21 bodies found in investigation of cult whose followers starved themselves to death to 'meet Jesus'

Eventually, however, starvation kills.<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/fasting-mimicking-diet-cure-disease-aging-2016-9">Yet the limits on how long people can go without eating are complicated</a>; without water people are <a href="https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/how-long-can-the-average/">unlikely to last a week</a>, but the amount of time starvation takes can vary drastically.Take the story of Angus Barbieri. For 382 days, ending July 11, 1966, the then-27-year-old Scotsman ate nothing.There's limited documentation of Barbieri's fast: there are a few <a href="http://archives.chicagotribune.com/1966/07/12/page/5/article/scot-eats-his-1-st-solid-food-in-392-days">old newspaper stories</a> recounting his ordeal and more convincingly, there's a case report describing the experience that <a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2495396/pdf/postmedj00315-0056.pdf">his doctors published</a> in the Postgraduate Medical Journal in 1973.According to that report, Barbieri had walked into the University Department of Medicine at the Royal Infirmary of Dundee, Scotland, more than a year before, looking for help. He was "grossly obese" at the time, according to his doctors, weighing 456 pounds. The doctors put him on a short fast, thinking it would help him lose some weight, though they didn't expect him to keep it off. But as days without food turned into weeks, Barbieri felt eager to continue the program. Absurd and risky as his goal sounded - fasts over 40 days were <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/fasting-mimicking-diet-cure-disease-aging-2016-9">and still are</a> considered dangerous - he wanted to reach his "ideal weight," 180 pounds. So he kept going.In what was a surprise to his doctors, he lived his daily life mostly from home during the fast, coming into the hospital for frequent checkups and overnight stays. Regular blood-sugar tests - intended to demonstrate that he was somehow able to function while very hypoglycemic - assured doctors that he really wasn't eating. Weeks turned into months.Barbieri took vitamins on various occasions throughout the fast, including potassium and sodium supplements. He was allowed to drink coffee, tea, and sparkling water, all of which are naturally calorie-free. He said there was the occasional time that he'd have a touch of sugar or milk in tea, especially in his final few weeks of fasting.At the end of his ordeal, Barbieri tipped the scales at 180. Five years later, he'd still kept almost all the weight he'd lost off, weighing in at 196.<h2>The limits of the human body</h2>The Scotsman's fast is perhaps the most extreme example of a starvation diet ever recorded. (At least one person has reportedly even gone longer without food than Barbieri; a man named Dennis Galer Goodwin <a href="http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/3081604.stm">lasted 385 days on a hunger strike</a> to assert his innocence of a rape charge before he was force-fed through a tube.)But Barbieri's extreme regimen is not the only fast for health of eye-popping duration. In 1964, researchers published a study noting that "prolonged starvation" could be an effective treatment for severe obesity, <a href="http://jama.jamanetwork.com/article.aspx?articleid=1161598">with at least one patient fasting</a> for 117 days. For medical reasons, <a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2495396/pdf/postmedj00315-0056.pdf">several others have exceeded</a> the 200-day fasting mark, though there has been at least one death during the refeeding period for one of those patients.In a sense, these stories show the body's remarkable ability to (in a few rare cases) survive off of its own fat stores, provided those stores are excessive enough in the first place. Still, make no mistake, these types of extreme diets can be deadly. No one can survive without energy, which comes from food and can come from fat stores, though only for a period of time.While "starvation" as a treatment enjoyed some popularity in the 1960s and 70s, <a href="https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/how-long-can-a-person-sur/">doctors abandoned this strategy</a> because it was likely to kill patients. After a certain period of time the body burns through fat and muscle, eventually causing physical changes that drastically increase the chance of a fatal heart attack. Even low-calorie diets that provide insufficient nutrition have killed, with autopsy reports showing the characteristic signs of starvation.But as Barbieri shows, the question of how long people can live without food is a complicated one.Before his first meal after the fast, he claimed to have forgotten the taste of food. The true story of a man who survived without any food for 382 days

DAMASCUS (Reuters) - One <keyword id="6354913" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Syria">Syria</keyword>n security official called it the "Starvation Until Submission Campaign", blocking food and medicine from entering and people from leaving besieged areas of Syria.
Forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad have used partial sieges to root out rebel forces from residential areas during the civil war. But a recent tightening of blockades around areas near the capital is causing starvation and death, residents and medical staff say.
At an army checkpoint that separates government-held central Damascus from eastern suburban towns earlier this month, a thin, teenage boy on a bicycle circled a soldier and begged to be allowed to take a bag of pita bread, a staple food, into the eastern suburbs. The soldier refused but the boy kept begging for "just one loaf".
The soldier finally shouted: "I'm telling you, not a single morsel is allowed in there. I don't make the rules. There are those bigger than me and you who make the rules and they're watching us right now. So go back home." The soldier, visibly upset, exhaled quietly and deeply when the boy slipped out of sight.
The incident illustrates how blockades are being used as a weapon in a war that grew out of pro-democracy protests in the summer of 2011, increasing an already grave humanitarian crisis. Blockades are employed mostly by the government but also on a smaller scale by the armed opposition.
Food and medicine, which could be used by the warring parties, are rarely allowed to enter besieged areas and the movement of civilians in and out is restricted.
Over one million Syrians are trapped in areas where aid deliveries have stalled, the United Nations says.
The U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said in a report last month that half of those people are in rural Damascus and around 310,000 people more trapped in Homs province in central Syria.
<h3>EID BLOCKADE</h3>
At a checkpoint in central Damascus, a state security official, known as Abu Haidar, was heard to say "we like to call it our Starvation Until Submission Campaign". It's a phrase used increasingly by Assad's supporters in the capital.
The Syrian government has not commented on accusations it is using hunger as a weapon of war. It says that residents have been taken "hostage by terrorists". Aid workers say they are denied access. Both sides use checkpoints to mark territory and prevent the movement of enemy fighters and supporters.
Rebel-held towns to the east, south and west of Damascus are under partial or total siege and Abu Haidar said that the army had begun to block off the towns of Qudsayya and Hameh, a 15 minute drive north from central Damascus onto the Qasioun mountain range.
Residents of these two towns said that earlier this month, on the first day of the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha, many were forbidden from leaving to visit family elsewhere.
Chances of success in getting past the checkpoints depend on your identity card - public sector workers and school children are sometimes allowed through. Parents are told to stay behind.
Some people were allowed to leave on foot and residents reported a small exodus of civilians who feared that artillery bombardment would follow the siege, as it has in other areas where rebels have positioned themselves.
The main checkpoint forbids most cars from entering or leaving the two towns, forcing people to get out of their vehicles, walk down the highway for 20 minutes and use public transport on the other side.
Soldiers conduct vehicle and body searches to prevent "smuggling" of bread, baby milk and medicine into the besieged area - jailing offences. The checks create long queues of residents trying to return home, sometimes forcing them to wait for hours.
All traffic is prevented from entering Hameh, a mostly Sunni Muslim town where many residents support the rebellion. There is some movement into Qudsayya, a more religiously mixed area that is home to tens of thousands of displaced Syrians from other parts of the country.
<h3>NO BREAD</h3>
During a two-day visit by this journalist last month to the eastern towns, resourceful locals made do with what they had.
They gathered fruit and vegetables from the few orchards they could still access without risking government sniper fire and shelling. Those with cash paid smugglers to bring in bags of flour and other foodstuffs or medicine.
But nowhere in town was pita bread available. Local doctors said they regularly treat patients for water-borne diseases and that aerial bombardment has damaged the infrastructure, contaminating the water with sewage.
Doctors said that they were observing symptoms of malnutrition such as dehydration, severe weight loss, diarrhea and bloated stomachs.
International have little access to areas hit by violence. Groups like Save the Children are warning of a potential crisis. The agency released a report last month saying that parts of Homs, Aleppo, Idlib and Damascus have been encircled by violence or deliberately besieged.
In a separate development, the World Health Organisation confirmed an outbreak of polio among young children in northeast Syria on Tuesday - a consequence of falling vaccination rates in wartime.
The situation is acute for people living in Mouadamiya, on the southwestern outskirts of the capital Damascus, which has been under siege for a year and suffered from chemical weapons strikes and continuous bombardment.
Unlike East Ghouta, which also endured chemical attacks but is sometimes accessible, Mouadamiya is completely surrounded by the military.
