<keyword id="6355629" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="google">Google</keyword> on Wednesday expanded its programme for startups to support startups working on the solutions to solve real-life challenges towards the new normal post COVID-19 landscape in India. <keyword id="9416148" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="google-for-startups">Google for Startups</keyword> has opened applications for the new batch of <keyword id="9416150" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="google-for-startups-accelerator">Google for Startups Accelerator</keyword>, with a special focus on health-tech, fin-tech, edu-tech, agri-tech, retail and SaaS startups, the company said in a statement. The next batch will commence in August 2020 and the last date of applications is June 30. This will be the fourth class of startups mentored by Google, which has so far closely mentored over 60 startups in India to date. "We have been working very closely with over 250 Startups founders over the last two months, holding consults with our network of experts, mentors and VCs to help solve for the immediate challenges faced by the founder community," informed Paul Ravindranath G, Programme Manager, Google for <keyword id="9416146" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="startups-accelerator-india">Startups Accelerator India</keyword>. In addition to the fresh call for applications, Google for Startups also announced the launch of 'Emerging stronger: Playbook' for startups to face the Covid-19 Challenge. "We have captured the work of these last two months into a handy playbook which we hope will benefit the larger ecosystem," Ravindranath added. Beyond the Accelerator, Google for Startups will continue to offer support to startups via its partner programme and mentor network.

Google launches program to support Indian startups creating solutions for post COVID-19 world

Yes, you read it right. A desi version of <keyword id="1417364" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Shark-Tank">Shark Tank</keyword> is on the cards as the Indian government plans to give a push to entrepreneurs and startups. 
 
The Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP) is planning the programme and wants to air it on India's national broadcast channel, Doordarshan. 
 
"We will hire an agency to scout for startups and investors to feature on the show. Actual funding will be provided to the winners," a senior DIPP official told ET. 
 
Shark Tank, modelled on a Japanese show, has been running successfully in the US since 2009. 
 
To take things to another level, the department wants to have a dedicated channel for startups and has written to the Information and Broadcasting Ministry for the same. 
 
“Just like there is a channel for kisan (farmers) there can be one for startups," the official told ET. 
 
In the Indian version of Shark Tank, budding entrepreneurs will pitch ideas to judges who will grill them before making any investment. 
 
As the government has always maintained, the startups will have to find innovative solutions to problems faced by industry and ministries as the government tries to encourage entrepreneurs to look beyond technology. 
 The government already has a ‘<keyword id="3003094" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Startup-India">Startup India</keyword>, Stand Up’ action plan in place.

The Indian government wants to fulfil its promise to provide employment to one crore people before its term ends and in a bid to achieve its target, it is going after startups. Now, companies that want to avail benefits from the <keyword id="3003094" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Startup-India">Startup India</keyword>, Standup India programme will have to declare how many jobs they would create. "We will soon notify the new definition for startups, which goes beyond innovation," a senior government official told ET. Apart from innovation, which is the main criteria for startups to qualify, <keyword id="81847" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Job-creation">job creation</keyword> is also on agenda. To qualify as a startup under the new definition, an entity would have to declare its job creation target and meet certain financial standards besides having a certain level of innovation in its product or service. "We will do our own scrutiny at the time of examination of applications for giving the tax benefits," the official told ET. It is noteworthy, at the time of Startup India initiative’s launch, job creation was not a mandatory requirement. So far, DIPP has recognised 798 applications as startups but not given them the tax benefit. Companies incorporated after March 31, 2016, could avail of a three-year tax holiday in the first seven years of their existence under the Startup India initiative. Startups are expected to create 250,000 jobs in India by 2020, up from 80,000 now, according to a <keyword id="6372077" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nasscom">Nasscom</keyword> report.

Govt sets new rule for startups to quality for Startup India programme. Here it is

One of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s flagship initiatives, Startup Standup India has got a lot of press over the last 12 months. The programme is looking to build a strong technological eco-system for nurturing innovation and startups in the country. 
 
