Al Sharif was stranded at Barcelona airport on Friday because of the <keyword id="20972526" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="IT-outage" source="keywords">IT outage</keyword> disrupting travel and other services. The following has been edited for length and clarity. I've worked in tech for close to two decades. I've been a <keyword id="19945384" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="software-engineer" source="keywords">software engineer</keyword> and startup founder, and have worked for large companies like Electronic Arts and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/meta-ends-restrictions-donald-trump-account-social-media-2024-7">Meta</a>. I was supposed to be flying from Barcelona-El Prat Airport to London Heathrow on business at 11 a.m. local time. I was surprised to arrive and find the flights shuttered. I was also surprised to learn there had been significant <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/crowdstrike-global-it-outage-one-defective-it-update-sparked-chaos-2024-7">malfunctions across multiple Windows-based systems</a> at the airport. It took some digging to find out that it was a global event. Even as an engineer, the outage has been strange to witness. I didn't believe there was this much dependency on a single piece of third-party software or that pushing an update irresponsibly would cause this much havoc. <h2>I realized the IT outage was happening after I arrived to chaos at the airport</h2>I left for the airport at 8 a.m. Before I got there, there were some early signs of something being wrong. I couldn't log in to my online banking app, and things were a bit slow when I logged into my Outlook-based email, but I chalked it up to my hotel WiFi. When I got to the airport at around 8:20 a.m., it was packed. The queues were endless. Several check-in desks displayed blue screens, and no one was being processed. I realized something bigger was happening. I couldn't understand where to queue, and when I asked an airport advisor, they said there was no point queuing now because there was a problem with the ticketing, booking, and reservation systems. I asked if our airport was the only one affected, and they told me that it was happening everywhere. That's when my furious Googling began. I realized that the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/crowdstrike-outage-why-taking-time-companies-recover-2024-7">issue was with CrowdStrike</a>, and it was happening globally. <h2>Disruptions at the airport continued throughout the day</h2>Over the course of the day, baggage-drop machines, vending machines, and most display boards at the airport weren't working. Check-ins were being done manually. Before I was given a handwritten paper ticket, I had to prove I had booked a flight for that day by showing staff my emails as proof of payment. Anyone with checked luggage had to bring it to the gate, and airport staff were throwing it into the cargo hold by hand. <div type="image" title="A handwritten boarding pass" height="565" width="1280" msid="111870426" hostid="261"></div>My own <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mass-it-outage-microsoft-chaos-delays-distruption-shown-in-photos-2024-7">flight has been delayed</a> by six hours, and I'm still in the airport as we're speaking. It's been annoying and inconvenient, but thankfully, the company is covering my travel, and they understand the situation is out of my control. I've spoken to people waiting in the airport for 11 hours. People seem pretty frustrated. <h2>I was surprised to learn about <keyword id="20424191" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="CrowdStrike" source="keywords">CrowdStrike</keyword>'s dominance on <keyword id="19895622" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="microsoft" source="keywords">Microsoft</keyword> devices</h2>During my delay, I've been trying to understand the situation more. It's quite intriguing and reveals that we've taken for granted how interconnected our world is and how dependent we are. I was surprised to learn that the cascading failures were caused by an update CrowdStrike pushed early Friday morning. CrowdStrike is well-known in the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-work-in-cybersecurity-expert-advice-2022-1">cybersecurity industry</a>, but until today, I don't think anyone was aware of its dominance as a platform on Windows. It didn't cross my mind that a third-party solution could cause this much damage to Windows-based machines. One of the cardinal rules of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/software-engineers-tech-panicking-golden-age-over-chatgpt-ai-blind-2023-4">software development</a> is that you typically don't want to push a fix later in the week or on a Friday. You'll have less support trying to fix any issues and the weekend is gone. It feels like cardinal rules were broken. However, CrowdStrike might have evidence to suggest that this is a freak accident, so I don't think it's fair to point fingers too much. I've seen people comment on this situation about diversification and companies not relying on just one or two providers. I don't think that's realistic. Windows is commonly used. In any free market economy, the best-performing