The opposition says 12,000 people face starvation and death in Mouadamiya. About 90 percent of Mouadamiya has been destroyed and few doctors remain, it says.
This month, according to residents who live there reached by Skype, government aerial bombardment hit one of two remaining mains pipelines that deliver drinking water throughout Mouadamiya, further contaminating the local water supply.
Residents say that smugglers used to be able to throw bags packed with baby milk and medicine from moving cars into the town while driving along a nearby highway. But in July, the road became an active frontline between the army and rebels.
"No one can smuggle anything to us anymore," said resident and activist Qusai Zakarya. He said that many smugglers along the highway have been killed by government snipers. "Now, only shelling and bullets enter Mouadamiya, and only the souls of the departed can leave."
<h3>DYING OF HUNGER</h3>
For months, international pressure has been mounting on Syrian authorities to open humanitarian corridors to deliver aid to the besieged civilians.
Under international law, siege is not specifically prohibited. However deliberate starvation in a conflict is widely held to be a war crime and the law of armed conflict requires all sides to allow free access of humanitarian relief for civilians in need.
Although Syria is not party to the International Criminal Court - which can prosecute war crimes - the United Nations Security Council has the power to refer cases.
Three Security Council resolutions condemning Assad have been vetoed by permanent member Russia, one of his strongest allies, and China, making a referral unlikely.
Earlier this month, 3,000 women and children were evacuated from Mouadamiya, the United Nations said. But their suffering and starvation may continue as many have sought shelter in an abandoned school on the outskirts of Qudsayya, where the siege is starting.
On Tuesday, 1,800 residents were evacuated from the town, a source from the Ministry for Social Affairs said. State media said they were fired on by "terrorists."
Hunger has become so endemic that locals say they eat leaves and grass.
Fatima, who fled Mouadamiya just before the siege last year along with her husband and their five children to central Damascus, said one of her relatives died in Mouadamiya in August from starvation. He was three years old.
Local doctors sent Reuters videos showing six cases of death from malnutrition. Most of the victims were children.
Activist Zakarya said that this month alone, he knows of 11 women and children who died of starvation, including 7-year-old Dua al Sheikh, who was her parents' only daughter.
He said that after months of eating the rice, barley and bulgur wheat in stock, families are now down to little more than olives and olive oil for three meals a day.
"We sometimes roll a bunch of grape leaves together and sprinkle it with salt and pepper and eat it pretending it's yabraa," said Zakarya, referring to a popular Syrian dish of grape leaves stuffed with rice and ground lamb or beef.
Civilians in besieged areas say farmers are targeted as they try to harvest their crop in an open field. They tell also of government shelling that purposely sets entire crop fields ablaze, around Damascus and in Homs province.
In Mouadamiya, people have been planting rocket plants in small patches of earth between buildings so as to avoid any open fields.
And Zakarya says "we use grass sometimes as a salad, with olives and olive oil."

New year begins with a ceasefire violation on the India-Pakistan border

<ul><li>A new study highlights that a nuclear war between India and Pakistan would result in the deaths of 125 million people. </li><li>The resulting pollution from the nuclear attacks would get trapped in the Earth’s atmosphere resulting in <keyword id="1711044" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="global-cooling">global cooling</keyword>. </li><li>The drop in temperatures could trigger mass starvation following a reduction in the ocean’s productivity and vegetation growth. </li></ul>The brewing tensions between India and Pakistan have to simmer down. Otherwise, the possible consequences could be disastrous. If a nuclear war were to break out between the countries, not only would it result in mass casualties but worldwide collateral damage, according to a new study published in <a href="https://advances.sciencemag.org/content/5/10/eaay5478">Science Advances</a>. "India and Pakistan are of special concern because of a long history of military clashes including serious recent ones, lack of progress in resolving territorial issues, densely populated urban areas, and ongoing rapid expansion of their respective nuclear arsenals," the environmental study stated. Scientists predict that India and Pakistan may have 400 to 500 nuclear weapons between themselves, by 2025. They would only have to use a fraction of those weapons to unleash destruction. Blocking out sunlight According to the study, if India uses 100 of its nuclear weapons to target urban centers in Pakistan. And, if Pakistan reciprocates by launching 150 of its own nuclear missiles, the death toll could reach 125 million. The resulting smoke from on-ground nuclear fires would get trapped in the lowest level of the atmosphere — the troposphere, which is 10 to 15 kilometers above the Earth’s surface — and spread around the globe in a matter of weeks. The density of the smoke would block out 20-35% of the incoming sunlight followed by global cooling of 2 degrees Celsius to 5 degrees Celsius. And, it could take the Earth more than 10 years to recover from the catastrophe. "Such a war would threaten not only the locations where bombs might be targeted but the entire world," said <a href="https://news.rutgers.edu/nuclear-war-between-india-and-pakistan-could-kill-millions-worldwide/20190924">Alan Robock</a>, the lead author of the study. The domino effect Global cooling is only one immediate after-effect of the nuclear war between India and Pakistan. It would also mean that precipitation would fall by an average of 15-30% worldwide with the regional impact being much greater. Because there will be less rain, vegetation growth will also decline by 15-30% and the ocean’s productivity would be affected by 5-15%, triggering mass starvation across the world. The researchers clarify that it’s unlikely that either country will actually unleash nuclear weapons but they could be used by accident — for instance, if either of their defence systems were hacked. "The only way to prevent this is to eliminate them (nuclear weapons)," stated Robock.