Officially launched on January 16, 2016, the action plan charts a way to generate new employment opportunities and a more fertile ground for entrepreneurs across the length and breadth of the nation. 
 
So what’s in it for startups/entrepreneurs? 
· It’ll bring more Women and SC/ST entrepreneurs onboard. Over 2.5 lakh people would be helped with Bank loans. 
· PM Modi even said there will be no income tax on startups’ profits for three years 
· One can register a start up in a day using the <a href="https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.narendramodiapp&amp;hl=en">Narendra Modi app</a>. Just fill a small application, and voila! 
· Filing startup patents would be a lot easier 
· More freedom to entrepreneurs 
· No tax from any startup for three years 
· Startup India Fund for Startups 
 
The promises seemed really good on paper. So much so, that the current generation of startup entrepreneurs went gung ho over the proposed regulations. 
 
Now let’s have a look at the current status of some of the above. You’re in for a ride! 
 
Status: 
· While a total of 728 applications were received, the government has recommended only one for tax benefits 
· A total of Rs 1360.11 Crores were disbursed in loans till July 15. Out of this, Rs 179.15 Crores, or 13% was to Scheduled Castes, and the rest went to women and Scheduled Tribes. 
· Only 180 applicants have been ear-marked as startups, and a mere 16 applicants had been incorporated after April 1, 2016. 
· Till now, only three start-ups have received equity-free seed funding from the Department of Science and Technology. EmpoWer, a Zone Startups India accelerator for women entrepreneurs is in the list. 
· While the government says they are currently working on minimizing the time spent in licensing process, nothing has been announced. 
· The Startup helpline has received over 200 calls a day.

Startup Standup India – a LOT of promise, but…

Last month, we told you about the government’s decision to lay out a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Not-every-new-venture-can-be-called-a-start-up-says-the-Indian-government/articleshow/50495558.cms">concrete definition</a> of the word <keyword id="6404679" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="start-up">start-up</keyword>, so that only innovative companies could benefit from the “Start Up India, Stand Up India” initiative. 
 
Now, the government has set out the definition of a 'start-up' so that only deserving companies can be able to gain from the 'Startup India Action Plan' and to "create a conducive environment for startups in India". 
 
A government notification says that to be able to benefit from the plan, a 'start-up' should have at least 20% equity funding by any incubation, angel or private equity fund, and an accelerator or angel network duly registered with SEBI should be endorsing the innovative nature of the business. 
 
Only the companies that fulfil these conditions would be considered as start-ups up to five years from the date of incorporation till the time that their turnover exceeds Rs 25 crore. 
 
The government also wants a boost in innovation, therefore start-ups should be engaged in development, deployment or commercialisation of new products, processes or services driven by technology or intellectual property. 
 
In order to recognising a company as a start-up, the government will use a mobile application/portal until the launch of which, the Department of industrial policy and promotion (DIPP) will be planning an alternative. 
 
Benefits under the plan include a tax holiday and Inspector Raj-free regime for three years, capital gains tax exemption and Rs 10,000 crore corpus for funding.

‘Start-up’ gets a proper definition; is your company covered under the 'Startup India Action Plan'?

Amid <keyword id="6357722" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="silicon-valley">Silicon Valley</keyword> bigwigs and a packed audience, India’s trade minister <keyword id="129243" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nirmala-Sitharaman">Nirmala Sitharaman</keyword> said the government will set up a conducive ecosystem for startups. 
 Addressing the gathering at the <keyword id="3003094" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Startup-India">Startup India</keyword> event, Sitharaman said it will be easy for startups to launch or exit a business. 
 
"I understand that starting a startup is as much important as somebody wants to exit from it. The government is working to make the exit also (easy)," said Sitharaman. 
 
The minister also spoke about the Bankruptcy Code, which seeks to provide an easy exit option for insolvent and sick companies. 
 
"I am sure with these (measures), we will be doing the right thing for the startups" so that they stay here in India "and not look at having a domicile somewhere else," said Sitharaman. 
 
"We...have to see how best we can remove the clutter in such a way that your (startups) core business interest are the ones in which you are going to focus rather than think about what compliance have to be attended to," she added. 
 