and most suitable product will dominate the market. We need more stringent reviewing and a better understanding of the tools we use on critical infrastructure. The impact here was so big because it affected infrastructure like airports, railway stations, and hospitals. It's going to cost the economy a lot. Had there been more due diligence or even government regulation, I don't think this would have happened. I'd expect that after this, government authorities will expect widely used platforms like CrowdStrike to notify them before they push changes like this. <h2>Technology will shape our future, so we need to consider how we regulate it</h2>We haven't seen the full impact of this outage, and it's definitely put into perspective how the little devices we keep in our pockets dictate the rhythms of our lives. I don't think anyone really understood the true scope and presence of CrowdStrike before Friday. I still see our future becoming increasingly automated. There will probably be many more situations like this, especially as our society pushes toward more automation. I still think technology is a good thing, but it's made me want to get my bills in the post now and then. It usually takes a horizon event like this for lessons to be learned. I don't think technology is intrinsically good or evil; it depends on how it's used and regulated. NHAI proposes to roll this out on commercial vehicles initially then private vehicles, considering scalability and privacy concerns. The highway authority has also recommended driver behaviour analysis and back-end data analysis for fraud detection. "With GNSS, the payment modes might be converted from prepaid to postpaid. Banks and financial institutions might be able to provide faster credits based on travel plans," NHAI has recommended.

Eisenhower</a> as part of Electronic Attack Squadron 130, or VAQ-130. The squadron has just returned to its homeport in Washington state after a lengthy combat deployment to the Middle East.In the volatile region, the squadron worked alongside other elements of the carrier air wing, providing the Navy with crucial airborne capabilities as it tirelessly defended commercial shipping lanes in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden from <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nato-helicopters-kill-enemy-drones-red-sea-combat-2024-4">relentless Houthi attacks</a>.The squadron conducted multiple strikes targeting the Iran-backed rebels in Yemen and carried out hundreds of combat missions to degrade their capabilities, the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/inside-us-navy-aircraft-carrier-tactics-shift-houthi-missiles-drones-2024-2">Dwight D. It's armed with tactical jamming pods and AGM-88 HARM air-to-surface missiles that are designed to home in on electronic transmissions that come from radar systems.The aircraft is also equipped with AIM-120 air-to-air missiles, a beyond-visual-range weapon that would have been used to score the kill acknowledged by the Navy.The Navy didn't specify what Houthi threat the Growler eliminated; however, a video shared by the Eisenhower's commanding officer appeared to show a drone kill marking on the side of a Growler sitting on the Ike's flight deck, as the defense outlet <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.twz.com/air/ea-18g-growler-scored-its-first-air-to-air-kill">The War Zone</a> pointed out. A US electronic attack aircraft that battled the Houthis scored its first-ever air-to-air kill, Navy reveals

New Delhi, <keyword id="1394196" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="IBM-Chairman" source="Orion">IBM Chairman</keyword> and CEO <keyword id="202173" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="arvind-krishna" source="Orion">Arvind Krishna</keyword> on Monday emphasised that artificial intelligence (AI) does need guardrails and regulations to avoid user harm, but the focus should be on regulating bad use cases, not to pause the overall technology which has tremendous potential to transform the world. A strong proponent of AI and its future impact on certain repetitive and mundane human tasks, Krishna told IANS that some of the fears associated with AI are well-founded. "With AI, there a possibility that you can have misinformation spread really fast now. AI can make misinformation more persuasive. However, stopping AI won't achieve any purpose as bad actors will move from one country to another to spread harm as AI can easily cross boundaries," noted the Indian-origin CEO of the tech behemoth. In such a scenario, regulating bad and harmful use cases of AI would be a sensible and practical way forward. "The goal should be to spot those bad AI use cases and tell those behind it that if we catch you, you can be subjected to penalties, fines and criminal cases, etc," said Krishna. During the 'B20 Summit India 2023' last week, Krishna saidAI will take on certain low-level tasks and boost overall productivity, thus helping economics and companies grow faster. The aim, he said, is to make sure that tech companies have a "secure and accountable AI". Meanwhile, the Indian government will not regulate AI but rather adopt the approach of regulating user harm from AI and create robust guardrails, Union Minister of <keyword id="9950217" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="state-for-electronics" source="Orion">State for Electronics</keyword> and IT, <keyword id="205969" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="rajeev-chandrasekhar" source="Orion">Rajeev Chandrasekhar</keyword>, recently told IANS. Regulate bad AI use cases, not whole tech: IBM CEO Arvind Krishna