Several months earlier, McCandless had walked into the wilderness in the final great adventure of a year of wandering the United States after having given away all of his possessions.
That summer, in Alaska, McCandless camped in the shell of an old bus and subsisted on animals he hunted and plants he foraged. For several months, he thrived. But then something went wrong. In mid-September, McCandless's body and diaries were found in the bus by hunters. The assumption was that he had starved to death.
Jon Krakauer wrote a story about McCandless for Outside Magazine, and then a famous book called "<a href="http://www.amazon.com/Into-Wild-Jon-Krakauer/dp/0385486804">Into The Wild</a>," which was later made into a movie. 
Krakauer had a lot of sympathy for McCandless. In "<keyword id="358926" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="Into-the-Wild">Into The Wild</keyword>," he portrayed him as a smart, adventurous, and capable young man.
Many of Krakauer's readers, meanwhile, thought McCandless was a fool--a dreamy kid woefully unprepared for life in the wilderness who, in a sense, had gotten what was coming to him.
But how had McCandless died?
Had he really starved to death, despite being able to hunt and gather food?
In "Into the Wild," Krakauer speculated that what had killed McCandless was not actually starvation but wild potato seeds. McCandless had eaten lots of these seeds, and Krakauer speculated that a toxic alkaloid in the seeds had so weakened him that he had been unable to gather enough food.
But wild potatoes are described in most guidebooks (including McCandless's) as a non-toxic plant. So Krakauer's "toxic alkaloid" theory was ridiculed. Krakauer sent some seeds to a professor, but the professor couldn't find any toxic alkaloids.
Krakauer was confused. But he didn't give up.
And, now, 21 years after McCandless's death, Krakauer thinks he has finally found the answer.
A researcher named Ronald Hamilton had written a paper arguing that McCandless had, in fact, been killed by the wild potato seeds, but not because of any "toxic alkaloids." Rather, Hamilton argued, McCandless's meager diet and malnutrition in the wilderness had made him susceptible to a rare but brutal affliction called "lathyrism" that gradually paralyzes its victims. Lathryrism occurs primarily in malnourished young men, and it is caused by the ingestion of an amino acid that was first discovered in the seeds of wild grass peas.
After reading Hamilton's paper, Krakauer sent a bunch of wild potato seeds to a chemist. The chemist found that, indeed, the wild potato seeds contained the amino acid that causes lathyrism.
So Chris McCandless may indeed have died of starvation, Krakauer concludes, <a href="http://www.newyorker.com/online/blogs/books/2013/09/how-chris-mccandless-died.html">in a long article in this week's New Yorker</a>. But he starved not because he was alone in the wilderness, but because an amino acid in a plant that his guidebook had told him was safe had gradually paralyzed him. Once McCandless could no longer move, he could no longer gather more food. And, shortly thereafter, he died.
As Jon Krakauer notes <a href="http://www.newyorker.com/online/blogs/books/2013/09/how-chris-mccandless-died.html">at the end of his article,</a> Chris McCandless would now be 45.