The Startup India initiative also looks to create employment in the country. 
 
Speaking at the event, Secretary in the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP) Amitabh Kant said that 'Startup India' initiative will help in turning youth from "job seekers to job creators".

It was a great moment for the Indian startup sector when <keyword id="6354814" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="prime-minister-Narendra-Modi">Prime Minister Narendra Modi</keyword> launched the action plan of <keyword id="3003094" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Startup-India">Startup India</keyword>, Standup India at a packed room in Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi. 
 
Addressing entrepreneurs and bigwigs from the Silicon Valley, Modi said success of entrepreneurs depends on the ability to take risks. The prime miinster said entrepreneurs have risk taking capacity, they are adventurous and they have compassion. 
 
“Sometimes, I wish god had given me capabilities like you people have. While listening to Ritesh (OYO Rooms founder), I wondered why a tea seller could not think of starting a hotel chain,” Modi told the gathering at Startup India event. 
 
Modi also said people launching their startups have a motive beyond money and fame, and they want to leave a legacy behind and do something for the country. 
“You should initiate with a thinking of doing something and not focussing only on money. Money will follow,” said Modi. 
 
He also said that majority of the startups are focussed on IT. Modi said entrepreneurs should think beyond IT and provide to every sector in the country, be it handicrafts or anything. 
 
“I get to hear so many ideas from the youth. I will share your success stories, it will go viral. The environment of negativity has gone, it is passé now,” said Modi. Speaking about <keyword id="94495" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="20" keywordseo="Innovation">innovation</keyword> in India, Modi said India has no dearth of ‘jugaad’ but that is for the person itself. 
 
“The kind of innovation we are experiencing today is one of a kind. When we speak about Make in India, it also stands for Make for India. We want people to become foolproof and we want to provide people with systems to enable to the entire country. We have to change the ideology of the youth from job seeker to job creator,” said Modi. 
 
The prime minister also said that quality education and infrastructure was the need of the hour so that even the last man staying in India benefits from it. 
Modi spoke about affordability and challenges. 
 
“Health sector is dependent on technology than the doctors. In a country like India, this should be affordable too, which is a challenge among us,” said Modi. 
The prime minister also said he is confident about the youth of the country that they would bring a change in India and lead from the front. 
 
“India has millions of millions of problems but at the same time I know we have billions of billions of minds in the country. Every startup should have a problem solving ideology, which will also bring satisfaction among the youth. “Entrepreneurs should think about changing lives of people and taking India forward,” said Modi.