The <keyword id="19895782" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Election-Commission" source="keywords">Election Commission</keyword> has received eight applications from aggrieved <keyword id="19902220" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="candidates" source="keywords">candidates</keyword>, including those from the <keyword id="19894848" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="BJP" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="BJP" meta.hostid="153" meta.entityid="BJP">BJP</keyword> and the <keyword id="19895371" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Congress" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Congress" meta.hostid="153" meta.entityid="Congress">Congress</keyword>, for verification of tampering or modification in micro-controller chips embedded in the EVMs post declaration of Lok Sabha election results on June 4. Terming the suspicion of manipulation of the electronic voting machines "unfounded", the <keyword id="19895345" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Supreme-Court" source="keywords">Supreme Court</keyword> had on April 26 rejected the demand for reverting to the old paper ballot system. But at the same time, the top court had opened a window for the aggrieved unsuccessful candidates securing second and third places in the poll results and allowed them to seek verification of micro-controller chips embedded in five per cent EVMs per assembly constituency on a written request upon the payment of a fee to the poll panel. BJP's Ahmednagar (Maharashtra) candidate Sujay Vikhe-Patil has sought verification of the machines from 40 <keyword id="20300567" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="polling-stations" source="keywords">polling stations</keyword>. Vikhe-Patil had lost to Nilesh Lanke of NCP (Sharad Pawar) faction. A YSRCP and a DMDK candidate too have applied for the verification, according to data shared by the poll panel. According to the EC, eight parliamentary seats spread across six states are involved. The total number of polling stations for which verification has been sought is 92. Candidates who come second or third and seek verification of the EVMs will have to pay Rs 47,200 per EVM set, according to the standard operating procedure issued by the EC on June 1. According to the EC's Standard Operating Procedure (SOP), the cost submitted by manufacturers BEL and ECIL to carry out EVM "check and verification" is Rs 40,000 (plus 18 per cent GST) per set of EVM. "In addition to the cost incurred by the manufacturers, there are also administrative costs like cost of labour to shift the units, CCTV coverage, electricity charges, videography costs and various other operational costs at the district election officer level," the document said. It, however, said to make the <keyword id="21143428" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="verification-process" source="keywords">verification process</keyword> "more accessible" and inclusive in compliance to the referred mandate of the Supreme Court, it is decided that instead of going purely by the actual economic costs incurred, the administrative expenditure on <keyword id="22122362" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="EVM-verification" source="keywords">EVM verification</keyword> will be treated as "election expenditure and borne by the central or state government, as the case may be". "Accordingly, the administrative charges will be waived for the applicants -- the same shall not be charged to the applicants," it noted. The charges for EVM verification to be paid by the applicant candidate is for the current financial year 2024-25 -- till March 31, 2025, it said. An EVM set has at least one Ballot Unit, one Control Unit and a <keyword id="19975285" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="vvpat" source="keywords">VVPAT</keyword> machine. Separately, YSRCP and BJD candidates from Andhra Pradesh and Odisha respectively have also applied for EVM check following the announcement of assembly results on June 4. Assembly polls in Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh were held along with the Lok Sabha elections. In the verification exercise for assembly poll results, total assembly constituencies involved are three where verification has been sought in 26 polling stations. According to the SOP, the concerned state chief electoral officer (CEO) was required to communicate to the manufacturers the consolidated list of applicants within 30 days of the date of declaration of results -- by July 4. The CEOs have already conveyed the same to the manufacturers 15 days ahead of the schedule, the EC said. The technical SOP enumerating the methodology and steps for checking and verification of burnt memory/ micro-controller of the EVM units will be issued by the EC in due course.

