than merely speed down the coastal highway in one. There's a novelty aspect to these purchases, too. Plenty of people own luxury condos, but far fewer get to flex a prestigious name like Bentley or Porsche when directing visitors to their new pad. Developers load up these buildings with amenities to help discerning buyers feel like they're getting bang for their buck. Convenience waits around every corner: infinity pools and thermal spas, private boat slips, rooftop helipads. The Bentley Residences allows owners to park their cars in their units via a vehicle elevator. Villa Miami, the 58-story Miami condo project from Major Food Group, which owns a slew of exclusive restaurants such as the impossible-to-get-a-table-at Carbone, promises residents private dining experiences and VIP status at all its outposts. Hotels, meanwhile, offer to list branded condos on Airbnb and manage them when their owners aren't there, helping buyers make a return on investment even in their absence.The biggest attraction of these glitzy homes, however, may be peace of mind. Plenty of condos are vying for rich buyers' eyes and wallets, and they're not all created equal. But when a prestigious name like Aston Martin or Dolce &amp; Gabbana stakes its reputation on a project, buyers get some added assurance that the units will meet — or exceed — their lofty standards."These are all very well-known, established brands that people feel comfortable buying into," Laura Steinbruckner, a luxury agent in the Miami area, told me.Developers aren't likely to stray too far from this lucrative pitch. Luxury brands will probably always offer the biggest upside for builders, and even the "non-luxury" projects in the pipeline are still tied to respected brands like Hilton and are only slightly cheaper than the big-name buildings. But developers interested in branded residences have a plethora of other candidates, some of which could stretch the boundaries of the sector even further. The Elle project may seem out of left field, but Itani told me he's talking with another publication interested in making similar inroads. After all, magazines like Elle portray enviable lifestyles tied to fashion, celebrity, health, and beauty. All those things could translate to experiences within buildings, Itani told me. That's not to say all branded residences offer the same gilded path to profits. Car companies and fashion labels, unlike hotels, aren't known for their property-management chops, and there's a risk that buyers eventually tire of the marketing schtick. In a few years, you may well see some condo owners complaining that they got a Fiat level of service when they were promised a Ferrari. Rob Sykes, an associate principal at the global design firm WATG who advises companies on hotels and branded residences, told me developers shouldn't count on slapping a big name on a building and instantly reaping rewards. But he does expect to see the sector expand as non-hotel brands enter the market — just last year he was in conversations with a client who was interested in bringing a luxury jewelry brand (he wouldn't name names) into the fray.Itani was still amazed that two sectors in particular — tech and food — hadn't made more of a splash in the world of branded residences. There are a few big restaurant names, including Nobu, Major Food Group, and Cipriani, the famed Italian eatery. But Itani envisions a world in which many other newcomers turn corner-table regulars into corner-unit owners. He also sees an opening for ubiquitous tech companies like Apple or Google to sell loyal fans yet another product, one tricked out with all the latest tech and infused with their design ethos."If there are two things that a modern human being cares most about, it's what they're putting in their mouth and what phone they've got in their pocket," Itani told me. The industry's movers and shakers are still into name brands but are leaning into those that exude <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/status-symbol-item-sales-show-quiet-luxury-changing-americana-corporate-2024-9">"quiet luxury."</a> They are also spending money on personalization as well as experiences — think big trips, luxurious secondary homes, and posh sporting events.Here are 10 of the top status symbols on Wall Street in 2024.<h2 id="5642aec8-1b24-4045-876f-3fadc91a63ac">Posh sporting events</h2>Attendance at exclusive sporting events like the Paris Olympics, the US Open, and Formula 1 races has become a surefire sign of status on Wall Street, insiders told BI.Indeed, Bloomberg declared the 2024 Paris Olympics "<a target="_blank" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-08-02/wall-street-descends-on-paris-olympics-jpmorgan-citadel-executives-attend?embedded-checkout=true">Summer Davos</a>" for Wall Street in a story that reported sightings of CEOs Ken Griffin of Citadel, David Solomon of Goldman Sachs, and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-succeed-at-blackstone-schwarzman-gray-career-advice-2024-8">Stephen Schwartzman of Blackstone</a>, to name just a few.Last month, the US Open in Queens took the spotlight online as <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-open-popular-as-tennis-interest-surges-2024-9">the hottest place</a> for New York socialites to see and be seen. And where there are celebrities and influencers, there tend to be Wall Street dealmakers."All my clients went to the US Open," said Jessica Cadmus, a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/wall-streeet-styles-investment-banker-wardrobe-for-women-and-men">personal stylist</a> whose clients are almost exclusively managing directors and partners at finance firms in New York.Even junior-level employees said the famous tennis tournament was the place to be to mark the end of summer."I know at least three people in the finance community who were at the Open last night," a young private-equity employee told BI in August after attending the tournament with friends.Of course, the most elevated version of this status symbol is <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/richest-sports-billionaire-owners-nfl-nba-premier-league-cricket-wealthy-2024-5#10-steve-cohen-1">owning your own sports team</a> — or getting access to private box seats.