	A study by Aspiring Minds revealed that as much as 47% entry level hiring in startups today is comprised of non - technical roles. The study also highlighted that unlike popular notion of startups hiring only for technical roles like that of a programmer or developer, there is growing demand for roles in marketing, digital media and content writing.
 

	“Start-ups will be the mainstay for job growth for the next few years. We expect start-ups to create a north of 1, 00, 000 jobs this year with 80% of them in non - technical roles benefiting large masses of youth in the country,” said Himanshu Aggarwal, CEO, Aspiring Minds.

Follow startup news portals for funding news. Go to events conducted by your local accelerators. Judge the founders, ask your mentors in College and write directly to one of the co-founders. LinkedIn or Facebook will do just fine. If you their numbers from a Journalist friend, even better! *wink* Call them directly, and make a case. No use going via the HR road. It’s typically slack, inefficient and not promising. 
 
Register on job and internship sites. Create feeds for you that involve only <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=startup+jobs&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">startup jobs</a>. Once you’re done applying online, mail the co-founders. Can’t stress this enough. 
 
Now you have to get yourself selected. This is a tricky part. Understand what the company’s business model and market potential is. You might not have the required skills, but if you feel you can still get by and learn fast, that’s enough. In the mail mention that you’re an energetic young man/woman who’s hungry for growth who can own up when the situation demands it.

Judge the co-founders. A Quora post put it best, “Are they typical geeks who talk about 'cool' technologies but won't be able to make something commercial, are they proper 'B-Plan' kind of guys who talk big numbers but don't have the expertise or knowledge to build a good product and are basically looking for a 'CTO', are they socialists who want to do 'good for the society' and won't be able to make a sustainable business post the B-Plan competition, are they rich kids with awesome academic credentials and multiple pages of resume who are just looking for a way to crack Stanford or Harvard?”

	Be very clear with the role that you will offer the candidate. Its recruitment platform supports something called a "try out" period that lets employers and employees work together for a few days, or maybe a couple of weeks, on a freelance basis for an ample weekly salary. $1,000 - $3,000 a week is typical, though GroupTalent says some folks can make as much as $7,000 a week.
The programmer is hired by a company to jump in and build something useful. If it's a fit, the two can then get permanently hitched. This is a little different than a typical freelance gig, because these companies are looking for a long-term relationship, not just a series of short-term gigs.
And here's the best part: GroupTalent will hide your Try It from your current employer. If it's not a fit, there's no harm done. "By telling us who your current employer is, we can make sure they don’t see your profile," t<a href="https://grouptalent.com/main/talent/">he company promises.</a>
The company operates in New York and San Francisco so far, and currently hosts almost 600 jobs. It has plans to add jobs in Seattle, Boston, Austin, San Diego and Los Angeles, it says.
Today the GroupTalent website added some new improved search features, too, so it's easier to browse the freelance jobs to see if something sparks your interest.
GroupTalent is a TechStars startup that's raised about $1 million so far. Its cofounder and CEO, Manuel Medina, cut his teeth at Microsoft wooing <keyword id="142327" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="developer">developer</keyword>s into writing apps for Microsoft Game Studios. He also helped convince developers to write apps for Windows Phone. Cofounder Gordon Hempton is also an ex-Microsoft developer. He worked on Microsoft's SQL Server.

Even as there’s lot of excitement around <keyword id="6362513" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Startups">startups</keyword>, a lot of people who join the new kids on the block drop out of this career too soon. Experts have identified several reasons that are making people opt out and they say the reasons attributed are no less than bizarre. 
 
“There is hardly any clarity” <keyword id="208380" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Rishi-Das">Rishi Das</keyword>, whose company <keyword id="2817401" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="HiRePro">HirePro</keyword> hires talent for various other companies, says startup is all about lack of clarity. When a person decides to pursue a role in a startup, they ought to know what’s coming their way. However, it’s surprising, he says, to see that the uncertainty, lack of predictability, which is very inherent in startups, is often confused with the organization’s incompetence or immaturity. 
Why this happens – “When you work in structured IT companies or come from an FMCG company into a startup, you are used to working in a structured way, something the startup won’t offer. So, at one time you want the excitement of working in a startup, but when you see unflexible timings or having to work outside of your roles, people choose to opt out of it,” says Rishi. 
 
“No Work-life balance” 
In structured companies, they have predictable work life schedule. By the time, employees are in their mid-30s, they have friend circles and families and are used to a certain lifestyle. Howeverm when these people end in startups, they have to sleep in office just to make things happen. 
 