New Delhi, Mobile phone exports from <keyword id="19895063" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="india" source="keywords">India</keyword> will grow more than five-fold to USD 50-60 billion in the coming time from about USD 11 billion last year, <keyword id="20860007" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="union-it-and-communications" source="keywords">Union IT and Communications</keyword> Minister <keyword id="19904138" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ashwini-vaishnaw" source="keywords">Ashwini Vaishnaw</keyword> said. Speaking at a fintech event on Wednesday, the minister said employment in the electronics manufacturing sector will increase from about 10 lakh at present to 25 lakh in the coming days. He said that 10 years ago India imported 98 per cent of mobile phones and at present 99 per cent of the devices are made in India. "(Mobile phones worth) USD 11 billion were exported last year. In the coming days, you will see exports to the tune of USD 50-60 billion. 10 lakh people work in electronics manufacturing. In the coming days, 25 lakh people will work in electronics manufacturing," <keyword id="19935038" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="vaishnaw" source="keywords">Vaishnaw</keyword> said while sharing a presentation on India's growth story. He said India will become the third largest economy by 2027 while it was ranked 11th in 2014. A report published by Jefferies Equity Research last month said that India would become the third-largest economy by 2027 and expected to achieve a market capitalization of USD 10 trillion by 2030. He said that when the country is in 5th spot in terms of economy it has created huge infrastructure in terms of railways, highways, airports etc. The minister said that the government added 5,200 kilometres of railway line last year, which is equivalent to the size of the entire Switzerland railway network.. "Already 4,972 kilometres have been completed. The entire month of March is left. We will add 5500 kilometres (railway lines) this year," Vaishnaw said. He said airports in the country have doubled in the last 10 years. "In 2013, every global discourse was negative about India. Everyone used to say it is a fragile economy. There was uncertainty around it. Today, when you see India anywhere, everyone says it is among the top 5, a bright spot, growing at a steady pace. India has become the growth engine of the entire world," the minister said. Vaishnaw also displayed a video of Congress leader P Chidambaram in which he had questioned the government's digital payments plan. The minister said earlier regimes were riddled with scams but after 2014 things changed across all parameters -- GDP growth, forex reserve, foreign investment etc. "We have increased IITs 10 times, AIIMS have been doubled, and universities have increased three times. Imagine economic muscle power when we will be the third largest. Our own supercomputing chip, our own semiconductor fab, AI models," Vaishnaw said. He said the regime under Prime Minister <keyword id="19895781" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="narendra-modi" source="keywords">Narendra Modi</keyword> focussed on women-led growth and people on the last rung of the society that has brought 25 crore people out of poverty. "There is no state in India with extreme poverty," Vaishnaw said. The minister said that India's medal tally in international sports has also increased significantly because of transparency and facilitating world-class training for athletes with honesty.