<div type="image" title="Crowd watching the 2024 US Open Tennis Championships in New York City." height="5341" width="8011" msid="113882292" hostid="261" sizebytes="5175806"></div><h2 id="f1c8e1a4-389c-4fae-aa3f-80984327170d">Home organizers</h2>Wall Street executives have no shortage of personal assistants and staff, said Cadmus, because every moment of their time is worth thousands of dollars."Everybody that I work with has at least one person, if not multiple people, in their home all day long attending to X, Y, or Z," Cadmus told BI. "There are assemblies of nannies, home cleaners, and chefs."Lately, there has been a new trendy addition to the usual in-home lineup — that of the "home organizer."Think Marie Kondo — someone who comes into your home, takes a good look around, and crafts a custom organization plan to make your space user-friendly and effortlessly neat."I would say over the last five years, I've seen people leaning into that sort of service more, and I'd never really seen a ton of that," Cadmus said.This person might, for example, put custom inserts for your kitchen cabinets so your Le Creuset pots fit seamlessly. But an organizer tackles just about any space you could conjure up, from a pantry to the coat closet or your kid's playroom."People do want to feel more connected to the items in their home, and they do want to feel a sense that things need to have a purpose and they need to be organized," Cadmus said.<h2 id="843bc59e-8506-437f-91ef-333d3d8e2db4">Zegna sneakers</h2>A PR expert who works in the industry said they have seen a trend in one particular shoe recently among very high-ranking execs in the office: Zegna's "triple stitch" sneakers. The leather version (pictured below) costs about $1,300 per pair and come in a ton of colors. An espadrille version of the shoe was also a hot summer pick, this person said, and costs about $1,100.Cadmus likes Zegna for men's off-the-rack suits, but for office-friendly sneakers she recommends the Tom Ford nylon and suede sneakers in black and white, which she described as "heavy lifters" for her clients.<div type="image" title="Man wearing Zegna triple stitch sneaker." height="1058" width="1410" msid="113882291" hostid="261" sizebytes="135370"></div><h2 id="e65e11f4-c4c8-4313-bfe9-b5642fa8f456">Big trips and experiences</h2>Cadmus has seen a notable uptick in senior bankers going on extravagant and foreign getaways. "I feel like the shift, especially with the younger, up-and-coming rising stars is not stuff — it's experiences, it's travel," said Cadmus.This is leading to more safari adventures in Africa and, this past summer in particular, family vacations to Costa Rica. To be clear, we're not talking about an all-inclusive Sandals resort situation here. They're highly bespoke, private, and personal trips."Whether it be a Four Seasons or whether it be a super fancy boutique hotel, every bit of the travel is going to be a first-class situation."For example, you might have a personal tour guide to take you on adventure experiences away from the throngs of tourists, a chef to cook your family private dinners each night, as well as a personal driver. And when one person at a firm loves a place or experience, it tends to spread like wildfire in popularity."The culture is so strong and the word of mouth is so strong that if one thing or experience is vetted by someone and recommended, that recommendation is golden because everybody has the same sort of expectations," said Cadmus. "Things really get passed from person to person. It's a pretty tight community that way, especially in the bigger banks."<h2 id="59f49c7e-9e86-4708-8a6a-820c40beabb8">Van Cleef necklaces and Cartier bracelets</h2>Van Cleef is a high-end jewelry brand, and one type of necklace in particular has taken over the necks of Wall Street women (and the wives of male rainmakers): the Alhambra. It has an unmistakable nickel-sized pendant in the shape of a four-leaf clover, comes in various colors, and, depending on the model, costs about $3,000."I distinctly remember that my first day of banking training there were three or four girls with them on their necks, and I was like, what is that necklace?" said the private-equity junior.This person, along with the other insiders who spoke to BI for this story, laughed at the mention of the brand because it has become so ubiquitous. But cliché or not, they agreed the brand has an undeniable presence in investment banking."I think they're sort of perpetual," added Cadmus. "And beyond Wall Street too. It's just kind of a favored wealthy person brand."Another popular piece for Wall Street women is the Cartier "love" bracelet — a bangle with the brand's iconic circular screws that sells for $7,350.Cadmus loves Cartier as a choice for fine jewelry staples, but for her clients, she often opts for the slightly less popular "Juste un Clou" line."The Love bracelet has been 'the one' for a while now," she said.