<ul><li>Google just announced the 10 startups that have been shortlisted for the second calls of its Launchpad Accelerator program in India.</li><li>All of the startups on the list have used artificial intelligence and machine learning to formulate their products.</li></ul> Google just announced the second wave of startups selected for their Launch Accelerator program in India. And, all the startups on the list feature use artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) in one or the other component of their businesses. The program kicks off today with a one week mentorship programme boot camp organised by Google in Bengaluru which will be followed by more classes in April and May to address more specific issues — lasting a total of three months. Aside from guidance, Google will also provide support for AI and ML, cloud computing, developing user interfaces, using the Android platform, online presence, product strategy and marketing. And depending on the startup, they will be receiving Google Cloud Credits between $20,000 (₹1.3 million) to $100,000 (₹6.9 million). Meet the 10 startups that were shortlisted for Google’s second class of the Launchpad Accelerator program in India: 1. Opentalk Opentalk is an app that allows users to reach out to other users all over the world to hone their language skills. So users can meet new people that speak the language that they’re looking to learn. They also have the options for users to follow trending topics in case their looking to engage on a particular issue. OpenTalk already has a 100 languages, 150 countries and 1500 colleges using their app. 2. THB THB stands for Technology, Healthcare and Big Data Analytics and a pretty accurate description of the what the company does. Using technology they standardise data on healthcare to help healthcare providers and medical practitioners with different use cases like PEP (Personalised Patient Care), medical sales force productivity booster and clinical decision support. Based out of Gurgaon, the clinical intelligence company is currently present in 50 cities across 12 states in India. 3. Perceptiviti Data Solutions Having started out in 2017, Perceptiviti Data Solutions focused on finding solutions for fraud and risk management in insurance, financial services and digital payment services. Their flagship product called ‘Sherlock’ is a fraud detection platform that claims 90% accuracy after having assessed over one million insurance claims using AI. 4. DheeYantra DheeYatra is already in use by the Syndicate Bank and Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad. It’s an AI platform that currently helps businesses operate across 8 different Indian languages. With the help of AI, the company has developed chatbots and solutions in natural language processing (NLP), optical character recognition (OCR), and Indic transliteration. Brand names, scanned images and even a whole website can be translated into various Indian vernacular languages using their application programming interfaces (APIs). 5. FinancePeer Just like there are peer-to-peer (P2P) online marketplaces for cars and used goods, FinancePeer is a P2P lending company that connects lenders with borrowers online. Users can sign up as borrowers or lenders after the platform analyses their borrower credit score using AI that taps into multiple parameters including social profiles. The company claims that it only takes 10 minutes to set up a profile online and since it’s an open marketplace, borrowers will only face competitive and low interest rates. Lenders, on the other hand, can allegedly get returns upto 37% per annum. 6. SmartCoin Gunning for financial inclusion in India, SmartCoin is another lending app that uses AI and machine learning to assess the risk profile of a borrower. The app main goal is to provide short-term credit to the underserved and low-income households in India. So far, SmartCoin has a 100,000 users and has shelled out over 300,000 loans. 7. HRBOT Finding new candidates for a job can be excruciating process without a filtering mechanism in place. HRBOT, using AI and machine learning to scan the 120,000 job seekers on its platform to find applicants that would be best suited for a particular post according to the requirements that recruiters share. It company’s main selling point is that it has access to candidates in tier-2 and tier-3 cities in India. 8. Savera.ai The use of solar panels to reduce the burden of electricity requirements and its positive environment impact are no secret. But since the technology is still relatively new in India, Savera.ai helps users decide whether or not their roof is ready for a solar panel by issuing a ‘Sun Score’. The ‘Sun Score’ is the final ranking of how ready an individual’s house is for a solar panel after analysing the location of a users’ house, identifying the rooftop, running a weather analysis and taking individual state’s solar policy into account. And, should a user choose to set up a solar panel, savera.ai has chatbot support to get them setup with local service providers. 9. Kaleidofin This is essentially a financial management tool. Users can set their financial goals and Kaleidofin will suggest how much user should saved each month while taking financial volatilities into account. Since the profile is tailored for each user, how a user’s savings should be used is also diversified over different financial products including ways to invest using a data driven model to estimate the income level, saving capacity and financial health of customers. It’s already being used by many mutual funds in India like Aditya Birla Capital, Franklin Templeton Investments, HDFC Mutual Fund, ICICI Prudential Life Insurance, and SBI Mutual Fund. 10. Adiuvo Diagnostics The company isn’t just an app or a platform — but has an actual physical device which can detect and classify skin infections in under 2 minutes. It’s easy for doctors because the ‘Skin-Scope’ is a handheld medical device and the pro for patients is that the whole diagnostic process is non-invasive. Kaleidofin and Adiuvo Diagnostics are the only two startups selected that have women entrepreneurs at the helm. Google initially started the Launchpad Accelerator Program globally back in 2016. The very first batch of the Launchpad Accelerator that was originally a 6-month mentorship at the Google headquarters in California included Nestaway, a Ratan Tata investment that helps users find homes without a broker. Another well known startup, ShareChat — a social networking chat platform that uses local Indian languages — was also a part of the Launchpad Accelerator in the second batch. The Launchpad Accelerator India was only introduced by Google in July 2018 that saw startups like Multibhashi, OliveWear and Genrobotics. Aside from India, the program also operates in Sao Paulo, Tel Aviv, Nigeria, Tokyo and Singapore. So far, it has mentored 30 startups in India through its global accelerator programme.