“Not everyone can adapt to meetings happening 11 at night. I have seen people living in the office for a whole week, because let’s face it, it’s a crazy job with crazy goals and if you want to achieve them, it has to come with some sacrifice,” says Rishi. 
 
“Promoters are interfering” 
Like it or not, every promoter is a beast even as they form both the strength as well as weakness of a company. 
 
“Most people who have worked in structured environments are not ready to take the whims and fancies of the promoter. Usually, the senior management faces this challenge. Promoters have different styles of working, they may be micro-managing, they may have their own biases and it can be seen as extremely interfering. When they experience such problems, people get disenchanted and decide to make their way out,” says Rishi.

Bizarre reasons why most employees decide to opt out of their startup jobs

A survey from JobBuzz, conducted on professionals working in new ventures, has shown that 88% of these professionals are ready to leave their current jobs in startups if they are offered jobs in more established companies. This means that only 12% respondents felt content with their work profiles in current startups. 
 
The survey findings point at an impending attrition problem that startups could face in the near future as they seek to scale. 
 
“Today’s talent is no longer lured by just fat paychecks. They are looking at long-term career growth and are careful when choosing their employers. The recent spate of retrenchments have deeply affected the very important and high-engagement sense of ownership and belonging that young professionals felt when they joined these start-ups," says Vivek Madhukar, COO, TimesJobs.com. 
 
“Those joining startups must have that sense of passion and ownership to make the company grow. If they want to switch, as the survey shows, startups need to have a relook at their hiring strategy so they pick people who share the vision of the founders and feel themselves part of the company’s growth story,” adds Madhukar. 
 
Over 750 professionals working in different new ventures across the startup hotbeds of Delhi, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Pune, Gurgaon, Delhi and Noida took part in the survey. 
 
When asked why they were thinking of quitting their startup jobs, 43% felt they would be able to draw higher salaries in established companies. But a significant 30% said it was due to the nature of their jobs in startups as they were unable to maintain work-life balance. 
Interestingly, the fear of the startup not taking off properly and employees losing their jobs was not reported to be a major concern. Only 15% survey respondents admitted that they wanted to switch to an established company to seek better job security. 
 
But ennui appears to have set in among employees who have been in these startups for at least one year and more. Nearly 65% of them said they would readily switch to an established player if they got the opportunity. 
 
Nearly 58% employees in IT, internet, dotcom, consulting and retail startups, who answered the JobBuzz.in survey, said they wanted to move to bigger companies. The discontent appears widespread among both junior and senior-level professionals, 75% of whom wanted to move to bigger companies. 
 
However, respondents felt that their startup stints had started off with a lot of passion. 
 
When asked why they took up a startup job in the first place, 54% said it was because of the thrill of working in a new venture. Only 23% had taken up the jobs for higher salary while 20% were looking for a flexible work culture – a major pull for Gen Y and Z today. 
On the concerns they had before they joined startups, most survey respondents said it was the risk of the venture failing (63%) and the pressure of taking up multiple roles (29%). 
 
HR leaders from large companies, speaking at various TimesJobs.com boardroom discussions, have said that startups pulling in talent has become a hiring challenge for them. But some also pointed towards increasing cases of burnout among employees as the new ventures scaled and thus the increasing urge to leave for established companies.

Engineers, especially IITians, are a happy lot as startups and emerging e-commerce firms are hiring them for every role in the company, including corporate functions. 
 
Yes, startups like Ola, Oyo Rooms, CarDekho.com, Jabong, etc are hiring more engineers for roles and responsibilities like operations, marketing, business finance, procurement, etc. 
 
This will spell bad news for MBAs as they have always been the first choice for such roles. 
 
Reportedly, Ola is planning to hire 125 IITians for non-tech roles and the taxi hailing service hired 20 such engineers last year. 
 
"IIT graduates are strong analytically and good with numbers. Hence, we approach them for non-tech roles, too," Amit Mathur, director and head of talent acquisition at leading taxi aggregator Ola Cabs, told ET. 
 
Likewise, CarDekho.com will hire more analysts from IITs. 
 
Experts say that engineers are quite adjusting than MBAs and are willing to take more risks and do not expect a comfortable job. 
Many startup owners say they prefer fresh graduates from IITs. 
 
"Start-ups have been telling us this year that they want to increase the number of hires in non-tech/managerial roles. We also expect an upward revision in the compensation being offered for these roles," Babu Vishwanath, advisor - placements at IIT Madras, told ET.