<div type="image" title="cartier love bracelet" height="765" width="1020" msid="113882296" hostid="261" sizebytes="31484"></div><div type="image" title="Woman on street wearing a green and gold Van Cleef &amp; Arpels Alhambra necklace." height="1854" width="2472" msid="113882295" hostid="261" sizebytes="157932"></div><h2 id="54b85fbd-3321-4add-85f4-248311f7bc54">Personal Jewelers</h2>There's another option for those who want more unique pieces: handcrafted jewelry. Cadmus said she has seen an uptick in clients who prefer to have their jewelry customized."A lot of my clients have a jeweler with who we discuss what will be made for them," said Cadmus. "We'll see something, and a lot of times we will riff on that and be like, 'oh, that's cool, but it'd be better with this stone' or, 'I like that necklace, but I would prefer it as a bracelet.' Then we talk to the jeweler, and we have it made."Depending on the materials you choose, she said, you can often have items made for 30% to 40% less than designer prices.<h2 id="e6b25c55-c06f-44c3-978b-ab654531873f">Quiet luxury clothing brands</h2>"<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/wall-streeet-styles-investment-banker-wardrobe-for-women-and-men">Quiet luxury</a>" is the new protocol for looking chic on Wall Street versus the ostentatious brand flexing of the past. The term refers to wearing pieces that are very high-quality and expensive but don't sport conspicuous logos and aren't necessarily made by household luxury names."The bonuses aren't as outsized as they used to be, and when they are, that's not something your institution really wants you to advertise in any way," Cadmus said. "So there is this quiet rule, and especially with the big MDs, which is just don't be ostentatious about your wealth. It's very frowned upon."The private-equity junior agreed. "No guy walks around with a Hermes or Gucci belt," this person said.Pop culture phenomena, like the popular HBO TV series "Succession," have put the quiet luxury trend in the spotlight. Leading actor Jeremy Strong wore a coat from the brand Loro Piana (pictured below) in an episode of the show."Loro Piana is probably the preeminent quiet luxury brand," Cadmus said of the label, which she has used for years.Other quiet luxury brands Cadmus reaches for when styling clients include Armani and Tom Ford for men and Akris and Max Mara for women. For quiet luxury bags and accessories, Cadmus recommends brands like Hermes, Celine, Bottega Veneta, and Khaite.<div type="image" title="Jeremy Strong Succession" height="1152" width="1535" msid="113882299" hostid="261" sizebytes="83210"></div><h2 id="f1c37838-120b-49dc-82ab-a82d9efc4d7c">Overhauling the homestead</h2>Cadmus has also observed an uptick in clients going all out to make their homes truly their own."Most of my clients have apartments that were originally two or three separate apartments that they had renovated to become one," said Cadmus.The same goes for their other properties. It's not surprising that high-earners on Wall Street would have second homes (or, in many cases, multiple). But it's not just buying a great place that's a status symbol — it's having a whole team behind every facet of its construction and design, said Cadmus. That means, for example, hiring a renowned architect for the project and a best-in-class interior designer to outfit the home with luxurious furnishings."It's a major production. It's not like, 'Okay, we're just going to snatch this thing up and live in it as is.' It is a major overhaul."<h2 id="93455364-2851-41bd-9d67-0fb75739c2e6">The Hamptons</h2>The beach towns of the Hamptons have long been a Wall Street favorite thanks to their proximity to Manhattan. They remain a popular spot for summer trips and second homes, Cadmus said.Even juniors tend to rent out homes in Montauk and split the cost to get in on the fun, said a former banking analyst who recently quit. Indeed, in the summer, the train from Manhattan to Montauk is "full of finance people on their phone arguing about a deal and legal docs and clacking on their laptops," added the private-equity junior.Nantucket and Cape Cod, according to Cadmus, are also popular but less cliche choices for second-home locations.<div type="image" title="Atmosphere at Midsummer Night Drinks Hosted By Lisa &amp; James Cohen at Private Residence on July 20, 2024 in East Hampton, NY." height="2400" width="3600" msid="113882289" hostid="261" sizebytes="915674"></div><h2 id="cb085dd3-e9bc-42d7-aecf-8c8c3569f7b2">Equinox memberships and personal trainers</h2>For young Wall Streeters, having an Equinox membership is par for the course, said the two ex-investment banking analysts.Equinox is a "luxury" gym that has "innovative group fitness classes, luxurious spas, and exclusive boutiques," as described on its website. A membership costs hundreds of dollars a month, varying by perks package and location access. The top-tier membership is $500 a month plus a $750 initiation fee.There are about 30 Equinox gyms in Manhattan, but "having access to the Equinox Hudson Yards location is a status symbol," said the former analyst who recently quit.As BI reported in 2019, the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/equinox-membership-prices-reviews-nyc-guide-2019-5#equinox-hudson-yards-expands-equinox-into-the-lifestyle-brand-its-been-trying-to-break-into-48">Hudson Yards location</a> has — among other amenities — views of the Hudson River in nearly every part of the gym, both indoor and outdoor pools, and is complete with its own cafe and bar.To be sure, this is a status symbol unique to younger people. Senior bankers don't want to be part of a gym scene, Cadmus said. Among their aforementioned lineup of domestic staff is usually a personal trainer who comes to their in-home gym."Yes, a younger person is going to enjoy that — there are social perks to that. But senior people do not want to be looked at when they're working out," she said. "They want somebody tracking it for them — their progression and all that kind of stuff.