Mobile exports to grow to $50-60 bn, electronics manufacturers to employ 25 lakh people: Vaishnaw

The government on Wednesday said there are no plans for security testing for smartphones or crackdown on pre-installed applications, as the sole emphasis is on ease of doing business and boost local electronics manufacturing. Responding to a media report, Union Minister of <keyword id="9950217" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="state-for-electronics" source="Orion">State for Electronics</keyword> and IT, <keyword id="205969" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="rajeev-chandrasekhar" source="Orion">Rajeev Chandrasekhar</keyword>, said that there is no "security testing" or "crackdown" plans for smartphone makers at the end of the government. "@GoI_MeitY is 100 per cent committed to 'Ease of Doing Business' and is totally focused on growing electronics manufacturing to touch $300 billion by 2026," the minister said in a tweet. Electronics manufacturing in the country is likely to cross Rs 1.28 lakh crore in the next financial year, according to Chandrasekhar. "The mobile phone production in India had increased from 5.8 crore units valued at about Rs 18,900 crore in 2014-15 to 31 crore units valued at over Rs 2,75,000 crore in the last financial year, as a result of various initiatives of the government, including the 'Phased Manufacturing programme'," Finance Minister <keyword id="129243" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="nirmala-sitharaman" source="Orion">Nirmala Sitharaman</keyword> had said during her Union Budget 2023-24 speech in Parliament. In the period from April-December 2022, mobile phone exports reached nearly $7-8 billion, and is expected to cross $9 billion for the fiscal year. The government has set a target to achieve $300 billion of electronics manufacturing by 2025-26, out of which $75-100 billion of electronics manufacturing is expected from Uttar Pradesh alone, according to the India Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA). As the world goes gaga over <keyword id="7795449" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="AI-chatbots" source="Orion">AI chatbots</keyword>, Union Minister of <keyword id="9950217" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="state-for-electronics" source="Orion">State for Electronics</keyword> and IT <keyword id="205969" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Rajeev-Chandrasekhar" source="Orion">Rajeev Chandrasekhar</keyword> has a clear vision: To make India a global powerhouse of AI which does not just stop on integrating foreign chatbots but building next-generation of AI-based innovations to <keyword id="13880162" type="DOMAIN" weightage="20" keywordseo="empower" botkeyword="" source="ET" sourcekeytype="COMPANY" meta.keywordsubtype="EQ" meta.aliasname="empower" meta.entityname="Empower India Ltd." meta.entityid="3850" meta.seoname="empower-india-ltd">empower</keyword> billions of citizens. <keyword id="79017" type="General" weightage="90" keywordseo="chandrasekhar" source="Orion">Chandrasekhar</keyword> told IANS that artificial intelligence (AI) is a "kinetic enabler" of the digital economy and the government will infuse more of this disruptive technology into its '<keyword id="3264646" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="india-stack" source="Orion">India Stack</keyword>'. "AI will certainly transform the digital economy and grow the business economy in the country. We are launching a very comprehensive programme called the INDIAai Programme and you will see more AI use cases via the India stack -- Aadhaar, Unified Payments Interface (<keyword id="6358921" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="upi" source="Orion">UPI</keyword>), DigiLocker, CoWIN and more," Chandrasekhar emphasised. "AI, as I have said, is a 'kinetic enabler' of the digital economy and we want to be the global leader in AI," the Minister told IANS. This week, Chandrasekhar met Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, and had a "good, interesting conversation about India Stack and Artificial Intelligence (AI)". The government, in the Union Budget for FY24, announced to open three centres of excellence for artificial intelligence (AI) at the top educational institutions, for realising the vision of "Make AI in India" and "Make AI Work for India". According to Chandrasekhar, the government is expanding the INDIAai initiative in partnership with homegrown tech companies, startups and academic institutions under a comprehensive AI programme. The Bhashini team at the IT Ministry aims to build a National Public Digital Platform for languages to develop services and products for citizens by leveraging the power of AI and other emerging technologies. It is creating a unifying architecture, underpinned by principles of open data and open source software, to enable contributions from the research initiatives and the ecosystem. Bhashini, the natural language AI platform, "will enable automated language translation", according to Chandrasekhar who had a three decades' long career in the technology domain before making his foray into politics. According to him, India Stack will become more nuanced, intelligent and sophisticated in its next avatar, as more and more enterprises and countries across the world innovate and integrate, execute, and implement digital transformation. "Our mission as a nation is to offer India Stack or the part of the stack to those enterprises and countries across the world who want to innovate and further integrate, execute, and implement digital transformation," said the Minister. India currently ranks first in terms of AI skill penetration and AI talent concentration and fifth in AI scientific publications, a Nasscom report said last month. India's 'AI Skills Penetration Factor' has been reported to be 3.09 -- the highest among all G20 and OECD countries. More than 1,900 AI-focused startups are providing innovative solutions in the country, primarily in the areas of conversational AI, NLP, video analytics, disease detection, fraud prevention and deep fakes detection.
